the most fascinating book i've ever read
By evelynk210@aol.com
I never expected Princess Daisy to be as good of a read as it was. They story is captivating and the herione, Daisy makes you want to be her. Krantz's descriptions of the places in the novel are so wonderful that you feel as though you were right there. All the different characters in this book seem to all have a little secret and it just makes you want to read more and more to uncover it. If you have never read a romance novel before, I would recommend that you read this novel. This is probably my favorite book because of the unique way Krantz presents the story along with her detailed descriptions of everyone and everything in the book. I enjoyed this book so much that i went and bought the miniseries.

Excellent author, excellent story, excellent read!
By A Customer
I admit it, i 'judge a book by it's cover'. That is the reason i first picked up "Princess Daisy", the cover was beautiful. The story turned out to be equally compelling. The key to a good book is making you feel like you are in the story, and making the characters and their situations seem real. Krantz does this wonderfully. I was captured by the story of Daisy, her life, her struggles, and her triumphs. When i reached the last chapter, i was extremely disappointed. I didn't want the story to end! I read this last chapter over and over, and i hoped for a sequel. I highly recommend reading this novel to anyone who enjoys reading about romance, adventure, and mystery; this book has it all, and pulls it off well.

Would have been twice as good were it half as long.
By kaduzy
This book was a diverting "guilty" pleasure to read. (I never liked that expression because I never feel guilty about reading trashy novels.) However, it really didn't need to be as long as it was. The thing that added all the unnecessary length was Krantz's insistence on giving us pages of background information on characters who are completely tangential to the plot. We get all kinds of introductions to and sex scenes between characters who simply do not matter. The book is supposed to be about Princess Daisy, based on the title, but her story only takes up 2/3 of it.

I like Krantz's writing style, because it's wildly over the top and often makes me laugh. However, she does have a tendency to just run on and on about things once she's already made her point. In the interest of NOT following in her footsteps, I will end this review.

Yoga from a Western Pioneer
By ubalu
Lilias Folan is probably the Western pioneer teacher of Yoga. This short book is based on her Television Yoga program in the 1960s. It is evident that she learned Yoga from authentic Indian Masters. Her guru is Swami Chidananda. The book gives more than Yoga postures. Breathing and principles of Yoga including vegetarianism are addressed. There is even a vegetarian recipe. Sections for men only, breathing, a note to teachers, and comments and questions are all short and to the point.

Many Yoga postures from different groups of asanas are taught. The how to, pointers, and benefits of each posture are given special attention. A black and white photo of Lilias doing each pose is included with the description.

The book was written way before Yoga became popular in the West.

Lilias dedicates the book to her husband and her Gurus, as customary in the Indian tradition. This is a wonderful book for a beginner.

I love this book
By Kat
I love this book. I had it back in the 70's and bought it after watching the Lilias Yoga show on public tv.
It was really easy to learn from. The only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it surprised me and came as a small paperback and the one i had before was really large. It's the exact same book so i'm keeping it - just be aware there are 2 sizes of this book. Its a great reference for a beginner.

It was easy to follow
By Diana Frisina
I used this same book to learn and practice yoga in the 1970's. It was easy to follow, clear and concise then and now. Lilias' instruction and additional comments are especially helpful for review of postures I have continued to practice over the years and for those I had to relearn.

The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Writings (Bantam Classics), by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Lynne Sharon Schwartz

Known primarily for her classic and haunting story "The Yellow Wallpaper," Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an enormously influential American feminist and sociologist. Her early-twentieth-century writings continue to inspire writers and activists today. This collection includes selections from both her fiction and nonfiction work.

In addition to the title story, there are seven short stories collected here that combine humor, anger, and startling vision to suggest how women's "place" in society should be changed to benefit all. The nonfiction selections are from Gilman's The Man-Made World: Our Androcentric Culture and her masterpiece, Women And Economics, which was translated into seven languages and established her international reputation as a theorist.

Also included in a delightful excerpt from Gilman's utopian novel, Herland, an acidly funny tale about three American male explorers who stumble into an all-female society and begin their odyssey by insisting, "This is a civilized country . . . there must be men." Gilman's analyses of economic and women's issues are as incisive and relevant today as they were upon their original publication. This volume is an unprecedented opportunity to rediscover a powerful American writer.

Glaring mistake at story's conclusion
By K. Mcgarry
I'm sure this collection of Gilman's work is adequate enough, however, at the end of the story, "The Yellow Wall-paper," there is a mistake in the printing of a name of one of the characters. The text states "Jennie" when it should state "Jane," and this completely changes the way a reader would interpret and understand the entire story. Jennie is the sister to John, the protagonists husband. Having her name inserted in this passage wrongly implicates her with the action. Jane is the name the writer and character mean to implicate. Read it again and insert Jane for Jennie and see how the story shifts in importance. Poor Charlotte must be creeping about in her grave at this error.

Post Partum Madness?
By dandeliondreamer
Gilman was a feminist, a radical suffragist and a woman who was told that all of her thoughts and energies ought to be solely focused on something that she wasn't really interested in being: a mother. She suffered from post-partum depression and severe anxiety later in life. The title story, "the Yellow Wallpaper" is a semi-autobiographical account of what happened when she had to go through a "rest cure" for her "hysteria." The title story is her most well-known, but the other writings are very good too, and worth a second look. She wrote prolifically-- and deserves to be better known.
The first time I ever encountered this story was at a dramatic interpretation contest in high school-- and when the girl performing this did her descent into madness, it made the hair crawl on the back of my neck. If you really think about what's going on, you too will be creeped out.

Wonders of The Wallpaper
By A Customer
We all know that for every action there is a reaction, especially when treating medical patients. The patient either has a positive or negative reaction. Charlotte Perkins Gilman describes the affects of the medical treatment for women in The Yellow Wallpaper. She writes about a woman that supposedly needs medical treatment and is treated by her own husband. I feel that Gilman uses setting to create a place where the woman feels that she cannot be healed. Also, she has the woman act sane and aware in the beginning of the short story to point out that she does have a chance to be cured. Gilman's work is a great example of showing the medical treatment style in that time and the affects it has on patients. The doctors are not listening to their woman patients, not realizing that woman respond better when they talk out their problems and have someone to listen to and understand them.
Gilman's use of an unlikable setting sets the stage for disaster, which is a great technique. Gilman has the woman set up in a romm that is absolutely dull and depressing. The woman is not satisfied with her room and wishes to be somewhere more pleasant to spend her time. "I don't like our room at all...The paint and paper look as if a boys school used it...it is dull enough to confuse the eye in following..." (Pg, 43) The room has bars on the windows, the wallpaper is torn, and the headbaord is chewed on. It is no place for a patient. I feel that anyone would just want to die.
In the beginning of the story, Gilman has the woman patient sounds sane as if she could be cured in no time at all. The husband does not listen to his wife and he states that she need not do anything to stress herself out. It means that she should not lift a finger. The woman states, "Personally, I disagree with their ideas. Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good." (Pg, 42) I feel that Gilman shows the reader right away the correct medical treatment method. Gilman also slips in the damaging affects that are caused by the phosphites the woman takes. She writes, "My brother is a physician...and says the same thing. So I take the phosphates and phosphites." (Pg, 42) I believe it again points out that Gilman is mocking the medical treatment.
John, the woman's husband, went to medical school and the treatment he uses now is what he learned there. The author is pointing out that it is not personally his fault for the results of the patient, meaning his wife's results. It seems that Gilamn is focusing on the fact that medical doctors are not listening to women patients and becoming aware that women need to be open with their problems. Otherwise they cannot be curred.
It seems that Gilman is trying to explain the problems of the medical treatments for women, in my opinion, is outstanding. Mixing a light tone of writing, using setting poperfully, and ensuring the woman in the story that she is sane for the start. Overall, the short story is a success in acheiving those goals

Think of this as Sackett's Land: Part 2

Sackett's Land and To the Far Blue Mountains make a complete story of the life and times of the Sackett progenitor. The combination is entirely satisfactory. L'Amour had the ability to tell the story well, and he developed that ability with years of work and research. It is probably fortunate for Sackett enthusiasts that he wrote the first books in the series later in his writing career. We benefit from his seasoned skills.

As in his westerns, in this book L'Amour focuses on what he finds interesting and what he thinks the reader will like to know. For the most part, he doesn't go into the technical detail that some authors pursue, but he paints a clear picture. The reader has a feeling of being there, or the strong sense that they could be there, right along with our hero.

The Sackett family saga is the story of an American family. Like all of L'Amour's work, it is wholesome and educational. He consistently hits on themes that his readers recognize, the importance of education and critical thinking, respect for our fellow creatures and the world in which we live, loyalty to family and friends, and taking positive action to shape one's own life. All that and a fun story too, for the cost of five bucks.

The continuing story of Sackett's Land
By Craig D.
This is, in effect, the sequel to Sackett's Land and continues the non-stop adventure of men who comprised our historical roots. Much of the story is unbelievable until you consider our contemporary "soft" perspective versus the immense physical hardships that early pioneers were dealt on a regular basis. As with other Sackett stories, the language can be a bit on the rough side (to match the rough characters in the stories), but not vulgar or profane. Also, the love that is depicted is pure, respectful, rather than eliciting base desires.

Also, there was nothing boring about the Audio Books version of the story. I drove 28 hours in 2 days by myself and did not get sleepy!

Captivating adventure fiction
By Carrie B
Exciting historical fiction which is not only a captivating story with vividly detailed characters but very likely more exact and realistic historically than conventional historians would have us believe.

A very good read
By J. Tant
I recently came across my old stash of Star Trek novels and thought it would be fun to revisit these books I first read as a teenager.

This one, somewhat surprisingly I think, has held up incredibly well. And I think this is largely due to philosophies that Gerrold explored in his book The World of Star Trek. While that book is about, of course, Star Trek, Gerrold gives some great insights into what made the show have legs as well as things that limited the potential of the show…and some of which were incorporated into ST:TNG.

The most visible, of course, is Kirk’s habit of beaming down to every planet. On a ship of 430+ people, is Kirk the only one who can go? Gerrold wrote that no, there should be initial teams made up of highly trained personnel, and the Captain should be staying on the ship. That and other philosophies of Gerrold are on full display in this book, and I have to say it creates a tight and solid read.

Gerrold does, however, tend to fall in love with his own writing from time to time. By that I mean he goes into extreme detail in certain parts for things that aren’t all that important. For example, when the Enterprise comes across the L5 ship, Kirk orders an intercept and Gerrold goes into detail on how Chekov would plot exactly that. Well, honestly I’m reading the book for a Star Trek story, not a base level understanding in astronavigation. And while we’re on the subject, there’s a lot of expository information given by Specks, the ships…librarian or something. He goes into a long lecture about what the L5 is as well as its history…so much so that I think Gerrold felt he had to have an in-story reference to the length of this lecture (Spock mentions that the lieutenant could have delivered this information with more brevity).

BUT, and this is a big one, the story works. It works well. I understand that this book started out as an outline for a Star Trek episode, but the story is far too ambitious for a 45 minute TV show. It reaches. It’s thoughtful (imagine the hesitancy of the ruling caste on the L5 in recognizing that their generations-long journey was in vain). In scenes where Riley is being questioned by the L5 rulers, you can really get the frustration Riley is feeling at trying to point out that the ruler’s worldview is based on faulty assumptions. I kind of like the largeish cast of characters, which is a departure from most ST novels. In sum, it’s an interesting story that is told quite well, expository scenes notwithstanding. It’s worth the buy.

The Galactic Whirlpool
By Shawn Weaver
The last, and by far the best, of the Bantam paperbacks. The author is Star Trek veteran David Gerrold, who by this time had already written scripts for the series ("The Trouble With Tribbles") and the animated series ("The Pirates of Orion") as well as written a book about the series, with both praise and criticism ("The World of Star Trek"). Gerrold was also one of the developers of the Next Generation series. So obviously, he had an intimate knowledge of the characters. That knowledge shows, and shines like a beacon.
Our story: While on patrol of the Klingon border, the Enterprise encounters an odd sensor reading. Closer investigation reveals a slower-than-light ship, built on a huge scale--a self-contained world. Obviously a ship built to ferry thousands of colonists, for many generations, to a new star system. The questions follow: who built it? Where did they come from? Where were they going, and how long have they been travelling? Contact with such a ship is problematic, because they may not be aware that any other civilizations exist to contact them, and to do so may be a violation of the Prime Directive.
Soon, that point becomes moot, as they are found to be on a collision course for the Galactic Whirlpool: a twin black hole, rotating slowly through the galaxy and drawing everything in its path into the immense gravity well. If the Enterprise crew do not interfere, the ship will be destroyed in a matter of months. Now the problem becomes one of how to interfere, so as to cause the least panic and disruption to the peoples' lives.
Gerrold handles the characters expertly here, and finds a full role for Kevin Riley, an officer who had major roles in two TV episodes. Gerrold also impresses some of his own ideas about the series, many of which were also used in the Next Generation series. Gerrold has also researched his science, and brings us many tidbits about the 22nd century and the events that led up to it. He fills in many details that cannot be used in a TV show, due to time constraints. And he even places himself into the story, in the person of an historian nicknamed "Specks."
This is a wonderful novel to read, not just a good Star Trek novel. I can recommend this one highly.

For years I have known that David Gerrold had a Star Trek script that wasn't produced that was about a generation ship that had fallen apart ( think of the Space:1999 episode Mission of the Darians, if that reference makes any sense to you), but somehow I missed the fact that he had adapted it as a novel. So, here it is:
PRO
The characterizations are excellent. When you are inside Kirk, Spock, Sulu, and Chekhov's heads, the characters feel like the ones you saw on the screen that you think you know. The novel expands the character of Kevin Riley, who appeared in a handful of first season episodes. There are some nice callbacks- one to A. E. Van Vogt, one to the animated series, several to people involved in the original series. There are also references to Gerrold's recurring philosopher, Solomon Short, who is referenced a lot in Gerrold's later Chtorr series ( which you should definitely read if you haven't.)

CON
Some of the exposition is a bit heavy- handed. I felt like the ending did not quite gel for me. The Villain of the piece ( if he can be called that) seemed a bit cartoonish.

Despite that, I read the last 100 pages in one sitting, so that must mean something.

Recommended.

The Eternal Husband and Other Stories, by Fyodor Dostoevsky

The Eternal Husband and Other Stories brings together five of Dostoevsky’s short masterpieces rendered into English by two of the most celebrated Dostoevsky translators of our time. Filled with many of the themes and concerns central to his great novels, these short works display the full range of Dostoevsky’s genius. The centerpiece of this collection, the short novel The Eternal Husband, describes the almost surreal meeting of a cuckolded widower and his dead wife’s lover. Dostoevsky’s dark brilliance and satiric vision infuse the other four tales with all-too-human characters, including a government official who shows up uninvited at an underling’s wedding to prove his humanity; a self-deceiving narrator who struggles futilely to understand his wife’s suicide; and a hack writer who attends a funeral and ends up talking with the dead.

The Eternal Husband and Other Stories is sterling Dostoevsky—a collection of emotional power and uncompromising insight into the human condition.

From Kirkus Reviews
A fifth translation of Dostoevsky's fiction by the acclaimed husband-and-wife team, whose revisionist English-language versions restore much of the colloquial vigor and rough humor suppressed or glossed over in earlier translations. Four of the five tales included here date from Dostoevsky's last decade, the 1870s (only the satirical ``A Nasty Anecdote'' is earlier)--the period that Pevear describes in an incisive Preface as a darker and more complex flowering out of Dostoevsky's more ``romantic'' previous fiction. And indeed these stories variously offer interesting late developments of the great Russian writer's distinctive preoccupations with the permutations of traditional morality (``The Meek One'') and with the shadowy borderline between alienation and dementia (``Bobok,'' ``The Dream of a Ridiculous Man''). Best of all is the superb title novella, which unforgettably explores the sadomasochistic relationship between a cuckolded husband and his wife's beleaguered former lover. One of Dostoevsky's strangest and strongest works, it's a rigorous test for Pevear and Volokhonsky, but one that they pass with flying colors. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Considered Dostoevsky's Masterpiece
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
I started reading The Eternal Husband, a taut novella by Dostoevsky, after I read the literary critic James Wood praise it. By all accounts it is his masterpiece. It even as a style of its own, a compression and economy that Doestoevsky isn't known for. Premise: A cuckolded widow visits the lover of his recently deceased wife to torment him. He never lets his betrayer know that he knows or doesn't know about the affair. Much of the torment is rooted in the betrayer's uncertainty. For pyschological drama, if you like this kind of discomfiting intensity, where the main character seems an inch away from descending into complete madness, you might also like The Horned Man by James Lasdun and Contempt by Alberto Moravia.

Generally Impressive: A Good Introduction to Dostoevsky
By Jack Ridley
The book contains five stories translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky and an introduction by Richard Pevear. The Eternal Husband is 150 pages. The other four stories are short. They are good examples of the writings and the literary techniques of Dostoevsky including the use of dreams.

I have read most of Dostoevsky's major novels. There are about 10 or so available in English, and the present collection is not a substitute for reading the other works. I still like The Gambler and The Brothers Karamazov as his two most interesting works, followed by The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, and Demons. Perhaps The Gambler is not his best work, but it was the first one that I had read. He wrote it with his second wife in 30 days. The Gambler is a short but entertaining - and reflects Dostoevsky`s addiction to gambling. The present works are similar to Notes From the Underground, but less intense, less creative, and more varied in subject matter.

The Eternal Husband involves an extra-marital affair by the male protagonist with a married woman and the subsequent relationship between the man, Velchaninov, and the husband, Pavel Pavlovich. The story is set years later after the death of the wife and uses a dream sequence near the beginning. It reflects a love triangle situation found in his other writings and is loosely related to the circumstances of Dostoevsky`s first marriage, although not identical.

Another story is The Dream of a ridiculous Man. Dostoevsky uses the dream sequences as a vehicle to tell a utopian story about an ideal society. Again, the dream is a literary mechanism used by Dostoevsky. This is related to the short but unusual story Bobok. It is set in a cemetery where the dead are holding conversations. The characters use flights of fancy, dreams, and communicate with the dead. The dead characters lack morals, even dead.

The other two stories, A Nasty Anecdote and The Meek One, are more conventional stories. The first involves an official who accidentally attends the wedding of a poor government worker, a man who works in his department. The official drinks too much and causes much commotion and embarrasses the groom and the wedding party. In short, he makes a fool of himself. Dostoevsky touches on his themes of the disintegration of human life and the use of the "unexpected" gathering to expose false ideas and situations.

The Meek One is about a man who is trying to deal with the suicide of his wife. Again, the story is short. But, he uses the "stream of consciousness" technique - possibly one of the first uses of the technique in the modern literature according to Pevear - years before Joyce.

5 stars and a surprisingly good selection of short stories.

Wonderful. Even better for Dostoevsky-philes
By infinity8
This is a fabulous collection. "The Eternal Husband" is quite interesting and features the trademark Doestoevsian psychological interplay (along the lines of that found between _Crime and Punishment_'s Raskolnikov and Porfiry Petrovich, or _The Idiot_'s Rogozhin and Prince Nikolaevich). However, the short stories included are, imho, superior to "The Eternal Husband." "A Nasty Anecdote" is a very funny satire, especially if the reader is privileged to know a bit about post-"emancipation" Russia. "The Meek One" studies the fascinating, yet highly unhealthy relationship between a husband and wife. At the same time, it meditates on the uses of love in much the manner of _King Lear_. "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man" features the sort of Christ figure found in _The Idiot_ or _The Brothers Karamazov_'s Alyosha. Warning: this story may make you cry.

However wonderful the stories, Richard Pevear's introductory essay alone is worth the price of admission-- with a caveat. If you are familiar with most of Dostoevsky's novels, then you will understand and appreciate Pevear's analysis of Dostoevskian philosophy-- the stories in this collection are even arranged in an order that supports Pevear's theories. However, those unfamiliar with Dostoevsky's work will be very lost.

P.S. These stories are enjoyable for everyone, but those familiar with Dostoevsky will appreciate them even more. I would suggest that Dostoevsky first-timers start with _Crime and Punishment_ or _Notes from Underground_.

Lando: The Sacketts: A Novel, by Louis L'Amour

In Lando, Louis L’Amour has created an unforgettable portrait of a unique American hero.

For six long years Orlando Sackett survived the horrors of a brutal Mexican prison. He survived by using his skills as a boxer and by making three vows. The first was to exact revenge on the hired killers who framed him. The second was to return to his father. And the third was to find Gin Locklear. But the world has changed a lot since Lando left it. His father is missing. The woman he loves is married. And the killers want him dead. Hardened physically and emotionally, Lando must begin an epic journey to resolve his past, even if it costs him his life.

From the Publisher
Sackett got to Texas with a well-oiled dogleg, a racing mule that didn't look worth its salt and a damn good idea of the whereabouts of buried gold across the border in Mexico. In Mexico he had bad luck. His party had to run for it, and when Lando stood rear guard they pulled out and left him. Six years in a Mexican prison put muscles in his arms, fire in his heart and pure recklessness in his head. When he caught up with the men who betrayed him, it made no difference that he didn't have a gun.

From the Inside Flap
One of the great sagas of our time, the chronicle of the Sackett family is perhaps the crowning achievement of one of our greatest storytellers. In Lando, Louis L'Amour has created an unforgettable portrait of a unique hero.

Not THE Sackett, just SACKETT!
By Denny Smith
The title of this book is simply SACKETT, and it is the best of the series, even better than The Daybreakers and To the Far Blue Mountauns. Tell is my favorite of the Sackett brothers. He is the easiest to identify with, and I enjoyed reading this book, which introduces you to one of L'Amour's best characters. Sackett is a good book for anyone just starting to read L'Amour and is a good lead-in to the rest of the Sackett Series.

This book has the makings to become a classic.
By Amazon Customer
When I read this book I got a rush because I could tell it was a good one from the beginning. The Idea of the book was what got me interested in the first place. I had read some of the other Sackett books by Louis L'Amour and this one got me jumpin. It is just the Idea of every one coming to Tell's aide when he needs it the most. It has the makings of becoming a classic if more people would recognize it's greatness. I read it almost tree months ago and I can remember every bit about it. I am Seventeen and if I can like this book so much I am almost positive that others my age, older, and Younger would love it too. I loved reading it so much that I could not put it down.

Thumbs Up!
By A Customer
This has to be one of the best of Louis Lamour. What makes this one stand apart is that it is less predictable than his other novels, in that everyone doesn't end up riding away into the sunset. It has been years since I read this novel, but I can still remember it vividly.
