The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Bantam Classic), by Mark Twain

Hilariously picaresque, epic in scope, alive with  the poetry and vigor of the American people, Mark  Twain's story about a young boy and his journey  down the Mississippi was the first great novel to  speak in a truly American voice. Influencing  subsequent generations of writers -- from Sherwood  Anderson to Twain's fellow Missourian,  T.S. Eliot, from Ernest Hemingway and William  Faulkner to J.D. Salinger --  Huckleberry Finn, like the river  which flows through its pages, is one of the great  sources which nourished and still nourishes the  literature of America.

Amazon.com Review
A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. The recent discovery of the first half of Twain's manuscript, long thought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and other variations present in the first half of the handwritten manuscript, as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manuscript pages, is indispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manuscript indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write an even darker, more confrontational book than the one he finally published.

From Publishers Weekly
Considered the first great American novel, part of Finn's charm is the wisdom and sobering social criticism deftly lurking amongst the seemingly innocent observations of the uneducated Huck and the even-less-educated escaped slave, Jim. William Dufris's voice, unpretentious and disarming, like the book's main characters, seems the perfect armature on which to hang this literary strategy. Although he does an expert job with the entire cast, Dufris's delivery of Jim's dialogue is his crowning achievement. Out of context, Dufris's Jim might sound mocking and racist, due to his expert delivery of Twain's regional vernacular. Ignorance and intelligence, however, are not mutually exclusive, and taken as a whole, Jim's mind and heart come shining through, allowing the listener to reflect on their own assumptions. Tantor Media includes the entire text as a digital e-book on the final CD, a wise and thoughtful move in a market with swift and changing currents.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-All the highwater tales of Huck's journey are in this abridged versionAhis faked death, the Jackson Island sojourn, the Grangerford-Shepherdson feud, the Duke and the King, and his reunion with Tom Sawyer. Along the way, we are treated to a sensual feast of the sights, smells, and rhythms of the Mississippi River and the humanistic education of Huck that culminates in his assisting in Jim's escape. The familiar adventures of Huck and runaway slave Jim's odyssey on a raft floating down the Mississippi have been well documented previously in audio format with noted versions read by Ed Begley, Will Wheaton (both from Dove), and the 1985 Grammy nominated Durkin Hayes production read by Dick Cavett. This version, beautifully read by actor Mike McShane, is a wonderful contribution to the recorded Twain canon. McShane handles multiple characterizations well, but excels in Huck's folksy narrative voice and Jim's understated power and dignity. School and public libraries should not miss this excellent rendition.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn:Unabridged and Illustrated

CLASSIC. I wanted a copy before new versions may be "abridged" to remove the "n" word. It's all a part of history at that time and is a classic to keep.

There has been nothing as good since. ” I do find the language jarring
By John Sieben
Don't read my review. Read what Hemingway has to say about Huckleberry Finn. I can't resist a short Hemingway quote: “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”

I do find the language jarring. The repeated use of what we now refer to as "the N word" is regrettable, though I am sure the language is historically accurate. The story takes place in a time when other human beings were held as chattel, bought and sold, families broken up at the whim of a legal owner. That's the sin, not what name was put on the enslaved people.

Also, as Hemingway also observes, the final chapters, devoted to Tom Sawyer's plots to free Jim, get tedious.

All in all, a great read.

Shameful and pathetic...
By Bigmouth
It's shameful and pathetic that any publisher would presume to censor Mark Twain by sanitizing Huckleberry Finn as Barron's has done. I urge anyone who loves literature to boycott this travesty of an edition.

Tom Healy was in trouble. His theatrical troupe needed to get to Alder Gulch, Montana, and the weather was turning. Andy Barker promised Tom he could get them there safely, but Tom was reluctant to trust him: he had the lives of three actresses to consider, and his personal feelings for Janice further heightened his concern. Then King Mabry showed up. Although Tom didn’t like the way he looked at Janice, he could see that Mabry made Barker uneasy. So Tom invited Mabry to join them. Tom was right to be worried, because Barker had a plan. He knew that the wagons carried something more than actors and scenery. He and his men were going to steal it any way they could. And that included murder.

From the Publisher
It was a hard land that bred hard men to hard ways. King Mabry survived by his guns. He wasn't proud of his deadly skill, nor was he ashamed. He just lived with it every hard day on the frontier. When a traveling theatrical troupe hired a ruthless killer to guide them through the Wyoming wilderness, King Mabry--his guns at the ready-set out to follow their trail, and not blizzards, nor Indians, nor the wily guide would stop him.

The King Mabry way
By A Customer
Easily in my top ten L'amours! The story may sound familiar - innocents led astray by sweettalking baddies and hero to the rescue. Thinking about it it seems to fuse "Westward the tide" and "The empty land"! But still the way L'amour develops the story - his dark portrayal of the hero - the way he builds the relationships between the characters - the action scenes - the not-so unpredictable twist in the end (quite like "The Empty Land"), give the work its individuality that will remain in your memory for a while. It still is in mine after years!

Hellava Novel
By Edwin W.
This is one of Mr. Lamour's first books as the copyright in mine said 1955. Although I have seen a lot of themes repeated in later books. This book was a charm to read. A lot of wilderness survival in this book, compared to some of the others. It was a quick read and a pleasant one. The main character King Mabry I would have liked to see in his other books, but I doubt I will. I have read 15 book from Lamour at the time of this review. I would recommend it. For being a earlier example of his work, just goes to show he was always a good writer.

Two of O'Neill's Earliest Works
By Gary F. Taylor
Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953) is generally considered the greatest American playwright of the 20th Century. Today casual readers and playgoers are most likely to know his work through two plays written in the early 1940s: the celebrated The Iceman Cometh and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Long Day's Journey Into Night. But the great bulk of O'Neill's work was done between about 1914 and 1933--and although the power of his later work is undeniable, it was actually his earlier work that led to his 1936 Nobel Prize for Literature.

BEYOND THE HORIZON was the first full-length O'Neill drama to reach the stage, opening first as a matinee-only show in February 1920. Notices were extremely good, and the show quickly moved to a regular-schedule venue, where it enjoyed considerable critical and popular support and became the first of four O'Neill scripts to win the Pulitzer Prize.

The story concerns two farming brothers. Robert is physically delicate, something of a dreamer, and longs to visit distant lands "beyond the horizon;" Andrew, robust and outgoing, is content to remain on the farm. When Robert receives the opportunity to take a long ocean voyage that may restore his health, he jumps at the chance--but fate intervenes in the form of Andrew's girlfriend Ruth, whom Robert secretly loves. Ruth confesses to Robert that she prefers him, and so the brothers switch plans and destinies: Robert will remain on the farm with Ruth; Andrew will go "beyond the horizon." But the decision proves costly. Robert remains unsuited to farm life, his marriage turns sour, and Andrew's return sparks unpleasant personal revelations that lead to tragedy.

At the time it debuted, critics applauded O'Neill's power--but they also condemned the play's final act, which seemed miscalculated and overwrought, and which failed to reach the note of grand tragedy for which the play strove. This criticism remains as valid today as it did in 1920, and read today the play also seems very much of its time and therefore distinctly dated. It is rarely revived. Still, for all its flaws, BEYOND THE HORIZON has moments of tremendous power, and when compared with other dramas of the era it is easy to see what all the fuss was about. It also begins the sure consolidation of the basic theme that O'Neill will mine for much of his career: the belief that each person is his own prisoner, and that the prison can be escaped in but one way.

THE EMPEROR JONES reached the stage the same year in November, and of the two it is clearly the more significant play and flatly stunned audiences with its unexpected content and style. In this instance, the story concerns "Emperor Jones," an American black man of great physical presence but limited insight. After enduring repressive racism in his own nation, he makes his way to a remote island, where he bluffs his way to the throne--but instead of benefiting from his own experiences and working to create a just society, he recreates the oppression he himself has known.

The play actually begins with Jones facing a rebellion. Jones has anticipated this: with considerable hidden wealth, he will make his escape through the jungle and leave the island by sea. But he has miscalculated. The jungle is strange to him at night, and as he flees his own past rises up in ghostly images before him, leading him to gradually divest himself of all the false grandeur to which he has aspired. In a very real sense, his dash to freedom becomes a descent into a hell he has made for himself--and with each scene the pursuing drums grow louder, driving him on to destruction.

Unlike BEYOND THE HORIZON, THE EMPEROR JONES is frequently revived--but like many O'Neill scripts it is a difficult read. On the page, O'Neill's construction seems mechanical in a way that it does not when you actually see it, and although O'Neill provides a great deal of descriptive stage direction it is extremely difficult to imagine how the show actually plays out before an audience. Given the flaws of BEYOND THE HORIZON and the challenges of THE EMPEROR JONES, I do not really recommend them for the casual reader--but for any one interested in O'Neill BEYOND THE HORIZON is an essential--and for any one interested in 20th Century theatre THE EMPEROR JONES is required reading, pure and simple. I give three stars to the former, five stars to the latter, and split the difference.

Not a really biography, but a good novel
By Paula Anne Sharkey Lemire
This book does not really capture the historic Tekakwitha, the frail, scarred Mohawk girl who embrace Christianity with unfailing joy and zeal. The Kateri Tekakwitha of this novel is a sensitive teenager, searching for meaning, for truth during a chaotic time when her Mohawk culture was encountering that of the French and Dutch. While this is not the luminous, spiritual Kateri who now awaits sainthood, it is nevertheless a very readable story, filled with great detail into the time and enviroment in which Kateri lived and died.

brilliant historical fiction
By B. Sting
upstate New York in all its crazy wildness, in an old time portrait, featuring a saint, just like stuff that happens today, not much different, except, now, there are too few courageous heroes, same amount of savages--heavy, mysterious, authentic

Jack Casey has written a interesting book with inspirational use of words. He is a creative writer.

I have read poorly written stories about Kateri Tekakwitha and this one is not. However, this book does not justify the true story or the real character, Kateri. I do believe that the author based his writings on facts written by Jesuits.

Most people today have no clue how deeply embellished these histories really are, Jesuits as well as other past historical writers wanted the world to believe that all Native people were cruel savages with no morals. They embellished and exaggerated to win over society, to make people agree with their cause, or to just simply cause a war. The fact is Whites wanted Indian land, they would use any means to get it.

Past writings may say that Indians engaged in wild sex orgies, or abuse their family like in this novel, however, oral history, pictures, and other journalists( who lived among the Natives without a cause), will tell you something completely and trustfully different. The sad thing is this history seems to be put aside for the more wilder version, people today, who do not spend the time to research and educate themselves continue these lies without knowledge and teach them to the younger generation. One day, Native heritage will be nothing more than a pack of lies that justifies the annihilation of a race.

If you are looking for a more trustworthy or true-related story about Kateri, I suggest you look for another book.

An uber-snarky intergalactic James Bond, if Bond were a family man and had a seemingly unlimited supply of just the right gasses, smoke-bombs and weaponry, and had a profound distaste for killing people. A quick fun read. Will seek out previous installments of the Rat's adventures. Harrison throws in a bunch of subtle goodies such as references to books concerning political dirty tricks as The Education of A Prince by Mac O'Velly. Snark.

Definitely gets my vote.
By C. I. Black
The Stainless Steel Rat stories are generally entertaining , sometimes amusing, written with a sense of the ridiculous and a touch of political comment.

"The Stainless Steel Rat For President" is my favourite of them all. Jim Di Griz (alias the Stainless Steel Rat) takes his beautiful but deadly wife Angelina to the delightful holiday world of Paraiso-Aqui, which bears a strong resemblance to the Latin American countries of our Earth - Hispanic and full of gorgeous women, brave men and excellent rum.

Unfortunately Paraiso-Aqui suffers from the worst of Latin American politics. The whole planet is ruled by the sadistic and evil tyrant General-President Julio Zapolote. He has stayed in power by winning 41 consecutive rigged elections (and by regular use of longevity drugs!) Jim decides that Zapolote is going to be unlucky the 42nd time...

From this point on the plot involves a car full of hidden technology, unpredictable political rallies, desperate chases , short skirts , spacecraft rustling and sabotaging of election broadcasts.

I've taken part in about 25 elections and never seen spacecraft rustling once, but this book actually conveys the EXCITEMENT of a close election better than any other book I've read. Every decent politician would love to take part in a contest like this one.

On a more serious note, this book serves as a warning to those who would like to get rid of old-fashioned paper ballots and rely on computers!

and instantly loved the stories
By Geoffrey Anderson
I discovered the SSR series when I was in High School, and instantly loved the stories. I have read, and re-read all these and many more of Harry Harrison's novels many times. Fun reads, captivating for teen boys, but entertaining as I enter my 6th decade. I am a huge fan, and have long loved Harrison's work.

I have probably bought this at least three times, and worn out the paperbacks, but now that they are available electronically, they will be favorites on my kindle or whatever reader I have in the future.

Lyric and sensual, D.H. Lawrence's last novel is one of the major works of fiction of the twentieth century. Filled with scenes of intimate beauty, explores the emotions of a lonely woman trapped in a sterile marriage and her growing love for the robust gamekeeper of her husband's estate. The most controversial of Lawrence's books, Lady Chatterly's Lover joyously affirms the author's vision of individual regeneration through sexual love. The book's power, complexity, and psychological intricacy make this a completely original work—a triumph of passion, an erotic celebration of life.

Amazon.com Review
Perhaps the most famous of Lawrence's novels, the 1928 Lady Chatterley's Lover is no longer distinguished for the once-shockingly explicit treatment of its subject matter--the adulterous affair between a sexually unfulfilled upper-class married woman and the game keeper who works for the estate owned by her wheelchaired husband. Now that we're used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it's apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, that Lawrence was a masterful and lyrical writer, whose story takes us bodily into the world of its characters.

By Michael W Ressel
An excellent novel. I first read it in the late 1950's while a High School Senior, then twice since during different stages of my life. Each time I've seen it differently. Although the story and its characters are the same, of course, it's really a human drama, about individuals, society, class structure, many things really. So how I see it is that with people, culture, society, etc., everything changes and nothing changes.

If you read this in college, read it again as a grown-up.
By Mrs. Chucker
Sure, it's titillating, but, more than that, Lady Chatterly's Lover is an accurate look at the way a woman thinks when she's trapped in a dull, purposeless existence. The affair with Oliver is beautifully crafted and sweet. DH Lawrence understands the complexities of relationships and human nature.

From Publishers Weekly
This audio edition of Trumbo's classic 1939 novel of war's insanity begins as a bit of a slog because of the lengthy padding at its start. With two introductions, from Cindy Sheehan and Ron Kovic, that attempt to place the novel in the context of more recent armed conflicts in both Iraq and Vietnam, it is the better part of a disc before the book properly begins. Once it does, though, the slog ceases. Trumbo's novel is spine-tingling in its immediacy and horror, and William Dufris (while occasionally fumbling around in his bag of voices) mostly gives the words room to breathe. For this book, little more is necessary. A Citadel paperback.(Apr.)

i am now reading the city of fire and i have to tell you that after reading the earlier revewsi was expecting a very boring and uninteresting book ,but i have to say that this book is great.the way she describes scenes are wonderful and the way she puts little gems of scripture in the story just adds more to the story.the characters are so believable and the moral fiber of the book makes it a great read.so dont always believe every reveiw that you read because you just might miss a great book

Unique
By Voracious Reader
CITY OF FIRE is a different kind of novel. Much of the story is about Billy Gaston, a boy on the brink of manhood. Billy is basically good, but he gets mixed up with some kidnappers and works hard to make everything come out right.

Billy's two favorite people are Marilyn (Lynn) Severn, the minister's daughter, and Mark Carter. They were childhood friends who fell in love, but, when Mark hears someone say he isn't good enough for her, he turns cold to her and goes off to prove them right. Marilyn accepts all this without an explanation and stoically goes on with her life of playing the organ and helping others. I thought this was a weak link in the plot.

I found the characters very interesting, even Laurie Shafton, the rich, spoiled, lady's man, who had never been told "no," until Marilyn. The plot had some parts that didn't seem quite believable, like when the doctor at a hospital impulsively left his job and took all day to drive Billy home. I still found the story intereresting. I even thought the archaic slang some reviewers mentioned to be chaming and add to the early 20th century feel of the book. Some of the dialect (I guess it was supposed to be New York state) was a little difficult and didn't ring true to me, but, in the end, I was glad I read the novel.

Archaic but charming with a good message
By Spirited
As with all Grace Livingston Hill stories, this has a moral, but it took a while to get there. The beginning was slow, and the threads very disparate for a long time. But once the story started rolling it was good. The slang was archaic, which made it hard to follow at times. However, that is part of the interest for me - to see how people in the past used language. Once you accept the language and the Hill formula for the plot (all the good guys live happily ever after), it is entertaining. I enjoyed it. It was worth wading through the beginning.

The Prince (Bantam Classics), by Niccolo Machiavelli

Here is the world's most famous master plan for seizing and holding power.  Astonishing in its candor The Prince even today remains a disturbingly realistic and prophetic work on what it takes to be a prince . . . a king . . . a president.  When, in 1512, Machiavelli was removed from his post in his beloved Florence, he resolved to set down a treatise on leadership that was practical, not idealistic.  In The Prince he envisioned would be unencumbered by ordinary ethical and moral values; his prince would be man and beast, fox and lion.  Today, this small sixteenth-century masterpiece has become essential reading for every student of government, and is the ultimate book on power politics.

Amazon.com Review
When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan

Review
“[Machiavelli] can still engage our attention with remarkable immediacy, and this cannot be explained solely by the appeal of his ironic observations on human behaviour. Perhaps the most important thing is the way he can compel us to reflect on our own priorities and the reasoning behind them; it is this intrusion into our own defenses that makes reading him an intriguing experience. As a scientific exponent of the political art Machiavelli may have had few followers; it is as a provocative rhetorician that he has had his real impact on history.” –from the Introduction by Dominic Baker-Smith

One of the most influential books of all time
By T. Simons
The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile.

"The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.

Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.

This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.

As a final note, if anyone has recommendations for histories of Italy in this time period, please link me to them in a comment -- after reading this, I want to read more about the era. Thanks!

Machiavelli's classic, now for Kindle
By Mr Dad Guy
This review is of the (currently free) Kindle edition of The Prince.

As others have stated at much greater length and with far greater eloquence, this is one of the most important books of political thought and philosophy ever written, and a truly timeless classic. As such, the fact that it's available for free on Kindle makes this a terrific deal, worth every single penny and many more. All the usual conveniences of Kindle applies here: very fast to download via Whispernet, the handiness of being able to annotate and highlight important passages, bookmarking pages you want to reference again later, etc. The slickness of the Kindle format and capabilities plus the inherit worthiness of the book itself easily nets 4 stars.

It's been about forever since I last read The Prince, plus I don't really know anything about Italian, so I'm not really fit to talk about the quality of the translation. Suffice it to say that it's a fairly easy book to read and make sense of, but again I can't speak to how true this particular edition is to its source material.

Unfortunately, there are a few problems with this edition of The Prince that need to be mentioned, and which in the end detract a little from the overall score. The first and biggest is in the formatting of the book. In short, it looks like a plain-text notepad file converted into a Kindle book; there's no navigable Table of Contents or chapter breaks as with most commercial Kindle books, and the book itself flows from the title page almost directly into the background about Machiavelli and then from there straight into The Prince itself, with scarcely a break in the text to mark the transition. For someone well versed in The Prince this probably isn't much of an issue, but for the more casual reader it's a little distracting and may confuse some. The other problem is more one of personal preference, which is that there's no annotations alongside the text to put specific lines into context. Again, for someone well versed in Machiavelli's life and the real-world examples he uses throughout The Prince, this probably isn't a significant issue. For more casual readers, having a little context for the examples he uses would be helpful from time to time.

In the end, you get what you pay for, and as the above-reviewed version of The Prince was free, I can't complain too much. It's brilliant, it's relevant, and it's very convenient to have on my Kindle. What more do you want for the price?

Translation, translation, translation.
By Nick Jamilla
I was quite hopeful to have a copy of "The Prince" on my kindle, but as is often the case, you get what you pay for. And this edition is free.

Other reviewers have mentioned that the translation is not the best. And indeed, my hope was to insert highlights from my hard copy to the kindle edition and eventually toss away the crusty yellow text which I picked up in Japan. Instead, I found that the Daniel Donno text (Bantam) was clear and aphoristic; the Marriot (Kindle/online) text was muddled, and subsumed in a larger narrative.

Example:
Bantam: (Chapter V) "A city which is used to freedom is more easily controlled by means of its own citizens than by any other, provided one chooses not to destroy it."

Kindle: "... and therefore he who would keep a city accustomed to freedom will hold it more easily by the means of its own citizens than in any other way."

Italian: E più facilmente si tiene una città usa a vivere libera con il mezzo de' sua cittadini, che in alcuno altro modo, volendola preservare.

I will not deign to judge the actual translation from Italian to English; rather, I judge the Bantam edition English as much easier to understand. And while I would not typically judge prose because it rings well as a sound bite, I think Machiavelli's intent, as well as the nature of the book as a list of rules (thoughts) for the successful prince, lends itself more to aphorism.

The Marriot translation, on which this kindle edition is copied, can be found at About.com ([...]). While the translation is not better because it is found on a website instead of the kindle, at least one can click toggle back and forth between English and the original Italian.

If you want a good text for study, buy the The Prince (Bantam Classics). Of course, you'd have to pay for it.

Though well intentioned, the does say: "This book was converted from its physical edition to the digital format by a community of volunteers." Again, you get what you pay for. In fact, that's what editors get paid for.

Lastly, my one star is given because of the translation, not to "the prince."

The WASP Voldemort
By porkchop
Wexford, the aloof, manipulative newspaper editor at a postwar Devon school, is startlingly similar to young Tom Riddle, of Harry Potter fame (they are even the same age) although Mr. Wexford is definitely a more determined sociopath.

His adversary is an noisy and aggressive Nazi sympathizer, and it's hard to say which of the two of them is more repellant. Not that they're boring -- I was completely interested in them the whole time.

The book explores questions about what it's "okay" to think and express, how patriotism plays out in an atmosphere of disillusionment, how well-meaning or even brave impulses can be perverted when there's no good place to act them out.

So, it's interesting, but it's...a real come down from A Separate Peace, where the characters, no matter how awful their mistakes were, were always striving to be good people. Knowles makes it clear there's no such thing as Finny in his postwar world.

The characters were not as engaging and vivid as Knowles was capable of -- disappointing really, but only because we know he's done better.

The structure could have been better as well. You'll notice places where key plot information is given only a few paragraphs befor it becomes relevant. Some of the information could have been placed better.

Also, Knowles may or may not have crossed the line between making subtle points about social class and downright snobbery.

The dialogue is fantastic, though. The classroom scenes are the best. Of course, if you think that prep school is even slightly tiresome as a setting, you should just avoid this one.

Knowles Style Keeps It Up, But...
By denise napoli
'A Seperate Peace', Knowle's best known novel, is hailed not only for its absolute perception of the adolescent mind but also for its highly memorable and beautifully crafted style. His ability to move from this eloquent language into dialogue is another one of his greatest achievements in the novel. 'Peace Breaks Out', set again at Devon and referring to the characters of his earlier novel only fleetingly, lacks the storyline that appealed to so many young people- mysel included. His characters are far less intruiging- there is the tainted war hero, the bitter genius, the naive brother. ALthough they are all important, they simply do not resonate the way the protagonaists of his earlier novel do. However, whatever the novel lacks in character it more than makes up for in style. His language is so perfectly crafted, and his dialogue so vibrant, that reading it from a writer's point of view is truly inspiring. His language truly builds, and falls, and is absolutely melodic. His perceptions, handed to us so brilliantly, are stunning. John Knowles created a little-known phenomenon with 'peace Breaks Out' that is, unfortunately, better appreciated by lovers of language than by lovers of story itself.

A nice addition.
By A Customer
In John Knowles' "A Separate Peace" the reader is taken on a visit to the Devon School, a college preparatory school in New Hampshire. Through marvelously descriptive narration and telling dialogue, Knowles dissects the adolescent mind of the boys who were faced with the horrors of World War II. In his follow-up novel, John Knowles again takes the reader to Devon, and explores the psyche of similar boys at the time just after the War. Though the story is a bit more confined than that in the first book, I think that it has to be. This new batch of characters must look to themselves for a reason for the way they are, rather than to the oppressive state of the world. Knowles gives a brilliant depiction of the aggression that still remains in all of us, even in times of Peace. If you loved "A Separate Peace" as so many others do, myself included, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. It IS different, but it should be.
