This features the same level of sus pense and character development as ``Nancy Drew.'' The word processor must have gotten stuck on sparkle, as eyes constantly sparkle, although they sometimes twinkle for variety. The cli max, in which Liz and Jess face a crazed and bloodied murderer in an un derground parking garage, will satisfy fans deeply, especially as Jess proves herself a hero.

Wakefield detectives
By irmita
Mystery, suspense and intrigue are all present in this book that is part of a super chiller collection. The Wakefield twins are unexpectedly involved in a murder mystery while spending the summer at an internship at The Sweet Valley News, in which they may become the next victims! Their brother's friend is the main suspect, and is he really capable of such a crime? THat's what the twins intend to find out for themselves.

Unbelievable tools (I mean the characters)
By Swank Ivy
Even though I didn't read Sweet Valley, I think I thought this might be a "first book" that would interest me (but it was only "Super Thriller #1," not an actual beginning of a series, so I was in the dark about a lot of stuff). I also didn't like murder mysteries or thrillers. So I honestly have little idea why I even tried to read this. Anyway, there's a complex plot that involves murder, misplaced blame, and Jessica Wakefield being a horrible conniving person in an attempt to seem interesting to a guy she has a crush on. Seriously, in these books I guess it's helpful for plots if you have a character who's always causing problems by being an empty sack of a person with zero morality and selfishness levels off the charts. She lies about arson and writes a fake love letter all in an attempt to get a hot guy who's a mystery writer to pay attention to her and spend time with her. They're both unbelievable tools (and I mean "unbelievable" in both a literal and a figurative way). And for the sake of forcing drama, the teen twins who are the protagonists in this story are frequently put in contrived situations where they are alone in dangerous places (and deliberately stranded by responsible adults who should know better). And a murderer gets defeated through a silly "oops I mistook one twin for the other" set of shenanigans, with some ridiculousness involving one of the twins actually knocking the bad guy out with a tire iron. At least actual police are involved in this one when MURDER HAPPENS, but there is far too much silliness with being concerned about how they're getting to PARTIES when, you know, they're in the middle of FIGURING OUT AN UNSOLVED MURDER. This is part of why I tend to dislike mysteries unless they're more than just mysteries; many mystery writers don't allow characters to drive the story so everything just reads like they're puppets having their strings pulled to go to the next unlikely interaction that lets the plot move along. It was poorly executed and I found the characters' reactions inauthentic and stilted.

Watch out Nancy Drew! Step aside Hardy Boyz
By kibblesthepig
This book is, dare I say, suspenseful! Yeah this is actually a good one. Jess and Liz have more enemies and witness more murders than two gang members. Honestly, I guess it isn't easy being beautiful! Im pretty sure (without checking) that this is the first Super thriller, so what better place to start eh? Also Murder on the line or something close to that is another pretty good one

Classic Nero Wolfe
By David Kudler
Having read just about all of the Nero Wolfe series, I have to say, this one contains all of the elements that make Rex Stout's detective novels wildly entertaining, without most of the elements that make some of them maddening

In this mystery, the utterly unswashbuckling Wolfe is revealed, in his younger, svelter days, to have been quite a romantic. Not only did he fight on the anti-Imperial side in Montenegro during the Great War, but he adopted and may even have actually sired a young girl.

To his shock, this young Yugoslav maiden--whom he had lost track of--reappears in his life, up to her neck in a particularly messy, intricate affair that may or may not include missing diamonds, a dead body or two, international intrigue, and a bellboy's uniform. For all of the peeks into Wolfe's previously unsuspected soul, he remains as crumudgeonly and as immovable as ever. Archie Goodwin, of course, remains the wisecracking, milk-drinking sidekick, flirting with anything in a skirt and even giving a Nazi agent a black eye just for the fun of it.

The joy of these books is their marriage of the American gumshoe attitude and the British cozy focus on character. Where they generally fall short is their plotting. This entry in the series is, without a doubt, the most successfully rounded out of the lot. Stout manages to keep the mystery truly mysterious, and yet never manages to confuse the reader so thoroughly that s/he can't find the exit. The plot actually ends on the last page--many of the Nero Wolfe mysteries fizzle out, wrapping up a chapter or two before the end, leaving nothing but rumination and grumbling for the final pages. Others seem never quite to wrap up all the loose ends. Here, the conclusion is both inevitable and unexpected--utterly satisfying.

Presenting...Wolfe's Daughter???
By A. Wolverton
'Over My Dead Body' finds a young lady who arrives at Wolfe's door claiming to be Wolfe's daughter. Wow! What a way to start the book! Things begin to heat up even more when the young lady is suspected of a murder in a fencing studio.
This is the seventh entry in the Wolfe series, and it is an entertaining one. Wolfe is in his usual beer-drinking, orchid-loving form, using that brilliant mind of his to sort out any difficulty. In this book, we begin to see a little more depth in two of the recurring minor characters in Wolfe's employ: First, Fred Durkin, the lumbering, bumbling guy who is not too bright, but is always there when Wolfe needs him. Second, Saul Panzer, who is probably just as good a detective as Archie (well, almost), but is completely no-nonsense. (And Archie thinks he's better looking than Saul.)
I'd give the book 4.5 stars if I could. The only problem is Wolfe says a few words and lines that really aren't in character for him. This would only distract readers who have read a lot of the books. Since this book is still fairly early in the series, Stout can be forgiven. 'Over My Dead Body' is definitely a Wolfe book not to be missed.

First rate Nero Wolfe
By Roger Long
This book hits on all cylinders. The plot is excellent, intricate but clear. The characters are well drawn. The atmosphere, New York on the eve of World War II, is almost palpable. The dialogue is perfect. I'm at a loss as to what else to say about the book except, "Read it."

A Britsh undercover agent is murdered at a Manhattan fencing school, skewered by an epee with a gizmo attached that turns it into a weapon sans blunt end. Yugoslav women who are instructors there are possible suspects, one of whom is Nero Wolfe's adopted daughter from his days as an ill advised Austrian agent in the Balkans, pre World War, before we started numbering them. This alone is a startling revelation about Wolfe. Wolfe slender? Youthful? Abroad, outside, involved with people? I was astonished.

As usual, the beer drinking, orchid collecting, erudite, corpulent food lover Nero Wolfe declines, under any circumstances, to leave his brownstone abode with a greenhouse rooftop for his rare flowers. Using Archie, his assistant, as legs, Wolfe solves the baffling case. I knew he would. He's solved all the other mysteries in the Nero Wolfe books I've read.

Mystery fans who have not read mysteries from the golden age (pre-1950) do not know what they are missing. There is no sex to lure the lascivious reader, very little violence, no profanity. What there is (and this book is an excellent example of the sub-genre) is intelligence.
That's a rare commodity in most modern mysteries.

This Novel Stands with The Great Gatsby
By Bernard M. Patten
Her name is Oepida Maas. Her husband is Mucho Maas. Her lover was Pierce Inverarity who ran Yoyodyne Corporation in San Narciso. He psychiatrist is Dr. Hilarious. You get the idea - there are funny names in this story. Oepida is made the executor of Pierce's estate. Diligently, in this romance, satire, antidetective novel, she tries to find out the extent of her duties and the extent of the estate. Along the way, things go from simple to complex, ordered to disordered, concrete to abstract, just the opposite of the usual novel, and she becomes enmeshed in either a worldwide conspiracy called Trystero or enmeshed in her imagining of a worldwide conspiracy called Trystero, and organization, if it exists, dedicated to alternative culture and government derived from the Thurn and Taxis Postal system started in 1577 in Holland. Oepida's quest reminds me of the Faerie Queene charmed from her human virtues while searching for self-knowledge. Her sensitivity to external events and the hidden meanings in the nature of things (are they really there, those meanings?) reminds me of Emily's sensitivity to external things in The Mysteries of Udolpho. But her and Pynchon's language reminds me of nothing I have ever seen: It is an original blend of erudition, and slang with scintillations, multiple meanings, cross references, parody, outlandish puns, pawky black humor -- all of which is steadily and intelligently directed and reflects an extraordinary writing talent. The characters are everywhere plugged in elsewhere, so Oepida can't connect with anyone except perhaps her two lovers and then only tentatively: one leaves her for a teenager; the other kills himself. The plot is driven by concepts in physics including the second law of thermodynamics and Maxwell's demon as well as by the idea that information theory equations reduce to entropy equations. Indeed the theme is that the world's entropic decline is evidences by its capacity for bureaucracy, atomic war, and domestic violence, all of which can be prevented by an increase in meaningful human communications. I like that idea and I like the comic ribbings of California manners and pop culture gone to rock and ruin. This novel stands with The Great Gatsby in concise attempt to capture dangerous exaltations in the closed entropic system known to us as America and in so doing reasserts the wonder that can animate the novel.

Loved it, you also will
By Kindle Customer
Wonky beautiful post-modern ramblings and a captivating story that really gets your brain working. While I read this book I thought about it basically all the time. I read this after like 5 consecutive Philip Dick books. I'm going to read a few more before I try to tackle Gravity's Rainbow

A good book for intellectuals
By Ekbart van der Klunk
I loved this book. Thought it was funny, challenging, but not too hard. A great time capsule of the 60's. Book captures the optimistic openness of that period. Perhaps not understandable to people born later. Should not attempt to read other Pynchon books unless you read this one first to test the water.

Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Fiery action sweeps across thirtheen New United States as America's greatest indian warrior begins a new battle for freedom .... and for love. THE ENEMY -- A vibrant frontier nation has beaten back the mighty British Empire and let freedom ring throughout the land. But the bells of liberty may be silenced as the English form a secret alliance with bloodthirsty renegade tribes. Only Renno, proud inheritor of the fighting skills of the legendary White Indian, can unite the Five Nations of the Iroquois in America's noble cause. Yet even Renno cannot foresee an enemy so powerful, so insidious in his cruelty and lust, that all whom the great Senecan loves may be doomed to die. THE WEAPON -- Deadly with his tomahawk, English longbow, and razor-sharp stiletto, Renno still needs a gift from the sacred Manitous -- a spirit knife -- to do battle with a more-than-human foe. For now supernatural wolves and a black and evil soul must be vanquished on the trail that leads to the arms of a flame-haired woman and victory for the White Indian's country ... and his heart."

Cyrano de Bergerac (Bantam Classics reissue), by Edmond Rostand

This is Edmond Rostand's immortal play in which chivalry and wit, bravery and love are forever captured in the timeless spirit of romance. Set in Louis XIII's reign, it is the moving and exciting drama of one of the finest swordsmen in France, gallant soldier, brilliant wit, tragic poet-lover with the face of a clown. Rostand's extraordinary lyric powers gave birth to a universal hero--Cyrano De Bergerac--and ensured his own reputation as author of one of the best-loved plays in the literature of the stage. This translation, by the American poet Brian Hooker, is nearly as famous as the original play itself, and is generally considered to be one of the finest English verse translations ever written.

Review
Verse drama in five acts by Edmond Rostand, performed in 1897 and published the following year. Set in 17th-century Paris, the action revolves around the emotional problems of the noble, swashbuckling Cyrano, who, despite his many gifts, feels that no woman can ever love him because he has an enormous nose. Secretly in love with the lovely Roxane, Cyrano agrees to help his inarticulate rival, Christian, win her heart by allowing him to present Cyrano's love poems, speeches, and letters as his own work. Eventually Christian recognizes that Roxane loves him for Cyrano's qualities, not his own, and he asks Cyrano to confess his identity to Roxane; Christian then goes off to a battle that proves fatal. Cyrano remains silent about his own part in Roxane's courtship. As he is dying years later, he visits Roxane and recites one of the love letters. Roxane realizes that it is Cyrano she loves, and he dies content. Cyrano de Bergerac was based only nominally on the 17th-century nobleman of the same name, known for his bold adventures and large nose. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The greatest play of all time...
By Gary S
I've been around theater for quite a while, and I was lucky enough to be in this play twice, once as Cyrano. I've done Shakespeare, O'Neill, Chekhov...and I've never been in a play that comes close to this in terms of dramatic force.
The fashion in French theater at the time it was written was simple domestic drama: husbands and wives and their various conflicts. This play exploded on the scene and there was extremely strong public reaction. (I think there may even have been riots.)
For modern American audiences, I must confess, it's a pretty long haul. Even with some judicious cutting, it's tough to get the thing down close to three hours. But what a ride! Poetry, fight scenes, comedy, tears...it's just incredible.
In all the plays I've done, I've never done one that comes so close to, literally, the meaning of life. Why are we here? What makes human beings act the way they do? Why do people try things that are clearly impossible? It's all in there.
I knew someone in college who gave this paperback edition to everyone he knew as a gift, because it spoke so strongly to him.
Looking back on it now, I'm amazed that I was able to memorize all the text, because I'm convinced that this is the longest role in Western theater...longer than Hamlet, I think.
Hooker's translation has been called the greatest translation of poetry ever, and while I'm not a poetry student, I can agree. Squishing the 6-foot French lines into 5-foot English lines and still retaining the dramatic flow must have been a daunting task.
Anyway, it's the greatest play I have ever seen, read or performed.

Excellent Play, Mediocre Translation
By Matthew Asnip
Cyrano de Bergerac by Rostand is my favourite play. The French original is a gem in almost every respect. It is wonderfully well written in Alexandrine (a difficult form of verse). Rostand's romantic masterpiece shines not only as a play, but as poetry.

This particular translation (unattributed) is pedestrian. It is accurate, but tin-eared. It is not the Brian Hooker translation. I state that because I wound up buying it in the belief that it was the Hooker translation and was consequently much disappointed.

For any literary work originally written in another language (this, Don Quixote, All Quiet on the Western Front), it is important to pay attention to who is responsible for the translation. Some translators are awful. Some are mediocre (such as whoever did this one). And some are wonderful (Brian Hooker).

For those who are not as enamored of Brian Hooker's work as I am, the Anthony Burgess translation is also quite good.

Caveat Emptor.

Carol Clark's Cyrano lacks panache'
By Jason L.
I currently own four different translations of Cyrano de Bergerac with another two more on the way. I am truly surprised to see how many new translations are being turned out of this wonderful classic. By far, three of the greatest are Brian Hooker's, Anthony Burgess' and Lowell Blair's. But I wanted to see what was new in the world of Cyrano. Penguin Books is known for its quality and I have seldom been let down.

In this case, I felt let down and disappointed. Carol Clark's translation just doesn't seem to have the feel for the character of Cyrano that so many of us have come to know and love. Though she is one of the few who ends the play with the word "panache'," her translation has too many spots that just don't feel the "white plume of freedom" Cyrano spoke of in rebellion to the the elite who wore their beauty, grace and flair on the outside and those who sucked up to them. Also, Carol Clark takes liberty in changing meaning in certain key places that I particularly did not care for at all. Perhaps her only true innovation is the proper gender tense he uses with regard to his sword which he regards as a "she" as in the original French. She gets too many things wrong to be commended for translating a Cyrano that will endure. I believe it is a novelty.

Let me emphasize that this is not a "bad" rendering "per se"; I feel strongly that it is just not a good rendering. It's merely AVERAGE, mediocre but as Cyrano believed in striving to be the best in everything, perhaps Carol Clark should have taken a page out of his book? I don't believe it will be any more understandable or accessable to today's reader than older translations and the reader will be losing out on so much with this rendering. I feel strongly that the Clark translation plays fast and loose in certain key areas even though she may make up for it in others. Thus she receives an "okay" three stars but I was sorely tempted to give her two.

If you are looking for a brand-new translation and are willing to let go of preconceptions, Carol Clark's Cyrano may be for you. BUT if you are new to Cyrano de Bergerac and want a truer and more faithful version to Edmond Rostand's orginal play, character and the language, I would strongly recommend avoiding this one and purchasing one of the following: any edition by Brian Hooker (his translation was behind the 1950 Jose Ferrer Academy Award winning performance of Cyrana), Lowell Blair (I've become more fond of this one with each reading) or finding one of the Anthony Burgess editions (Gerard Depardieu's Cyrano movie's English sub-titles as well as countless plays have used this edition). These three are all 5 star translations. Christopher Fry's rhyming couplet Cyrano by Oxford is good (4 star) but not up to the standard of the three authors I have listed as alternatives to Clark.

In conclusion, I would say this: Will I read this play more than once? Perhaps, but only for comparison to the other better translations of Cyrano I have but never for enjoyment as I do with my other versions. A newcomer to Cyrano might enjoy this rendering and fall in love with the character but I personally don't see how; the translator has robbed Cyrano of much of his inner panache' and the other characters of their own unique qualities. I do not believe this translation has any staying power and will quickly be swept aside for the familiar and better translations that have been around longer, having already stood the test of time. For while the authors I have cited as alternatives may have different styles, they all tap into Cyrano's inner panache', his white plume of freedom, flair and independence whereas Clark's version seems to me to be just revision for revisionist sake without any vision or pathos or the wit that has set Cyrano apart since 1897.

From Publishers Weekly
Claiming that the death of the 42-year-old Elvis Presley in 1977 profoundly affected millions of lives, Moody (Life After Life explores the Elvis cult and reasons for fans' alleged premonitory dreams of his death and psychic experiences that followed it. Some of the dreams cited here concern an imaginary last concert of Elvis, at which he announced his death, or in which the dreamer saw him in his coffin. Fans tell of apparitionsamong those quoted are a clinical psychologist, a farmer, a truck driver, a policeman. Such experiences, suggests Moody, often reflect an unconscious emotional need or unresolved conflict and may have a religious impact on the dreamer. Numerous presumably sane Presley fans refuse to believe that he is dead, according to the author; they cite that his name is an anagram for LIVES.

elvis has never really left the building
By Janice L. Faust
I checked this book out of the library in 1993 after a trip to see a friend in Memphis Tn. I had always been an Elvis fan so of course I went to Graceland while I was in town. I began reading about Elvis after that trip. There are alot of biographies and tell all's out there and I have read a good many. I never forgot this book because it was so unusual. To realize that so many people believe that they have had an experience with Elvis after his death was fascinating. A few of the stories are silly but some are quite haunting. The book moved me in a way I had not expected. I returned the book to library, and that very night around 2:00 a.m. my phone rang and it was Elvis. Ok, it was a recording of Elvis singing Love Me Tender but in the middle of the night, after just having finished this book, it scared the daylights out of me. To this day I have never figured out who made that call. I will never forget it.

FASCINATING!
By A Customer
It is way too bad that Dr. Moody abandoned affiliation with this project. It is fascinating, enlightening, and entertaining. Dr. Moody's later research paved the way for LIFE AFTER DEATH studies, and he became a fine-print foot-note in that historic research. But it is with ELVIS where he began. For whatever bizarre reason, Dr. Moody decided to interview people who had "ELVIS AFTER-LIFE EXPERIENCES". As weird as this sounds, Dr. Moody serendipitiously unlocked a Holy Grail: These were real, normal, successful people he interviewed. People who REALLY believe they interacted with ELVIS after his death. One man picked ELVIS up as he hitch-hiked. A house-wife found his profile in the base of a shower! Another woman compared watermelons with him in a grocery store. A whole family sees his eyes follow them out of a picture! Get the point? It is easy to understand why Dr. Moody would abandon and disown this ridiculous tripe, however, he really did catch something! Presented straight-forward and fast, without judgement or psycho-babble, as a student of psychology I would sincerely recommend this work as a treatise in the bizarre! PS. Thank you Dr. Moody! I didn't think people like this really existed!

Stop laughing
By Laurel Jenkins-Crowe
I don't believe or disbelieve in an afterlife of any sort; I bought this book for a paper I wrote on the legend of the hitchhiking ghost of Elvis. Dr. Moody not only recorded the earliest version of this legend I could find, he also accounted for the "sighting" in a compassionate, psychologically rational way. His blend of the open-minded and the semi-skeptical is what makes the book interesting reading.

Elvis did and does mean a lot to many people. I lived in Memphis for 30 years, and I still can't say I "get it," but this book (and Strausbaugh's E: Reflections on the Birth of the Elvis Faith) have brought me a lot closer to an understanding of the Elvis phenomenon.
