They Turned A Boy Into A Manhunter...

Once, impressed by their tales of gunplay and thievery, young Shell Tucker had been eager to call them his friends. Then he saw the men in Bob Heseltine's gang from the other side, when they robbed his father of twenty thousand in hard-earned money. By the time Shell buried his pa, he knew what he had to do. Going after the gold, he rode to Colorado and a town called Los Angeles, California. But it wasn't until the outlaws shot him down and left him to die that Shell Tucker got mad enough to want to live--and wreak a kind of vengeance they'd never seen before.

THE LONG HARD TRAIL TO MANHOOD...

His father always said he hung with the wrong crowd. That he was a boy heading for trouble. Now with his father's leg broken and a horse carrying twenty grand run off by outlaws, Shell Tucker had something to prove. That money belonged not just to his family but to neighbors who trusted the Tuckers with all they had. Shell was determined to get the money back. But he would need help. He found it in a mysterious man named Con Judy. Con would show him there were more intelligent ways for a man to make his mark than gunfighting. But if it came to a gunplay, there were few better allies than Con Judy. Together they would track the thieves through cold, rain, ambush, and treachery. Shell had set out with his father little more than a boy. And he wasn't going to stop until he came back a man -- or dead.

Red Bicycle Zipping Through Scenes. Macbeth Bleeding Through Time. Wedding Bell Bliss
By Linda G. Shelnutt
This third offering in Hart's DEATH ON DEMAND series has fully received the advantage of repeated features building upon themselves and establishing immediate reader intimacy. I was anticipating (and not disappointed) the repetition of key elements, one of which was the first couple chapters (prior to the entrance of Annie and Agatha) being crisp, brief, chilling dips to the murderous "footprints" in the novel. I don't know if it was because I've come to expect this type of sly entry into Hart's Annie & Max series, or if it's because the author's style has leap-frogged itself, solidifying into better and better types of seasoning... but, the initiating chapters seemed to have zapped up a few levels in mood and intrigue, as chilling stage setters for Annie's warm and perky entrance, which seemed even warmer and perkier than the prior 2 books which were already at what seemed to be peaks of performance.

The anticipated Annie and Max personality mixes moved quickly into cozy entertainment, possibly due to the decrease of tension from earlier struggles toward (and away from) a serious relationship. Sometimes the fun fizzles after the fish is caught. But, in this case, I felt heightened entertainment from the interplay between these two formally engaged characters heading toward a marriage ceremony. It was warming to observe the couple's dance into win/win scenarios, their balancing of each others' foibles, though Max, from my perspective has few if any flaws. If God were to Himself descend to visit the planet, I'd imagine Him in the attitude of Max's easy going nature. The Max Gestalt would fit like a Divine Glove. He not only has confidence, class, and pizzazz; he has endearing vulnerabilities (and no guilt over being wealthy).

I relished Annie's growth into a periodic ability to relax with Max, as it began sinking in that she was no longer fighting their inevitable connection. The drive to "The Great Gatsby Party" at the Petree's was sheer reader luxury, settling into savoring the environmental elegance of Broward's Rock, through Annie's eyes. (Beauty doesn't descend well into the atmosphere of a pushy/shovey cranky mood, though that mood has it's own appeal.) I wondered if, prior to allowing Max into her life as he was destined, as her everything partner, Annie ever fully allowed herself to wallow in the silent beauty of a sunset before it had set, to register a pleasant summer breeze studded with Jasmine and Gardenia, to study puffy clouds drifting in a pale blue sky. Max was so good at loosening Annie's uptight laces, it was easy to miss some of the nuances of his technique.

On the other hand, I enjoyed Annie's ability to easily, even gracefully, sidestep Max's head-for-the-bedroom overtures, and "get to the party on time." I loved the way Annie avoided taking the typical romantic road-fork of not showing up at the party, due to diving onto the mattress, and heating up the sheets. Both Annie and Max relished her gentle (uncommonly) nudge out of the house and into the glorious evening of a gorgeously staged world settled cozily into a rangy resort island.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as the case may be taken, the party didn't end in divine delight. Hey. This is a mystery, right? Gotta have the "bloody" scene... this time with a false taint slurred at Annie, which made me want to spit fire for her.

The subplot/plot weaving provided more style contrast and mood swing in this third DOD novel:

- We had the dreaded (but humorous) phone calls from Max's mother, Laurel, with attempts to design Annie & Max's wedding into an International, New Age carnival.

- We had the additions of name, title, and plot dropping of Annie's well stocked mystery repertoire, which will be even more interesting to me as I continue reading mysteries and reread this series (at the moment I recognize about 3% of them, yet I continue to appreciate the opportunity to expand my mystery vocab).

- We had the clue conversations over coffee or meals at DOD and Annie or Max's homes.

- We had the more active scenes of getting out there and gathering clues, at risk.

- And we had the ongoing ambiance around rehearsals of the play (Arsenic and Old Lace, which came across very well even to a reader like me, who hasn't read it yet).

Then, of course we had the delight of Henny's shenanigans of acting out various characters in various mysteries, via phone calls, zips through town on her flashy red bicycle, and personal drop-ins to visit Annie at Death on Demand. Through all this, Henny's character was surged (almost to nova) into a zany superwoman. By the end of the book, Henny had turbo-charged out of the muck of being basically an unlikeable but intriguing dud (in the first two books Henny entertained the plot as an irritant adding a bit of spice at her own expense).

Yup. As listed above, this third offering in the DOD series has definitely kicked up a few notches (speaking of which, note the lawyer hilariously toting cliches in his wake) in various types of "zap," mood/scene contrast, action, and intrigue.

The whole shebang heated up nicely as Annie began the chicken-sans-head rush, spinning wheels around Broward Rock in multiple mad dashes to save Max from the evidence frame-up and from the railroading attempt by the dark-cartoon-buffoon, horrifying imitation of Perry Mason (circuit solicitor Brice Willard Posey) attempting to wrap bars around Max's freedom. In this heated spinning, Annie sloughed off Laurel's phone calls, allowing the wedding ceremony's pre-planning acrobatics to get out of hand by way of Laurel's heavenly convolutions (which were Annie's unadulterated nightmares).

Then we also had the sad surprise of the species of the first murder victim, whereas the second corpse was no surprise, and the third murder was ...

The final scene, apres the culprit discovery and apprehension, was truly a bang of a bash, reminding me of Annie's thought about midway into the book, during a pleasant part of a rehearsal scene, about how great she felt being part of "something good." Of course I flashed on the contrast parallel to the title of this mystery, and was reminded of Laurel's off-base comment that Love on Demand would be a better name for Annie's bookstore.

There's LOTS going on in this novel, but it all plays together perfectly through the ongoing reading, and ties together lusciously in the ending chapters. Cheers & stamping feet. Yes!

Definitely a book to buy and read, more than once.

Theater Production
By Nash Black
Annie and Max's wedding plans are moving forward with the help of Max's mother, Laural. But the footlights beckon as Max takes the roll of Mortimer Brewster in the classic ARSENCI AND OLD LACE.
Rehearsals are rough as actors refuse to learn the lines, torn curtains, and when Max is scheduled to find a body in the window seat -- the corpse's place has been taken by a dead cat. Someone is out to sabotage the production.
SOMETHING WICKED by Carolyn G. Hart brings all the favorite character to center stage and provides an interesting backdrop of some of the most famous authors, titles, and characters in the mystery genre.
A great cozy for a midnight read.

another fine mystery from Carolyn G. Hart
By A Customer
This is the third book in the Death on Demand series. The later books in the series are stronger but I read this one to find out about the development of the continuing characters - Max, Annie, and Henny. I've now read all of Carolyn Hart's Death on Demand series except for the Mint Julep Murder. I love the setting, an island off the coast of Georgia, and the characters and the constant literary allusions to famous mysteries. I never figure out the mysteries the paintings are based on. Like the Miss Marple books, I wonder what the murder rate is on Broward's Island? Awfully high

A Good Book on Healing Body Systems a la Cayce
By Carol Chapman
This is a good book. I like that it not only describes Edgar Cayce's trance suggestions and philosophy of healing but that it is written by Dr. William McGarey who used to be one of the founding doctors of the medical clinic in Phoenix, Arizona that used the Cayce readings when appropriate to cure many illnesses, even those considered incurable.

However, because of the title of the book, I expected it to be a listing of various Cayce remedies such as herbs, lotions, foods. Instead, it lists remedies to undertake for various types of ailments. It's written in three parts. The first describes the functioning of the human body. The second sections lists various types of healing regimens suggested in the Cayce readings such as castor oil packs, prayer and meditation, and consulting dreams plus more conventional types of healing regimens such as diet and nutrition, exercise, manipulation, and massage. The third section is the best because it lists various body systems such as the digestive organs, the skin, and the heart and vascular system, and describes how to get that system healthy and keep it healthy.

I find it very helpful to get a sense of how the body works from Cayce's very holistic perspective. However, I would have preferred that when Cayce readings are mentioned, that they be quoted and the numbers of the readings listed as they are in The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy.

If you are interested in listings of various healing regimens, there's Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Healing (Edgar Cayce) that lists various ailments and their cures and An Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Foods for Health and Healing, which lists foods and food combinations suggested to heal various physical incoordinations, plus Edgar Cayce on Healing Foods for Body, Mind, and Soul, another books on the foods and food combinations recommended in the Cayce readings.

A good book but I'd choose The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy first because it is a "how to" of the Cayce remedies and it quotes the readings directly including their reading numbers.

The Edgar Cayce Remedies
By Mark E. Riggleman
Edgar Cayce was, and still is, a force of nature. Not being old enough to remember the man myself, I have found a lot of the information in the book was in common usage in the days of my grandparents. Perhaps his influence at that time was more widespread than I ever knew and now, with the modern medical machinery in place, his knowledge is resurfacing out of need. I found the book fascinating, educational, common-sensical, and opportunistic in it's availability to me when I needed to investigate other avenues of medicine. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who believe that a little TLC, some positive affirmations, and a more nature-driven potency can, and will, cure or alleviate ailments on more than one level.

... 18 where it mentions God abhors so many psychic like things, so not to sound too boring
By Hoolihan
If yer into psychics then he would be outstanding but I tend to go with Deuteronomy 18 where it mentions God abhors so many psychic like things, so not to sound too boring, the book is ok and I have a tendency to believe he had a profound impact on many humans, but it is just not my thing.
The Castor Oil packs for various illnesses, is definitely proven to be outstanding for healing and that part of the book is exellent for sure.

ROBIN BUSS's TRANSLATION from PENGUIN CLASSICS
By J. Cooper
This review is for those who've already decided they want to read The Count of Monte Cristo (you won't regret it!), and don't know which version to get.

Short answer: see review title, duh!

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book, and I've read several translations, both abridged and unabridged.

TRANSLATION
The Buss translation is the most modern, and reads most fluidly. A quick example comparing this translation with the one found on Project Gutenberg:

PG - His wife visited for him, and this was the received thing in the world, where the weighty and multifarious occupations of the magistrate were accepted as an excuse for what was really only calculated pride...

BUSS - His wife visited on his behalf; this was accepted in society, where it was attributed to the amount and gravity of the lawyer's business -- when it was, in reality, deliberate arrogance...

Buss's work reads like the book was written in English. The two or so times that the work is nearly untranslatable, Buss makes a footnote about it (eg, an insinuated insult using the formal "vous" instead of the familiar "tu"). Other translations just skip the subtlety. The most common translation out there (uncredited in my version) reads like a swamp. Trust me, get Buss.

ABRIDGED V UNABRIDGED
Abridged versions of this book rarely say "abridged." You can tell by the size: abridged is 500-700 pages, unabridged is 1200-1400 pages. Go for the unabridged.

The abridged version is VERY confusing! Pruning 1200 pages down to 600 leaves a lot of plot on the cutting room floor. Suddenly, arriving at dinner are 4 new characters; it's very tiring to try to keep up with the hole-ridden story of the abridged versions. And you know where the holes are? Publishers "clean up" the book by omitting the affairs, illegitimate children, homosexuality, hashish trips, etc.

As an added bonus in the Penguin Classics edition, there's a wonderful appendix bursting with footnotes to explain all the 19th century references, and a quick guide to the rise and fall of Napoleon (crucial to the politics in the story).

Hope this helps. Get the book and start reading!

Absolutely the best book ever
By Book lover
This book is an example of perfect fiction writing. Its length is 5 times the average book and it still was not long enough! The story, the characters, the settings and the emotions enthralled me for days. I could not put it down. I was living the book as it took me to France, the mediterranean, Italy and every home, cave and mode of transportation detailed in exemplary fashion by Dumas. Without giving away the intrigue... This book is the story of a wronged young sailor and follows his life as he is imprisoned due to the actions of 3 jealous men. He lives in prison for an extended period of time, meeting a man who gives him hope and a life beyond his dreams. He escapes the horrid dungeon and seeks revenge on the 3 men who took away everything he ever hoped for. This book is amazing, it will not disappoint anyone. I cannot believe I did not read it before. Thank you Kindle for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book for free, however, it is worth paying for and sharing with anyone who loves to read.

♥ This book is so wonderful!! ♥
By Melissa Martin's Reading List Blog
ALL THE FREAKING FEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never in a million years would have thought I would love this book! I never thought I would like something like this book. I never thought I would fall in love with Dantes! I never thought I would have so much anger, sadness, despair and happiness in this book! I never thought, did I!

*********SOME SPOILERS**********

Edmond Dantes was a wonderful man of 19-years-old. He had a woman he loved and was going to marry named Mercedes. A loving father. And he was going to be captain of the wonderful ship, Pharaon.

The the jealous b*stards or just b*stards in general ruined life for Dantes.

1. Danglars
2. Fernand
3. Villefort

I hate these men with such a passion I just wanted someone to kill their evil selves.

All of the jerks had a hand in putting Dantes in prison for 14 effing years! Yeah! For what? For NOTHING!

Dantes was in such despair he was going to starve himself to death. I can't even!

Then one night Dantes hears a scratching sound and soon realizes someone is tunneling. Dantes decides to tunnel as well. At some point the two of them tunnel to each other. Dantes gets to meet Abbe Faria, the mad man (so they say) in the cell next door. Abbe Faria thinks he's tunneling out to freedom but he made a miscalculation. But Dantes and Abbe devise a new plan and this takes some years to do all of this tunneling. But the Abbe is old and sick and having seizures. He's not going to be able to make it so Dantes waits with him. He is like another father figure to Dantes. And who in the hell but Dantes would wait and not leave his friend. Because Dantes is good and kind and loving.

Abbe Faria is also the one that opens Dantes eyes to who the culprits were that put him in jail. Poor Dantes couldn't see this at the time and he couldn't read what we were reading so he had no clue. Abbe Faria also tells Dantes about tons of gold and jewels that he has hidden on the island of Monte Cristo. He makes Dantes remember everything about getting there and where to find the treasure.

Unfortunately, Abbe Faria dies and it was so sad. Dantes was so grief stricken over his friend. Dantes decided to leave then as he had nothing else to stay for and he put himself in Abbe Faria's place all wrapped up waiting to be buried. Well, he doesn't actually get buried but thrown out to sea and luckily Dantes managed to save himself.

We go on to read of the tale of how Dantes get to Monte Cristo and soon he is beyond rich and he is so smart and reading to get IT DONE!

And Dantes doesn't just run off and kill people. He's smart. He tears down their houses, their world without them knowing who he is until the bitter end. And all of the riches they acquired while he rotted in jail was disgusting. Anyway, some people did die but that's of little importance.

Dantes is also kind to all of the people that were kind to him or tried to help him while he was in jail. He's such a wonderful person. Yes, I know I keep saying that. He helps Morrel and his family when they were about to lose everything. They even lost the Pharaon but Dantes brings him a new one without Morrel even knowing where the ship came from. Dantes gave them money. He helped the family even after Morrel was gone. I cried and cried at his generosity.

And to sit and read of all the plans and all of the people crumble.

The only person to recognize Dantes, even with his disguises, was Mercedes. But she went and married freaking Fernand and had a kid. Dantes was friends with Mercedes son but things could never be good for them again. And it's so, so sad for so many involved.

Oh, and Dantes called himself "Sinbad the Sailor" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." Of course I guess if you own a rock and gold and jewels and many other things, you can call yourself anything you want! :-)

I can't sit here and go on and on about the book. It's freaking 1276 pages! I'm not that good of a reviewer to tell you something good about that many pages. Just know. . . THIS BOOK is freaking AWESOME! If you have been debating on reading it and afraid of it's size, who cares, just read it. I mean you can take two months or however long to enjoy Dantes and his adventures, but don't let the "tome" bother you. It's not boring at all! NOT ONE BIT!

I give it all the stars!

Sail on dear, Dantes! ♥

Ten Plays by Euripides, by Euripides

The first playwright of democracy, Euripides wrote with enduring insight and biting satire about social and political problems of Athenian life.  In contrast to his contemporaries, he brought an exciting--and, to the Greeks, a stunning--realism to the "pure and noble form" of tragedy.  For the first time in history, heroes and heroines on the stage were not idealized:  as Sophocles himself said, Euripides shows people not as they ought to be, but as they actually are.

About the Author
Little is known of the life of Euripides. He was born about 485 B.C. on the island of Salamis and may have begun a career as a painter before writing in the drama competitions in 455 B.C. During his lifetime his plays were often produced, but he won the Athenian drama prize only four times. He died in 406 B.C.

Euripides was a prolific writer, the author of some eighty-eight or more plays, of which nineteen have survived under his name. He was criticized by the conservatives of his time for introducing shabby heroes and immoral women into his plays, a practice that they considered degrading to the noble form of tragedy. However, audiences to whom his predecessors were cold and remote found Euripides direct and appealing.

Euripides became immensely popular after he died and his influence altered drama forever. Considered by George Bernard Shaw to be the greatest of the Greek dramatists, Euripides is now regarded by many as the originator of the dramatic sensibility that developed into what we call "modern" European drama.

An Ancient Greek Look at Human Nature
By Frank T. Klus
The ten plays Paul Roche translated consisted of some of Euripides' finest plays and some of the lesser known plays. I particularly liked Alcestis and Hippolytus and cared less for the last three plays in the book. The one thing that struck me about Euripides is the inconsistency of some of his characters from the way Homer or Sophocles depicted them and his own depiction. Furthermore, in the case of Iphegenia in Aulis and Iphegenia Among the Taurians the character of Iphegenia changes from a heroic figure in Aulis to a bitter one in Taurus. Even the details between the two stories differed. True, they were written in different times but an author ought to keep track of the details of each play. I also felt Roche should have pointed these things out in the introduction to the plays but he did not.
Euripides was criticized in his own time while being praised more in modern times for his desire to make his characters conform to the way people behave in real life. Most of Euripides' characters were often flawed such as Iphegenia and Admetus in the play, Alcestes. They were portrayed as basically good people that had a dark side to them. Iphegenia, who came to accept her fate (she was to be sacrificed by her father, Agamemnon, to Artemis in return for a fair wind to Troy) was whisked away by the god to Tauras. In the sequel to the play she became a bitter priestess who sacrificed all Greeks that wandered into the country.
Admetus was a man who treated Apollo well when Zeus punished him by making him serve Admetus. Apollo rewarded him by allowing him to live if he could find someone to die in his place. He asked his parents but they refused; only his wife agreed. When she died he mourned her death and truly loved her but he would not allow his parents to mourn because they betrayed him. His father countered by saying that each must take responsibility for their own lives. A good point that Admetus never understood.
I believe Euripides challenged his audience to ask themselves what they would do if confronted with similar circumstances. How would one react if you knew you could live if someone else died in your place (the subject of an old Twilight Zone episode, by the way)? In the case of Media (the wife of Jason-who got the Golden Fleece from Media's father) what would you do if you gave up your country and everyone you knew to marry a man and then ten years later you're thrown out of your home? What would you do if you were Phaedra (wife of Theseus in the play Hippolytus) and a god put a spell on you to make you fall in love with your stepson? These are the challenges that Euripides makes to his audience. He does so in an engaging manner with good interaction between the characters. The Chorus plays less of a role than it does with Aescylus or even Sophocles but as a modern reader of these ancient play I find Euripides great entertainment.

Best translation I've read!
By K Priest
I'm an acting teacher, and this is the best translation I've come across. It's very readable and actable. Most other translations take a formal equivalency approach but this one is more dynamic equivalency. For an acting student, the text is immediate and realistic rather than awkward.

Too much Roche - not enough Euripides
By Kelli M. Mcbride
Roche's translations of Euripides' tragedies are intrusive. He adds stage directions and characterizations that influence how the reader views the people in the plays. Readers may believe that these stage directions are from Euripides, but most of them are not. I find it irksome having to differentiate between Roche's interpretation of character and Euripides' text.
