Jazz music segues well between scenes, though without any additional production sound beyond voices, it can at times feel out of place. While the full cast proves enjoyable in their individual parts, many take turns narrating the exposition throughout the production. At times, this is executed well, but sometimes it feels as if the director is just trying to give everyone more voice time. (Sept.)

Lewis is like Tolstoy win that his novel is a morality tale

Sinclair Lewis does an outstanding job tracking a man's mid-life crisis and its effect on him and his family--probably 40 year before the the phrase "mid-life crisis" was invented. Lewis is like Tolstoy win that his novel is a morality tale, in which the author has clear views of what makes, and breaks, human happiness. Even though I say it is predictable, it is well written and the plot is believable. He brings all of the major characters to life, and you understand their motivations, the reasons for their failings, and why they did or did not redeem themselves. Not the greatest novel ever written, just a good story with well developed characters and a great plot. It is definitely a worth read.

Great Classic

Sinclair Lewis has to be one of the "great" writers of all time. In Babbitt he describes an era using fictional characters to represent the times in which many changes were taking place in the social environment of our country. America was coming out of the rural age and into the age of technical development, and characters reflected the effects of these changes in Lewis' novel. Great reading, and an opportunity to reflect on an important stage in America's development.

I tried to read Babbitt several years ago and stopped because I thought that the satire was too cruel. I was mistaken. Sinclair Lewis created a wonderful character in George Babbitt, a minor business figure in the minor metropolis of Zenith. Babbitt has a wife and two children and a house with all the modern conveniences: "In fact there was but one thing wrong with the Babbitt house: it was not a home." Babbitt's dissatisfactions lead him to behave foolishly; eventually he recovers himself and finds that his perspective has been enlarged. During Babbitt's odyssey, Lewis finds opportunities to ridicule civic boosterism and corruption and he pokes gentle fun at his protagonist.

Great intro to Zen--in real life as well as martial arts

First I'd like to address a couple of criticisms that I read here that this book is rather superficial and doesn't get into Zen concepts in depth. That's true, this book is really only an intro to Zen--if you're already knowledgeable then this book will probably be too basic. However, for the beginner there is no better place to start, and as someone else here observed, the quotes from Bruce Lee are almost worth the price of the book by themselves.
Joe Hyams started his karate training back in 1952 with Ed Parker--a full ten years or more before the craze got started in America. He had the opportunity to train with such greats as Bruce Lee, Bong Soo Han, Ed Parker, and Jim Lau from the very beginning. Joe encountered many trials and tribulations, frustrations, and disappointments during his training, but he never gave up. One reason is he often had the opportunity to discuss his problems with the many great teachers he trained under, and they often offered their wisdom and insights to help him through the difficult times. He took that wealth of personal experience and knowledge and put it all into this little book.
Hyams gives a very clear, concise, and easy to understand introduction to Zen in the martial arts. The discussions are often illustrated and liberally peppered with fun anecdotes from his personal experiences with different masters, making this almost a personal journey through the dojos and minds of some of the most famous martial artists of our time. Hyams writes very well (he was a famous Hollywood screenwriter) and so rather than another dry, obscure, Zen philosophy tome, the book sounds more like an intimate conversation with a friend over a glass of wine and dinner. It sounds like he's personally talking right to you.
Hyams touches on so many concepts that I won't try to discuss them much here. But I will mention probably the most important one--which is persistence. Hyams points out that it often isn't the most talented and gifted student that achieves the most in the martial arts--since they often quit the first time they encounter a serious difficulty--since they're so used to everything coming so easy. Rather, it's the person who often has very little going for him physically, and has the patience and perseverance to stick it through to the end.
I'll mention just one other important principle. This relates to the Zen idea of living in the moment, especially when training, but also in everything else one does in life. Don't allow other concerns, however pressing or important, to weigh on your mind and distract you when you're training. Concentrate on living in the present moment and you'll make the most of your training--and of all the other activities in your life. Someone who's always worried about their other concerns can't truly live in the present, and therefore will never truly enjoy or make the most of whatever activity they're engaged in. Part of their mind is always somewhere else. Strive to always live in the now, in the present moment.
Interestingly enough, this idea has been confirmed by modern psychological research. If you have concerns that worry you, don't allow them to bother you to the point where you're thinking about them all the time. The best way to deal with this, it's been found, is to set aside some time each day--they recommend 10, 15, or 20 minutes at most--where, if you need to--go ahead and worry yourself sick about it. Then put it out of your mind and enjoy the rest of your day. Another important thing you can do during this time is to not just worry about everything but to put some constructive thought into how to better deal with your problems. Sometimes you won't have a good idea about how to do that for a while, for days, maybe weeks, but don't let that get you down. Remember the other principle of persistence I mentioned earlier. Stick it through to the end.
Realistically, life is never as bad as it seems to us during our darkest and most depressed moments--nor as wonderful as it seems during our happiest, most ecstatic moments. It's somewhere in between. The point here is that one should also cultivate the proper attitude--since that's often the only thing one has total control over in one's life. If you're the sort of person for whom even little things get you down--which is more of us than we would like to admit--then strive to be more objective. The little things can't really hurt you. They're just annoying psychologically because they bruise our egos a little bit. Save your emotional energy for the really big problems in your life, instead--because there will be more than enough of those. Cultivate a positive, upbeat attitude so that the little things are practically beneath your notice. Let them slide off you like water off a duck's back. This is also another important Zen principle--that too much ego impedes our progress in the martial arts--and our path through life as well.
Well, I've gone on longer than I intended, but this book is so chock full of useful little tidbits of advice that I got a little carried away. So I'll just conclude by reiterating that Hyams has written a great little introduction to Zen concepts as applied to the martial arts. But perhaps even more important is that they can be applied beneficially to every other area of your life.

"Zen in The Martial Arts" is Zen you can Ken [begin to understand]. Some folks may reckon that Zen should be very murky and mysterious and not really to be put into words. The word Zen, itself, is a short version of Zenna [Old Japan], matching Ch'anna [Old China] -- a translation of Dhyana [Old India]. This comes very close to "focusing" in English -- if we choose all the meanings of that word -- concentration, magnifying, centering, attention, intensity and so on. This seems to be both a main lesson [cause] and main virtue [effect] of mortal human living. One main Zen-following focuses on navel-breathing in Zazen -- "sitting" Zen. Another main Zen-following focuses on paradox-mystery poetry and prose -- which is said to be hard to "crack" via any just regular mind-set -- but after long intense focusing on the chosen target-words, the paradox-mystery [may] be "cracked". Many Zen-followers mix these methods. Yet, other Zen-followers "focus" via Fine Arts, including Martial Arts. I knew an older fellow from Japan who was a Zen Monk and also an Aikido Mentor. So, it is seen that, indeed, "focusing" is what Zen "focuses" on. As far as books go, "Zen in The Martial Arts" does go far -- in a way that can be focused-on by many folks. Sixteen year old Cassie Winslow feels alone and unwanted after her mother dies in an automobile accident.

Her parents were divorced and her father remarried. Her father has Cassie come to live with him and his family in Cape Cod. When she arrives, she makes friends with her neighbor, Eric Cavanaugh who is the same age. However, most of the other students at the high school take the lead from Eric's old girlfriend, Lisa Chambers. As bullies, they shut her out and make hurtful comments about her so that Cassie doesn't know how she will fit in.

Cassie is drawn to the one person in town who is also alone, the eccentric, Miranda. Miranda is considered odd and lives by herself in a home in the Marsh.

When Cassie comes to Miranda's home and they talk, Miranda tells her that now, Cassie is hers and that she, Miranda, won't let anyone harm her. Besides being eccentric, Miranda has the power to communicate and control a cat and an albino hawk that live at her home.

At her father's home, Cassie feels like an intruder and eventually comes to think of Miranda's house as her real home.

As the days go by, Cassie and Eric bond together. Eric is also a friend of Miranda and when Eric is also mistreated by other students and his baseball coach, we observe strange, supernatural things happen to them. Is it witchcraft? Is it just a coincidence?

John Saul does a standout job at keeping the reader guessing while at the same time providing a high level of suspense. The pacing is also well done with moments of high suspense followed by calmness, thus making the next moment of fear more intense. Toward the conclusion, the action is propelled faster and faster as possible supernatural forces follow Eric and Cassie.

The author also provides some twists and surprises. I enjoyed the novel but felt that some of the action was predictable. Nevertheless, I felt entertained.

Another Good John Saul Book

For some reason, I always get this book mixed up with "Second Child," probably because of the similar plot lines--a young woman is orphaned and then taken in by her distant family in New England. Plus it's been several years since I've read this book (sometime during my high school or middle school years), which adds to the confusion.
Anyway, the similarities between the two books are fairly obvious, in that the protagonist, 15-year-old Cassandra "Cassie" Winslow, loses her mother in a car crash in California and is consequently sent to live with her estranged father and his new family in False Harbor, Massachusetts, a setting that gives "The Unwanted" its somewhat Puritan/witch trial charm. It's here that a triangle of psychic power is reawakened between Cassie, Eric Cavanaugh (her 16-year-old neighbor), and Miranda Sikes (the local bag lady/witch who's been haunting her dreams lately). Soon Cassie becomes aware of powers she never knew she had--powers that are dangerous enough to kill. ("Carrie," anyone?)
"The Unwanted" is certainly a must-read if you're a Saul fan and/or enjoy supernatural horror. This is one of many good books by him.

THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THIS POPULAR DIET

Nathan Pritikin (1915-1985; he committed suicide after a long fight with leukemia, which had been in remission for 27 years) was an American nutritionist (though without professional training) who established the Pritikin Longevity Center (now the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa) in 1976 and served as its director. He wrote other books such as The Pritikin Promise.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1979 book, "This is not an easy diet. It requires a reversal of life-long bad habits and nutritional fallacies." (Pg. xxii) He adds, "The Pritikin Diet is not easy to begin because its menus are so different from what you're used to. Once you've tried it and understand it, however, the chances are high that you will stick with it... This is not a faddist diet. It is a most basic regimen that revives the types of food available when our physiology evolved to its present complexity." (Pg. 4)

He states, "On the Pritikin Diet, it generally isn't necessary to estimate the number of calories one should have. Since carbohydrates are low-calorie foods... you can eat more of them and not gain weight. Indeed, many people on this diet find gaining weight very difficult." (Pg. 29) He adds, "I probably surprised you by stating that carbohydrates are the best foods you can eat. But... this does not apply to all kinds of carbohydrates. Starch-rich natural foods ... are good for you. Simple, refined carbohydrates like sugar are not." (Pg. 34) He says, "Coffee and tea are not permitted on the Pritikin Diet." (Pg. 53)

He suggests, "The trouble with high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets is that they are too high in fat... fats produce part of their residue in ketones. True, ketones tend to decrease appetite. But ketones are also dangerous... The ultimate danger of excessive ketones is ketoacidosis, which can be fatal. Therefore, diets such as the Atkins and Stillman diets are risky." (Pg. 120-121)

First started this program in 1980. Used to have a binder of recipes, now lost. Purchased this book to review program and start a new binder. "Mock" Sour Cream is great for potatoes, dip and light cooking.

But the portrayal of camp as a place where high-spirited pranks and anxieties exist side-by-side rings true, and the girls' romantic schemes will appeal to preadolescent readers in the same way that the intrigues of their counselors are of endless fascination to campers themselves. Let me start off by saying thatI have read this book at least 13 times and it never lost its flavor.
The book as a whole was, and still is, the best book I have ever read. It is deep, passonite and caring; witty and informative.
Now I will review each of the main characters in turn.
Marissa is a kind nature lover. I can really relate to her.
Vi appears ditzy, stuck up, and fluffy at first, but as the book goes on you see that she is really quite deep.
Cathy seems nice and caring at first, but you get to see her true colors later, mean, hateful, and insensitive.
Sin looks like a Ken doll. He appears perfect, but as he makes mistakes (like falling in love with Cathy) you see that he is just another human being.
Jamie is hardworking, honest, and most of all muscular. He is trustworthy. Jamie strives to be a woodsman.
Dark (Heath) is just an innocent boy who has fallen into trouble. I perfer his mysterious, dark side and sexy smile to Heath, boy in pain.
Charles is insensitive to others feelings, and most of all, he's annoying.
Alica is a sensible person and has a typical nurse personality. Her biggest mistake- loving Charles.
Claudia is my personal favorite. She is innocent and charming. She handles her parents divorce in a hunorous way but inside, she is really hurting.
This book is very well written, and I would reccomend it to others

One of the greatest books in the whole world!

I also want to say that I absolutely loved this book! After I read it for the first time, I had to read it again, and I wish I have the book. It was really, really funny, and everything about it was superb! I'd say the most important charachters were Marissa, Vi, Dark/Heath, Alicia, Cathy, Charlie, Claudia and Jamie. And I would really like to have the sequel, 'Camp Reunion', because since I have already fallen in love with 'Camp Girl Meets Boy', I'm sure that I'll also love 'Camp Reunion'.

I love this book! You really get to know the characters, like they are people you actually know. I think thats why I liked it so much. Don't be hesitant about reading this book. It's funny, spirited, clever, deep and more. Once I read this book... I HAD to find out what happened so I read camp reunion.. a very good book too! I wish I had this book, I've ben searching far and wide...

Ciardi's is the best available English-language translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. The Paradiso far surpasses the literary quality of the two previous canti, which is a great achievement. Everyone who is interested in Italian literature, great literature, and/or Christian culture MUST read this book!

I truly enjoy reading the classics. However some classics must be translated. Some translations loose meaning since you can not translate word for word. Only the meanings can be translated and with the evolving English language sometimes words can have skewed definitions. John Ciardi is the best Dante translator I have read. Signet has done a good job at this price point. The Devine comedy is a book set that will expand your understanding on many uncannonized ideas. The Inferno (Signet Classics)The Paradiso (Signet Classics)The Purgatorio (Signet Classics)

The Closing Of The Trilogy

As with the other two books of the Divine Comedy, Paradiso could be a stand alone work of literature in its own right. The Grande Finale of Dante's massive poem ends with a flourish and upholds the tradition of masterful writing set forth by Inferno and Purgatorio.

This book should only truly be read upon completing Inferno and Purgatorio as many of the asides and relationships were first developed there. Allen Mandelbaum does a wonderful job of translating the poem but of also providing the reader with numerous notes and explanations on certain phrases or objects within the Cantos. This version is by far the easiest and most complete and can be enjoyed by both the casual and experienced reader.

Honest and humble memoir

It was interesting to read this account of Audie Murphy's travails in World War II (Murphy was one of the most highly decorated soldiers of that war) having read Ambrose's eulogy Band of Brothers .
Murphy received (every major medal, some more than once, that the army has to offer). He joined the army at age 17 to support six siblings after his mother died (his father had left the family earlier), and he doesn't talk about how the war haunted the rest of his life.
He portrays a brutal, harsh struggle to survive, where the only thing that matters is keeping oneself and one's friends alive. There are moments of great poignancy, others of humor. Once, hungry, dirty and wet, mired in their foxholes, they notice they are under a tree with ripe cherries. Not daring to stick a head up, let alone climb out of the foxhole, Murphy's buddy gets the idea of shooting down the branches with his machine gun, and soon they are delighted to have cherry branches falling on them, making the day just a little brighter.
Not once does Murphy mention his numerous awards, Clearly, Murphy believed that luck played as much a part in his survival as anything he did. He was however, the kind of person who tried to control his destiny, doing what was necessary and taking the initiative in order to get through the day. A little piece of Murphy died every time a friend was killed, and soon almost all of his friends were gone. He was delighted if they received a wound that would return them to the rear, away from battle. He sympathized and worried for the lieutenant who had been badly injured and returned voluntarily to the front only to lose his nerve under the intense shelling. It must have been horribly traumatic to develop such close bonds and to have them ripped apart.
At the risk of sounding a little chauvinistic, I quote from the last lines of his book:
" When I was a child, I was told that men were branded by war. Has the brand been put on me? Have the years of blood and ruin stripped me of all decency? Of all belief? Not of all belief. I believe in the force of a hand grenade, the power of artillery, the accuracy of a Garand. I believe in hitting before you get hit, and that dead men do not look noble.
"But I also believe in men like Brandon and Novak and Swope and Kerrigan; and all the men who stood up against the enemy, taking their beatings without whimper and their triumphs without boasting. The men who went and would go again to hell and back to preserve what our country thinks right and decent.
"My country. America! That is it. We have been so intent on death that we have forgotten life. And now suddenly life faces us. I swear to myself that I will measure up to it. I may be branded by war, but I will not be defeated by it.
"Gradually it becomes clear. I will go back. I will find the kind of girl of whom I once dreamed. I will learn to look at life through uncynical eyes, to have faith, to know love. I will learn to work in peace as in war. And finally - finally, like countless others, I will learn to live again."

A Must Read - Audie Murphy's "To Hell and Back"

I read this book for the first time as a Sophomore in high school and am compelled to rank it as one of the top five books I've ever picked up (Sakai's "Samurai!" and Galland's "The First and the Last" being the only others that I'd dare compare to it).
Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II, was awarded every medal for valor his country could give (The Congressional Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, The Bronze Star Medal, The Bronze Star Medal with a Bronze Service Arrowhead, the Legion of Merit, two Silver Stars, the Purple Heart...the list goes on and on), yet he tells his story in such an unassuming manner that it is hard to believe it is written by a war hero. Audie seems more content to discuss his friends and their impact on the war and on his life than to talk about himself. In his eyes, they are the heroes, and his book does a fine job of paying homage to the footsoldier of World War II.
His book is also a marvelously frank and vivid account of combat through the eyes an "everyman." A poor farm boy from Texas, Murphy is perhaps in many ways the typical hero: one who, when faced with a challenge, rises to a level beyond that which could reasonably be expected under different circumstances. Despite being rejected by the Marines and the Navy for military service ("You're too small, kid"), Audie refused to give up his quest to serve his country. Faced with the horror of war (and the deaths of close comrades), Murphy continuously and relentlessly rose to meet the challenges presented him when those of lesser mettle would surely have cowered. All the more remarkable is that Audie accomplished all this before the age of twenty!
No review could ever do this book justice. It is wonderful, sincere, sad, and true. Rest assured, you will not be disappointed. HIGHLY recommended.

The Modest Hero

Audie Murphy's To Hell and Back is one of the quintessential front-line soldier accounts of the Second World War. The book is not a memoir or autobiography, since Murphy wrote little of it himself and describes little of his life before or after his combat experiences. Nor does Murphy even mention any of awards, including the Medal of Honor, or the fact that he served the entire war in B Company, 1-15th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division. The book focuses entirely on the period July 1943 to March 1945, with most of the emphasis on the Anzio, Southern France and Vosges campaigns. On the negative side, Murphy's account is extremely self-effacing and at times is more focused on his squad members, whose GI Joe conversations appear fake and silly. Nevertheless, Murphy's comrades appear as real human beings and the reader will regret the death of each. To Hell and Back is not particularly well written - it is in fact a rather pedestrian account that wanders at times - but what it lacks in style it delivers in frank reality. Murphy's wartime account is often brutal - sometimes humorous - but it makes other more recent homogenized efforts like Band of Brothers seem contrived in comparison.
Currently, the myth has been propagated that only highly trained specialists in peak physical and mental condition should engage in close infantry combat. Audi Murphy, the scrawny, orphaned teenager from Texas who was rejected by the marines and paratroopers, stands to discredit that myth. In combat, Murphy found his niche in life. With a carbine in his hands, Murphy became a real killer. Quick reflexes, common sense and a certain amount of luck gave him the edge and allowed him to survive all his original squad mates. A great deal has been written and speculated about Murphy's psychology and motivations; there is no doubt that he sought out combat even when he could have avoided it. Was he a war-lover or have a death wish? No. Murphy fought because he was good at it. As the main character in the French film Capitaine Conan noted, "millions were in the war but only a few thousand actually fought it." Murphy was one of those soldiers who was never content just to survive the war but rather, he was strongly motivated to play an active role. While Murphy never cracked under the strain of nearly two years of combat, there is little doubt that the war marked him indelibly. By Anzio, Murphy had become imbued with a tough, no-nonsense set of values. At the end of To Hell and Back, Murphy writes, "when I was a child, I was told that men were branded by war. Has the brand been put on me? Have the years of blood and ruin stripped me of all decency? Of all belief? Not of all belief. I believe in the force of a hand grenade, the power of artillery, the accuracy of a Garand. I believe in hitting before you get hit, and that dead men do not look noble."
Unfortunately, the weakest aspect of To Hell and Back is the author's failure to paint a complete portrait of himself. Important issues, like how did a combat-wise Sergeant Murphy deal with his inexperienced lieutenants in Anzio or France are virtually ignored. The fact that Murphy rose from squad leader, to platoon sergeant, to platoon leader to company commander in the same company is never addressed, but would have been very interesting. How did Murphy handle the transition from enlisted, to NCO to commissioned officer surrounded by his peers? To Hell and Back is enhanced by the fact that it was written only shortly after the war when memories were still sharp, but the rush to publish a "blood and guts" account undermines the value of Murphy's story. The brief introduction by Tom Brokaw also appears a blatant attempt to market a dead hero, as if his name was brand-name merchandise. Brokaw says nothing of value in this introduction, and it should have been written by somebody who actually knew the man, rather than some publicity-hog talking head from NBC who never met him or served in the military.
Hopefully, the reprint of To Hell and Back will help to keep alive the notion that America can produce fine soldiers from places other than West Point. Murphy's book should also be compared with other war memoirs from other authors and other wars. Recently, I read the Persian Gulf War memoir entitled The Eyes of Orion, and was struck by the authors' near-obsession with post-war graduate school plans while remaining virtually oblivious to their potential for battlefield death. Murphy said, "until the last shot is fired, I will go on living from day to day, making no postwar plans." Compared with the pretentious, homogenized, backbiting Band of Brothers, Murphy's book seems incredibly modest and civil. Although Murphy's unit suffered heavy casualties and was often short of food in the front-line, the author never complained about his superiors or the US Army. Murphy's unselfish and uncritical reflection of his wartime service should stand as an example of others who serve and write.
