About Dawn Of The Morning by Grace Livingston Hill
Dawn Rensselaer is a runaway bride, fleeing a husband she was tricked into marrying. But is she also running away from love? In the year 1824, in a pleasant town located between Schenectady and Albany, stood the handsome colonial residence of Hamilton Van Rensselaer. Solemn hedges shut in the family pride and hid the family sorrow, and about the borders of its spacious gardens, where even the roses seemed subdued, there played a child. The stately house oppressed her, and she loved the sombre garden best Her only friend in the old house seemed a tall clock that stood on the stairs and told out the hours in the hopeless tone that was expected of a clock in such a house, though it often took time to wink pleasantly at the child as she passed by, and talk off a few seconds and minutes in a brighter tone. But the great clock on the staircase ticked awesomely one morning as the little girl went slowly down to her father's study in response to his bidding...

Dawn of the Morning.

The author wrote this book included in the characters, all human emotions, hardships, and forgiveness and survival with a happy ending. I was able to set the book aside, then return later and read the story without difficulty. Good light read.

Romance in the early 1920's
By S. mccoy
This book was written in 1911. It has to be read in that historical perspective to understand this allegorical story of growth, burgeoning independence, and romance.
Plot line is a simple romantic one. Lovely, lonely Dawn is hated by her stepmother, ignored by her father and sent away to school. She narrowly escapes marriage to the villain, "accidentally" marries the villain's brother, Charles, and then scared, runs away. After many adventures, Dawn and Charles end up married and settled in a vine covered cottage. In her journey, Dawn matures and faces many adversarial challenges-becoming an independent strong woman (as much as the time period allowed!). This story is a Pilgrim's Progress for early 20th century readers.
Grace's style of writing does not translate well to the 21st century readers. Flowery prose is not the sparse, terse style most modern readers are used to. I really enjoyed her descriptions--she paints with her words.
I enjoyed reading this book. It transposed me to a supposedly simpler time-away from city life, smartphones, and stress.
