About the Author
T.Z. Lavine is currently Elton Professor of Philosophy at George Washington University. Professor Lavine received a Ph.D. from Harvard University and has received, among other awards, the Josiah Royce Fellow in Philosophy and a research fellowship in philosophy (Harvard). The author of numerous articles and books, Professor Lavine wrote and presented From Socrates to Sartre as a television series for the Maryland Center for Public Broadcasting, a series which is now included in the curriculum of the National University Consortium.

Very good introduction...

Being philosophy one of my main interests , I have read several introductory books, and this book is , in my humble opinion, one of the best around. It explains in very clear fashion all the concepts and theories and keeps going back to them so that you are always in contact with the main issues presented in the book.
On the other hand , I just love the style and the well balanced way in which Prof. Lavine presents and discusses every topic.

Simple words for simple wording

I have been reading all of the customer reviews, and it seems that they have been missing the whole point of this book. By no means is this a "lesbian" book, or a book that completely focuses on dealing with "coming out". Nor should this book be read exclusively by lesbians. It's a book that simply follows a unique, strong young woman from when she was a kid to when she grows up into her 20's. Futhermore, the simple style is the essence of the book; more complicated wording would not embody the character of Molly nearly as well. The point is that Molly, who is sassy and a shamelessly cut-and-dry lesbian, does not think that things should be overanalyzed and obsessed over. She sees everything as obvious and blatant. Hence the simple language. It is an unapologetic, extremely funny book, and it is hard to put it down. It pulls you in from the beginning and continues to stay exciting throughout this girl's tumultuous life. In some ways she grows, but in others she never does compromise her gutsy, fiery self. I loved it.

Once is not enough

Read this when it was first published and adored it. At the time I was asked how I could like a lesbian book and was asked if I was secretly gay. REALLY. I don't know what made me think of it again but as a 65y/o I believe I got ever more from it this time. I loved molly then and now. I wished then and I was more like her and now happy that I have more of molly in me. Still not gay but still a lover of fabulous women. Fiction or non fiction. Thank you Rita Mae for Molly and Dolly. Can't wait to start six of one, bingo and loose lips.

this book changed my life. at first I was skeptical because it was written during a different time period so I was unsure if I would be able to relate or not, but I was pleasantly surprised. It tells the story of a woman experiencing the world, fearlessly being true to herself. Since coming out to myself, I've been in search of lesbian role models. Well, folks, I've found one in Molly.

Plot is kind of old...

This book used a rather hackneyed plot: Girl(usually WASP) from wealthy parents falls in love with guy from a poorer family or minority family, girl's parents are snobs and dissaprove of girl's boyfriend and think he's not good enough for their fragile, precious daughter. Another hackneyed addition to this plot: wrong- side-of-the-tracks boyfriend "proves" his worthiness to girl's snobby parents by rescuing the girl. So was the plot with Sandy and Manuel. I might have switched it around so the boy was the one stuck with snobby, wealthy parents. Add variety to overused plots. That's what Ann Martin did in her BSC series. In the BSC, with Logan and Mary Anne, Logan's parents are the wealthier ones and his father looks down his nose at Mary Anne, who comes from a poorer family. AND, Mary Anne doesn't wait around for Logan to rescue her. If I'd been in Sandy's shoes, I'd have brought Manuel to meet her parent early and let her parents see for themselves what he was like!

Man,Sandra made me sick in this book.She was dating -and so-called in love- with a spanish boy who her father doesn't approve of and she treats him like absolute dirt,trying to keep the truth from her parents.

About the Author
Rex Stout, born 1886 in Indiana/USA, worked at thirty different professions until he earned enough money to travel. In 1932, he began to write thrillers focusing on the famous detective Nero Wolfe. Nero is a gourmet weighing more than a hundred kilos, and moving as little as possible. Rex Stout finished more than fifty novels and received the "Grand Masters Award." He died 1975.

Nero Wolfe--A.C.E. Detective

Nero Wolfe is constantly getting himself into fixes through three character flaws. Arrogance, Cupidity, and Eccentricity. He must then shake off his indolence and use his intelligence to extricate himself from whatever predicament he stumbles into. Frequently he must extricate himself through the device of an elaborate caper designed to expose a killer while simultaneously burying his embarrassment.
Each of the four stories in this book has as its centerpiece an elaborate caper. In two of the stories Wolfe engineers a caper to extricate himself from danger; in the one the caper places him in danger; in the fourth, he is victimized by a caper and solves the mystery through sheer force of logic and deduction.
In "Christmas Party" Wolfe's fear that Archie is going to marry causes him to masquerade as Santa Claus and become prime suspect in a murder. In "Easter Parade" Wolfe's envy of a rival orchid grower causes him to stoop to petit theft and become embroiled in a murder mystery. In "Fourth of July Picnic" Wolfe discovers a murder at a picnic, attempts to flee without reporting it, and must expose the murderer before he himself gets arrested for obstructing justice. In "Murder is No Joke" Wolfe provides all the usual suspects with an ironclad alibi. How can he break an alibi that he himself provides?
Classic murder mysteries rarely bear any resemblance to reality. I've handled hundreds of homicide cases over the years, and the puzzles presented by real life homicide investigations bear no resemblance whatsoever to the puzzles presented in murder mysteries. You can imagine my pleasure on finding that Wolfe solved one of the mysteries in this book with exactly the same stratagem employed in a case that I prosecuted years ago. I've long since lost track of the investigator who solved that little mystery, but if I ever see him again, I'm certainly going to ask him if he has ever read any Nero Wolfe.

Holiday spirit at the brownstone

This edition now boasts "As Seen on TV!" on its cover, alluding to the fact that 1 (so far) of the 4 short stories herein has been adapted by A&E. Since 3 of the 4 are set during major holidays, Jane Haddam (author of the Gregor Demarkian holiday mysteries) was selected to write the forward. Apart from her forward and the afterward, the book is pure Stout, set after both _Black Orchids_ and _The Black Mountain_.
All four are murder investigations. The Ingram editorial review incorrectly implies that the killings were committed by 1 person - they're not. The cases are unrelated, and are only grouped in one volume because of a common holiday theme.
"Christmas Party" - The A&E adaptation is faithful to the story. Archie, having arranged for a day off, receives brusque instructions to cancel his plans and drive Wolfe out to Mr. Hewitt's for a special orchid powwow. He whips out a marriage license (!), with the news that he must attend his fiancee's office Christmas party that day. You've _got_ to read this one, if only for Wolfe's reaction to this. :)
"Easter Parade" - Rumor (via his gardener) has it that Millard Bynoe has bred a pink Vanda, but he refuses to admit it or display it before his wife wears a blossom for the Easter parade. Wolfe, giving in to acute orchid envy, has Archie arrange for a petty thief to steal it under cover of parade photographers. Unfortunately, that's the day that someone poisons Mrs. Bynoe, apparently with a dart shot from a fake camera.
When originally published in a magazine, the photos referred to in the text were provided in color as clues. The old hardcover edition of the book provided them in B&W; this edition omits them altogether. It's a pity, but does not detract from the story.
"Fourth of July Picnic" - Wolfe never leaves the brownstone on business; his friend Marko Vukcic (and by extension, his restaurant, Rusterman's) is associated with most of the things that can get him out. He has agreed to give a speech at the annual picnic of the Restaurant Workers of America, if they'll stop harassing Fritz to join their union.
"Murder is No Joke" - A different version of this story appears in _Death Times Three_.

Spend the holidays with Nero and Archie, and quickly discover Wolfe quick thinking as he solves the mysteries faster than you can turn the pages. The last one is particularly good, as Wolfe takes offense to the fool who tries to fool him. In the others, Wolfe himself is cast in the spotlight as the police begin to even suspect his involvement - but naturally, his intellect always bails him out.

SoulMates is awesome

So many people are confused about what a soul mate really is. We can have dozens in our lifetime. They do not necessarily have to be someone we stay with forever or that makes our lives all sweetness & light. They are "sacred contracts" we had with others in our "soul groups" from the spirit world. They are presented to us as messengers to help us learn certain lessons about love [which includes loving ourselves], compassion, letting go and letting God -among other things that only those 2 will be privy to. All of us are a 'soulmate' to someone else in this journey of evolutionary maturity. And we usually see each other again in another lifetime if we choose. But the reasons will change.
When Gov. Mark Sanford said his amour in Argentina was his "soulmate", I'm sure she is ONE of them. But his wife, Jenny, was, too. They are soulmates in different forms and for different reasons and lessons. Most people don't comprehend the whole concept, which confuses them and limits their ability to learn the lesson presented.
Jess Stearn's book is one of the best vehicles I have encountered to explain the multi-faceted definition{s} of a highy abstract concept. Stearn makes you look deeper into yourself and reflect on the speed, intensity, and depth of your relationships. He writes of the experiences of normal people like you and I, who, with hypnosis softening the wall of time, slip comfortably back to a period when they lived and loved before. I don't want to come back in another human form,

This is not your typical book on the psychology of relationships. It is a metaphysical book.

It has very interesting stories on how some have found their soulmates.

It gets a bit more questionable when the author and interviews get into the past, present and beyond.

I am not one who believes in re-incarnation like the author and other's like Edgar Cayce, Shirley McLaine etc. But I do however belief that whatever relationships we have had in the present will also be in the beyond, if we choose to go forward with the relationships. The choice is always ours.

I started reading Edgar Cayce in the 1960's and I very much respect Cayce and his works. He was a very formidable influence on many of us in the metaphysical world.

Let me explain why re-incarnation is questionable in my own life. I was brought up in a very religious Catholic family, my father was studying for the priesthood, left it all behind after seminary school. I have 3 aunts who are religious and 2 uncles who entered the priesthood (all deceased except one aunt.) So you might say I was a bit brainwashed. Let's move on to the 1970's and after much searching, I slowly (still am) pushed myself away from many of the Church's teachings.

Re-Incarnation to me was about Jesus who came on earth to deliver a very important message. "To love one another and He loves us." Jesus being the incarnation of God the Father.

Personally, I don't want to come back in another human form, I want to move on into the beyond, be the person that I am and grow in love and wisdom.

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. IT REMINDED ME SO MUCH OF MY HUSBANDS FAMILY. ESPECIALLY DOLLYS MOTHER. I LAUGHED , I CRIED, I GUESS YOU COULD SAY YOU RUN THE GAMBIT OF EMOTIONS WITH THIS BOOK. DOLLY'S SISTER DID A GREAT JOB. IT WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND I WAS SO GLAD SHE INCLUDED SOME PICTURES OF THEM AT DIFFERENT AGES. I WOULD RECOMMENDED THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO IS A DOLLY PARTON FAN OR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT DOLLY BEFORE SHE BECAME FAMOUS. GREAT BOOK! SUSIE NEICE
