Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, by Bobby Fischer, Stuart Margulies, Don Mosenfelder

This book is essentially a chess teaching machine. The way a teaching machine works is: It asks you a question. If you give the right answer, it goes on to the next question. If you give the wrong answer, it tells you why the answer is wrong and tells you to go back and try again. This is called "programmed learning". The real authors were experts and authorities in the field of programmed learning. Bobby Fischer lent his name to the project. Stuart Margulies is a chess master and also a recognized authority on programmed learning. He is a widely published author of more than 40 books, all in the field of programmed learning, especially in learning how to read. For example, one of his books is "Critical reading for proficiency 1 : introductory level". Donn Mosenfelder is not a known or recognized chess player, but he was the owner of the company that developed and designed this book. He has written more than 25 books, almost all on basic reading, writing and math. The definitive way to learn how to play chess, or to master more complex chess strategies.

Sheesh, relax, it's only a book
By David Richmond
Wow, so many reviews bashing this book for promising the moon and the stars and then not delivering! It's not a bad book!

If you are brand new to chess, want to learn to play relatively quickly, without getting bogged down with the more advanced stuff, and want something you can pick up and put down for short periods of time, this is a good book for you. You will learn the rules of the game and the basics of winning the game (checkmate, not long term strategy). It's pretty engaging because it doesn't spend a lot of time on explanations, instead most of its space is devoted to puzzles. Each page has a short one-move puzzle, with the answer on the next page. It's a pretty quick 'read', and it's pretty basic, probably anyone over 1300 should look for something more advanced.

I'm a little amused at all of the gripes:

"It wasn't written by Bobby Fischer." - OK, fine, but that doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. Many books supposedly by experts were really ghostwritten, doesn't make them worthless. And knowing Bobby's anti-social nature, I suspect he wouldn't be the greatest teacher himself, anyway ;)

"It doesn't teach chess." Sure it does. No, it doesn't teach *all* aspects of chess, but it does teach chess! It teaches everything you need to know to complete an entire game.

"Not enough written text." This is more of a learn-by-doing kind of book.

"Other books are better." Yep, there's lots of great books out there. This one has some good stuff in it, too.

Title is misleading!
By A Customer
This book has the title that made me think there was covering of all points of chess. But when I got the book Bobby Fischer only sets up positions (and only one per page) where you must find a checkmate that is very, very easy to find. Every page is like this. I should have read the reviews on it so I could have spent the money on a top book that teaches beginners. If you are are reading this (like I should have read the reviews) then do not buy this book unless you want a bunch of easy to solve checkmate positions instead of a book that has real lessons to learn from. I have since gotten "Chess for Juniors" and "How to Beat your Dad at Chess". "Chess for Juniors" gives very good lessons and "How to Beat your Dad" has checkmate positions but tells you much more about them.

Not very useful as a book to learn to checkmate from
By A Customer
As a book that only covers how to checkmate it has so few problems compared to every other book I have seen that covers checkmates that it is a waste of time and money. The checkmates were so simple that as a beginner I went through about half of them in five minutes and stopped after that. Even for a beginner it is worthwhile to get a book with more examples and one that explains the different types of checkmates.

The Late Romances: Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, The Tempest (Bantam Classics), by William Shakespeare

Pericles
The first of Shakespeare’s late romances moves spectacularly from one dramatic period to another as the hero, Pericles, sails off to adventure and love, and experiences what for him is a miracle.

Cymbeline
A favorite romantic drama, this play of a wife unjustly accused of faithlessness moves from a world of intrigue and slander to one of reconciliation and forgiveness, and contains two of Shakespeare’s most poignantly beautiful songs.

The Winter's Tale
From a darkly melodramatic beginning to a joyous pastoral ending, this romance of a jealous king and his long-suffering queen is superb entertainment, with revelations, plot twists, and a final compelling theatrical moment of discovery.

The Tempest
This tale of the exiled Duke of Milan, marooned on an enchanted island, is so richly filled with music and magic, romance and comedy, that its theme of love and reconciliation offers a splendid feast for the senses and the heart.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564, and his birth is traditionally celebrated on April 23. The facts of his life, known from surviving documents, are sparse. He was one of eight children born to John Shakespeare, a merchant of some standing in his community. William probably went to the King’s New School in Stratford, but he had no university education. In November 1582, at the age of eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior, who was pregnant with their first child, Susanna. She was born on May 26, 1583. Twins, a boy, Hamnet ( who would die at age eleven), and a girl, Judith, were born in 1585. By 1592 Shakespeare had gone to London working as an actor and already known as a playwright. A rival dramatist, Robert Greene, referred to him as “an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers.” Shakespeare became a principal shareholder and playwright of the successful acting troupe, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men (later under James I, called the King’s Men). In 1599 the Lord Chamberlain’s Men built and occupied the Globe Theater in Southwark near the Thames River. Here many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed by the most famous actors of his time, including Richard Burbage, Will Kempe, and Robert Armin. In addition to his 37 plays, Shakespeare had a hand in others, including Sir Thomas More and The Two Noble Kinsmen, and he wrote poems, including Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. His 154 sonnets were published, probably without his authorization, in 1609. In 1611 or 1612 he gave up his lodgings in London and devoted more and more time to retirement in Stratford, though he continued writing such plays as The Tempest and Henry VII until about 1613. He died on April 23 1616, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford. No collected edition of his plays was published during his life-time, but in 1623 two members of his acting company, John Heminges and Henry Condell, put together the great collection now called the First Folio.

Shakespeare's Romantic Fairy Tales
By Ronald Sheikh
This edition includes Pericles, a prince who solves a riddle given by a king and is pursued because he discovers a terrible secret; Cymbeline, a story about Rome battling England with the memorable heroine, Imogen, and her jealous husband Posthumous. Happy Ending, but Imogen deserves better; Winter's Tale tells the story of incredibly Jealous husband Leontes and his suffering wife/heroine Hermione. A fairy tale to be told on a Winter's Eve; Tempest, a story of an exiled Magician who lives on an island with a fairy, Ariel, his daughter, Miranda, and a beast called Caliban.
All these stories are entertaining fairy tales with romantic themes. Highly recommended.

From Publishers Weekly
Company K of the 84th Division reached Europe in early November 1944, five months after D-Day, and was quickly ordered to Germany, where the Allied armies were advancing against furious resistance. Two members of the company present a vivid picture of the fierceness of front-line fighting in WW II as they follow the unit from Geilenkirchen through the battle for Wurm, back to Geilenkirchen and through the Battle of the Bulge to occupation duty. The authors avoid sentimental cliches in their depiction of a group of triumphant citizen-soldiers. Readers who are not veterans of Company K, however, may find the final chapters, about the post-war lives of these ex-GIs, anticlimactic. From Library Journal
This is the true account of a World War II rifle company. Formed of men from all parts of the country, Company K, 333rd Infantry, 84th Division saw more than one hundred days of combat, through the Battle of the Bulge to the Elbe River. Thirty-six men died, and nearly two hundred more were casualties by the time the war ended. Unusually well written, this account, as told in the words of the survivors, shows the side of war at which Keith Winston's V . . . Mail: letters of a World War II combat medic ( LJ 9/15/85) could only hint. The authors, former company officers, have drawn the battle and postwar experiences of these men and their families into one smooth, flowing narrative. Highly recommended for most collections. A well written first person account of the combat experience of "ordinary" American" soldiers in Europe during World War II
By John
The number of books about the U.S. involvement in World War II is so large as to almost defy one to count them, let alone read more than a small fraction.

They fall into several categories. Among those are are broad-scope third-person historical accounts, many written by professional historians, some of whom were recruited by the Army and Navy specifically to chronicle the war; some are first person autobiographical accounts by senior officers, such as General Eisenhower's "Crusade in Europe;" some are sweeping accounts by key civilian leaders, such as the set of volumes by Churchill which, sadly, is getting hard to find now (It is too bad that FDR died before getting to write a book, although several biographers have written terrific accounts of his leadership during the war, and his relationships and interaction with Churchill and Stalin.); some are biographical; others are in-depth studies of specific events, such as the many books written about the Battle of Midway, the Normandy Invasion, and the Battle of the Bulge; there are third-person works chronicling the combat experience of ordinary soldiers, which are based on many interviews (Obviously Steven Ambrose was a major figure in writing these, even if his originality was questioned at least once. The late Walter Lord was another.); and finally there are first-person accounts by men with extensive combat combat experience, and some women who were "there" but not combatants. The well-written books of each type all have value for those who enjoy history, and those who see read as studies of human nature, and performance under great stress.

As a history hobbyist and a college history major many years ago, I have read a good sampling of the books in each category, from the Battle of Agincourt to the First Gulf War. This is one of the best of the first person combat soldier accounts. As junior officers in one company, the authors saw extensive combat and lost many comrades, as their company suffered a terrible number of casualties. Company K reached Europe five months after the Normandy Invasion, and was rushed into combat. Its experiences, including the Battle of the Bulge and fighting across Germany, appear to have been representative of those of units experienced some of the toughest combat in Europe in 1944-45.

One factor which sets this book apart from many of the same type is the quality of the writing. No matter how interesting the subject matter, poor writing in a book can be a continuing distraction. Whether it was the original manuscript, good editing, or both, this book is very well written.

Regrettably, this book (first published over twenty years ago) is out of print, but used copies of the trade paperback version are available. Those interested in reading it this book should acquire a copy before they disappear.

The number of people who survived combat in World War II and are still living is no longer large, and decreases daily. Most are now in their late eighties or early nineties. There will not be many more first person accounts written, and those who are interested in the subject matter are fortunate to have this one.

Readers who enjoy the this book are encouraged to find a copy of "The Old Breed," an excellent if often blood-chilling account of the experience of a Marine Corps enlisted man in combat in the Pacific theater of war, including two horrific amphibious invasions.

A superb account of European ground warfare
By David Honish
This is a moving account of the combat experience of one rifle company as told by the commanders. What makes this book so special is all the personal recollections that are compiled. The men of company K get their first battle after D Day in Holland. They continue east through the battle of the bulge, the crossing of the Rhine, and occupation duty in the conquered Germany. The little personal touches are on every page. One man defines REMFS as "any sob behind my foxhole." A future mathematics professor uses geometry and a map to plot a German rocket launching site. The description of their Christmas Eve 1944 battle in the bulge, and how a Belgium village renamed their main street to honor this battle brings goosebumps to my arms as I recall it. One man blinded in this battle by tank gun fire was happy to know that his dreadful wound was his Christmas gift of survival and evacuation to the rear. Others recall the blinded soldier crawling over them to the rear without a guide and wishing them all "Merry Christmas" as he groped his way to the medics miles behind the battle. It was a battle in which company K fixed and held a numerically superior armored force with only rifles and grenades. In one captured German city with still working phones, a German speaking GI got a call through to German Army HQ in Berlin to tell them to "expect company K in about two weeks." This book is full of personal accounts of horror and humor, terror and triumph. This book evokes visualization by the reader like no other account of infantry combat in Europe. I only wish that the publisher would put it back in print! It should be required reading for high school U.S. History classes. Not because it is a historical text, but rather for the personal context it gives to such a critical point in history.

Stunning history brought to life
By J. Remington
It is almost tragic that this excellent, personal, detailed and brutally honest, heroic and even quietly poetic memoir has fallen out of print. This, perhaps one of the finest histories ever written about WWII, tells the story of the front line soldier from the first person.
Long before Saving Private Ryan inspired Tom Brokaw and the rest to capitalize on the rightfully named "Greatest Generation", Cambell and Leinbaugh's book captured the harrowing narrative of combat that so many men of that era are sadly taking to the grave with them. This book personlizes the story in a voice that appears to have been culled from a combat veteran reunion. The Men of Company K willingly recountsthe horror of battle as a permanent record. A warning really as to what freedom ultimately costs. May we be damned should we ever forget.
As a historical document, it boils in as much action and tension as any Clancy novel.
Ambrose frequently has used The Men of Company K as a carefully cited reference in his longer works. This alone may be a testament to its greatest. Please search this fine work out.

What adventure novels were meant to be.
By Jeffrey Kevin Hobbs
I read this beginning of the Sackett family series many years ago and enjoyed it just as much now as then. Few authors can recreate a setting and time period as well as L'Amour. And his description of combat whether hand to hand or with weapons is incredibly real.

A good read
By Trisha Faulk
He's always been a great writer, and I just had to start the Sacketts at the beginning. It was a really good start. Hope the next takes it to the next building step. This is kind of like a first chapter of a larger book.

L'Amour perhaps the greatest "Teller of Tales", not Tall Tales but ..... he is like someone relating events he was part of, not just a witness.
This is a GREAT intro to a tapestry that is the SACKETTS

Ten Entertainments
By A. Ross
Forsyth is best known for his taut thrillers, especially The Day of Jackal, but this collection of short stories reveals him a very competent crafter of clever short stories. Originally written in the early to late '70s (and three of which appeared in Playboy), each of the ten tales is a mini-morality tale, with a lighthearted tone and a twist of some sort. Their unifying theme is revenge/comeuppanceóeach story is about someone getting their just desserts one way or another. The exception to this is "Duty", which is not light at all and quite different in theme and perspective, and for those reasons, feels wholly out of place.

Two of the stories feature wealthy protagonists, including the title story, which tells of a handsome, successful English businessman who can have anything he wants from life and yet is still bored. It's the old "money can't buy you happiness" story, until one day he falls for a married woman. She admits the mutual attraction but won't leave her husband, and so the tycoon decides to send a hitman to solve the problem. The mechanics of the hitman's assignment are very compelling, and it all leads to an obvious twist that reaffirms the moral. "A Careful Man" is another rich man tale, but in this case, the wealthy coin dealer is dying of cancer and has no one he wants to leave his fortune toóleast of all his detestable sister and her family. His solution is fairly clever and the fun is in watching the odious family catch up with what the reader already knows.

Another set of stories feature unassuming hard-working middle-aged men who have yet to reap many fruits from their labors, and are generally married to unpleasant frigid nags. In "The Emperor", a bank manager vacations with his wife on a tropical island for the first (and probably last) time. It's basically the best experience of his life, and on the last day he quite daringly sneaks out for some sport fishing. This is transformative in a fairly predictable way, but satisfying nonetheless. In "Money With Menaces", an unassuming man comes across a "swingers" magazine on the train, and is intrigued by the idea of meeting a woman for sex. He falls right into an obvious blackmail scheme, but for once Forsyth hides the twist until the end, providing perhaps the best resolution of all the stories. "Privilege" starts with a small businessman who has been libeled in the newspaper and seeks redress. His lawyer dissuades him from suing, pointing out that winners of such suits usually incur huge financial costs that aren't worth the satisfaction of winning. Studying the libel statutes for a few days, he spots a possible form of redress. This story seems a little strange, as Britain has some of the harshest libel penalties in the Western world. "Used in Evidence" is about an old man who may or may not have killed his wife thirty years previously.

Three of the stories are set in Ireland, a place Forsyth had a great personal interest in. "There Are No Snakes In Ireland" is a straight-out revenge tale, pitting a hard-working Indian student against his persecutor, a racist UVF thug. "There Are Some DaysÖ" is a comedy of errors about the heist of a truck of French brandy which goes completely pear-shaped. As in other stories, the reader knows more than the characters, and the pleasure comes in watching it all unfold. "Sharp Practice" takes place on a train, where a judge, priest, and humble worker pass the time with a friendly game of poker. Anyone who's knows a bit about con artistry will see the setup and likely result a mile away, but it's still good fun.

All in all this is a very solid, if not spectacular set of stories. No doubt due to his journalistic background, Forsyth is great with the details of the stories, especially how people go about their work. His characters tend to be types rather than individuals, but for the kind of stories he tells, that's all you really need. As morality tales they are all set up and executed quite cleverly. And yet for all that, there's a kind of disposable element to them; none will make you sit up and say "wow".

classic Forsyth enjoyable short fiction
By mackattack9988
Frederick Forsyth is an excellent author, and No Comebacks will serve as a fine introduction for readers new to his work. If you're already familiar with Forsyth, this is a collection of short stories similar to The Veteran. The stories in No Comebacks are shorter, usually about 20-30 pages each, ten in all. They are a little more lighthearted than the tone of Forsyth's novels, which are predominantly serious, and most involve an unexpected twist or turn along the way (sometimes saved for the very end). There's a story in here for everyone: a playboy in pursuit of a married woman, a victim of prejudice out for revenge, an answer to a mid-life crisis, a way to handle extortion, a response to a soiled reputation, and a unique way to settle an estate, to name a few. Timeless little episodes that are well-written and delightful to read.

Pure Forsyth -- positively splendid
By Doug Briggs
The short story demands a special talent and a special market. The diminishing market has, not surprisingly, just about dried up the development of talent. Back when the Saturday Evening Post, Sports Afield, the Farm Quarterly, Colliers and so many other periodicals kept a roaring fire under the genre we took swell short stories and short story writers for granted -- they were all over the place.
Not a single name comes to me from those bountiful years -- I have to go back to Poe and the old master, Ambrose Bierce, to even throw out a couple of examples.
The collection in No Comebacks was a welcome surprise, and I had to stumble onto the volume purely by accident, not knowing that Forsyth had even written short stories. He's got the talent for it, that's for sure.
Any reader who appreciates good, crisp short stories will love every one of these by Forsyth. But maybe the audience for them has ebbed, too. Which may explain why this worthy book is not readily available.
