Nice serendipitous find
By Spencer Smith
I bought this book solely based on the Amazon reviews. It was a leap of faith, as it's been out of print for 25 years and the best available price was a dollar a year. With such universal praise I hoped I wouldn't go wrong at that price. I must admit I found the writing style very awkward at first and it took a while to get into the speech flow of the main character. But perseverence was rewarded. The plot is extremely well put together, and builds nicely to the climax. The characters come to life, and as you can get used to anything after a while, I got used to the speech patterns of the protagonist early enough in the book to enjoy the read immensely. Certainly a top 50 in my SF collection.

An excellent book. I had read a sequel and wanted to know what the beginning of the story was. I hope there is another in the series

A Rip-Roaring, Uplifting Tale of the End of the World (as we know it!)
By EcoInfo Guy
A book to drive grammarians crazy - and to thrill sci-fi fans. David R. Palmer's book contains almost no personal pronouns, complete sentences or ambiguous meanings. Quite a feat! Of course, he cheated a bit - by eliminating almost everyone to whom personal pronouns could apply before the book starts.

"End of the world" books tend to be depressing. However, this is the exception. "Candy" the 11-year old protagonist in the book is so full of life, and her story so full of both surprises and interesting details, that "Beginning of the World" might be a better characterization.

This book is a real favorite of mine and warrants a frequent re-reading. For those who grew up in the 60's and 70's David Palmer hides references to some cultural gems in the tale (e.g., "Gus" the name of an old auto mechanic referred to in the text is clearly the "Gus Wilson" of the long-running "Model Garage" (1920-1969)series in Popular Science Magazine). If you don't spot them, no harm done - but they are an added treat if you do.

After one additional book "Threshold" (a good book, but Emergence is better), David R. Palmer seems to have disappeared from the writing scene. Rumors of his fate have included both death (he had some dangerous hobbies that add authenticity to some the latter sections of the book) and a "real job" that has kept him away from writing. This leaves me a bit torn - I'd like him to write more - but at the same time, I'm more than grateful for "Emergence"!

Still Slightly Skeptical
By Vlucas1112004
I did enjoy the book, and think that Terry did an excellent job. It was an interesting read, and has my curiosity raging.

BUT...The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I found Terry to contradict his own theories at times. They were small contradictions, but noticeable enough to make me think, "Hmmm..." Couple that with too many secret sources and the fact that Terry does exactly what he criticizes the police for doing: At times, his theories stretch WAY beyond what the facts present. I just felt some thing were twisted too far to fit the book purpose.

Still, the book is worth reading.

Very, Very Good.
By DeSade
This book was mentioned by David McGowan in his book Programmed To Kill which I read & which is also an outstanding book.
So I decided to find and buy The Ultimate Evil. Well it's not disappointed at all. This book goes into a lot of info that's never been made public and which then gives you a full picture of what really happened.
I highly recommend this book. If you decide to buy it I'd advise you to buy Programmed To Kill by David McGowan & read that one first & then read this one. Even though this one was written quite a few years before P.T.K. David's book gives you a lot of information and groundwork to be able and read T.U.E. with better understanding.
I highly recommend both books.

Shockingly scary because it is not fiction!
By A Customer
Maury Terry takes you into a world of horrifying killings, cover-ups and conspiricies. You will be amazed at what you learn about the most brutal murders to plague New York City. The book takes you from New York to California to Texas and North Dekota. The amount of evidence that the police ignored in their rush to find the "lone" killer will astonish you. I cannot remember when I was more freightened reading a book. You will learn the truth! END

The Red Badge of Courage (Bantam Classics), by Stephen Crane

First published in 1895, America's greatest novel  of the Civil War was written before 21-year-old  Stephen Crane had "smelled even the powder of a  sham battle." But this powerful psychological  study of a young soldier's struggle with the  horrors, both within and without, that war strikes the  reader with its undeniable realism and with its  masterful descriptions of the moment-by-moment riot  of emotions felt by me under fire. Ernest  Hemingway called the novel an American classic, and  Crane's genius is as much apparent in his sharp,  colorful prose as in his ironic portrayal of an episode  of war so intense, so immediate, so real that the  terror of battle becomes our own ... in a  masterpiece so unique that many believe modern American  fiction began with Stephen Crane.

From Library Journal
Like the Carroll volume above, this edition of the seasoned veteran provides a new twist. Crane's Badge was originally serialized in the New York Press in 1894, a year before the story was published in novel form. This volume offers both the slightly different serial version and the finished work. Though every library no doubt has numerous copies of Red Badge, academic and public libraries supporting American literature curricula should pop for this one, too, especially at the price.

Great Story, Good Kindle Edition
By Robert Brooks
Unlike many others I was never required to read "The Red Badge of Courage" in High School. When I saw that it was among the many other classics that are now available for free on the Kindle I happily took the opportunity to read it; I am glad that I did.

There are plenty of reviews of the novel itself on the print version, so first a note about the Kindle Edition of this book: I found no typos or poor formatting of the text throughout the Kindle Edition, which is a nice change from many of the other free classics. The only problem with this edition is that the table of contents does not work. It looks as if it should, but it is apparently just a large image within the text file, instead of clickable links to the relevant sections of the book. This is not a big deal, but it is always nice to have a working table of contents for reference.

As for the story: The Red Badge of Courage tells the story of Henry, often referred to as the "Youth," and his transformation over the course of a few days. Considering the author never fought in a war, his reflections on the the way battles can change a person are truly insightful, and at times even breath-taking. Stephen Crane also had a talent for describing the world around Henry allowing the reader to feel as if they are in the novel. The book is quite short, but Crane does a great job developing Henry's character. As Henry goes from scared, to terrified, to arrogant, and eventually humble, you find yourself actively liking and disliking Henry through his transformation, as if you were there.

There are two particular literary devices Crane uses that I particularly enjoyed and make the novel poetic at times. First, almost all of the characters have both a name and them also a character description. For example, Henry is "the Youth," he has a friend "the loud youngster" and so on for all the main characters. This reinforces the idea that this is not just a book about a particular person or group of people, but about people in general. The second device is the way Crane uses common themes. So, the word red is used an adjective of the novel, just as it is in the title. Or, another example, Henry is walking through the woods that remind him of a chapel: from that moment there is a chorus, steeple, etc., used as adjectives and metaphors for the next few pages. This is truly poetic.

I am grateful that there are teams of volunteers that put this material together and release it for free for the Kindle. The Red Badge of Courage was a quick and entertaining read: if, like me, you did not have the chance to read it when you were younger I would certainly recommend it.

Not a kids' book
By Amazon Customer
As a British reader, I just recently read and reviewed this book over on Amazon.co.uk, and I thought I'd have a look at the US reviews for comparison - and immediately realised that this is obviously a "set book" in US schools. I can see the logic - the book is about a young person, it's short and (superficially) exciting, with lots of action, and it has some good moral/ethical themes ripe for class discussion.

Nonetheless, I was not surprised to see a number of negative reviews from kids. I don't think I would have appreciated it as a 13 (or whatever) year old. The writing style (deliberately) reflects the state of mind of the protagonist - confused. This in NOT an "adventure" story, it's a blood-and-guts account of a dirty day in a dirty war. As such, it reminded me very much of some of the recent first-hand accounts of infantrymen in WWII, Korea, Vietnam or even Iraq. It's about the way the mind can obsess on tiny details in the middle of chaos - how sights, smells and sounds become almost hallucinogenic as the mind approaches breaking point. As such, it is astonishing.

But if you want a REAL adventure story (not suitable for the under-13s!) read a biography of Crane himself. Hemingway meets James Dean is the only way to describe it.

Crane's classic study of the effects of war on a young man.
By R. D. Allison (dallison@biochem.med.ufl.edu)
When I was in high school several years ago, this was one of the books required in one of my English classes. And, upon going through the many reviews below, I find that it is still a required book for today's students. But, several appear to find Crane's novel "boring," "difficult to read," and nothing that they can "relate to." I heard many of the same things in the early 1960s. But, then I found myself in an environment not too dissimilar of the main character of the novel. It suddenly became relevent and real. Crane's depiction of war and the thoughts of young men at war, both willing and unwilling, will always be relevant. This novel is the psychological study of a young soldier and his first encounters with the brutality seen in battle (many critics have regarded this book as the first modern war novel). The unnamed battle in the novel is probably Chancellorsville (1863). The young infantryman, Henry Fielding, faces his first battle wanting to prove himself a hero. However, when the battle is actually thrust upon him, he is overcome by fear and he runs. He joins the wounded but he has not won their "red badge of courage." He sees his friend Jim Conklin killed and he becomes enraged, particularly at the injustice of war. (I remember noting the significance of the initials J. C. for the soldier's friend; but, I later discovered that this observation was not original. The novel is filled with imagery. For example, even the horsemen of the apocalypse make an appearance.) This is a great novel and I hope it remains on reading lists for years to come.

The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas père

Excerpt: ... to the baroness. Having bowed to the two ladies, he extended his hand to Debray. By the baroness he was most graciously welcomed, while Eugenie received him with her accustomed coldness. "My dear fellow," said Debray, "you have come in the nick of time. There is madame overwhelming me with questions respecting the count; she insists upon it that I can tell her his birth, education, and parentage, where he came from, and whither he is going. Being no disciple of Cagliostro, I was wholly unable to do this; so, by way of getting out of the scrape, I said, 'Ask Morcerf; he has got the whole history of his beloved Monte Cristo at his fingers' ends;' whereupon the baroness signified her desire to see you." "Is it not almost incredible," said Madame Danglars, "that a person having at least half a million of secret-service money at his command, should possess so little information?" "Let me assure you, madame," said Lucien, "that had I really the sum you mention at my disposal, I would employ it more profitably than in troubling myself to obtain particulars respecting the Count of Monte Cristo, whose only merit in my eyes consists in his being twice as rich as a nabob. However, I have turned the business over to Morcerf, so pray settle it with him as may be most agreeable to you; for my own part, I care nothing about the count or his mysterious doings." "I am very sure no nabob would have sent me a pair of horses worth 32,000 francs, wearing on their heads four diamonds valued at 5,000 francs each." "He seems to have a mania for diamonds," said Morcerf, smiling, "and I verily believe that, like Potemkin, he keeps his pockets filled, for the sake of strewing them along the road, as Tom Thumb did his flint stones." "Perhaps he has discovered some mine," said Madame Danglars. "I suppose you know he has an order for unlimited credit on the baron's banking establishment?" "I was not aware of it," replied Albert, "but I can readily believe it." "And, further,...

ROBIN BUSS's TRANSLATION from PENGUIN CLASSICS
By J. Cooper
This review is for those who've already decided they want to read The Count of Monte Cristo (you won't regret it!), and don't know which version to get.

Short answer: see review title, duh!

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book, and I've read several translations, both abridged and unabridged.

TRANSLATION
The Buss translation is the most modern, and reads most fluidly. A quick example comparing this translation with the one found on Project Gutenberg:

PG - His wife visited for him, and this was the received thing in the world, where the weighty and multifarious occupations of the magistrate were accepted as an excuse for what was really only calculated pride...

BUSS - His wife visited on his behalf; this was accepted in society, where it was attributed to the amount and gravity of the lawyer's business -- when it was, in reality, deliberate arrogance...

Buss's work reads like the book was written in English. The two or so times that the work is nearly untranslatable, Buss makes a footnote about it (eg, an insinuated insult using the formal "vous" instead of the familiar "tu"). Other translations just skip the subtlety. The most common translation out there (uncredited in my version) reads like a swamp. Trust me, get Buss.

ABRIDGED V UNABRIDGED
Abridged versions of this book rarely say "abridged." You can tell by the size: abridged is 500-700 pages, unabridged is 1200-1400 pages. Go for the unabridged.

The abridged version is VERY confusing! Pruning 1200 pages down to 600 leaves a lot of plot on the cutting room floor. Suddenly, arriving at dinner are 4 new characters; it's very tiring to try to keep up with the hole-ridden story of the abridged versions. And you know where the holes are? Publishers "clean up" the book by omitting the affairs, illegitimate children, homosexuality, hashish trips, etc.

As an added bonus in the Penguin Classics edition, there's a wonderful appendix bursting with footnotes to explain all the 19th century references, and a quick guide to the rise and fall of Napoleon (crucial to the politics in the story).

Hope this helps. Get the book and start reading!

Absolutely the best book ever
By Book lover
This book is an example of perfect fiction writing. Its length is 5 times the average book and it still was not long enough! The story, the characters, the settings and the emotions enthralled me for days. I could not put it down. I was living the book as it took me to France, the mediterranean, Italy and every home, cave and mode of transportation detailed in exemplary fashion by Dumas. Without giving away the intrigue... This book is the story of a wronged young sailor and follows his life as he is imprisoned due to the actions of 3 jealous men. He lives in prison for an extended period of time, meeting a man who gives him hope and a life beyond his dreams. He escapes the horrid dungeon and seeks revenge on the 3 men who took away everything he ever hoped for. This book is amazing, it will not disappoint anyone. I cannot believe I did not read it before. Thank you Kindle for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book for free, however, it is worth paying for and sharing with anyone who loves to read.

A gripping tale of love and revenge
By PurpleKat
Warning: Do NOT pick this book up and start it if you have something that you need to do in the next day or three. You won't be able to put the book down, or if you do, you'll move zombielike through your everyday tasks while your mind stays with the adventures of Edmund Dantes.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a delicious book, full of intrigue, great fight scenes, love, passion, and witty social satire. Dumas has a wonderful grasp of human nature and a talent for rendering all the follies of man in delightful, snappy prose. I immediately recognized people that I know (yes, even myself) in his vivid characters, which made the book all the more engaging to me.
Some people might be put off by the size of the book -- it's a pretty hefty volume -- an tempted to buy the abridged version. Don't! I've heard from people who've read both versions that the abridged version is a pathetic, washed out shadow of the full novel. At any rate, as thick and impossibly long as The Count of Monte Cristo may seem when you open it for the first time, you'll feel as though it's far too short by the time you get to the last page.

Tedius and overlong...
By boomer79
I really enjoyed the first two "Emily" books by LM Montgomery, especially the first one, which was quite touching and charming. This one however was awful, very bloated with page after page of scenery and background descriptions. I enjoy a nice sunset or moonlit night as much as the next person but that was pretty much all that was in this book. 200 pages of landscapes, over and over again. I found myself skipping big chunks of the book because I didn't want to labor through ANOTHER description of some pretty scenery. Honestly, the parts that actually concerned Emily and her life could easily have been tacked on in a few short chapters to the second Emily book, it was completely unneccesary to write a whole other book to describe them. Besides that it was terribly exasperating to have Teddy and Emily dancing around each other, wasting YEARS of their lives with other people because neither of them would simply SPEAK UP!! Neither of them would simply say, ever, "Hey, I love you. Let's get married." They certainly had plenty of opportunities. So you have to endure an agony of 200+ pages of thwarted love and near misses before they finally stumble onto the truth. All in all a very aggravating read that would have been charming and pleasant in a (much) shorter context.

He was amazed that I knew where he was headed way back ...
By Rod Wright
I was introduced to this book about 30 years ago, when I was unknowingly involved with an alcoholic. It really opened my eyes to the influences of alcohol. At that time, I gave a copy to another friend who was exhibiting the early signs of alcoholism. Several years later he called me to say that he'd found the book I'd given him and wanted me to know that he'd completed 6 months in AA. He was amazed that I knew where he was headed way back when I gave this book to him. I am now a substance abuse counselor and have repurchased this book to help my clients. I recommend it to all of those involved with those challenged by alcohol.

It Couldn't Really Happen Could It ?
By Jeff Marzano
I read this book as part of my ongoing research into the John Kennedy assassination. I'm not sure why this book was written but John Kennedy was still alive at that time. If ever a work of fiction somehow predicted the future this is it I guess.

As I learn more about the John Kennedy case I think I have an understanding of the mechanics of the assassination like how many shooters there were, how they covered it all up, etc.. But the most important questions are who wanted John Kennedy dead and why. And once the decision was made to kill him who were the architects behind the assassination.

This book matches up pretty well with the John Kennedy case, at least for conspiracy believers and at a high level. This story diverges from what happened to Kennedy in important ways however. Still I feel reading this book was worthwhile as I try to understand the JFK case better.

This story isn't as violent as the JFK assassination but it does include a few suspicious deaths. This story and the JFK conspiracy both involve individuals within the Military Industrial Complex who tried to decide what was good for everyone and then impose their will on everyone. The conspirators in this book are presented as being motivated by radical ideas while the JFK conspiracy involved people who were really motivated by greed and a lust for power. But perhaps the differences between those two types of motivations aren't as great as we might think.

The truth often turns out to be stranger than fiction ever could be. If this book is the fiction side and the John Kennedy assassination is the reality I would say that old saying is true in this case.

Intense, powerful, and a ripping good read! A true classic!
By Roger J. Buffington
"Seven Days in May" is an authentic classic political thriller of the first rank. Authors Baily and Knebel present a scenario in which an unpopular President is targeted by America's top military brass for an actual military takeover of the government. The story is complex, but vividly presented with an authenticity that is both disturbing and plausible. The reader is brought to understand that it could happen here, and the story suggests how such a scenario could come about in these United States.
The novel is well-written and fast-paced, never drags, and absolutely holds the reader's interest throughout. The amazing thing about the story is that every bit of it hangs together without straining the reader's sense of credulity. The novel features excellent writing, and the authors weave the plot together towards a conclusion that is startling and believable (no spoiler here).
This was a big budget movie in the 1960s featuring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster (available on DVD) and I would very much like to see a reprint of the novel become available, as my often-read paperback copy has long since fallen to pieces from frequent readings.
