Half way through the book at the moment, but ...
By Koco Papa
Half way through the book at the moment, but just wanted to stop by and share one of the authors futuristic views. Here he was talking about custom clothes fittings. there are apps nowadays that do exactly that. here is the quote "it may possible to read one's measurements into a telephone, or point a video camera at oneself, thus feeding data directly into a computer, which in turn will instruct the machine to produce a single garment, cut exactly at one's personal, individualized dimension."

Ideas about the changes in society
By Astro123
Reading this book now is looking at history. Was written as a look at the possible future.. Alvin Toffler has extensive documentation in his book. You can read and forget if you want, but he does present a viewpoint worth thinking about.

From Library Journal
Outlawed by the mage-priests of Thimhallen since the Iron Wars, the Ninth Mystery, called Technology, has survived only among society's outcasts until a young man born without magic and a priest who is a catalyst of magical energy form an alliance that shakes their complacent and stagnant world. The authors of the "Dragonlance" series again demonstrate their talent for vivid world-crafting and strong characterization in a novel that will appeal to fans of epic fantasy. Recommended. JC

Great series...horrible ebook.
By Rebekah B.
Okay, this review isn't entirely for the book itself. If it were I would easily give it more stars because the Darksword trilogy, just like the Dragonlance series, was a huge part of my childhood and still reads well today. No, this review must unfortunately reflect the Kindle edition of this book which is, sad to say, absolutely atrocious.

There are just way, way too many typos...and most of them make absolutely no sense. The adaptation to ebook is truly horrible. Is a little proofreading too much to ask? I mean, at least learn to properly use spell check or something. These need to be edited and reissued immediately, because to ask readers to pay $7.99 for an inferior, defective product is just insulting.

I highly recommend picking up the Darksword series in print (preferably an older printing through a used bookstore because I have zero confidence in any new editions based on this execrable ebook). It's a very good story if you can get a better version.

The Unlikely Duo Of Fantasy Forge The Improbable Pairing Of Another
By AliGhaemi
Believing the unbelievable and suspending disbelief are par for the course with the fantasy genre of books. That witches and goblins, dragons and unicorn or sky and netherworld all appear and disappear in books like The Darksword Trilogy is a given. We, the fans, expect it.

The same courtesy cannot be extended to poor character development and even poorer logical outcomes. That is Forging The Darksword's failure.

To be clear and upfront, the book is a great read and has all the elements one expects from the sub-genre of books and, more importantly from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, the authors of the unsurpassable Dragon Wing (The Death Gate Cycle, Book 1) series.

In a land where magic reigns and death is defined as a lack of these powers, the interplay of church and state, magic and technology and good and evil swirls into an unexpected set of events that quickly seem to spin out of control. The bishop connives, the young prince is sent away to die and the sorceress is not the mother many think she is. This is where one finds a catalyst acting beyond his belief or capability, a dark magus who hears and knows everything not only failing to do so, but also not heeding warnings and a good country boy following a bad, strange one. So, what gives? A still readable book that - despite all the action - is really setting the groundwork for its follow-up.

Forging the Darksword.
By mwarmin1
The world of Merilon is one where magic is life -- individuals are born into their station and rank in life according to their magical abilites. However, more and more, Dead babies (babies lacking magic) are being born to the nobility. They are left to the Deathwatch, to leave this world they were not supposed to be born into; yet, Dead babies are hidden by grieving parents, or smuggled away, and are raised in the world ...
This is the story of the intelligent but tormented Catalyst Saryon, the outcast Dead murderer Joram, the lovable trickster Simkin, the bumpkin Mosiah, and the greedy and deceptive Bishop Vanya. Sent away because of an infraction against the Church seventeen years prior, the Catalyst Saryon must locate and turn in the murderer Joram. This quest takes him from a small farming village, to the dread Camp of the Technologists, science being the forbidden Ninth Mystery of the world. Drawn instantly to Joram, Saryon and he create the Darksword, a weapon with the power to drain an individual of all magic, with which one can rule the world.
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, authors of novels in the popular Dragonlance saga, have written another excellent mind-consuming novel. I have read this work many times, and never tire of it's page-turning suspense! This is the first of four Darksword books. Originally written as a trilogy, a fourth book was brought out because so many people wanted to know "what happened next."
"What they do not understand, they fear. What they fear, they destroy."

Surprise!

Spock turned as the transporter effect released them, with some thought of how to hustle the Captain off to bed, not too obviously.

But Kirk was saying, "You won't forget that lullaby you just composed, will you, Uhura? It was a smash--not only with little Mori. I think you just lulled another planet right into the Federation. His grandparents are very influential, you know."

Uhura stepped down from the transporter, pleased. "I can't say I was thinking of that, Captain. Just of a very bright, very brave little boy who said that he wasn't lonely all that time on the wrecked ship when his parents were in a coma. He did seem to enjoy that belated birthday party, but still there was a loneliness about him."

Kirk smiled as they moved through the corridor to the turbo-lift. "Yes, there's something special about your very own party . . ." For a moment he was silent, and Spock stepped in with a voice command to the turbo-lift. It shot them to the level of officers' quarters with suitable alacrity. The Captain had very nearly been killed this day on what should have been a relatively routine rescue of the boy and his parents from a damaged ship. And Kirk had been under such stress for so long that it was a source of amazement to Spock how he kept on his feet, let alone took such obvious delight in the little boy, the impromptu party, the lullaby. Although it had to be admitted that the little boy was rather special, perhaps quite a lot like James Kirk had been . . .

They stepped out of the lift. "You make a terrific mother, Uhura," Kirk said.

She turned with a lift of eyebrow that was almost Vulcan. "Indeed? Thank you, Captain. But then, I always am. The ship is just full of little boys."

Kirk did a small double-take as she vanished through the door of her quarters, a "Good night, gentlemen" floating sweetly after her. Spock was not quite sure whether he heard correctly, "Sleep tight." It did not seem quite logical nor, if the Captain's expression was any indication, quite safe.

"When is her birthday?" Kirk muttered. "I think the traditional spanking might be in order."

Spock raised an eyebrow. "Fascinating custom, Captain. Do you really want to inaugurate it among the command crew of the Enterprise?"

Kirk shot him a look of mischief, with just a touch of speculation on whether the Vulcan implied that someone might try to inaugurate it on the Captain of the Enterprise.

"No," Kirk said firmly, in answer, or in rejection of the speculation. "But--" he looked back at Uhura's door, "there's no law against being sorely tempted."

"Indeed," Spock said blandly, and collected a small double-take himself.

Kirk paused beside his door, his mind visibly shifting to his ship. "I think I'll just check the bridge. It's a quiet night, but--" There was that look in his eye as when there was some odd mood among the crew or an engine running imperceptibly rough, some anomaly waiting to make its presence felt. Spock knew the look--and the feeling. He'd had a touch of it himself today, but it was doubtless only from the kind of day they had had. He could tell himself that and dismiss it with logic, but the Human could not.

"Jim, would you mind taking a look at my last move in our chess game? I'll take a turn around the bridge."

Kirk gave him the long-suffering look of being coddled too transparently. "Mother's little helper," he said with the look of a self-satisfied morgril.

"I trust you will find the move helpful Captain," Spock said in his best Vulcan manner.

"Mate in three moves," Kirk challenged.

"Two," Spock said innocently, and Kirk began to look worried. He laughed, with the look of giving in gracefully.

"All right, Spock. You hooked me. Sure you wouldn't like to tuck me in?"

Spock allowed himself to brighten visibly. "Quite a logical suggestion, I believe." He inclined an eyebrow toward Kirk's door. "Mother's little helper," he said helpfully.

"I'd just like to see you try it . . . No, belay that," Kirk said hastily. "I'm going, already. Before you decide to sing me a lullaby. Good night, Spock."

Spock resisted the temptation. It would ruin his reputation for Vulcan decorum--which was none too secure with this particular Human, in any case---to say, "Sleep tight." Besides, Kirk looked as if he had read the thought without benefit of telepathy. "Good night, Jim," Spock said.

Spock watched the Captain go through the door. Vulcan decorum might have suffered, but Vulcan discipline had made it through one more time of seeing that man go through this door after a day on which he had very nearly died. They both knew that, too.

Spock headed for the bridge. It had been too early to wish James Kirk happy birthday, and Spock was not quite certain that the Captain had fully realized that tomorrow was his birthday. But Kirk would discover, eventually, that Spock's last chess move was a special birthday present, planned for weeks for this night, and made this morning in the chess alcove which had been Spock's present to Kirk on his last birthday. The snap-in bulkhead doors had turned a little-needed access corridor between their quarters into a private sanctum-sanctorum where they kept their game-of-games. Their bathroom doors opened onto it, and the Captain of the Enterprise had taken to the custom wholeheartedly, finding it a convenient challenge to working out a move or two between showering and shaving.

But when Spock eased in stealthily after a late tour of the ship, Kirk had not made an answering move. Small wonder. Spock had made a move which a galactic grand master might not answer in a week.

Spock went contentedly to bed. That would occupy Kirk's worry circuits for the better part of a day. However, Kirk would see through it, if Spock knew his Kirk. And he did.

Kirk strolled onto the bridge the next morning, a bit late--some 47.234 minutes--looking a little sheepish, a little lazy, a little expectant, probably not quite certain whetber he had rolled over and gone back to sleep after the soft computer call.

Was it Spock's fault if there had needed to be a certain adjustment to the computer, and he had made it at a certain moment in a certain way with a certain predictable but unavoidable result?

There were routine morning greetings from the day-shift bridge crew--except Uhura, who had assigned a relief for an hour, and Sulu, who had excused himself on some errand in the botany lab, leaving the navigator to cover. Spock presented status reports on a clipboard display, showing all quiet.

"Good morning, Captain. You appear rested."

Kirk shot him a small look of wondering whether he was being deviled. "Yes, Mr. Spock. I gather it's been a slow morning at the store."

"Indeed, Captain."

Kirk sat down to dictate the Captain's log. His voice was just an imperceptible fraction off as he said the stardate, Spock perceived. No one had wished Kirk happy birthday.

The navigator flinched, not so imperceptibly, at the date, and Kirk caught it. Plainly, someone had forgotten. Kirk settled his shoulders and dictated the log in the voice of the Starship Captain. But once he glanced up toward Spock's station. He would know that the Vulcan would not forget, but he was Human enough to be a little hurt if others had. And Uhura had not been wrong. There was a certain element of the little boy--very prevalent among Humans, of course, but rather more evident in the Captain at times, since he permitted it to show through.

A second book of new voyages
By Shawn Weaver
The second collection of Star Trek short stories is much weaker than the first, published the previous year. This may be because the editors had already culled the best of the fanzine material for the first book. It also may be because the editors and publisher, happy with the success of the first book, took more chances with the second. Either way, this outing was not as successful, and was not repeated. There are some items of interest here.
The first story is written by Nichelle Nichols, better known as Uhura. Titled "Surprise," the story is minor trifle about Uhura and other crew members attempting to throw Captain Kirk a surprise birthday party. The characters are not well portrayed here, although a certain camaraderie among the crew is observed.
The second story is "Snake Pit!" by Connie Faddis, and focuses on Christine Chapel being thrown into a situation (involving a snake pit, of course) where she must rescue an unconcious Captain Kirk from poisonous snakes on a hostile planet. The story itself is interesting, but involves Chapel acting significantly out of character. Another character acting in this position would have made for a more believable story.
"The Patient Parasites" by Russell Bates, who wrote on of the animated episodes, is a script that was turned down for that series, but makes for an interesting study on what a TV script looks like. The story itself works as well, involving an encounter with a machine built by an alien race, with a technology far beyond our own. It is unfortunate that the story echoes many similar ones in the original TV show, but there is some new ground here.
"In the Maze" by Jennifer Guttridge (also represented in the first collection) involves a sighting of a castle on a world where such technology should not exist. While investigating, Kirk, Spock and McCoy enter the door only to be transported to another place entirely, where Kirk is held captive and Spock and McCoy undergo a series of trials that seem designed to ellicit a response. The resolution, as with Guttridge's story in the first book, involves contact with a very alien species.
"Cave-In" by Jane Peyton is an interesting prose piece of dialogue between Spock and another character (McCoy?) while trapped together after a cave-in (of course). The piece is short, and not particularly shocking, but the form is an interesting departure for Star Trek and may interest readers on that count.
"Marginal Existence" by Connie Faddis is a quite short story about a planet where the Enterprise crew find a number of "sleepers," hooked up to large numbers of IV tubes (a bit outdated there) which continually pump drugs into them. The real science here is very lacking, but the idea proposed is an interesting one, about a society that becomes dependent on such injections.
"The Procrustean Petard" by Marshak and Culbreath is another of their riffs on the "alpha male" theme, this time as the Enterprise comes into contact with a society where the dominant (alpha) male is given an extra male chromosome, and the other crew members are sex-changed. So, Kirk and McCoy become women, while Uhura becomes a man, for instance. This story takes a look at male and female roles in a way that often seemed important in the 1970s, but seems awfully dated now. Like much of these authors' work.
"The Sleeping God" by Jesco von Puttkamer is an interesting story by an actual NASA rocket scientist, and onetime German science fiction writer, his first fiction work in English. The plot involves a mutant, with vast mental powers, revived from suspended animation to tackle a problem far too big for a normal starship, and thus quite a problem indeed, involving a sentient computer from another plane of existence, attempting to take over this plane. Again, this may be Star Trek's (or at least Gene Roddenberry's) favorite plot, but it is handled well here, and this is certainly the volume's best story, even if it actually uses the Enterprise crew only in a limited way.
Also included are two poems, "Elegy for Charlie" and "Soliloquy." The book is interesting, but again, not as good as the first.

Even more "unprofessional" than the first one
By Mikael Kuoppala
Here is information about each of the stories in the order they were on the anthology, since they don't really have anything to do with each other. I've added my own individual rating of 1 to 5 stars, and a comment on each of the stories.
SURPRISE!
Written by: Nichelle Nichols, with Sondra Marshak & Myrna Culbreath
Rating: * */ * * * * *
A fun little story about Kirk's birthday, that doesn't really offer anything interesting.
SNAKE PIT
Written by: Connie Faddis
Rating: * / * * * * *
A plotless character story with extremely bad characterization. Need I say more?
THE PATIENT PARASITES
Written by: Russel Bates
Rating: * / * * * * *
An original script for the animated star trek series, that was turned down with a good reason. The writer stated in his introduction that the reasons behind the rejections didn't concern the quality of the story, but, in my opinion, they should have.
The plot is 100 per cent scince fiction cliché, and doesn't contain any original, thought provoking, or entertaining aspects. It was hard to believe the writer was part of the team behind "How Sharper Than A Serpent's Tooth", one of the very best episodes of the animated series that earned an Emmy for the show.
IN THE MAZE
Written by: Jennifer Guttridge
Rating: * */ * * * * *
Good characterization doesn't save this predictable and utterly unoriginal piece of writing
CAVE-IN
Written by: Jane Payton
Rating: */ * * * * *
A semi-artistic little "talking heads" dialoque that anyone could write.
MARGINAL EXISTANCE
Written by: Connie Faddis
Rating: */ * * * * *
Based on a very promising concept, but is executed poorly.
THE PROCRUSTEAN PETARD
Written by: Sondra Marshak & Myrna Culbreath
Rating: */ * * * * *
Imagine Spock with a YY-chromosome syndrome, and the rest of the crew of the Enterprise undergoing a sex-change operation.
A bad fan fiction story attempting to be a parody?
Unfortunately it's possibly the worst ever officially published star trek story.
It's a story that has a strong message: Women are weak, men are intelligent and strong. I couldn't believe it was written in the 20th century by two women. All female-turned-male officers notice that they are many times better than they were before, and the male-turned-female officers notice that they can't do anything anymore, repeating again and again that women shouldn't have important positions in starfleet.
The plot is simplistic, and the reader knows the solution to the problem long before the characters do.
Definitely outdated by now, if it wasn't then.
THE SLEEPING GOD
Written by: Jesco Von Puttkamer
Rating: * */ * * * * *
An ambtious story stumbles miserably on horrible characterization, bad pacing and unintended comedy.
ELEGY FOR CHARLIE
Written by: Antonia Vallario
Rating: */ * * * * *
A bad poem.
SOLILOGUY
Written by: Marguerite B. Thompson
Rating: */ * * * * *
A bad poem.
I'll have to mention that there was a truly good epiloque in the end by Nichelle Nichols, wich made the anthology look much more dignified than the stories permit.

Old school terror
By N. P. Stathoulopoulos
A childhood favorite, this entry in the famous series has not been re-released yet. One of the more memorable, hopefully it will see the light of day again for the kiddies. (Not sure what criteria they use for the reprinting of the older titles).

Either way, glad to see that computers and video games have not totally killed the very simple pleasure these books held---sitting down, alone, with a book in your hand as a learning tool and as a spark for a young imagination. While not as challenging in a literary sense as other material, it provided something else in the personalization of the story through choices made in its reading.

This was one of the better early entries in this series. Essentially the exploration of a haunted house, it had more of the wonderful illustrations by Paul Granger, who did most of the early titles. For a young child, this was spooky---a mysterious house, a surly, ugly groundskeeper, a creepy old woman in a rocking chair, an evil black cat, and other elements combined to make this timeless. Always loved the mysterious old lady you randomly came across in the haunted mansion...

The printed page and the well-placed illustration have been more than enough to fuel an imagination for years and years; glad to see it hasn't completely died yet.

One of the genre's best
By A Customer
Fans of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series will want to pick this one up if they ever see it in libraries or used bookstores. This is the series in its early prime, with originator Edward Packard at the helm. He creates a plausible haunted house with a somewhat original cat-and-mouse theme, some genuine terror for kids, and a fine atmosphere.

Empowering and fascinating journey for young readers.
By A Customer
As a sixth grade teacher, I rarely see my students as fired up to read a novel as they are about the Choose Your Own Adventure series, especially The Mystery of Chimney Rock. They beg me to read to them and often fight over what few copies I have. Kids love to feel like they are in charge of something important and exciting, especially at the middle school age. The Mystery of Chimney Rock is consistent and doesn't contradict itself no matter how your story comes out. The circumstances the reader chooses dictate the action, not the author's manipulating the characters to influence the story. Suspenseful and nailbiting! Students feel genuinely involved and downright nervous as to whether they will live or die in the book.

The Return of the Native (Bantam Classics), by Thomas Hardy

This fine novel sets in opposition two of Thomas Hardy’s most unforgettable creations: his heroine, the sensuous, free-spirited Eustacia Vye, and the solemn, majestic stretch of upland in Dorsetshire he called Egdon Heath. The famous opening reveals the haunting power of that dark, forbidding moor where proud Eustacia fervently awaits a clandestine meeting with her lover, Damon Wildeve. But Eustacia’s dreams of escape are not to be realized—neither Wildeve nor the returning native Clym Yeobright can bring her salvation.

Injured by forces beyond their control, Hardy’s characters struggle vainly in the net of destiny. In the end, only the face of the lonely heath remains untouched by fate in this masterpiece of tragic passion, a tale that perfectly epitomizes the author’s own unique and melancholy genius.

Amazing
By Pamela E. Long
The CD audio book of the Return of the Native actually deserves to be described as amazing. The lyrical prose of Hardy, combines with the incomparable voice and performance of Alan Rickman, to make this a genuine treasure.

Rickman, in his limited interviews, has repeatedly referred to himself as an instrument. In this product, the only part of that instrument he could utilize was his voice. It is more than enough: the pictures and action spring vividly to life. Listening to his performance is sheer joy, and it rapidly makes you realize how little his capability has been tapped by film - where the whole "instrument" is utilized.

I would give this product the highest recommendation.

What a Delight
By Aradia
First, I must confess to being an avid Alan Rickman admirer. The man could read the local phone book and I'd gladly pay to hear it. Thusly, when I found he had done an unabridged set of audio tapes of one of my favorite books -- "The Return of the Native" -- I was thrilled.
"The Return of the Native" is a compelling and beautifully written story. I especially like the way Hardy makes Egdon Heath itself as much a character in the story as the human denizens of the area, breathing life into it through his wonderful word pictures and his special talent for creating moods. Hardy's vivid descriptions and excellent character development make this an enchanting adventure.
Add to this the velvet-smooth voice of Rickman, and you have a treat for the imagination and the ears.
Rickman gives each of the characters his (or her) own separate voice, and manages to do so without forgetting how each should sound. How he kept it straight, I'll never know (I, myself, record books on tape for an educational company and know how complicated that can be!)...what with the many inhabitants of Egdon Heath he had to work with...but, he did. Rickman also actually sang the songs from the book (and not badly, either), adding another dimension.
"The Return of the Native" (unabridged) is a must for anyone who loves good literature on tape, and for anyone who is a fan of Alan Rickman. This is a stunning production and well worth the investment!

Classic worth listening to
By Kindle Customer
This is the third time I've listened to this audio book, something I have never done before. I must admit, it gets better ever time. The description of the characters is incredible - when have you read a whole chapter describing an individual? Or the landscape? Certainly way more verbose than modern style, but the observations stand the test of time, and paint pictures that linger. None of the characters is flawless, and the errors of omission in their acts toward each other results in no end of misery. But the view of life in another time, with all its physical differences and all its emotional similarities to ours is intrigueing. And Rickman is fabulous, capturing accents and personalities that reading myself in my cozy chair in Phoenix Arizona would never have known.

DRASTIC DRAGON OF DRACO, TEXAS

Determined to become an author of western penny dreadful novels like her idol, Ned Buntline, a young San Francisco newspaper editor christens herself Valentine Lovelace (after a floozie acquaintance of her father’s) and heads east for the Wild West.
She finds it in spades in the Texas Big Bend when she is kidnapped from a mule train by Comanches and ends up the guest of a ruthless comanchero, a sort of wild west warlord, after the Comanches are distracted by a. . .dragon?
Fort Draco, as the comanchero fort is known, is as full of intrigue and nighttime carryings-on as a modern day romantic novel, but Frank Drake, the owner, is no hero. If Valentine wants to save herself and the less-guilty if not entirely innocent folks who live there, she must defeat heat stroke, gunslingers, a couple of fake rainmakers and their camel, hostile Indians, the voice haunting her dreams (not in a good way) and a dragon who not only is gobbling all the livestock and transportation in the area but is guarding the only water hole in fifty miles of drought-ridden desert. And she must do it all while taking good notes, of course.
This is a western but not as we know it and a fantasy set where we’re not used to it.

A thoroughly entertaining read
By Imagine A Book SF
Combining westerns and dragons had never crossed my mind, but when I saw the premise, I was immediately hooked.

The main character is an intelligent woman from San Francisco, or in Old West parlance, a spunky gal with lots of gumption.

Her aspiration is to write dime novels so she embarks on a journey across the southwest to discover locales and find character ideas. Along the way she encounters mule trains, wild Indians, comancheros, cavalry officers, grifters, a camel and, of course, a dragon.

The story moves along at a brisk pace, skillfully introducing colorful characters and plot twists which keep you turning the pages long into the night.

A thoroughly entertaining read. If you like fantasy, westerns, dragons, or just enjoy a good tale, you will enjoy this book.

From AudioFile
With smooth efficiency, David Stuart reads this abridgment of Robert Crais's first novel, the Anthony and Macavity Award-winning mystery that introduced Private Investigator Elvis Cole. Stuart reads with a syncopated hesitation that confers a Hollywood sullenness but misses the "noir" edge of Crais's writing. Elvis Cole--the sensitive and wisecracking collector of Disneyana--and his heavy-artillery partner, Joe Pike, traipse through the seamier streets of Los Angeles, infiltrate high-society Hollywood, and cross the line with the Latino drug trade in search of an errant husband and a missing boy. The adventure and the characters of this novel are exciting and totally satisfying. S.E.S. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

The First of a Great Series!
By Roz Levine
The Monkey's Raincoat, grabs you from the first chapter, puts you on the edge of your seat and keeps you there to the climactic end of the book. Meet Elvis Cole, Viet Nam vet, ex-security guard turned private investigator. He's a hard boiled, wise-cracking detective who gives Mike Hammer and Sam Spade a run for their money. The case begins as Ellen Lang hires Elvis to find her missing husband, Hollywood agent, Mort, who's taken their son and disappeared. Unfortunately, the case is a bit more complicated than just a simple missing person. Mort is soon found shot dead in his car, there's no sign of the son and Ellen is missing too. Elvis Cole is now on a mission to find mother and son and it involves missing drugs and some pretty frightening bad guys. Robert Crais has created a great mystery with a tight plot, full of terrific, interesting characters. His writing is crisp and sharp with witty and irreverent dialogue and action packed scenes. This is a fast paced, page turner that won't let you down. Mr. Crais deserved all the nominations and awards this book won.

Introducing Jiminy Cricket
By Marc Ruby™
Possibly one of the most delightful moments for a crabby old reader and reviewer of mystery stories is to discover an excellent author whom he has somehow missed. Of course, in this case it is also a bit embarrassing. Robert Crais is the author of, among other things, 'L.A. Requiem,' indicating that this reviewer is not only unobservant, but a bit stubborn as well. I am not always a fan of the hard-boiled detective/hero genre, and most of those I don't like seem to live around Los Angeles.
Deciding to break with a long tradition (for me), I ordered this book, the first in the Elvis Cole series, for my trial dip. I was ill prepared for a small but potent bombshell that won its author several awards and nominations. Gasping for breath, I settled in for an unexpectedly wild and enjoyable ride.
Elvis Cole is the anti-detective incarnate. In an office filled with Disney memorabilia, shared with an invisible partner, Cole meets with new client Ellen Lang and her best friend Janet Simon. The problem - Ellen's husband Mort and her son Perry have disappeared. Ellen is a difficult client, but Mort definitely was not a perfect husband, and Cole proceeds on the assumption that this is a straightforward parental snatch and run.
Cole discovers Mort's girlfriend is missing as well, and that his business partners in the film business are a bit sleazy, but he is caught by surprise when this suddenly becomes a murder case. The badness mounts as Cole finds his clues lead from film moguls to the top of the narcotics trade. Soon Cole, on a grim search for the boy, is having his strings pulled by people who would just as soon kill him as look at him. With unusual adeptness, the detective switches from Jiminy Cricket quotes to guns and fists. Joined by his partner, Elvis Cole goes to war.
The success of this genre of detective fiction rises and falls on the quality of main characters. Between John MacDonald, Raymond Chandler, Robert Parker, etc., etc., original plots are hard to come by. So a unique character like the wisecracking, 1966 Corvette driving Elvis Cole is too precious to waste. If you are looking to breathe some fresh air on your musty old mystery shelves, don't even consider passing this one by.

A Great Start!
By Richard F.
I was intrigued by the reviews of "LA Requiem" and, since I live in SoCal, thought I might be interested in Robert Crais' work. I selected "The Monkey's Raincoat" because it was his first novel, and the reviews were mixed. I was pleasantly suprised by his effort. What this book has done, besides entertain me for a few evenings, is to whet my appetite for the rest of the Elvis Cole series. As a matter of fact, I just finished ordering all of Mr. Crais' books.
