Old favorite never disappoints

I just saw the movie version of Shadow Riders again and thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie had plot differences from the book, but still remained a good yarn. The differences led me to reread the original book and It was excellent, too. Now those are Westerns! (No Cowboys and Indians, just Cowboys and Outlaws) I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Lyrical and poetically beautiful in its simplicity

The first part in "The Awakening Land" trilogy, "The Trees" chronicles the settling of the Ohio wilderness in the early days of the Republic. With an ear toward authenticity, Conrad Richter has seamlessly mixed history with fiction by introducing realistic characters who tamed Ohio when it was the "West." The story is simple, but beautifully told as Richter introduces the Luckett family, especially eldest daughter Sayward. The Lucketts claim the land and eke out a living among a howling wilderness as Sayward becomes the true head of the family. Richter is to be congratulated for introducing a realisitically strong character who, representing nameless and countless pioneer women, is a true hero. Read it for history or read it for fiction, it will touch you and teach you.

Overzealous publisher

Being intimately familiar with the original publication of this trilogy, I can say with utmost disdain that whoever was responsible for taking the liberties of rewriting what was very nearly perfection must have a great fondness for soap operas and should stick with romance novels instead. Not only are there additional passages inserted that were never written by Conrad Richter, there are also altered meanings of existing passages that totally change the flavor and the original intent. There are so many instances in all three volumes that I don't even know where to begin with examples. This is by far the most appalling reprint of an award-winning piece of historical fiction I have ever witnessed. You would do better to find a used copy from the original publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.

This was the 5th time I have read this book. Loved the story of Sayward and the marvelous descriptions of early America. My ancestors settled in Ohio in early 1800's and set up trading posts. As a longtime Ohioan, this story appealed to my familial history.

Painfully thought provoking...intense.

This is a MUST READ for current and future therapists.

An End to Innocence is for those who love to ask "why", the introspective, and anyone who wants to grow. If you are looking for a feel good read, wanting to escape reality in some way, or are looking for some sort of validation in relation to either, this may not be the best read for you.

An End to Innocence encouraged me to look within, and ironically, in some ways, to stop looking within (at least not so hard).

Realizing that there is no inherent meaning in life, and that it must be created on your own, is both lonely and scary, but enlightening beyond any words I could write here.

This was my #1 fave book by Saul! (Old School Fan)

Except for Suffer the Children & Punish the Sinners, I have read the majority of Saul's books. However, after Blackstone Creek Crossing, a major disappointment, I decided maybe I need to take a break or move onto to other authors for a while. I will eventually read his newer books but after reading his reviews here, I thought I would do a better job of contributing my own perspective for new readers.

Comes the Blind Fury was my 1st at age 13...awesome, couldn't put it down, emotional, creepy, sexual undertones, full of revenge, no happy endings here, but loved it! As a starter Saul book, this book definitely will strike a chord with younger readers.

The Unloved was my 2nd, a year later, and this still remains my favorite! I have read it three times! As a novel, it is definitely longer so most readers will feel that it drags but, personally, I couldn't put it down. I also think this novel is more adult and reminds me a lot of V.C. Andrew's Flower's in the Attic Series (by the way, her new books suck but this is by far her 1st and most original series...I recommend it as a read). Back to the point..both Flowers and Unloved have strong characters, a good plotline and story setting, climatic ending, a haunting family history which, in turn, leads to nightmarish consequences. In Unloved, Saul did a good job of isolating his characters, especially the devastating Marguerite Devereaux. Though she is the villain you can't help but feel saddened by the events that contributed to her madness. There is definitely a big body count in this book and it all leads to a frightening revelation for the conclusion followed by the character's demise and a chilling but good closure in the epilogue.

My third favorite I read at age 15 on a family vacation....Second Child...I also couldn't put this down and have read it twice. The main antagonist is just plain evil and she is only 16! You feel incredibly sorry for the good girl character Melissa. Although you know early on that Teri is the villain, her ability to manipulate and deceive all in the name of revenge and the "rich life" makes your emotions pulse for sure. This story is good also for a memorable "car accident" death scene, the ghost storyline character who is responsible for Teri's getting her last desserts, and a great closure...there is somewhat of a happy ending to this book...but then again, that epilogue is just creepy!

In this sequel to Magician: Apprentice, we begin to see the effects that the great war between worlds is having. Pug, now a slave on Kelewan, has his talent recognized, and he begins his training in the art of magic. Thomas, wearing the armor of the long dead Velheru, Ashen-Shugar, becomes one of the greatest warriors of his age, but at what cost? Both the Tsurani Empire and the Kingdom are cracking under the strain, and it is up to someone to end the war.

This book is a great sequel to Magician: Apprentice, and is even better than that book! This book is sprinkled with high sorcery, fantastic creatures, and exciting battles. If you liked the first book of this series, then you will absolutely love this book! I highly recommend these books to any (and every!) fan of fantasy literature.

It is a joy to revisit this book in my growing library of epic fantasy. Pug follows the typical orphan-becomes-hero archetype, and in doing so becomes the most powerful sorcerer in the known universe.
If you are new to epic fantasy or to Raymond Feist, this is the place to start. You will be drawn in by the cast of characters at Castle Crydee which lies on the edge of the frontier of the Kingdom of Isles. It is a world that is primitive and largely unknown. Magic here is uncommon and subtle at first, but emerges as a threat to the kingdom.

GRIPPING, RIVETING, ENTHRALLING, ENCHANTING......

Raymond E. Feist created a masterpiece. As soon as I read the first book in this epic I knew I was in trouble. I was so enchanted by Magician: Master that I read it all in less than one day. I couldn't put it down. I totally recommend this book if you love Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. It reads faster than Lord of the Rings and keeps you on the edge of your seat. AWESOME!!!!!

Great feel for locale

Description of the old California desert is stunning. Ditto old L.A. Great feel for locale. My only complaint is the lead is one of those John Wayne guys who shows no real personality. He's so strong and honest and upright I almost found myself rooting for the villains. But there is so much good in the book and I recommend it.

Poor formatting on Kindle

The Kindle version removes the line numbers and is poorly formatted. It's basically useless for any academic use. This is especially disappointing since the print version's preview looks very well formatted while the Kindle preview does not show the actual text of the play.
