Good resource, a little challenging to read
By Freda Ingram
I'm in the process of reading this book now and although I agree with much of what the author says, it's difficult to get through. I'm having a difficult time following along because, in my opinion, the flow is off. It reads much like a textbook (college students will know what I mean here). I was expecting a simplier layout and I'm having to go back and forth to make connections. I'm going to keep reading because I believe these transactions can cause difficulties in one's life and it's important to learn how "not" to play the games. IF you purchase, be ready to feel like you are back in school.

Still a good read!
By M Sloan
For those who are working on being mindful of their own dynamic and how to be more authentic. I found this book helpful in reminding me that much of interaction with others is largely reactionary and learned response and that by intentionally being more present and by recognizing my attitude helps me to interact on a better level. This book offers guidelines to more effective communication.

Getting Past the Superficial
By Brian Petula
This book explains the psychological games people play that keep them "safe" but also from experiencing a much richer life and intimacy. Check out this book and move beyond the superficial exchanges like - "Hi, how are you?/Fine, how about you?"

QB VII - Another great Leon Uris book
By Jean E. Terry
This is another great Leon Uris book. I'm not a heavy duty reader, but it is really noticeable how excellent his writing is in comparison to many other writers. It spoils you for books that are pretty average in writing skills. I am actually not through with this but almost. You learn a lot about the two main characters and grow to like them and hope that there is a solution in the end that allows them both to be guiltless. It is a good educational book for those who do not know much about the holocaust and I would hope they would be taught about it in school. I have read many autobiographies and biographies about the holocaust and I never cease to be amazed that the Germans were able to do such horrendous things. Either do them or look the other way. You think of the western world as civilized. But we should be wary as it can happen again and is happening as we speak with the rise of Muslim extremism, etc. Also, we in the US should be careful that with all the political polarization that is happening we do not let the powers that be become too powerful. I put some violence because it describes what is done to the Jewish victims by the German and other doctors in the camps during the war. It could be graphic though as it is hard to read about this.

Impossible to put down
By A Customer
This was the first Uris novel I ever read and is probably the most enjoyable book I have read by him.The book tells the story of how a Polish doctor Adam Kelno sues American author Abraham Cady after he is named as having being involved in heinous warcrimes during the holocaust. The real triumph of the novel is that Uris puts a human face on the evil of nazism and shows how anti-semitism can corrupt a basically sound man to such an extent. The novel is gripping from start to finish and part of its appeal is you are never sure what twist awaits around the corner.Sheer genius, a literary talent at his most dynamic and brilliant best.

This book is very disturbing to read since it deals with the atrocities performed on Jews, Poles ,Gypsies, and many other ethnicities during WWII under Hitler's regime. It is a must-read for all people to question of themselves 'what would I do under those circumstances?' Then ask of yourself 'what can I do to make a difference in the world we live today?'

From Publishers Weekly
Feist, author of the Riftwar Trilogy, and Wurts, whose fantasy novels include Sorcerer's Legacy and Stormwarden, have combined their skills to produce this absorbing saga. Mara is taking her final religious vows when a messenger interrupts the ceremony to report the deaths in battle of her father and brother. Now Ruling Lady of the Acoma, the teenager must rally its depleted forces against many enemies, particularly Lord Jingu of the Minwanabi, who sent her menfolk to their demise. Hampered though she is by the rigid traditions of her Oriental society, Mara replenishes her army with the masterless grey warriors and skillfully reaches a bargain with the cho-ja, insectoid aliens. Her most dangerous gambit is a political marriage to cement an alliance. Deprived of overt status, she finds it difficult to manipulate her brutish but cunning husband. This full-bodied dynastic fantasy has the sweep and drama of a good historical novel about an exotic time and place.

This is the start of a great series
By Travis Cottreau
Daughter of the Empire and the two books that follow are a must for any Raymond Feist fan. It matches the rift war saga in enjoyability and surpases anything else that Feist has worked on. I haven't read any Janny Wurts stuff, so I don't know how it compares.
The book is almost historical fiction, except the events take place in a completely ficticious asian style world. There are enough fantastical elements (the black ones and the Cho-ja) to keep fantasy enthousiasts entertained, but this goes far beyond run of the mill fantasy novels. The writing moves along at a great pace, it starts fast and never stops. The characters are almost always cool and fun to read about, there are seldom characters who you are sorry to get back to when their plot line rotates back again (especially the spy master, I loved that guy).
If you've read these books and are looking for something along similar lines, you'll almost certainly be entertained by Sean Russell's "Initiate Brother" and "Gatherer of Clouds" which are very similar and just as fun to read.

A great look at Feist's world of Kelewan.
By A Customer
I am a great fan of Raymond E. Feist, and have read all of his books numerous times. In fact, most of the books are so worn out that the pages are falling out. The Empire trilogy is almost as good or better than the Riftwar Saga. It explores the strange culture of Kelewan touched on in Magician:Master and a little in Silverthorn.
Lady Mara is an intriguing character, and is extremely loveable. She is one of the greatest fantasy characters I have ever encountered. Despite the length of the books in this series, it is impossible to put them down. The intrigue and trials in the "Great Game" are unmatched in any other book that I have read. If you are a fan of Eddings, Jordan, McCaffery, or any other fantasy author, READ THIS SERIES, you won't be disappointed.

Wurts shows her stuff based on Feist's Kelewan world
By Phome
"Daughter of the Empire" is a powerful story of Mara of the Acoma who, upon the murder of her father and brother by an sinister plot of the family's arch-enemy, is left as the only remaining heir of the Acoma estate. In a world where life has no meaning, so long as it is forfeited via subtle political strokes through great Game, Mara needs every scrap of her wits, stubborness and determination to survive and continue the Acoma line.
In this book and the rest of the series, the innocent girl from convent life becomes a powerful and dangerous Player. Determined to be unmoved by her unfortunate position, Mara's keen political sense ensures her survival. Her resolve, persistance and imagination (unusual for the ever traditionally minded Tsurani) propels her family from what is, at best, an uncertain position to one of the most powerful in the world. BUT, not without paying a price. Mara must learn that she is, first and foremost, human, before she is a player.
Based on Feist's Kelewan world, the "aliens" as created in the "Magician" series, Wurts adds her talent for detailed plot, intrigue and human emotion to Feist's imaginative series, to create one of the most powerful stories in fantasy today.
For those who've read the "Magician" series, you will be excited to recognise a number of characters and learn to understand what drives the "aliens". For Wurts fans - this book will not disappoint you - it has every speck of Wurts-ness that make her other series so darn good.
In one word: "unputdownable".

Great book...terrible ending
By A Customer
I really liked this book alot. The plot was original and the human themes were compelling...heroism, adventure and achievement through understanding the laws of nature (in this case, those laws being a bit different, than usual). I would have given this book 5 stars if the author had left off 10-15 pages before the end, where he cheapens and weakens his efforts by attempting to explain, "The Practice Effect" as an artificially induced phenomena. Also, there is a lead in for a sequel that never happened...

Fantastic departure from hard-core Sci-Fi
By A Customer
I've read everything Brin has published. He weaves a very real and believable story, usually based upon real science, or real theory. This book was obviously a departure into fantasy. I found The Practic Effect to be a fun light-hearted Sci-Fi fantasy. It was interesting to explore the notion of, "What if physics and natures laws worked differently, somewhere else?" It was, of course, written very well, in Brin's cinematic style.

From the Back Cover
A magnificent saga of American fiction, the Sacketts series is one of the greatest treasures by legendary storyteller Louis L'Amour. In The Daybreakers, L'Amour spins the tale of two brothers who couldn't be more different -- yet remain bound by their restlessness of spirit.

"RIDE WITH THE LAW, NEVER AGAINST IT".

You had to push to start a fight with Orrin Sackett, but not with his brother, Tyrel. Tye had been born to trouble, and the night he stepped between his brother and a bullet changed the course of both their lives forever. Now their trail pointed west, to Santa Fe, a frontier town on the edge of violence -- but justice had to come before putting down roots in a lawless land. Orrin took on the job of marshal, while Tye commanded fear and respect even without a badge. But when a loose end from their past turned up, one brother was forced to revert to his old ways -- if the other's dreams were to be realized....

About the Author
Our foremost storyteller of the American West, Louis L’Amour has thrilled a nation by chronicling the adventures of the brave men and women who settled the frontier. There are more than 300 million copies of his books in print around the world.

Well, what do you want, anyway??
By Catfish
I give this novel five stars, but with a sigh and a caveat. You can't compare L'Amour to anyone but authors in the Western genre, and he is head and shoulders above most of them. I have read many books in my day; some of them uplift me, some of them have changed me, some of them have made me a better person. Louis L'Amour's books will do none of these things...BUT! You will seldom find a more entertaining read. Open a L'Amour western and the action just thunders off the pages. You can almost smell the gunsmoke. His action scenes are well -written, and, in spite of what another reviewer said,

his characters are better drawn than those by most other western writers. Yes, they are fictional, and the things they do are largely fictional. L'Amour writes of a Wild West that should have been, full of bad guys but also full of plain-speaking, mountain-bred, six-shooter totin' Good Guys who are more than capable of taking care of themselves. The satisfying thing in these novels is that you just know the bad guys are going to run right up against Our Hero and boy, are they gonna pay for their misdeeds...! You can't wait for that to happen, and L'Amour delivers the goods in each and every book. This Sackett novel is probably the best of the series and is a great example of L'Amour's writing. Read this, enjoy it at the level at which it should be enjoyed, and get ready to ride the wild west with the Sackett boys!!

A 5-Star-Rating is Not High Enough for This 6th Book of the Sackett Series!
By Rebecca Stewart
"The Daybreakers" is a book about Jubal Sackett's children, all boys, five of them, and their move to the southwest from Tennessee. Jubal is (assumed) dead, leaving his once-beautiful young Natchez Sun Princess bride and his five sons in East Tennessee, where life for them is a bare existence. The Sackett boys were in a feud with the Higgins' family for two decades, killing nineteen of them in self-defense. It was the last Higgins, Long Higgins, that Tyrel was forced to kill after Long attempted to murder Orrin, at his wedding ceremony. Long got the bride instead of the groom but then turned his gun to kill Tyrel. Tyrel then left Tennessee with his mother's blessing, rather than be kept in jail until a judge would arrive to determine the shooting was in self-defense, which it truly was. While this story is uplifting in many ways if you love the tough Sackett boys/men, it also has a sad undercurrent, that you will only understand by reading the book for yourself.

I very highly recommend you read the entire series as well as all of Louis L'Amour's books! His books are well written and for the entertainment of both men and women!

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

From the icy blast of reveille through the sweet release of sleep, Ivan Denisovich endures.  A common carpenter, he is one of millions viciously imprisoned for countless years on baseless charges, sentenced to the waking nightmares of the Soviet work camps in Siberia.  Even in the face of degrading hatred, where life is reduced to a bowl of gruel and a rare cigarette, hope and dignity prevail.  This powerful novel of fact is a scathing indictment of Communist tyranny, and an eloquent affirmation of the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review
Solzhenitsyn's first book, this economical, relentless novel is one of the most forceful artistic indictments of political oppression in the Stalin-era Soviet Union. The simply told story of a typical, grueling day of the titular character's life in a labor camp in Siberia, is a modern classic of Russian literature and quickly cemented Solzhenitsyn's international reputation upon publication in 1962. It is painfully apparent that Solzhenitsyn himself spent time in the gulags--he was imprisoned for nearly a decade as punishment for making derogatory statements about Stalin in a letter to a friend.

Review
“Cannot fail to arouse bitterness and pain in the heart of the reader. A literary and political event of the first magnitude.”
–New Statesman

“Stark . . . the story of how one falsely accused convict and his fellow prisoners survived or perished in an arctic slave labor camp after the war.”
–Time

“Both as a political tract and as a literary work, it is in the Doctor Zhivago category.”
–Washington Post

“Dramatic . . . outspoken . . . graphically detailed . . . a moving human record.”
–Library Journal

Masterpiece even at 2016

Written like a clear river flowing.
This book is about a prisoner s life in Soviet Russia. The subject may not sound mainstream or even not relevant anymore due as no more USSR. But I recommend it highly to everyone.
Hardship as well as willpower and compassion of ordinary people are described here. It will be relevant for eras to come. It will enter us into I vans world and let us feel the human condition.

A Cold Day in Hell
By Gio
"Hell" is a pre-Christian concept, adopted and adapted from the religion of Odin and Thor. In Old Norse, Hel was an underworld deity as well as a place of bleak afterlife. Hell was not an inferno, a fiery punishment for sinners, but rather an icy cold limbo. The various Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin words in the King James translation of the Bible that are translated as "Hell" chiefly have the more fundamental meaning of "the grave."

The forced labor camp for 'special' politically tainted prisoners, in which Ivan Denisovich Shukhov has spent 8 years of his 10 year sentence, is Hell at its icy worst, a kind of limbo from which no one will ever truly be released except into another kind of exile. Shukhov himself, in his conversation with his Baptist workmate Aloysha, explicitly rejects the Christian notions of Hell as punishment and Heaven as reward. That's the longest and most 'philosophical' conversation in the book, and it occurs at the very end of Ivan's emblematic "day" like every other day. This little book by Alexander Solzhenitsyn has been canonized as an exposé of the absurd brutality of Soviet Communism -- of the hellish conditions in the archipelago of labor camps that made a mockery of communist ideals -- and it certainly played that role historically. But, as the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko argues in his introduction, there's a deeper level to Ivan's experience than the mere political, and western readers have been too quick to interpret the book just as a political indictment of the unnamed Lord of Hell, Joseph Stalin. Yevtushenko also asserts that the raw language of Solzhenitsyn's writing in Russian has allusive and descriptive strengths that are scarcely conveyed in English translation. That's not hard to believe; most translations fall somewhat short, but sadly enough I doubt that I'll be learning Russian soon.

Ivan Denisovich's "will to survive" -- his stubborn defiance combined with sly subservience, his pride in his own endurance -- has a universal meaning. "Do Your worst to me, God," he seems to be saying, "but I will persist. I will survive Your capricious cruelty. I scorn Your power to degrade me for arbitrary offenses. I will outlast Your Hell if I can." At least in his first published book, Solzhenitsyn above all is proclaiming the supreme value of human life against all forces of nature, religion, and the state.

Interesting
By Stephen F. Brecht
Paints a pretty upbeat and sometimes humorous day in the life of a political prisoner in the worst part of the world serving 25 years for all the wrong reasons. One of the themes is to make the most of your situation in life regardless of the circumstances. It would have been a better read if it was broken into chapters, but still enjoyed it.
