Not one of Louis L'Amour's better stories. The character has potential, but to little effort was put into the story line for me to be able to call it an interesting, or for that matter an enjoyable read.

Finally the Duckie ending I've longed for

I absolutely love Pretty in Pink, up until the prom. Anyone watching it with me would be wise to just stop the movie at that point, so they don't have to listen to me yelling at the screen about how Duckie was robbed, Andie is an idiot, and Duckie deserved better than the ditzy blonde consultation prize. I exaggerate, but embarrassingly not by that much.

After being completely misled by the "Everything's Duckie" edition of the dvd, I found out this book of the screenplay was written before the ending was changed and therefore still has the original ending. I didn't get to see it, but at least I finally got to read it. I won't spoil, so I'll just say it's not a simple "Duckie gets the girl." This ending also brings in a lesson learned about being true to yourself.

Well, I Got What I Came For

What a bizarre time the eighties must have been! Reading this I felt like a cultural anthropologist from some far off space culture. Only when I was crammed into my tiny rocket launcher the bright, shiny utopia I was aiming for was instead replaced by an emergency crash landing on a strange, tiny strip of land where all the natives were speaking in a language that I'm sure they imagined was too hip for words and were busy obsessing over foot wear. You might think the last part is completely non-sequitur to the story but apparently the author didn't think so. One of the most important messages I've walked away from this book with is just how important, and I mean absolutely life shatteringly, balls to the walls, hang your head, make or break you important to never - EVER - wear socks with your loafers. The people back at data intelligence will be ever so pleased with the notes I'm taking.

So yes, it's not a perfect book. It gets obsessed over small details that it liked to repeat over and over again. Ok, ok we get it - Andie's mother likes PINK, when we wear loafers if we want to be cool we must never ever wear socks, Duckie has small feel in big shoes. I will admit the last one was pretty funny though. Unlike some movie novelizations this one didn't aim to be darker or more edgier than its counter part and it kept the tone quite even throughout the entirety of the plot which I'll admit was nice.

And since it seems there's a lot of hype over this I will say that yes, the book had a different ending, and yes I liked it a whole lot more. Her choosing Duckie over Blane at the end had a ring of genuine romance to it that the other movie ending never did and seemed to make more sense in how it fitted into the story line. And for that alone this book is worth reading.

I was recommending to a friend to come buy it and check out how different it was than the movie. Absolutely loved it myself, both the book and the movie, and I was horrified to see right there in the description of the book that they told the ENDING? Why would they do that??

MANY NEW STORIES, GREAT READING!

Finaly I have almost every story from the brothers Grimm. Try to watch the autobiography of them on TCM to gain a greater appreciation of how fortunate we are to have these wonderful tales. Great cultural, anthropological study of that historical time. We are so used to happy endings a la Hollywood. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girls and they live happily ever after (just like realy life, right!!??). Compared to today's story lines, some of these tales are very different, unexpected. No morals like Aesop's Fables, stories and endings can be delightfully unexpected. This makes it a wonderful comparison against what was considered a good story back in the day. Buy the book, read it and share it with all those around you who are young at heart. It is imperative that we fill our young minds with sweet readings and give them a greater appreciation of the rugged life styles and expectations of yesteryear.

About the Author
Michael Palmer, M.D., is the author of Miracle Cure, Critical Judgment, Silent Treatment, Natural Causes, Extreme Measures, Flashback, Side Effects, and The Sisterhood. Pre-op patients, watch out!! Read with extreme caution.

I love every single one of Michael Palmer's books. They all keep me one the edge of my seat, especially Natural Causes, Extreme Measures and The Sisterhood. These books were so brilliantly written that I was scared out of my mind. They all kept me sitting on the edge of my seat. Want to know the best part? I couldn't put any of them down, I tune everything else in the world out and only focus on the suspense I have right in front of me. In Flashback, and eight year old Toby has a surgery and everything goes well. Months go by and then Toby begins to relive what happened to him in the OR. He is tormented with visions of everything transpired during the surgery, everything, including the immense pain. Unfortunately Toby isn't the only patient who is experiencing this bizarre effect after the operation. Other patients who has gone this weird twist of events haven't been able to live with the terror, so they kill themselves. Soon someone will reach the conclusion that something unusual is transpiring at the hospital. If that person doesn't hurry there will be some disastrous affects. If they do not hurry, another patient will be wheeled into the OR, none the wiser to the terror and torment that awaits them there.

I am never disappointed when reading a Michael Palmer. I think the man could scribble on tree bark and I'd be happy.
As always, the storyline is believable and easy to follow.
Definitely worth the time to read!!

This book had a great premise. Too bad the author chose to focus on hospital policy and administration more than than the story line. This book was boring. It jumped from story line to policy chapter after chapter. It was a struggle to finish.

You MUST read this Series

To celebrate the upcomming release of Jean M. Auel's new Earth Series release, The Land of Painted Caves, due March 29th, 2011, we have a bargain kindle release of the first book in the series.

If you have not read this series, you are in for a treat. The novels are set 18,000 year ago at a time when the Cromagnon (us) and Neanderthal people coexist. Although certain poetic license is taken with the series, the novels are thouroughly reseached and have received a great deal of praised for their accuracy.

Ayla is a five-year old Cro-Magnon girl who is suddenly orphaned and left homeless by an earthquake that destroys her family's camp. She is found, near death, by a group of Neanderthal people, the "Clan" who are looking for a new home after their cave is destroyed in the same earthquake. A brother and sister, Iza, the medicine woman of the group, and Creb, the "Mog-ur" or shaman, adopt the young girl. The first book in the series focuses on Ayla's experience growing up amoung the Clan where she never quite fits in because of the differences in her nature. She lacks the Clan's strenght and 'memories' but is quicker to learn and to adapt to new circumstances.

If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea - at least try the sample anyway. This is a truely extraordinary series that no one should miss. Fans wait patiently for years as each new book is researched and written, and then savor it as an extraordinary treat.

still a favorite read

This is one of my favorite books. I've re-read it many times. The bonus content was irrelevant for me, as I downloaded to my kindle paper white and it doesn't enlarge pictures, only type face. But if you have it on a kindle fire or any other computer type device you will see a flap map image of the territory. same cost as regular e-book. This first book in the series garnered much acclaim, especially from the anthropology community. There are detailed description of flora, fauna, hunting, making things by hand from centuries ago. Mostly, I love the story of Ayla. There is one graphic rape, but it's integral to the story on many levels. There are some repetitive thoughts from the main character, but I still love this story. It is well written and filled with grit and determination. Two unique cultures (the only two that exist in this world juxtapositioned perfectly in this story.

I read thin book for the first time when 20 years ago. I quickly fell in love with the characters and the descriptions of the world around them. Jean Auel is able to create a world that is so real that you can not wait to visit. I have always loved books with strong female characters and this book does not disappoint me in that area. Ayla is awe inspiring. I could not read the book fast enough and then was upset when I reached the end of the book. Luckily there are 5 more books in the series that allow you to follow Ayla on her journey.

I high recommend this book for anyone.

Encouraging and practical help for exasperated parents

I felt very encouraged after reading this book. As the "wicked step dad" to a 14 year old strong-willed boy, it was never easy getting him to do chores, homework, and keep his word.
The authors' practical experience with their own kids and dozens of other troubled kids shows how they went from frustration to a realistic and practical take-charge method. There are several case histories.
Their method is about accountability, taking a stand and sticking with it. It's also about parental peace of mind. It ISN'T about a military boot-camp mind set, mean-spiritedness, or being something you aren't.
My wife wished she had read the book a decade earlier, when she was treating her kid like a miniature adult, mostly in charge of his own life. He ended up being spoiled, selfish, and unreasonable as a teen.
Many years later now, he's matured, on his own, and we all have a good relationship, with mutual respect.
Parents have rights and needs, too!

A Great Book For Parents Who Want to Turn Things Around

I have had this book in my book case since the 1980's. Today it is shop worn as it has gone through so many parents hands. It was given to me when I was having trouble with my 14 year old daughter. Don't purchase this book if you want 'warm & fuzzy'. If you are still in the warm fuzzy zone then your problems will continue. This book is about getting you to face facts and start you off on a new journey. It is merely a guideline and I like the fact that they present the information in such a way that you and your teen have to do the work yourself. Why does everyone want to get off the hook? This book puts things in perspective and makes you deal with reality. It addresses the real issues and opens your eyes. If you are at your wits end with a teen that is acting out this is a great start-up book to help you identify your problems. It really shows how Tough Love can work. It also shows how we as parents find excuses for our children rather than deal with the real issues. This book helps you to start making yourself and your teen accountable for all actions and decisions. It's a winner in my eyes! It pulled me thru time and time again.

Help for frustrated parents of unruly teens

I was so happy to read about feelings and experiences from this couple who are also having problems with their own teens. Even though they are experts at counceling other people with problems as therapists, when they started having trouble with their own kids and the "shoe was on the other foot" they could see that they needed a SOLUTION. As therapists they'd tried to find for other families, the root of the childs problem. After having their own teens become unruly, they are honest in saying that they needed a SOLUTION, not to find blame or the root of the problem. It has helped me to stop blaming myself and my husband for my kids bad behavior. That in itself has given me more strength to deal with the kids when they manipulate us. I got a lot out of their book. I feel like I'm not alone with this problem. And it gave me a whole new outlook on how to deal with the problem. The only thing that dissapoints me is that there is not a toughlove group in my state. And that is what is so stressed in the book, to get support from the group when you are using toughlove. Even so, I am very happy I found the book to read. If you are having problems with your teen, you should read it. I only wish I'd read it a couple years earlier.
