Cyrano de Bergerac (Bantam Classics reissue), by Edmond Rostand

This is Edmond Rostand's immortal play in which chivalry and wit, bravery and love are forever captured in the timeless spirit of romance. Set in Louis XIII's reign, it is the moving and exciting drama of one of the finest swordsmen in France, gallant soldier, brilliant wit, tragic poet-lover with the face of a clown. Rostand's extraordinary lyric powers gave birth to a universal hero--Cyrano De Bergerac--and ensured his own reputation as author of one of the best-loved plays in the literature of the stage. This translation, by the American poet Brian Hooker, is nearly as famous as the original play itself, and is generally considered to be one of the finest English verse translations ever written.

Review
Verse drama in five acts by Edmond Rostand, performed in 1897 and published the following year. Set in 17th-century Paris, the action revolves around the emotional problems of the noble, swashbuckling Cyrano, who, despite his many gifts, feels that no woman can ever love him because he has an enormous nose. Secretly in love with the lovely Roxane, Cyrano agrees to help his inarticulate rival, Christian, win her heart by allowing him to present Cyrano's love poems, speeches, and letters as his own work. Eventually Christian recognizes that Roxane loves him for Cyrano's qualities, not his own, and he asks Cyrano to confess his identity to Roxane; Christian then goes off to a battle that proves fatal. Cyrano remains silent about his own part in Roxane's courtship. As he is dying years later, he visits Roxane and recites one of the love letters. Roxane realizes that it is Cyrano she loves, and he dies content. Cyrano de Bergerac was based only nominally on the 17th-century nobleman of the same name, known for his bold adventures and large nose. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The greatest play of all time...
By Gary S
I've been around theater for quite a while, and I was lucky enough to be in this play twice, once as Cyrano. I've done Shakespeare, O'Neill, Chekhov...and I've never been in a play that comes close to this in terms of dramatic force.
The fashion in French theater at the time it was written was simple domestic drama: husbands and wives and their various conflicts. This play exploded on the scene and there was extremely strong public reaction. (I think there may even have been riots.)
For modern American audiences, I must confess, it's a pretty long haul. Even with some judicious cutting, it's tough to get the thing down close to three hours. But what a ride! Poetry, fight scenes, comedy, tears...it's just incredible.
In all the plays I've done, I've never done one that comes so close to, literally, the meaning of life. Why are we here? What makes human beings act the way they do? Why do people try things that are clearly impossible? It's all in there.
I knew someone in college who gave this paperback edition to everyone he knew as a gift, because it spoke so strongly to him.
Looking back on it now, I'm amazed that I was able to memorize all the text, because I'm convinced that this is the longest role in Western theater...longer than Hamlet, I think.
Hooker's translation has been called the greatest translation of poetry ever, and while I'm not a poetry student, I can agree. Squishing the 6-foot French lines into 5-foot English lines and still retaining the dramatic flow must have been a daunting task.
Anyway, it's the greatest play I have ever seen, read or performed.

Excellent Play, Mediocre Translation
By Matthew Asnip
Cyrano de Bergerac by Rostand is my favourite play. The French original is a gem in almost every respect. It is wonderfully well written in Alexandrine (a difficult form of verse). Rostand's romantic masterpiece shines not only as a play, but as poetry.

This particular translation (unattributed) is pedestrian. It is accurate, but tin-eared. It is not the Brian Hooker translation. I state that because I wound up buying it in the belief that it was the Hooker translation and was consequently much disappointed.

For any literary work originally written in another language (this, Don Quixote, All Quiet on the Western Front), it is important to pay attention to who is responsible for the translation. Some translators are awful. Some are mediocre (such as whoever did this one). And some are wonderful (Brian Hooker).

For those who are not as enamored of Brian Hooker's work as I am, the Anthony Burgess translation is also quite good.

Caveat Emptor.

Carol Clark's Cyrano lacks panache'
By Jason L.
I currently own four different translations of Cyrano de Bergerac with another two more on the way. I am truly surprised to see how many new translations are being turned out of this wonderful classic. By far, three of the greatest are Brian Hooker's, Anthony Burgess' and Lowell Blair's. But I wanted to see what was new in the world of Cyrano. Penguin Books is known for its quality and I have seldom been let down.

In this case, I felt let down and disappointed. Carol Clark's translation just doesn't seem to have the feel for the character of Cyrano that so many of us have come to know and love. Though she is one of the few who ends the play with the word "panache'," her translation has too many spots that just don't feel the "white plume of freedom" Cyrano spoke of in rebellion to the the elite who wore their beauty, grace and flair on the outside and those who sucked up to them. Also, Carol Clark takes liberty in changing meaning in certain key places that I particularly did not care for at all. Perhaps her only true innovation is the proper gender tense he uses with regard to his sword which he regards as a "she" as in the original French. She gets too many things wrong to be commended for translating a Cyrano that will endure. I believe it is a novelty.

Let me emphasize that this is not a "bad" rendering "per se"; I feel strongly that it is just not a good rendering. It's merely AVERAGE, mediocre but as Cyrano believed in striving to be the best in everything, perhaps Carol Clark should have taken a page out of his book? I don't believe it will be any more understandable or accessable to today's reader than older translations and the reader will be losing out on so much with this rendering. I feel strongly that the Clark translation plays fast and loose in certain key areas even though she may make up for it in others. Thus she receives an "okay" three stars but I was sorely tempted to give her two.

If you are looking for a brand-new translation and are willing to let go of preconceptions, Carol Clark's Cyrano may be for you. BUT if you are new to Cyrano de Bergerac and want a truer and more faithful version to Edmond Rostand's orginal play, character and the language, I would strongly recommend avoiding this one and purchasing one of the following: any edition by Brian Hooker (his translation was behind the 1950 Jose Ferrer Academy Award winning performance of Cyrana), Lowell Blair (I've become more fond of this one with each reading) or finding one of the Anthony Burgess editions (Gerard Depardieu's Cyrano movie's English sub-titles as well as countless plays have used this edition). These three are all 5 star translations. Christopher Fry's rhyming couplet Cyrano by Oxford is good (4 star) but not up to the standard of the three authors I have listed as alternatives to Clark.

In conclusion, I would say this: Will I read this play more than once? Perhaps, but only for comparison to the other better translations of Cyrano I have but never for enjoyment as I do with my other versions. A newcomer to Cyrano might enjoy this rendering and fall in love with the character but I personally don't see how; the translator has robbed Cyrano of much of his inner panache' and the other characters of their own unique qualities. I do not believe this translation has any staying power and will quickly be swept aside for the familiar and better translations that have been around longer, having already stood the test of time. For while the authors I have cited as alternatives may have different styles, they all tap into Cyrano's inner panache', his white plume of freedom, flair and independence whereas Clark's version seems to me to be just revision for revisionist sake without any vision or pathos or the wit that has set Cyrano apart since 1897.

From Publishers Weekly
Claiming that the death of the 42-year-old Elvis Presley in 1977 profoundly affected millions of lives, Moody (Life After Life explores the Elvis cult and reasons for fans' alleged premonitory dreams of his death and psychic experiences that followed it. Some of the dreams cited here concern an imaginary last concert of Elvis, at which he announced his death, or in which the dreamer saw him in his coffin. Fans tell of apparitionsamong those quoted are a clinical psychologist, a farmer, a truck driver, a policeman. Such experiences, suggests Moody, often reflect an unconscious emotional need or unresolved conflict and may have a religious impact on the dreamer. Numerous presumably sane Presley fans refuse to believe that he is dead, according to the author; they cite that his name is an anagram for LIVES.

elvis has never really left the building
By Janice L. Faust
I checked this book out of the library in 1993 after a trip to see a friend in Memphis Tn. I had always been an Elvis fan so of course I went to Graceland while I was in town. I began reading about Elvis after that trip. There are alot of biographies and tell all's out there and I have read a good many. I never forgot this book because it was so unusual. To realize that so many people believe that they have had an experience with Elvis after his death was fascinating. A few of the stories are silly but some are quite haunting. The book moved me in a way I had not expected. I returned the book to library, and that very night around 2:00 a.m. my phone rang and it was Elvis. Ok, it was a recording of Elvis singing Love Me Tender but in the middle of the night, after just having finished this book, it scared the daylights out of me. To this day I have never figured out who made that call. I will never forget it.

FASCINATING!
By A Customer
It is way too bad that Dr. Moody abandoned affiliation with this project. It is fascinating, enlightening, and entertaining. Dr. Moody's later research paved the way for LIFE AFTER DEATH studies, and he became a fine-print foot-note in that historic research. But it is with ELVIS where he began. For whatever bizarre reason, Dr. Moody decided to interview people who had "ELVIS AFTER-LIFE EXPERIENCES". As weird as this sounds, Dr. Moody serendipitiously unlocked a Holy Grail: These were real, normal, successful people he interviewed. People who REALLY believe they interacted with ELVIS after his death. One man picked ELVIS up as he hitch-hiked. A house-wife found his profile in the base of a shower! Another woman compared watermelons with him in a grocery store. A whole family sees his eyes follow them out of a picture! Get the point? It is easy to understand why Dr. Moody would abandon and disown this ridiculous tripe, however, he really did catch something! Presented straight-forward and fast, without judgement or psycho-babble, as a student of psychology I would sincerely recommend this work as a treatise in the bizarre! PS. Thank you Dr. Moody! I didn't think people like this really existed!

Stop laughing
By Laurel Jenkins-Crowe
I don't believe or disbelieve in an afterlife of any sort; I bought this book for a paper I wrote on the legend of the hitchhiking ghost of Elvis. Dr. Moody not only recorded the earliest version of this legend I could find, he also accounted for the "sighting" in a compassionate, psychologically rational way. His blend of the open-minded and the semi-skeptical is what makes the book interesting reading.

Elvis did and does mean a lot to many people. I lived in Memphis for 30 years, and I still can't say I "get it," but this book (and Strausbaugh's E: Reflections on the Birth of the Elvis Faith) have brought me a lot closer to an understanding of the Elvis phenomenon.

The Star--The public saw her as a gifted child  star: the youngest actor to win an Oscar for her role  as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker and the  youngest actor to have a prime-time television series  bearing her own name.

The Nightmare--What the  public did not see was Anna Marie Duke, a young girl  whose life changed forever at age seven when  tyrannical mangers stripped her of nearly all that was  familiar, beginning with her name. She was deprived  of family and friends. Her every word was  programmed, her every action monitored and criticized. She  was fed liquor and prescription drugs, taught to  lie to get work, and relentlessly drilled to win  roles.

The Legend--Out of this nightmare emerged  Patty Duke, a show business legend still searching  for the child, Anna. She won three Emmy Awards and  divorced three husbands. A starring role in  Valley of the Dolls nearly ruined her  career. She was notorious for wild spending sprees,  turbulent liaisons, and an uncontrollable temper.  Until a long hidden illness was diagnosed, and her  amazing recovery recovery began.

The Triumph--  Call Me Anna is an American success  story that grew out of a bizarre and desperate  struggle for survival. A harrowing, ultimately  triumphant story told by Patty Duke herself--wife,  mother, political activist, President of the Screen  Actors Guild, and at last, a happy, fulfilled woman  whose miracle is her own life.

Wonderful look into the struggle, fear and courage of overcomeing the highs and lows of a manic depressive.
By Matthew Gilmore
I've never been able to describe what it's like to go through a manic episode. It can be very deceptive to others and yourself. It can ruin your life in a matter of days and when coming through it you are left with an indescribable empty pitt of depression. This is an incredible story of an american sweetheart who's extreme success and equally paralyzing mental health struggles were caught on stage, film and television. It gave me so much hope. I wish all my family and friends would read this.

I am not normally a reader but this book really drew me in. The way Anna told her story, it kept my attention from beginning to end. I've always been a fan of Anna's but I have even more respect for her after reading this book & learning all that she went through. She truly was a treasure & she left us with an awesome legacy on so many levels.

A Complete Bio
By richkd
Even though this autobiography is slightly dated, it is an excellent account of the pressure put on Ms. Duke in her early years, then upon herself later on. A somewhat sad tale, but a learning experience as well. She doesn't seem to hold any punches when giving her impressions of those who formed her personality from day-one.

A good no-nonsense volume
By History Buff
I bought this for my daughters. It is a good introductory version of the Gita. I have read quite a number of editions, and sadly do not remember which were the most interesting to me and why. This particularly volume is not as rich with respect to imagery as many of the others. I wanted to be careful about how some volumes use artistic liberties in an attempt to teach the reader. The reason is that the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna can lead one to discover for themselves its allegorical wisdom A process of self discovery. This addition at the very least, does no harm. In a couple places it used the word "individual," in a way in which I suggested that they interpret it as 'ego' instead.

This translation gives us just the words of the Gita without commentary ... trusting the reader is wise enough to interpret and understand. I read through the night and couldn't put it down.

Nice serendipitous find
By Spencer Smith
I bought this book solely based on the Amazon reviews. It was a leap of faith, as it's been out of print for 25 years and the best available price was a dollar a year. With such universal praise I hoped I wouldn't go wrong at that price. I must admit I found the writing style very awkward at first and it took a while to get into the speech flow of the main character. But perseverence was rewarded. The plot is extremely well put together, and builds nicely to the climax. The characters come to life, and as you can get used to anything after a while, I got used to the speech patterns of the protagonist early enough in the book to enjoy the read immensely. Certainly a top 50 in my SF collection.

A Rip-Roaring, Uplifting Tale of the End of the World (as we know it!)
By EcoInfo Guy
A book to drive grammarians crazy - and to thrill sci-fi fans. David R. Palmer's book contains almost no personal pronouns, complete sentences or ambiguous meanings. Quite a feat! Of course, he cheated a bit - by eliminating almost everyone to whom personal pronouns could apply before the book starts.

"End of the world" books tend to be depressing. However, this is the exception. "Candy" the 11-year old protagonist in the book is so full of life, and her story so full of both surprises and interesting details, that "Beginning of the World" might be a better characterization.

This book is a real favorite of mine and warrants a frequent re-reading. For those who grew up in the 60's and 70's David Palmer hides references to some cultural gems in the tale (e.g., "Gus" the name of an old auto mechanic referred to in the text is clearly the "Gus Wilson" of the long-running "Model Garage" (1920-1969)series in Popular Science Magazine). If you don't spot them, no harm done - but they are an added treat if you do.

After one additional book "Threshold" (a good book, but Emergence is better), David R. Palmer seems to have disappeared from the writing scene. Rumors of his fate have included both death (he had some dangerous hobbies that add authenticity to some the latter sections of the book) and a "real job" that has kept him away from writing. This leaves me a bit torn - I'd like him to write more - but at the same time, I'm more than grateful for "Emergence"!

Deep in Indian country, Major Mark Devereaux and his men find a grisly scene: a wagon train savagely attacked, with no survivors. One of the wagons originally with the group is missing; in it is a fortune in gold and Devereaux’s daughter, Mary. The slaughter, Devereaux learns, was not the work of Indians but of a murderous outlaw band. With the stakes rising in a deadly game, the only wild card is Lieutenant Tenadore Brian, who is riding with the missing wagon—against orders. Devereaux knows Brian is a good soldier, but is he good enough to protect a saddlebag full of gold . . . and the life of his daughter?

Two hundred vast miles stretching west of Fort Laramie--this was a country! No wonder the Indians were prepared to fight for it. Ferociously, with massacre and fire they swept down on yet another wagon train. One wagon mysteriously escaped. In it, the major's daughter and a dashing, hell-for-leather cavalry officer with renegade notions--and sixty thousand dollars in gold. Ready for anything, they made their stand.

Good Read - Action Packed with sub-plots
By Norma S
I always enjoy Louis L'Amour books but this was definitely one of his better books. Characters were well-defined and the story line was, as usual, very good. The book started with a wagon train slaughter which included the disappearance of Army gold and the wife and daughter of two Army personnel. Their story and the story of the father looking for his daughter is good, suspenseful and full of information about the area.

I would definitely recommend the book to anyone that enjoys L'Amour books and believe that even folks that don't tend to read much would enjoy this book.

A troop of Union soldiers and forty bad men - all eyeballing the gold, the girl, and the rogue cavalry officer
By H. Bala
In 1988 Louis L'Amour began blazing new trails in that undiscovered country, but he leaves behind a legacy of rugged tales set in the Old West. UNDER THE SWEETWATER RIM was first published in 1971 and it's predictably entertaining stuff, a lean and brisk read. L'Amour always was a voracious researcher and this time he places his western drama two hundred miles west of Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and as the story travels, he throws in plenty of details regarding the untamed landscape, the historical landmarks, the hardy people, and such. The novel opens with U.S. Army Major Devereaux and his cavalry patrol grimly surveying the site of an ambushed wagon train. It soon dawns on the soldiers that one wagon is mysteriously unaccounted for, this the ambulance wagon packing sixty thousand dollars of payroll in gold... and transporting the Major's lovely daughter, Mary Devereaux.

Major Devereaux is up against it. Indians on the warpath. Scouts on the take. Somewhere out there, forty violent desperadoes lurk, coveting the gold and the women and they're ramrodded by the murderous outlaw Reuben Kelsey. And Devereaux's patrol, comprising mostly of raw recruits, can expect no help from Fort Laramie. Then there's devilish cavalry officer, Lieutenant Tenadore Brian, who went AWOL and absconded with the missing ambulance wagon and the gold and Mary. Major Devereaux, a very concerned father, doesn't at all trust Brian. But Tenadore Brian may just be the only hope left.

There are several intriguing character dynamics which color the story, and I'm not referring to the romantic sub-plot, something which L'Amour doesn't tend to focus on, anyway, in his novels. Instead we get the probing interactions between Ten Brian and Reuben Kelsey, two capable men who a long time ago may have been friends. And then there's Major Devereaux's ongoing distaste for Brian, whom he feels is a ne'er-do-well drifter and not good enough for his daughter. It's an interesting dichotomy because, deep inside, the Major does realize that Brian is an exceptional soldier.

L'Amour, of course, is synonymous with hard-hitting action and, while most times he lends secondary importance to the romance between the cowboy and the girl, he opens up and waxes loquacious and philosophical with the romance of the Old West. It doesn't matter how rough-hewn and uneducated his main characters are, they all bear a love for the land and a respect for nature, and there's always a passage or two in L'Amour's novels in which the writer speaks his heart thru their mouths. And I did say that there's hard-hitting action here, right? It doesn't get better than when the odds are heavily arranged against a Louis L'Amour protagonist. Because that's when the hands slap leather, the lead blisters the air, and the knuckles bleed and get swoll. This is heaven in the eyes of a modern hombre nostalgic for the perilous American Frontier. Nowadays who do we got to look at? The Marlboro Man? Alan Jackson? Billy Ray Cyrus? C'mon, now...

LIFE SAFER
By A Customer
This book is the most phenomenal writing on panic & anxiety disorder that I have read...and I have read almost all of them. Before being diagnosed with panic disorder I was in absolute turmoil. Every book, article & pamphlet that I had picked up only ever told of the MOST COMMON symptoms of the disorder, leaving me feeling alone and helpless. My symptoms went far beyond the most commonly observed ones. I had no idea what was wrong with me. I literally thought that I was going crazy! It wasn't until after one more exhausting day living with the fear that I would never be the same again that I stumbled upon Dr. Sheehan's book at the University of South Florida's campus library. Despite the fact that my eyes seemed as if they were completely dialated and my hands and feet were shaking uncontrollably I could not put this book down. This was the first time in my several months of suffering that I finally thought that I was going to be ok. Dr. Sheehan had simply told accounts of other people's bouts with panic in detail. It was these stories that made me realize that I was not alone. There were other people in the world going through the same thing as me. It was because of the information in this book that I decided to contact Dr. Sheehan to see if he could help me too. To my complete amazement I found that he was working in the clinical psychology department at the University of South Florida. He has been my doctor ever since. His many years of study involving panic and anxiety disorders has left him with an incredibly vast knowledge of the subject. I would reccomend it to anyone suffering from panic and anxiety disorder as well as anyone else who would like a broader understanding of this debilitating disease that is affecting more and more people everyday. At the risk of sounding overly dramatic I would like to conclude in saying that this book literally saved my life.

The beginning of the end of fear
By Richard Gargano
This book was the first step in changing my life and ending anxiety's control over it. This book should be read by those *who feel they suffer alone; *who feel they have a personality flaw that causes their anxiety; *who discourage themselves because they mistakenly believe that their anixety can be overcome by 'pulling themselves together' like 'other people do'; *are afraid to take medicines for anxiety
Sheehan's book breaks the taboo that 'its all in your mind', but rather demonstrates how the "anxiety disease" has a biological base and thus can be treated ... completely managed by proper medication.
Though dated (many new medicines have come to the market since Sheehan's book), this book explains to the lay person the new paradigm of modern psychopharmacology. (It should be required reading for every psychiatrist!)

Excellent introductory book about anxiety
By Deborah Gray
An excellent book about panic attacks which approaches the disease from a biological perspective. Sheehan covers the seven progressive stages of the disease, causes, treatment and recovery, using case histories as examples. The book also contains an anxiety scale to help you determine whether the level of your anxiety is excessive.

A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens

With his sublime parting words, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done..." Sidney Carton joins that exhalted group of Dickensian characters who have earned a permanent place in the popular literary imagination. His dramatic story, set against the volcanic fury of the French Revolution and pervaded by the ominous rumble of the death carts trundling toward the guillotine, is the heart-stirring tale of a heroic soul in an age gone mad. A masterful pageant of idealism, love, and adventure -- in a Paris bursting with revolutionary frenzy, and a London alive with anxious anticipation -- A Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens's most energetic and exciting works.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Charles Dickens's classic tale of one family's suffering during the French Revolution is brought to life in this audio adaptation. The voice of Audie Award-winning narrator Simon Vance sets the tone for the characters and creates the Dickensesqe mood of the times when the rich and the poor were far apart and no one was exempt from the ensuing wrath during the Revolution. Vance's stone varies from soothing to animated while creating different voices for the characters and using appropriate accents. A bonus feature on the last CD is an e-book in pdf format that can be printed or used as a read-along while listening to the audio. This easily navigated feature would be particularly helpful for struggling readers.—Jeana Actkinson, Bridgeport High School, TX

Review
“[A Tale of Two Cities] has the best of Dickens and the worst of Dickens: a dark, driven opening, and a celestial but melodramatic ending; a terrifyingly demonic villainess and (even by Dickens’ standards) an impossibly angelic heroine. Though its version of the French Revolution is brutally simplified, its engagement with the immense moral themes of rebirth and terror, justice, and sacrifice gets right to the heart of the matter . . . For every reader in the past hundred and forty years and for hundreds to come, it is an unforgettable ride.”–from the Introduction by Simon Schama

Fraudulent Advertising
By Galen Heneghan
I did not realize that, to avoid being scammed, it was necessary to read a complete description of this product, including customer reviews, before purchasing. This book, listed as a paperback version of A Tale of Two Cities, is, in fact, a "retelling", I suppose for children! What an unscrupulous seller! There is an obvious intent to mislead here. Beware is right! Don't buy from this seller!

Amazing novel, but font too small on this book
By coloradostevie
The novel is great, this is not a review of the novel. This particular book/product is the paperback from Barnes and Noble classics. I really appreciated the intro which includes the history surrounding the time of the novel. However, the print of this book is very small; I usually don't have problems with font size in books, but this is significantly small...tiny.

Such a good story
By M. Heiss
I love this story.

I'm a read aloud mom with a family of boys, and they LOVED this story! Very enthusiastic listening.

The thing with Dickens is all the characters are people. Every one is a portrait and a caricature at the same time. My kids drew while I read this aloud to them.

A great story about the misery inflicted by the politics of revenge. Still apt today.

This edition is not high quality. The paper is very bad and the ink stinks.
