DOLLY'S SISTER DID A GREAT JOB. IT WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND I WAS SO GLAD SHE INCLUDED SOME PICTURES OF THEM AT DIFFERENT AGES. good book

I read this book years and years ago as a teenager. Yet many of the images and situations it speaks of have stayed in my mind clearly since, even something as simple as when the man washes in the cold river using the pebbles to clean his skin. I am not exactly sure why the story made such an impact upon me, perhaps it was the first book for a young reader that portrayed a person's struggle to figure out who he is in and to the world and himself.

A well-written story of an American Indian child growing into a man torn by clashing worlds and cultures.
Borland reminds me of Hemingway with his clear grasp of clean and crisp language.
The settings and characters are unforgettable.

This was a high school reading assignment, but I have always remembered the beauty of its language, characters, and plot.

"Black Poetry Brought to Life"

I was introduced to this text as an black poetry starved undergraduate about 15 years ago. It simply mesmerized me...was literally a book that I carried around in my pocket for years. Now as a professor of Africana Studies and English, I almost feel priveleged to share this book with my students as some are mesmerized for the first time and I get mesmerized again and again. Dudley Randall remains one of the overlooked giants of black literature...not so much for his own work, but his commitment to building the canon, like his work at Broadside Press with then young poets like Sonia Sanchez and Don. L. Lee (Haki Madhubuti) and this volume of poetry.

I laughed, I cried, I reflected, and I learned

This book was required reading for a graduate class that I had, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was simply great. I was introduced to many poets whom I'd never heard of and that was the best part, because I feel that many Blacks don't know about poets who were not mainstream, this leaves a lot of important writers to dangle in the wind without every being recognized by the very people for whom they wrote. This book was great in particular I liked the seculars they were hilarious, they reminded me of the epitaths we used to read in American Lit in high school. Great little book!!!!

Excellent Poetry and Historical Account

I am an author and a poet and will state that this is an excellent job by Dudley Randall. The poems in this anthology flow very well. The section on the Harlem Renaissance is very pleasing; know the struggles encountered and the determination of will to succeed, the poets during that era showed strength and courage and are well documented. The book is a history lesson in itself regarding poets of the past and present. There is a distinct contrasting of poets who are classified as folk and literary poets. The additional distinction between pre-renaissance and post-renaissance poets is also made in the book. Overall, the poems from poets in the anthology are outstanding and give a great blending of African-American History.

Great Gift for Single, Live-ins, Young Marrieds; anyone

The "I Hate to Cook", full of witty wisdom that goes far beyond the kitchen. This book is worth buying for its humor alone, but the common sense advice and cooking directions/recipes are a real prize whether you are a nouveau cook or a skilled chef.

I believe the first "I Hate to Cook Book" was published back in 1960. As a new bride, I bought my own version in 1965, along with Craig Claiborne's "Herb and Spice" cookbook. These two books have stood well in the test of time and formed a solid base for my own culinary adventures.

"I Hate to Cook", is my favorite gift for people who are getting married, moving into their first apartment or place ,going to college, or whatever; this book is "the bomb", as the younguns now say. Not only does, "I Hate to Cook" give good culinary advice but the recipes are quick, easy and delicious. I have made most of the recipes in this book and they all work and taste good.

Give someone you like or love the gift of laughter and success in the kitchen. You may reap a whole lifetime of cookies and pot roasts.

My traditional wedding present

This is usually what I give to newlyweds for a housewarming gift. The recipes are simple and fool-proof, the humor's great. On my 3rd copy - which isn't bad considering my mom gave me my first copy 15 years ago as a college gift. The only drawback is that it wouldn't go over too well with men - definitely written for women:( Otherwise my son would have his own copy by now. Get it...very much worth it. Oh yeah, the recipes TASTE good too, and check out that last-minute supper chapter.

A Tribute To The Non Cook

Here's a woman after my own heart: she hates to cook and is unashamed to admit this. The manner in which Miss Bracken admits is rife with humour and finesse ~ plus she tosses into the bargain 180 quick, easy, housewife tested recipes (this book was published in the '60s ~ 1960 to be exact) that anyone can make, even those hostile toward kitchen environs. Miss Bracken's wit is peppery (note the food connotation), vinegary (ditto), and her prose is salted (!) through with references to classic literature, tidbits of common sense advice, and slams at 'pop' psychology (as hilarious then as it remains today). Here's a sampling of (some of) what you're in for with this read: 'The Leftover, or Every Family Needs a Dog'; 'Spuds and Other Starches, or Ballast is a Girl's Best Friend'; 'Potluck Supper, or How to Bring Water For the Lemonade'; 'Luncheon for the Girls, or Wait Until You Taste Maybelle's Peanut Butter Aspic'. In between the pages of these chapters you'll find recipes for such tasties as: 'Skid Road Stroganoff', 'Sub Gum Yuk', 'Oddment', 'Old Faithful', and, appropo for the era, 'Beetniks' (a nifty way of fixing shredded pickled red beets). If you catch a whiff of the droll and acerbic, you are quite correct. Peg Bracken is a jewel. Very popular in the Sixties and Seventies, she also published an Appendix to 'The I Hate To Cook Book', plus several other books including 'The I Hate To Housekeep Book', 'A Window Over the Sink', 'I Try To Behave Myself' (etiquette), 'But I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World' (travel), and 'On Getting Old For The First Time'. In all of these, she never misses a beat, her timing is impeccable. The sort of woman you'd love to have for a friend or neighbour, especially when one runs out of sugar and can't find the car keys. I highly recommend you begin your Bracken odyssey with this book, and see where it leads you. Enhanced by Hilary Knight's warm and witty line drawings.

About the Author
Robert Goldsborough (b. 1937) is an American author best known for continuing Rex Stout’s famous Nero Wolfe series. Born in Chicago, he attended Northwestern University and upon graduation went to work for the Associated Press, beginning a lifelong career in journalism that would include long periods at the Chicago Tribune and Advertising Age.
While at the Tribune, Goldsborough began writing mysteries in the voice of Rex Stout, the creator of iconic sleuths Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Goldsborough’s first novel starring Wolfe, Murder in E Minor (1986), was met with acclaim from both critics and devoted fans, winning a Nero Award from the Wolfe Pack. Nine more Wolfe mysteries followed, including Death on Deadline (1987) and Fade to Black (1990). Stop the Presses! (2016) is his most recent novel.​

The Closest Goldsborough Came to Capturing Rex Stout's Grand Characters.

I so loved Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe series. I collected each and every one and have reread them many times. So when I heard the Stout estate had authorized another author to continue the series I was cautiously optimistic. The first book I read, Bloodied Ivy: A Nero Wolfe Mystery, was a disappointment. One of Wolfe characteristics was his strong opposition to leaving the old brownstone house, doing so ONLY when he had to. So what does Goldsborough do here but have him leave the brownstone to investigate a murder on a college campus. While the story in that book wasn't horrible it just didn't seem like it was about Nero Wolfe.

So along comes this effort, Death on Deadline, and low-&-behold, he got it right. A previous reviewer wrote "It is almost as good as the top tier Rex Stouts." Well, that's really pushing but I do agree that this is far and away Goldborough's best Nero Wolfe novel. The characteristics of both Wolfe and Archie Goodwin are dead on, the story was intriguing, and the ending was classic Wolfe. A very enjoyable read and gave hope for the new series. Alas, after this book the next two Robert Goldsborough's Nero Wolfe books were bad. Not just average, but bad. I couldn't even finish "The Silver Spire." I went back to his first effort, Murder in E Minor which I had missed when it was first published and although it's better than most it still wasn't a Nero Wolfe story, no matter what the names of the characters were.

So if you are a Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe fanatic like I am, by all means give this book a shot. I think you will be quite surprised and very pleased. I would recommend that you skip the rest.

as close as you're going to get to the real thing

Having read all of the Nero Wolfe canon when I was younger, and now revisiting the books because of the new Timothy Hutton series, this time around I came to a deeper appreciation of the humor in the books and the relationship between the two men. But since they are fast reads, I ran out of them too quickly. So, I was delighted to find that someone else was trying to pick up the thread. The fun thing about these characters is that, no matter the decade, they remain the same age - would that all of us could do that. So I gave this book a try. Unlike some other readers I was surprised to find that it seemed exactly like a Rex Stout book. Goldsborough captured Archie's voice and Wolfe's vocabulary plus here and there the humor was exactly what you would expect from Archie. The only thing I found jarring was the references to computers, etc. But Stout would have done the same since he always placed his characters in the time he was living in. I think it is unimportant to cavil about how Goldsborough is unlike Stout. We cannot have Rex Stout back unfortunately. I'm just glad we can still have Archie and Wolfe and all the other delightful characters in their world.

This is the best of the Goldsboroughs. It is almost as good as the top tier Rex Stouts. It deserves to be in print along with the Rex Stout Nero Wolfe novels.

About the Author
His life was as dark and dramatic as the great novels he wrote. He was born in Moscow in 1821, the son of a former army surgeon whose drunken brutality led his own serfs to murder him by pouring vodka down his throat until he strangled. A short first novel, Poor Folk (1846), brought him instant success, but his writing career was cut short by his arrest for alleged subversion against the Tsar in 1849. In prison he was given the "silent treatment" for eight months, before he was led in front of a firing squad. Dressed in a death shroud, he faced an open grave and awaited execution when an order arrived commuting his sentence. He then spent four years at hard labor in a Siberian prison, where he began to suffer from epilepsy, and he only returned to St. Petersburg a full ten years after he left in chains. His prison experiences coupled with his conversion to a conservative and profoundly religious philosophy formes the basis for his great novels. But it was his fortuitous marriage to Anna Snitkina, following a period of utter destitution brought about by his compulsive gambling, that gave Dostoyevsky the emotional stability to complete Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Possessed, and The Brothers Karamazov. When he died in 1881, he left a legacy of masterworks that influenced the great thinkers and writers of the Western world.

Notes from Underground

Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground" is an existential classic. This book, like many of Dostoevsky's works, intertwines the notions of literature and philosophy, probing the depths of aesthetic contemplation through philosophy. Dostoevsky, used this manuscript as a testing or training ground for later ideas he would explore in his groundbreaking and notorious books such as "Crime and Punishment,""Brothers Karamazov," and "the Idiot." Also central to the theme of the writing one will enciounter many notions of autonomy, or freedom of the individual. The main character, "the Underground man," performs many absurd actions, often in spite of his own self. However, this deals with the notion as Sartre later expressed, is it better for the individual to choose for him or herself and be wrongs sometimes or once in a while, then to have others choose for oneself? The protagonist, is continuously struggling, with himself and the existential burden of constructing and being soley responsible for ones own existence, for owns own counciousness. "Notes from Underground" is a magnificent, psychological exploration, into the mind of the individual, free, autonomous and choosing completley for oneself, which is anything but an easy matter.

A biped, ungrateful

Let me be the million millionth reader to praise Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground. I finally opened this brilliant tale of a man's mental morass after having the Bantam Classic version on my shelf for years. Years! While another review or the many critical, scholarly examinations of this seminal work will better help you understand this story, I must stake my claim to it's effects on me, and the empathy and appreciation for the Underground man's-thusly Dostoevsky himself-boldness and passion, however anti-social, bitter and vulgar.
While the first part is more of an internal philosophical back-and-forth, finding the man debating the Laws of Nature and the propositions of Fate, the second finds him in action, risking himself against others, in a society of facades, abuses hurled upon abuses, indifference, and pained love.
It is a harrowing read, and taking a translation for what it is, namely a partial recreation of ideas and images true mainly to it's original language, the story is fluid and the attitude and feel of the dingy St. Petersburg apartment, restaurant and streets in which it takes place are vibrant enough for me to be still amazed at the brilliance of Dostoevsky's mind and skill, artistry and sense of the immortal nature of paradox within human existence.
This is a classic, and must be experienced.

Incredible

This is an amazing book. Really. A psychological study of a character you either hate or fear you're becoming(or perhaps cheer on, depending on your emotional makeup). NFU is part tragedy, part satire, part character study, part philosophical discussion, and part misanthrope's manifesto(if you identify with him, as I partially do, it opens up a whole new level of enjoyment).
PS: The version to get is, for once, the Bantam Classics version. That translation is incredible: "Two times two makes four is a brazen fop who bars your way with arms akimbo, spitting." What color! What life! This translation crackles with energy and cleverness.

Its late, just finished this book, tears streaming - The best love story ever

This book should have been a best seller but I guess it wouldnt get publicity because it isnt politically correct. Written years ago by Jim and Sybil Stockdale and chronicles not just his hideous prison experiences with the North Vietnamese for seven and a half years, but his wifes and families experience on this end.

It is written as one chapter his and one hers in the same time frames and it is a real life thriller with all the love, sadness, misery and then some. As a Marine and Vietnam Vet I have to say my hat goes off to both of them. The book chronicles her journey from young housewife left alone with four boys to leading the other POW wives and founding an organization that made a difference,. She met with the North Vietnamese and Johnson and Nixon and what a story.

Every kid in America should have to read this book.

A BOOK THAT HAS SHAPED MY LIFE FOR 30 YEARS!!!!

I cannot give this book a high enough rating as Amazon only allows "5" and my rating would be more like "99". I read this book in the early 80s after the Stockdales (Jim & Sybil) first published it. To give you a little background, on Sep. 9, 1965 Stockdale ejected from his A-4 Skyhawk while shot down over North Vietnam. He parachuted into a small village and was immediately severely beaten and taken into custody by the Vietnamese. Stockdale was taken to Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi (affectionately dubbed the "Hanoi Hilton" by the POWs) where, for the next seven years he was locked in leg irons and routinely tortured. Because he was the SRO (Senior Ranking Officer), Stockdale endured some of the most severe torture. The Vietnamese felt if they could "break" Stockdale, then the rest of the POWS would stop resisting interogators' attempts to procure information. At one point, he endured severe torture in an effort to "prepare" him for a propaganda coup. Instead of allowing himself to be manipulated by the VC, Stockdale severely disfigured himself with a razor, then beat his face to a pulp with a wooden stool in an effort to avoid being paraded before the communist media. When Stockdale was finally released as a prisoner of war on February 12, 1973, his shoulders had been wrenched from their sockets, his leg shattered by a torturer, and his back broken. For his efforts, Stockdale was awarded our nation's highest award - the Congressional Medal of Honor.

In addition to reading about James' physical, mental and emotional torture by the Vietnamese, you are also treated to the events of his wife as she fought to adhere to the policy of the U.S government of not speaking out, while the years passed with no results. An exceptionally strong-willed woman, Sybil eventually organizes The League of American Families of POWs and MIAs and attends the Paris Peace Talks where she contradicts U.S. policy by exposing the torture the POWs were enduring on a daily basis. She is also instrumental in procuring better living conditions for the POWs in Hanoi, and the eventual discontinuation of torture.., with other wives of servicemen who were in similar circumstances. On March 4, 1976, President Gerald Ford presents the Medal of Honor to James Stockdale who, while imprisoned was part of a group of eleven prisoners known as the "Alcatraz Gang" (George Thomas Coker, George McKnight, Jeremiah Denton, Harry Jenkins, Sam Johnson, James Mulligan, Howard Rutledge, Robert Shumaker, Ronald Storz and Nels Tanner) who were the "hardliners" who, by refusing to relent in any way to the demands of the VC became an example all other POWs followed. This group of eleven men suffered the worst torture, most time spent in solitary confinement (years) and were prevented from having any form of interaction with each other, as well as the other prisoners. Each of these eleven men were locked in leg irons 24 hours-a-day locked in a cell measuring 3 feet by 9 feet, with a light bulb that was kept on around- the-clock. In the end Stockdale said "I never lost faith in the end of the story, I never doubted not only that I would get out, but also that I would prevail in the end and turn the experience into the defining event of my life, which, in retrospect, I would not trade".

I was fortunate to have been able to enjoy a number of phone conversation with Admiral Stockdale in later years, and it saddened me deeply when, on July 5, 2005 he slowly succumbed to Alzheimer's disease. May God Bless You Admiral Stockdale and cradle your broken body for all eternity.

The Tonkin gulf resolution which started the U.SA. military involvement in Viet Nam was based on a fraud and he knew it The war was badly mishandled by Washington politicians which resulted in some men being held prisoner and tortured for seven years.

An amazing novel

Anna Karenina. She was an amazing woman. But no less amazing than the other characters in the novel. Tolstoy was a brilliant man and writer. He knows how to blend plot and thought like few others. After reading his novels, I am convinced that he was a keen observer of human nature and interactions. I believe he must have spent hours reflecting on why people act in the way they do. And the result, clear and penetrating novels on the human experience.

I highly recommend this novel. I feel enriched for having read something so well written. Just the way that Tolstoy mixes words leaves me with a feeling of awe. This novel is much more direct than War and Peace. He left his characters out of his writing in War and Peace, while he digressed about other topics. In this novel, digression sometimes happens in his dealings with Levin, but not as frequently as in War and Peace. The novel is great, the plot is fantastic. I see similarities to War and Peace everywhere. Natasha and Kitty. Levin and Nikolay. Tolstoy's dislike of the medical profession.

Embarrassment of riches

It's not necessary for me to repeat the high praise heaped upon ANNA KARENINA, which although slow-going in spots is nonetheless highly recommended by practically everyone, a world class read. But an argument is handy among those who would argue the merits of various translators and translations. Below are four of them with four representative passages from the opening paragraphs of this novel:

Constance Garnett (1901, with many revisions by others, many available for sale here, also for free online):
"the wife had discovered that the husband was carrying on an intrigue with a French girl,..."

(Introducing Prince Stephan Arkadyevich):
" -- Stiva, as he was known in the fashionable world -- "

"He turned over his stout, well-cared-for person on the springy sofa,"

Louise and Aylmer Maud (1918), available here as an Oxford World Classic:
"His wife had discovered an intrigue between her husband and the former French governess,..."

" -- Stiva, as he was called by his set in Society[note cap. "S"] -- "

"He turned his plump, well-kept body over on the springy sofa,"

David Magarshack (1961), Signet(Mass Market) Paperback [and this version]:
"The wife had found out that the husband had had an affair with the French governess,..."

"(Stiva, as he was called by his society friends),"

"He turned his plump, well-cared-for body on the springy sofa,..."

Peavar/Volokhonsky, 1991 (Penguin Classic and [same pagination, fancier cover] Oprah's Pick):
"The wife had found out that the husband was having an affair with the former French governess . . . "

" -- Stiva, as he was called in society -- "

"He rolled his full, well-tended body over the springs of the sofa,..."

The first thing to say is that these four quotations have a great deal more in common with each other than not. Nonetheless, there are differences: note that only two of the four mention that the object of Stiva's affection was a former employee. Despite several layers of revision, Garnett's translation, nearly a century old, at times slips into archaism: note the reference to high society as the "fashionable world," a term for which modern readers could be excused for construing something along the lines of couture, high fashion in clothing. Both the Garnett and the Maude version maintain the euphemism "intrigue" for "love-affair," while the two more recent translations keep to the more contemporary and less euphemistic "affair." In the Magarshack translation (1961), the use of the pluperfect in "the husband had had an affair" is technically correct, even today, but the P&V version with its "was having" just rolls by better to me.

Overall, though, of the four my personal favorite is the 1961 Magarshack translation, also the cheapest (but smallest in trim size). If I had to conduct a group discussion of ANNA KARENINA, though, I would almost cetainly gravitate to the much-better-distributed Peaver/Volokshonky edition because the differences or any presumed demerits, to me, are not as significant as granting the easiest accessibility to a group of individual readers. I could probably muddle through the archaisms in the Maude version -- it is the most reworked and in many respects the most solid, despite its age -- but I know I would have problems with the Constance Garrett.

The important thing to remember is that ANNA KARENINA is a book that demands to be read, and the reader who takes the time to read it fully will be well rewarded in vivid characterization, deft plotting, romance, social insight, and history, despite how one feels about the (sometimes exasperating) agrarian-political theorizing of Tolstoy's stand-in, Levin.

This book is great. I loved the stories of Jones and Collen mCSomething... I didn't enjoy two stories so that's the reason why I gave a 4 for this one...
