A different viewpoint on near-death experiences
By Robert Anderson
A study of near-death experiences written by a (then) atheist doctor who was "scared straight" after recessitating a patient who claimed to have been in hell while clinically dead.

The Good:
* Based on first-hand experiences of a doctor who actually recessitated patients who then recounted near-death experiences, some of them bad.
* He comes across as honest in his concern for people's souls. He doesn't want to "convert" people, but is genuinely concerned that some of us are headed for a hell-ish destiny. So it's not written from the same New Age "We're all going to Heaven" standpoint as most of todays NDE stuff.
* Purposely avoids drawing widespread conclusions based on incomplete information. Many NDE books extrapolate wildly about the after-life just because someone saw a bright light and felt loved.
* He genuinely wanted to warn people that not everyone has a good experience. He tries to gently compel the reader to consider Christianity - and does it in a non-judgemental, sensative way without bashing other faiths.

The Bad:
* Too short, - and half of the book is padding (historical views of death and even instructions for how to recessitate someone!)
* I appreciated that he didn't try to stuff answers down my throat, but the main drawback was that he didn't delve into the questions raised by these experiences. For example, he points out that even some who considered themselves Christians had hell-ish experiences - but he doesn't try to explain why or what was lacking in their faith or life.

Critically important information
By T.M. Reader
This is a short book written by a highly credentialed cardiologist. He also was a self-described atheist . . . until he stumbled onto the information which comprises the theme of this book: Life continues after bodily death, and a few people have a had a peek behind the curtain and have described what they saw.

Dr. Maurice Rawlings compiled the stories of the post-resuscitation experiences of his own, and other physicians', patients. CPR is a relatively young technique that has become widely familiar to even lay people during the last 30 years or so. Rawlings goes into possibly a little more detail on CPR than most of us are interested in. I suspect that is what some of the other critcal reviewers are referring to as "filler". I also found it boring.

The recountings of the "beyond death's door" experiences were riveting. They have great entertainment value, however when one considers the real life implications (or end of life, as it were), the result is profound and terrifying.

Make no mistake -- Dr. Rawlings is now what is referred to in American culture as a "Born Again Christian". He believes what he has written and he offers a simple, available solution: Belief and trust in the Jesus of the Bible. Rejection of Jesus results in passing on to hell after physical death. Rawlings is quite clear about this, and supports his belief using references from the Bible. I found his previous atheistic position, his systematic compilation of "experiences" for the book, and his subsequent conversion to a STRONG Christian position to be compelling.

Obviously, this talk of Christianity and such repels most unbelievers, and leaves many in a frothing at the mouth rage (see other reviews). However, the author has written transparently. Take it as you will, but as Rawlings presents it, THIS IS VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS.

He is not the best of writers, but he is adequate. He is apparently a competent scientist, and has done readers a great service by putting this book together.

I note criticisms from other reviewers that Rawlings did not fully develop some of the resuscitation stories, or did not explain why some "good" people, or churchgoers, seemed to have been headed to hell. Perhaps the answer is that the author did not attempt to embellish, or judge, but just report. By his own description, the survivors' memories of these experiences (especially the hellish ones) are fleeting and evaporate completely rather quickly.

Rawlings wrote a subsequent book, To Hell and Back. It contains much recycled material, is a little preachy, and contains perhaps MOSTLY filler. I do not recommend it. I do however highly recommend this book for anyone interested in examining and thinking about the life after death phenomenon . . . and shouldn't we all.

Utah Blaine: A Novel, by Louis L'Amour

Colonel Utah Blaine, held captive by the Army of the Revolution, broke out of jail and headed north from Mexico with nothing but the clothes on his back. Then he found new trouble struggling at the end of a noose–and stepped in just in time to save the life of a Texas rancher. The would-be executioners were the rancher’s own men, looking to steal his land.

Now Utah has a unique proposition: Have the wealthy Texan play dead, introduce himself as the spread’s new foreman, and take care of the outlaws one by one. The wage to fight another man’s war? A hundred a month plus expenses. The cost of falling in love while he earns that wage? It wasn’t exactly part of the original agreement, but Utah will soon find out–unless the bad guys get to him first.

Range War. Utah Blaine had escaped from a Mexican prison and was headed north on foot when he came upon a hanging. Now Blaine has a proposition: He'll ride to the rancher's land, take over as foreman of his outfit, and take on his enemies. Captures range-war violence and high-desert beauty.
By bigbook
A great L'Amour title, originally published in 1954 under the name Jim Mayo. As he did so often, L'Amour takes a stock dime-western situation, the range war, and weaves his story telling magic! The title character, a legendary town tamer, is very well fleshed out as he attempts to keep a pack of land-grabbing jackals from dividing up two of the largest, richest cattle ranches in Arizona. First they murder the owners...then the gang comes gunning for Blaine! Solid plot, great dialogue and some of L'Amour's best descriptive passages painting the rugged beauty of the mountains and valleys of the American Southwest.

Michael J. Blaine, Gunfighter
By Kay's Husband
This book was originally published by Ace books back in 1954 under the name Jim Mayo, when Louis was bridging the pulp western magazines of the day, while later moving into his long running contract with Bantam Books. The setting of the book is central Arizona in the Verde River Valley, pretty much between Blood Basin and the Mazatzal Mountains.

For the time of its writing, Utah Blaine is a very good book both in style and content. In general the book tells the story of Joe Neal's 46 Connected ranch and range of 300,000 prize acres of rangeland, with approximately 50,000 head of cattle on that range. An unsuccessful attempt is made on Joe's life, and later he is killed. The playing out of all the bad guys against the good guys, which at times number only 3, is the matrix of this western.

I'm an inveterate western reader, and in my humble opinion a reader just has to 'suspend the ole disbelief' when reading these shoot-em-ups. Louis was one of the best of western writers, but he had some equals, and a few even better. One thing that I did not care for in this western is the name of Utah Blaine's eventual girlfriend/wife: Angie Kinyon; that name is too close for me at least, to the later Ange Kerry with Tell Sackett, in a couple later Sackett novels.

Also, after "Rip" Coker has been gunshot, suffering 11 wounds, he is sidelined from the story. And at book's ending, we still are not told whether "Rip", will live or die, although it seems that he will pull through. Coker, as a Ranger, also appears in several of the Chick Bowdre Texas Ranger stories, too.

Another item is the cache of supplies and ammunition, Utah says that they will be stashed in three separate locations, but never, ever, gives us more than the one original location at Cypress Butte. And never does he resupply anywhere near Cypress Butte, in general most of his resupply comes from a couple of ranch houses.

Please do not, I repeat, DO NOT, take any of these as slams against the book. These are only incongruities that can exist in any number of Louis' books. I've read that at any one time he may have had as many as 4 typewriters going with a different story in each one. Would not be difficult to leave a few items ragged when swinging intermittenly from one typewritter to another.

Louis L'Amour wrote some fine, classic, western stories while many others of his are only 3-star jobs; however, in the main I find him to be one of the best. One reviewer here said just to skip this book, with that I cannot agree, for this is no better nor any worse than most 3 or 4 star westerns. And at present I have several thousand westerns on my shelves.

Read this one and enjoy, that is afterall, mainly why Louis spent his lifetime writing more than 100 of them.

Semper Fi.

Yes, this book is a perfect starting point if you are new to Louis L'amour. How do I know? Because this is the book that started me reading Louis oh so many years ago when I was in the fourth grade.

Utah Blaine is all Louis L'amour. It is high-action, fast-paced, and just plain good story-telling.

You won't be disappointed.

Poignant and honest first hand testimony of a Holocaust survivor that is difficult to put down.
By Ted A. Mcelroy
I absolutely could not put this poignant first hand testimony written by a Holocaust Survivor and was glued to this graphic and depressing first hand account of the horror of the Nazi Concentration Camps. I was able to read it from cover to cover in one afternoon and was left with a mix of emotions that is difficult to put into words. Not since the Diary of Anne Frank have I been so moved by an account of what the Jewish people suffered during the reign of the Third Reich and their horrible attempt to destroy an entire group of people.

I am still amazed about how some people still believe it didn't happen
By Gordon R. Thomas
Somehow I thought it was a longer dissertation, but instead was fairly brief compared to most books on this subject. If you want to learn more about the atrocities of the holocaust through a first person's eyes, and you don't want to spend too much time doing so, this is the book for you. I am still amazed about how some people still believe it didn't happen..but then again..some people stil believe the world is flat, and that dinosaurs lived with humans, man did not land on the moon, and that one of our new presidential candidates will make a good president..

Inspiring, horrifying, and real!
By Amazon Customer
I liked this book. I will not say I loved this book because the subject is too awful to be real. Reading this story I felt like that young boy asking "... Is this a dream..." It's hard for me, an infant of the 70's, a child of the 80's, a teen of the 90's, to believe that these atrocities ever occurred. I remember reading in history that Churchill/ Patton? (please correct me if I'm wrong) wanted pictures taken "... Because someday, there will be those who'll say 'this never happened'."
I feel for the survivors, their families. I worry for my children who will learn that great men like this author are less than current winners of this prestigious award. It is up to us, the third generation, the generation that makes or erases history, "to look into that young Jews eyes and say ... That we are not forgetting [them]. When their voices are stifled, we will lend them ours"
Here is my testimony in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

You find yourself believing in and following all 24 personalities! Sometimes forgetting that it's just one person!
The book absolutely flows smoothly from beginning to end and then some!
I hardly ever read books, but I chose this one because of my curiosity, my mothers psychotherapy counseling and because it's being made into a movie starring (hopefully) Leonardo DiCaprio!

"A horrifying journey into the human psyche!"
By Frank Tibbetts
Author Daniel Keyes has presented a very riveting description of the human condition if it is pushed too far. I have read this book twice and I have to say that it is one of the best books I have ever read.
Enduring unbelievably cruel tortures as a child at the hands of his stepfather, including sodomy and being forced to dig his own grave-and yes, being buried alive in that same grave, Billy Milligan's mind fragmented into 24 seperate and distinct personalities. I have posted the alter ego's below from this book, so that the potential reader can see how fantastic, and at the same time, how horrifying this man's condition was at the time of his arrest for several campus rapes, which he claimed he had no rememberance of committing.
1. Billy Milligan (William Stanley Milligan) is the core personality.
2. Arthur is a sophisticated Englishman. He is an expert in science and medicine. He is in "the spot when intellectual thinking is required.
3. Ragen Vadascovinich is the "keeper of hate". Ragen is Yugoslavian, has a Slavic accent and he can write and speak in Serbo-Croatian. He controls the spot when danger is immenent.
4. Allen is a con man and a manipulator. He is the most common person to talk to the outside world. He plays the drums and paints portraits. Also the only right-handed self. He is the only personality that smokes cigarettes.
5. Tommy is the escape artist; he is often confused with Allen. He plays the tenor sax and is an electronics expert. He is also a painter, specializing in landscapes.
6. Danny is afraid of people, especially men. He only paints still lifes, saying that this was because Chalmer made him dig his own grave and buried him in it.
7. David, age eight, is the "keeper of pain". He comes to the spot to take the pain of the others.
8. Christene, age three, was the one who would stand in the corner in school when "Billy" would get in trouble. She has dyslexia, but Arthur taught her to read and write. Ragen has a special bond with her.
9. Christopher, Christene's brother, plays the harmonica.
10. Adalana, a lesbian, cooks and cleans house for the others, and writes poetry. Milligan's attorney claimed that Adalana had admitted to committing the rapes without the knowledge of Milligan or the other alters
11. Phil is a thug and took part in planning some small time crimes. Has a Brooklyn accent. Marked due to him being a criminal.
12. Kevin is a criminal planner; he helped devise a plan to rob a drug store. Labeled also because he is a criminal.
13. Walter is Australian. He calls himself a big-game hunter and has an excellent sense of direction. Was often used as a spotter. He was labeled because he shot and killed a crow.
14. April only has thoughts about destroying Billy's stepfather. Declared an Undesirable when she convinced Ragen to kill Chalmer. Luckily though Arthur was able to talk him out of it at the last second.
15. Samual is the Jewish person. He is the only one who believes in God. Was marked because he sold some of the other people's personal paintings.
16. Mark is the workhorse. He is often referred to as the zombie because he does nothing unless he is told, and will stare at walls when bored.
17. Steve is the impostor, he uses imitations for comedy. Steve never accepted that he was an MP. He was made to be undesirable because his comedy caused the family problems.
18. Lee is the prankster and his practical jokes normally get the family into trouble. He does not care about consequences for his actions. He was made an undesirable because one of his jokes put them into solitary confinement.
19. Jason is the pressure valve. He was used at the beginning to release tension for the family, but he caused them to get into too much trouble and was marked as an undesirable.
20. Bobby always dreams of leading some adventure or fixing some global crisis, but he has no ambitions and was labeled due to that fact.
21. Shawn, who is four and deaf, makes buzzing sounds so he can feel the vibration in his head. He was labeled an undesirable because there was no benefit from being deaf later on in life. (Even though he is an undesirable he was never cast into the shadows beyond the spot; he was just never allowed to take the spot.)
22. Martin is a snob, from New York. He wants things just handed over to him without earning them.
23. Timothy worked in a florist shop until he encountered a homosexual who flirted with him. He went into his own world after that.
The Teacher
24. (Note: the teacher is not an Undesirable.) The Teacher, was by far the greatest milestone to helping Billy achieve fusion. He is the sum of all other 23 people put together, and has almost total recall of all the other people's actions and thoughts.
There are several pictures in this novel of exquisitely detailed paintings his personalities created while he was incarcerated that simply dumb-founds me.
I like this book because it is REAL. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has ever wondered how far the human mind will go to protect itself.

Ten plays by Euripides, the first playwright of democracy
By Lawrance Bernabo
Euripides was the youngest and the least successful of the great triad of Greek tragic poets. Criticized by the conservatives of his time for introducing shabby heroes and immoral women into his plays, his plays were ridiculed by Aristophanes in "The Frogs." His plays exhibited his iconoclastic, rationalizing attitude toward the ancient myths that were the subject matter for Greek drama. For Euripides the gods were irrational and petulant, while heroes had flawed natures and uncontrolled passions that made them ultimately responsible for their tragic fates. Ultimately, your standard Euripides tragedy offers meaningless suffering upon which the gods look with complete indifference (until they show up at the end as the deux ex machina). However, today Euripides is considered the most popular of the Greek playwrights and is considered by many to be the father of modern European drama.
This volume does not include all of the extant plays of Euripides (we believe he authored 92 plays, 19 of which have survived), but what are arguably the ten most important: "Alcestis," "Medea," "Hippolytus," "Andromache," "Ion," "Trojan Women," "Electra," "Iphigenia Among the Taurians," "The Bacchants," and "Iphigenia at Aulis." The translations by Moses Hadas and John McLean are not as literate as you will find elsewhere, but they are eminently functional and make this volume one of the most cost-effective ways of providing students an opportunity to study the work of a great dramatist.
After reading several Euripides tragedies several things emerge in our understanding of his work. First, he has a unique structure for his plays decidedly different from those of Aeschylus and Sophocles. Usually the play begins with a monologue that provides the necessary exposition regarding the situation with which the characters are confronted. At the end of the play a god usually descends from heaven to provide an epilogue to say what happens afterwards (e.g., "Hippolytus"). Second, Euripides is much more interested in the dynamic interaction of his characters than the role of the chorus. The stasimons and occasional monodies are more what exists between scenes for Euripides instead of an opportunity to comment upon the story as with Aeschylus (e.g., "Agamemnon"). Third, the idea that Euripides is a misogynist just does not bear up under even a basic reading of these plays. This misconception might stem from our understanding of the culture of the times, because the "worst" thing you can say about the women of Euripides is that they are realistic characters.
Fourth and most importantly, clearly Euripides is at his best when there is a political agenda embedded in his story. "The Trojan Women" offers a fascinating counterpoint to the reactions of those same characters at the end of the "Iliad" when Hector's body is returned to Troy, but Euripides is not concerned with commenting on Homer but rather on the Athenian destruction of the city of Melos, which had tried to stay neutral in the Peloponnesian War (compare this with Euripides in a patriotic mode in "Andromache"). Much more is made of Euripides irreverence towards the gods (e.g., "The Bacchants"), however I think his greatness lies not in being an atheist but in being a strong advocate of democratic principles (e.g., the treatment of foreigners at the heart of "Medea"). Hadas reinforces this latter idea in his translations, admitting that for the modern reader it might be better to think of Euripides "as a pamphleteer rather than a poet." Still, Hadas emphasizes that despite the parodies provided by Aristophanes, Euripides was a great poet. Furthermore, Hadas is committed to keeping the translations as poetry rather than prose.
But there is also a sense in which Euripides provides psychological insights into his characters as much as Sophocles, who usually gets the edge in that respect because Freud derived the Oedipal and Electra complexes from his writings. Even though there was a limit of only three characters on stage at a time, Euripides would often made one of these characters, such as the nurse in "Hippolytus" or Pylades (friend of Orestes in both "Electra" and "Iphigenia Among the Taurains"), a normal person, who served as a means for showing the profoundly disturbed nature of the tragic hero.
Reading a single Euripides play is not going to make the validity of any or all of these points clear, but if you read most of these ten plays you should come to similar conclusions. I still like to use Euripides in bracket Homer's "Iliad," looking at the way he presages the conflict between Achilles and Agamemnon in "Iphigenia at Aulis," and the fate of "The Trojan Women," but there is much value to studying the plays of Euripides on their own terms. Granted, you can find better (i.e., more "modern") translations, but finding ten Euripides plays in one volume is going to be impossible and/or expensive.

Excellent translations. The best Medea I've ever read.
By realrachel@aol.com
I am a theatre director and playwright. I read every translation of Medea I could find. This 1998 translation by Roche, after twenty years of ripening, is fresh, clear, and strong. He prioritized retaining the ( ( ( s o u n d ) ) ) of the ancient greek, and his poet's ear captured its slippery almost-iambic trimeter perfectly. A powerful, haunting, contemporary translation. "Deep is her sobbing from depths of pain/ Shrill is the answer her suffering gives/ To the news of a woman betrayed/ A love gone wrong..." A mature poet's text, translated by an equally sensitive poet. It doesn't get any better than this.

Best translation I've read!
By K Priest
I'm an acting teacher, and this is the best translation I've come across. It's very readable and actable. Most other translations take a formal equivalency approach but this one is more dynamic equivalency. For an acting student, the text is immediate and realistic rather than awkward.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Bantam Classics), by Mark Twain

Sparkling with mischief, jumping with youthful adventure, Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer is one of the most splendid re-creations of childhood in all of literature. It is a lighthearted romp, full of humor and warmth. It shares with its sequel, Huckleberry Finn, not only a set of unforgettable characters--Tom, Huck, Aunt Polly and others--but a profound understanding of humanity as well. Through such hilarious scenes as the famous fence-whitewashing incident, Twain gives a portrait--perceptive yet tender--of a humanity rendered foolish by his own aspirations and obsessions. Written as much for adults as for young boys and girls, Tom Sawyer is the work of a master storyteller performing in his shirt sleeves, using his best talents to everyone's delight.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-British actor Mike McShane provides a superb portrayal of Mark Twain's classic characters, nailing the Mississippi drawl and cadence. For those who know and love the story or are following along with an unabridged edition, however, this production is marred somewhat by what the publisher has chosen to leave out. The more descriptive chapters are shortened or expurgated entirely, which is understandable in the interest of editing for time. Some of the more distasteful racial epithets are gone as well, although Injun Joe retains his moniker. Sid and Mary are also cut entirely, as well as references to smoking, slavery, most of Tom's ludicrously funny romantic notions about the violence inflicted by pirates and robbers, and even the naked figure in the schoolmaster's anatomy book. The result is a watered down Tom and, especially, Huck. The ending also lacks the satisfaction of the original version. The party scene where the fortune is revealed has been cut as has Twain's concluding paragraphs which "endeth this chronicle." It lacks even the closure of the customary, "You have been listening to-." The sturdy plastic case will survive many circulations. If your facility serves an elementary-age population for which the language of the original would not be appropriate, or there is a teacher looking for a sanitized version, McShane's excellent performance makes this edition worth recommending.

From Library Journal
Huckleberry Finn may be the greater book, but Tom Sawyer has always been more widely read. Moreover, it is a book that can be enjoyed equally by both children and adults. Twain, who called it a "hymn" to boyhood, would be thrilled that in narrator Patrick Fraley his hymn has found its most passionate voice. Many good unabridged readings of Tom Sawyer have already been recorded, but most are simply that: readings. Fraley's performance is something more; in attempting to bring each character to life, his enthusiasm for the material is so palpable that the mere sound of his voice commands attention. A can't-miss addition to all libraries, including those that have other Tom Sawyer programs. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CA

From Booklist
Gardner’s reading of Twain’s classic convinces us why certain titles remain in the pantheon of must-reads (and must-listens). Gardner’s resonant tones roll over the rich, extensive vocabulary, almost as if Twain himself were telling the story. He reads the varying country dialects in a natural manner, conveying Tom’s spunkiness and quick wit. He uses higher pitches for the female characters, imparting an innocent breathiness into Becky Thatcher’s dialogue and a solid, forthrightness into Aunt Polly’s. Although the nineteenth-century language and syntax may seem a bit arcane, the delightful audio enables kids to enjoy this compelling tale, which might seem daunting in book form. The cover art depicting Tom and a friend whitewashing the fence is appealing. Grades 5-8. --Patricia Austin

Judge this book by it's cover!
By A. Frank
This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:
I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire.
This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.
I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain.
Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

This edition is not abridged!
By Diana
I just want to point out that this hardcover Everyman's Library edition is not abridged. Most of the reviews posted here apply to the Signet mass market edition, which apparently is abridged. The Everyman's edition contains both novels in full.

Incomplete: Missing Passages

This edition is missing some passages from the original works. For example, there are about three pages missing (as measured from a paperback copy) from Chapter 21 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

WOW!!!
By Katie
This is the 2nd book I've read by this author, and I've been greatly inspired by both. Mr. Mandino is an amazing writer! He's able to weave important insights throughout his fictional tales, and keeps the reader on their toes - not wanting to the put the book down until it's finished.

The overall gist of this book is that we all have choices re: what we do, how we do it, and how we react to the circumstances we find ourselves in - and it's these choices (sometimes seemingly mudane) that determine the life we live today, as well as our potential future.

This seems to be a concept that many of us have forgotten - we do, in fact, have choices! It's up to us to choose wisely, and to correct the choices we're not happy with. But, either way, we must take responsibility for whatever our choices are - and where they lead us.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in changing any part of their life, as well as those trying to help others to understand the impact of their choices - this book provides a wonderful story to share with those who are currently struggling.

Aeneas flees the ashes of Troy to found the city of Rome and change forever the course of the Western world--as literature as well.  Virgil's Aeneid is as eternal as Rome itself, a sweeping epic of arms and heroism--the searching portrait of a man caught between love and duty, human feeling and the force of fate--that has influenced writers for over 2,000 years.  Filled with drama, passion, and the universal pathos that only a masterpiece can express. Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum!
By kevin m antonio
With Robert Fagles's version of 'The Aeneid' just released, I thought that would be the version I would be reading. I tried Robert Fitzgerald's version some years ago, but I gave up after the 5th or 6th "book".

After reading the numerous glowing reviews for Allen Mandelbaum's translation, I thought I would give it a shot.... plus it cost a lot less than Fagles's! I was not disappointed.

Mr. Mandelbaum's take on Virgil's epic is eminently accessible, very easy to understand (but not dumbed down at all). The glossary at the end is a huge help in identifying characters and places (as many of them go by more than one name).

This is a thrilling tale full of adventure, romance, war, friendship and loyalty. If you buy only one version, this is the one to get.

Solid rendering
By SeanG
This is a very good English verse rendering of Virgil's classic. If you like epic poetry but can't read classical languages this translation is probably the next best thing. Though nothing compares to the original this is a faithful translation, and the verse makes for a more interesting presentation than prose.
This is a "no frills" volume (hence the price), so it is best for readers who already know the basic premise of The Aeneid and the main characters. It has a basic glossary that may be a useful refresher for knowledge already acquired, but it lacks the translator's introduction that typically sets the stage (both for the plot and the poem's place in history) and triples the price in other volumes.

I sing of a good translation
By FrKurt Messick
Roman society was enamoured of Greek culture -- many of the best 'Roman' things were Greek; the major gods were derivative of the Greek pantheon; philosophy, literature, science, political ideals, architecture -- all this was adopted from the Greeks. It makes sense that, at the point of their ascendancy in the world, they would long for an epic history similar to the Homeric legends; the Iliad and the Odyssey, written some 500 years after the actual events they depict, tell of the heroism of the Greeks in their battle against Troy (Ilium). The Aeneid, written by Vergil 700 years after Homer, at the commission of Augustus (himself in the process of consolidating his authority over Rome), turns the heroic victory of the much-admired Greeks on its head by postulating a survivor from Troy, Aeneas, who undergoes as journey akin to the Odyssey, even further afield.

Vergil constructs Aeneas, a very minor character in the Iliad, as the princely survivor and pilgrim from Troy, on a journey through the Mediterranean in search of a new home. According to Fitzgerald, who wrote a brief postscript to the poem, Vergil created a Homeric hero set in a Homeric age, purposefully following the Iliad and Odyssey as if they were formula, in the way that many a Hollywood director follows the formulaic pattern of past successful films. Vergil did not create the Trojan legend of Roman origins, but his poem solidified the notion in popular and scholarly sentiment.

Vergil sets the seeds for future animosity between Carthage and Rome in the Aeneid, too -- the curse of queen Dido on the descendants of Aeneas of never-ending strife played into then-recent recollections of war in the Roman mind. Books I through VI are much more studied than VII through XII, but the whole of the Aeneid is a spectacular tale.

Mandelbaum's translation is poetic and stately, giving grace and life to the epic poem. Sometimes long-form poetry can become overblown in self-indulgence; Mandelbaum's translation avoids this by writing in free verse for the most part. There are no forced rhymes and schemes that detract from the story line. Word choice is contemporary and engaging.

Vergil died before he could complete the story. He wished it to be burned; fortunately, Augustus had other ideas. Still, there are incomplete lines and thoughts, and occasional conflicts in the storyline that one assumes might have been worked out in the end, had more editing time been available. Despite these, the Aeneid remains a masterpiece, and Mandelbaum's translation will likely be a companion for students and other readers for a long time to come.

David Brin's Uplift novels are among the most thrilling and extraordinary science fiction ever written.  Sundiver, Startide Rising, and The Uplift War--a New York Times bestseller--together make up one of the most beloved sagas of all time.  Brin's tales are set in a future universe in which no species can reach sentience without being "uplifted" by a patron race.  But the greatest mystery of all remains unsolved: who uplifted humankind?

The Terran exploration vessel Streaker has crashed in the uncharted water world of Kithrup, bearing one of the most important discoveries in galactic history.  Below, a handful of her human and dolphin crew battles armed rebellion and a hostile planet to safeguard her secret--the fate of the Progenitors, the fabled First Race who seeded wisdom throughout the stars.

From Publishers Weekly
In its original paperback editon of 1983, this novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Brin's extensive revisions make this first hardcover edition an SF event. What remains most impressive is the complex background of political, cultural, linguistic and many other connections and missed connections among innumerable different species. Against the backdrop of an ancient spacefaring conglomerate, whose shared traditions have not halted their wars, the upstart Earthlingshumans, dolphins, chimpanzeesalso stand divided. Brin raises questions not only of understanding but of ethics, for a "patron" race may genetically uplift another only to indenture them. His depiction of the dolphins' gains and losses now that they've become space pilots is particularly moving. Although Brin's characterization and storytelling are less adept here than in the work he has since written, this is one of the outstanding SF novels of recent years. November 22

Book 2 of a Great Saga
By illiandantic
Currently, there are six books in Brin's Uplift saga. It's kind of hard to categorize these books as elements of a series, though. The first three books in the saga, "Sundiver," "Startide Rising," and "The Uplift War," are not really a trilogy or a series in the normal sense. Instead, "Sundiver" relates to the rest of the saga as Tolkien's "The Hobbit" relates to his "Lord of the Rings:" it sets the stage for all the rest of the books in the saga. "Startide Rising" and "The Uplift War" describe completely different plotlines originating from the same event far distant, time wise and space wise, from "Sundiver". In a pinch, you could read these books in any order and not really miss anything. They describe different points in time and space of the same Universe. Of course, the best order is the one listed, above.

Unlike the first three books in the saga, the second three books DO form a series. The first of this trilogy, "Brightness Reef," picks up with yet another totally independent plotline and brand new characters. However, it does contain a central character who ties the first three books into this set. Unfortunately, Brin doesn't say, specifically, who that character is until the very end of the book. Even worse, the last time the character was used was so far back in the saga that it's hard to remember anything about him. The remaining two books, "Infinity's Shore" and "Heaven's Reach," continue sequentially from the first and form a tightly knit trilogy with no breaks in time.

None of these books is "happy" or "light reading." For the most part, they're all intense, heavily detailed and fully characterized books. "Sundiver" is the least "heavy" and most lacking in the realistic feel of the rest of the books. But, for the most part, if you like "Sundiver," you'll definitely want to continue with the rest of the saga. Even if you don't like "Sundiver," I highly recommend you read at least "Startide Rising:" it has an entirely different feel to it and might be more to your liking. This saga is just too important to miss out on. As a whole, it's one of the great works of science fiction and one of the few pieces of science fiction that belong in the class of true literature.

The following are some comments on the individual books:

Sundiver: Somewhat different from the other books in the saga in that it's more of a science fiction mystery than a science fiction drama. This book sets the stage for the rest of the saga as it chronicles events that happen several hundred years before what happens in the other books. About the only thing negative I can come up with is that I wish Brin had written several prequels to it so we could read about the earlier adventures of Jacob Demwa that are referenced in this book.

Startide Rising: This book focuses on the group that starts all the other events noted in the remaining books of the saga. Though the main characters start off in a very bad way, Brin does a good job of moving them forward, and upward, throughout the book.

The Uplift War: The events in this book start from the same event that kicks off "Startide Rising." But, other than that, the two books are totally independent. Like "Startide Rising," Brin produced a gripping plot, great character development, and a good progression towards a positive goal.

Brightness Reef: This is definitely not a happy book. It starts out with many non-pleasant activities and fights its way forward from there. The biggest problem I have with it is that it's very hard to see how anything good or positive is going to happen to the main characters, no matter how much they try.

Infinity's Shore: First, the negative: once this book starts, it's very apparent that a whole lot of relevant stuff has been happening elsewhere that we missed. Essentially, there's at least one entire book that sounds extremely interesting that's missing from the saga. Brin fills in most of this back-story during this book and "Heaven's Reach." But, I'd sure like to have read that missing book. On the positive side, this book re-introduces us to old friends and subtly changes the focus to them. Everything's still happening in the same place with mostly the same characters, but the attitude changes and becomes more can-do.

Heaven's Reach: One difficulty with this book is due to how it continues from the previous book. It's merely a change of venue instead of a new set of adventures. A quote from one of the main characters near the end of this book sort of sums up my feelings about it: "...what will one more worry matter? I've long passed the point where I stopped counting them." Essentially, by the time this book and saga starts winding down (and even at the point of that quotation, it really hasn't started that yet), the reader is totally fatigued by never-ending problems. I really like these works, but the lack of a tie-up between "Infinity's Shore" and this book is grinding.

With Brightness Reef out, time to reread this great classic!
By A Customer
Let me give you two great reasons to buy and read this book. First, Startide Rising is probably the best space opera ever written. Some of Iain Banks' "Culture" novels come close, but let's not quibble. Second, it will be a great introduction to a series now resuming with the just-out book, Brightness Reef. Startide Rising is sometimes called the second in Brin's first uplift universe trilogy, but that is misleading. The novel Sundiver is Brin's first book in the uplift universe (where the practice of "uplifting" near sentient species to full sentience is considered a rite of passage to full citizenship in a galactic culture, and where only humans appeared to rise to sentience on their own without a "patron" race, giving them a special status). But one does not need to have read Sundiver, a lesser novel, to read Startide Rising. Similarly, the action in the third "uplift" book, The Uplift War, is unrelated to events in either Sundiver or Startide. The "new" uplift trilogy now unfolding (beginning with Brightness Reef), however, will be a true trilogy, with none of the books standing on their own. It is an open secret, furthermore, that events in Startide Rising (and possibly The Uplift War) will eventually come to play in the new uplift trilogy. So get this book, read it, read The Uplift War (heck, read Sundiver, too), and, hopefully, by that time Brin will have come close to finishing the unfolding new uplift trilogy -- some who have recently read Brightness Reef have expressed their frustration that the book leaves them hanging, as if in mid-sentence

Not Just Another Trilogy Segment
By A Customer
I'll admit from the start I have an ax to grind. I have been
weary for years of the "trilogy" concept in the science
fiction and fantasy genres. Ever since Tolkien's classic Lord
of the Rings, it seems every successful new author
in the field has been forced to shoehorn their works into a
trilogy or series format. Each subsequent book becomes
dependent, both story-wise and commercially, on the
previous books. Sometime this works, but just as often
a good novel simply gets stretched into a weak trilogy or
series.

With Startide Rising, David Brin completely breaks this mold.
Each novel in his fascinating Uplift series stands on its own.
No time is wasted connecting the story lines of each book,
nor are readers left wondering "what's going on?" because
they haven't read the previous books. Brin simply tells
his story, and tells it exceedingly well.

Most modern SF/Fantasy series leave the reader thinking, "What
a great story, I can't wait to hear the end,"... but the end
may never come. Anne McCaffrey's "Pern" series comes to mind.
The early books are memorable and excellent, and seem to have been
written for their own sake. But the later
books seem to be part of a contrived (and seemingly endless) series, and
each subsequent book becomes less and less satisfying. And don't
even get me started on Frank Herbert's "Dune" series....

On the other hand, Brin leaves the reader thinking, "What a great story. Tell me another!"
Startide Rising is Brin's best work, worthy of every award it has received.
Read it, and you will be delighted and satisfied. But be warned: you will then want
to read everything else he has written.

On a final note: I wouldn't want to leave the impression
that I think no trilogy is worth reading, especially since
Brin's latest Uplift novel, Brightness Reef, is the first installment of a "true"
trilogy. A trilogy is a larger work than a novel, and allows
telling a greater story. If any author is capable of
meeting the full challenge of the trilogy format, David Brin is, and
the Uplift universe contains a story of mighty proportions.
Let us hope the eight-year hiatus in the series has been spent
preparing a bigger story which can, like the others, stand
on its own. But read Startide Rising and the other books of the first
"trilogy" first. It will make the new trilogy all the more
meaningful, and all the more excruciating to wait out.
