About the Author
Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies in 1757, the illegitimate child of a Scottish merchant. He came to the American colonies to study at King’s College (now Columbia University), and became an early and ardent supporter of the Revolutionary cause. During the Revolutionary War he was aide-de-camp to George Washington and a member of the Continental Congress. He was a leading figure at the Constitutional Convention (1787) and a principal author of The Federalist Papers. At first Secretary of the Treasury he articulated a policy of protection for manufacturing interests, strong central government, and establishment of a national bank. After leaving the Cabinet, he practiced law in New York. His personal attacks hindered the political career of the volatile Aaron Burr, who finally challenged him to a duel in 1804. Hamilton was shot, and died of his wounds.
John Jay (1747-1829) was a conservative lawyer who became a leading patriot. He was a minister to Spain (1780-82), the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1789-95), and he negotiated the treaty of 1795 between the U.S. and Britain. His contributions to The Federalist Papers concern foreign affairs.
James Madison was born in 1751, the son of a Virginia planter. He worked for the Revolutionary cause as a member of the Continental Congress and the Virginia House of Delegates. The leader of deliberations at the Constitutional Convention, he fought for the adoption of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Through an ally of Hamilton on the Constitution he was a supporter of Jefferson’s agrarian policies. He was Jefferson’s Secretary of State (1801-9) and his successor as president (1809-17), but his presidency was marred by the unpopular War of 1812. Madison died in 1836

No table of contents?

This free Kindle edition of The Federalist (listing James Madison as first author) has a rather significant shortcoming: it has no table of contents. Since one generally reads the essays in The Federalist by topic (e.g. Federalist No. 10, or No. 51), the lack of a navigation tools is a real shortcoming. Fortunately, the free Amazon edition that lists John Jay as the first author does have a navigable table of contents that jumps directly to the desired essay.
The formatting of this (Madison) edition is also a bit odd. In the heading for each essay, rather than using bold font for the number or the topic, the only words appearing in bold is the author's name. That said, if you simply want to read the essays from front to back, this one will do the trick.

The Constitution explained

What a blessing to have an as-it-was-happening commentary on The Constitution of the United States. We have the Constitution’s author, James Madison, “defense” of the Constitution. And knowing that the Supreme Court has cited The Federalist Papers in its decisions gives them additional credence.
Each provision of the Constitution is explained and defended. Historical facts about previous governments are reasons for specific provisions. Brilliant men of the Enlightenment created a new type of republic. This new government, created in a time of peace, would depend upon and require rational thought instead of unpredictable monarchs/oligarchs reacting to public convulsions.
I am struck by papers #42 thru #47. They define the shared power between the Sovereign States and the proposed federal Union; this tension is nearly gone today. Paper #68 explains the original (and now abandoned) Electoral College. And, paper #10 warns us that “democracies are short in life and end violently”.
The republic born in 1791 (with the Bill of Rights) is unique in human history. A miracle! Today, the US is a shadow of itself. What does a republic deriving its power from the consent of WE THE PEOPLE look like? Read the Federalist Papers.

Check the publisher before you buy, the reviews associated with the Books LLC publication are from another version

There are different versions of this book available, and somehow Books LLC has managed to get the reviews associated with a better quality imprint associated with their book. BE WARNED. Books LLC is a wing of a company called VDM Publishing which, among other things, specialises in automated scanning in of copyright-free books, they print these cheaply, with no editing, no checking the text, there own website says there may be missing pages and they do no manual checking, there's no table of contents. Etc. The Books LLC version is basically VERY low quality.
Check carefully what you're buying or you may end up with a book that surprises you. If you have been taken in and ended up with one of these books from "Books LLC", Amazon will take Returns within 30 days (check there Returns Policy first....).
