Three Tales of Death and Deduction
By George R Dekle
Nero Wolfe may be enjoyed through the media of print, audio, and video--in print courtesy of Bantam Books; on audio courtesy of Durkin Hayes, Radio Spirits, and Books on Tape; and on video courtesy of A&E Network. It's hard to say which way gives the most pleasure. As much as I like the A&E shows, and as much as I like Durkin Hayes' editions of the CBC radio shows, I think the best way to enjoy Nero Wolfe is in print. And the best way to enjoy him in print is in Rex Stout's novelettes. The novels are good, but the novelettes are tauter, faster-paced, and funnier. "Three Witnesses" serves up three very good novelettes. In "The Next Witness" Wolfe sits uncomfortably in a crowded courtroom, under subpoena, and waiting to give truthful testimony which he expects will materially contribute to the conviction for murder of an innocent man. What to do, what to do? Flee the courtroom, dodge the arrest warrant issued for contempt of court, and bring the real murderer to justice before the judge can bang his gavel down on a sentence of imprisonment for contempt. That sounds easy enough, doesn't it? In "When a Man Murders", a millionaire returns from the dead to retrieve the fortune which was divided among his heirs and reclaim the "widow" who has entered into a much happier second marriage. The "widow" comes to Wolfe for his assistance in obtaining a divorce from her recently resurrected spouse. Not to worry, he almost immediately dies again, but the widow's new husband is arrested for murder. Wolfe must penetrate a web of lies to determine who among the heirs had the most to gain from the millionaire's second death. In "Die Like a Dog" an improbable chain of coincidences brings Nero Wolfe together with Nero the Labrador Retriever. Together they unravel a murder mystery, reunite a couple, and retrieve Archie Goodwin's raincoat. "Die Like a Dog" and "The Next Witness" have both been televised on the A&E series.

A trio of excellent short stories
By Michele L. Worley
To date (beginning of season 2), 2 of the 3 stories herein have been adapted by A&E with Maury Chaykin as Wolfe; the TV series is extremely faithful to the original stories.
"The Next Witness" - (Adapted for _Nero Wolfe_'s 2nd season.) Wolfe makes a point of never leaving home on business, but alas, subpoenas are an occupational hazard for private investigators, and even Wolfe can't always shuffle them off onto Archie, even when the defendant never made it to the status of client.
Wolfe didn't deliver Leonard Ashe to the law; he rejected Ashe as a client because he won't touch marital squabbles. Ashe is being tried for the murder of one of the operators of his telephone answering service, apparently after a failed attempt to bribe her to tap his wife's calls. Wolfe, after hearing the testimony of preceding witnesses, skips out on the subpoena, taking Archie along, having become convinced that Ashe is innocent, though he doesn't at first explain why. See if you can deduce his reasons before the grand finale.
When Wolfe finally does take the stand quite a while later (now, of course, facing contempt of court), he has a diabolically clever plan to get his new evidence before the jury. Enjoy.
When a Man Murders... - Sydney Karnow had wealth, a sardonic sense of humor, a nice wife, and a pack of sponging relatives. A year after his marriage, he volunteered for army service in the Korean War, and was reported dead within a year, leaving his fortune divided between his wife (50%) and the spongers (50% divided 3 ways), so all were well provided for if not filthy rich.
Now, 3 years later, he's come back *alive* - two years after Caroline's remarriage to Paul Aubry. They used her inheritance to start an automobile agency, but the money didn't bring them to Wolfe - their problem is that their marriage is now invalid. (They're willing to concede anything about the money in exchange for a simple divorce.) Paul can't bring himself to speak with Karnow directly, and Karnow's lawyer won't get involved, so they're approaching Wolfe to act as intermediary.
Ordinarily Wolfe won't touch any case related to marital squabbles, but he's willing in this instance. Unfortunately, when Archie enters Karnow's hotel room at the Churchill, he's dead again, this time for keeps. Did Paul or Caroline try to hire Wolfe as a bluff? Or did one of the spongers (some of whom haven't *got* the money to repay the estate anymore) panic? Or was it something they don't know about yet?
"Die Like a Dog" - This has always been a favourite of mine, and I was very pleasantly surprised when A&E adapted it for _Nero Wolfe_'s 2nd season. A black Labrador literally follows Archie home, and not only retrieves his windblown hat, but turns out to be named 'Nero' (part of a much longer kennel-club name on his collar, but how could Archie resist?)
Unfortunately, the unannounced (even if temporary) introduction of a dog into the hallowed halls of the brownstone backfires in a totally unexpected manner, which you'll have to read/see to believe. :) The *dog* turns out to be a possible witness in a murder investigation, but how the heck can anybody learn anything from him?

In which Nero leaves the house, handles a messy divorce case and gets a dog!
By Jeanne Tassotto
Nero Wolfe has many eccentricities, his orchids, his rigid schedule, his obsessive reading to name a few. Very prominent on this list is that Wolfe rarely leaves the house, NEVER handles divorce cases, and is opposed to animals in his house. In this collection of three novellas all of the above and more occur.

THE NEXT WITNESS is the first story. Nero Wolfe has been summoned to court as a witness in a murder trial. This has necessitated him to abandon his routine, travel in a car, sit in court (next to a woman wearing perfume!) and just when the end of this torment is in sight Wolfe walks out of court. Now a fugitive himself he, and Archie set out to solve the case in a more satifactory manner so Nero can return home. This is hilarious, Wolfe becomes involved in many unusual (for him) situations that he reacts to as only Nero Wolfe could or would.

WHEN A MAN MURDERS.... finds Nero and Archie confronted with a low bank balance and two eager clients which Wolfe would prefer to dismss since the case involves divorce. Still the details are intriguing enough to look into and soon this simple matter becomes one of death and deception.

The final work - DIE LIKE A DOG begins with Archie out on a simple errand. A would be client has taken Archie's raincoat by mistake so Archie go the man's apartment and retrieve his coat. When he arrives at the address he discovers that the situation has been complicated by the man's murder, he leaves in order to avoid dealing with the police but discovers that he has been followed home, by a dog. Archie then decides to have a little fun at Wolfe's expense before locating the dog's owner. Soon however the trio - Archie, Nero and the dog find themselves deeply involved in the case and with no client.

These are particularly funny entries into this long running series. Wolfe is thrust into many situations that he would very much prefer to avoid. Fans are treated to many juicy little tidbits about life in the brownstone and even a fleeting glimpse into Wolfe's mysterious past. The mysteries themselves, although somewhat secondary to the cozy/comic elements in these stories, are very clever, fairly laid out and challenge to reader to solve them before Nero reveals all.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich (Bantam Classics), by Leo Tolstoy

Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face to face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth?

This short novel was the artistic culmination of a profound spiritual crisis in Tolstoy's life, a nine-year period following the publication of Anna Karenina during which he wrote not a word of fiction. A thoroughly absorbing and, at times, terrifying glimpse into the abyss of death, it is also a strong testament to the possibility of finding spiritual salvation.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In the lovely, low tones of a fine storyteller, Oliver Fox Davies guides us through the stages of Tolstoy's mini masterpiece. Davies's skill with inflection, even within words, heightens the social satire of the early section and shifts with Ilyich's slide into ever increasing pain and irritability. With the terror and anguish of approaching death, his voice grows convincingly hoarse. Until his illness, Ivan Ilyich had never reflected on his life. But he slowly comes to see his life as a terrible, huge deception which had hidden life and death. As he lays dying, his lifelong friends think of the promotions that may come their way, and his wife began to wish he would die, but she didn't want him to die because then his salary would cease. He has always avoided human connection, but through the tender ministrations of a peasant he comes to recognize the mesh of falsity in which he's lived. Written more than a century ago, Tolstoy's work still retains the power of a contemporary novel. (Jan.)

Highly recommend
By planosue
I had previously never read Tolstoy's classic book. It is a very short read (finished in an hour or so) More short story than full blown novel. I came across the book while looking for something on the topic of "death and dying" for a friend (age 58) recently diagnosed with a fatal disease. I wanted a book that might help her gain perspective of how to deal with the awful news of her own impending death. Though this book does not meet the needs of my friend (Tolstoy's descriptions of Ivan's final hours are very graphic), it did offer a useful perspective for me in how to give support to my dying friend. Few of us think much about how we will die much less about when... much too morbid in modern society. So often, we live life as if there is no ending (as Tolstoy's Ivan did). For those of us (including my friend) who are forced to address death as a very short term prospect, there may be ways to gain peace of mind free of agitation and disturbance. Tolstoy's wonderful little book points this out. I give this book 4 stars because, compared to other classical literature of its genre, it is very good... but it is not the most excellent literature in genre.

Live before you realize it is too late to fulfil your dreams.
By Ivo Skopal
Sometimes we just forget whether we are living the life we've always wanted or whether we are living to meet the expectations of the others. The book is about our life, our dreams and our happiness. And how easily we give up on all this to follow the things we all think "should be done" just because everyone else do these and seem to be happy. Right? We all live in the world full of prejudices, lies and disappointments. And we also realize far too late that all these were created by ourselves, in our heads, because we were taught this way. Read this book and I believe that at least for a while you will have strong feeling to change something in your life before it is too late. Great book and great ideas.

Great Intro to Spirituality vs. Materialism
By Charles Tobler
Thoughtful meditation on "what is a life well-lived," with a powerful spiritual conversion at the end. The writing is insightful and concise, and the book moves quickly. True, the novel is a bit dated, as are the class criticisms of the "bourgeois" lifestyle, but the emphasis of the importance of the spiritual over the material is a timeless theme. I would call this novella a must-read.

Buried Dreams, by Tim Cahill

This account examines the case of John Wayne Gacy, a successful and respected member of the community who cheered up sick children in hospital dressed as a clown, but who was also one of the most prolific serial killers in criminal history. Inside his scrupulously tidy suburban home, in 1978 police found the remains of 29 teenaged boys, all brutally tortured, violated and strangled. The author explores the complex personality, compulsions, inadequacies and torments of a profoundly disturbed human being.

From Publishers Weekly
This is the absorbing and disturbing story of John Wayne Gacy, the suburban Chicago businessman sentenced to death in 1980 for the murders of 33 young boys, most of whose bodies were buried in the crawlspace under his home. Cahill, aided in his research by TV reporter Ewing, recreates Gacy's unhappy childhood with a violent father; his seemingly respectable life as a successful contractor and civic leader; and his five-year spree as a murderer who raped and tortured his victims. The book is told mainly from the vantage of the homosexual Gacy, a "creature of lies, internal contradictions, misrepresentations, and false idealism," who claims utter confusion over the crimes. Jurors dismissed an insanity plea, finding Gacy complex, antisocial and rational. Cahill includes graphic accounts of torture and sexual acts. Major ad/promo; first serial to Us magazine; author tour.

From Library Journal
John Gacy, sentenced to death for the Chicago-area slayings of 33 young men, has been the subject of prior bookssee, for example, Terry Sullivan's Killer Clown ( LJ 9/1/83). None, however, has explored the depths of Gacy's aberrant psychology, his childhood, and daily life as well as Buried Dreams. With Gacy's cooperation, albeit often contradictory and self-serving, and a four-year-long investigation, Cahill has managed the difficult task of unmasking, to the extent that it can be done, the motivation of a horrific killer. Readers should be warned that this book contains explicit details of sexual torture and murder. It is as riveting as it is disturbing. Gregor A. Preston, Univ. of California Lib., Davis

Best book on Gacy
By midwest bookworm
I don't know how anyone my age or near my age who grew up in Chicago or the outlying suburbs could not remember the Gacy case. I had just turned 14 and was a freshman in high school when news first broke of his crimes. I remember my mother turning off the television for the 5:00 PM local news because of the lurid footage showing the remains being carried out of the house in bags. And I remember the Chicago Tribune running a full page showing individual pictures of all of the identified victims; the yearbook and school pictures of the boys looked like most of my classmates.

I first read this book back in 1987. I recently read it again, almost 20 years later, and I still believe it to be the most thorough, comprehensive book on Gacy. Cahill, an excellent journalist, has done an excellent job of presenting a complete picture of the man and his crimes. He managed to "get inside Gacy's head" (an unhealthy place) to give the reader a clear look of Gacy's personality, views on life, attitude towards his victims and reactions to his trial.

Along with covering the crimes, investigation, arrest and trial of Gacy, Cahill also delves into Gacy's childhood and early years, including his relationship with his abusive father. The book is detailed, and Cahill writes with the kind of insight that only comes from having a complete understanding of his subject. It's also clear that Cahill researched Gacy thoroughly, and he notes in his introduction that he culled his information from a number of sources.

As can be expected, this book is scary stuff, with two chapters in particular being extremely disturbing and frightening to read. Cahill doesn't merely describe, he casts the reader in the role of witness to one of Gacy's murders, showing Gacy's core of pure evil. That said, this is also the type of book that is tough to put down, and also the type that stays with you long after having finished it.

I too could not disagree more with the reviewer who accused Cahill of plagiarising "Killer Clown." They are two very different books. And while "Killer Clown" is a good book, written largely from a legal/trial and punishment perspective, the better of the two by far is "Buried Dreams." The best overall book on Gacy.

I only read a little before I tossed. It turned out this is a book actually written by a person with this personality disorder. So it's hard for me to say if this isn't just grandstanding by the perpetrator which is so common amongst this disorder. Either way I was very turned off and walked away from it. I wished I hadn't paid money to support this

Buried Dreams vrs Killer Clown
By Kay D M
Reading these reviews that sound conflicting, I will try to sum up the difference between Killer Clown and Buried Dreams and it is simply this: Cahill is a writer, Sullivan is not. And although Sullivan had help, his book is still almost coldly factual, even as it flows well, but you will not get much out of it that can't be found on a hundred crime sites, besides his own frustration and dedication during the investigation. I'm not condemning this in any way, and if that is what you want as a reader, then Killer Clown will satisfy your cravings for facts and justice.

Cahill, on the other hand, has the same facts of course, but what he does with them is something you won't find anywhere else, something unique. He tells the tale almost from Gacy's point of view, piecing his sick-mindedness and subsequent murders together in a remarkably cohesive and insightful way. Right from the beginning. Some--probably most-- serial killers talk and 'fess up before their executions. Gacy did his confessing early, and then later went for the long shot that somehow he would place doubts in people's minds and save himself from death, by denying what he did. Definitely, he had no remorse. Except for a few slip-ups here and there, he gave no further information on his motivation or how his victims died. Using the facts he had, Cahill filled in these blanks, and answered the tough questions that Sullivan couldn't or wouldn't.

Buried Dreams is not just facts. It is not a text-book blanket profiling of collective criminal minds. It is not the investigation, trial and conviction from the detectives and lawyers points of views. It is as close as Cahill could get to showing us Gacy, personally, from the inside and I doubt it's far off the mark. It's consistent with Gacy's personality right up to his lethal injection. Yes, chilling. As it should be.

The Road to Gandolfo, by Robert Ludlum

In this wickedly funny novel, Robert Ludlum combines the explosive pacing of The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy with a bitingly witty send-up of everything from government bureaucrats and pandering military men to the mob, the law, and organized religion.

War hero and infamous ladies’ man, General MacKenzie Hawkins is a living legend. His life story had even been sold to Hollywood. But now he stands accused of defacing a historic monument in China’s Forbidden City. Under house arrest in Peking, with a case against him pending in Washington, it looks like the end of Mac’s illustrious career.

But he has a plan of his own—and it includes kidnapping the Pope. What’s the ransom? Just one American dollar—for every Catholic in the world. Add to the mix a slew of shady “investors,” Hawkins’s four persuasive, well-endowed ex-wives, and a young lawyer and fellow soldier who wants nothing more than to return to private life—and you’ve got one relentlessly irreverent page-turner.

Short rewiev of "The Road to Gandolfo. A Novel" by Robert Ludlum
By Tadeusz Bancewicz
For me this novel of Robert Ludlum is quite different than the other his books. It desribes imaginary situation which never happend in practcice.. Concerning story of this novel I do not understand why Hovard is so rich, already at the begining of the story? To solve it I read this book twice, without conclusion. Very sorry. I think that the present novel is rather an illusion. The real Pope Francisek the first come to Poland just today.
I am not very religious but I see the difference.

Of course Robet Ludlum with his talent made this novel interesting. It was good book for vacation!

Ludlum's best
By B. Sloane
If you love Ludlum's over-the-top novels (and I do), The Matarese Circle has to be up there with the best. Not all of Ludlum's books are a good match of plot and style -- the repeated "Oh my God!" declamations of one character after another can get silly when the goings-on aren't as riveting as they could be (the two Bourne sequels suffer from this problem, I think.) But Circle delivers on all fronts. Part One is a masterpiece all by itself -- the intricate cat-and-mouse game between Talienkov and Scofield plays out thrillingly. And these are two of Ludlum's most believably drawn characters; we feel empathy for both, and root for them to join forces from the get-go. Antonia Gravet, the inevitable gorgeous heroine/love interest who surfaces in Part Two, brings a well-crafted and believable backstory to the plot. One final bonus: some of Ludlum's zestiest minor characters appear in this book, adding to the fun in nearly every chapter.

The Medusa and the Snail: More Notes of a Biology Watcher, by Lewis Thomas

Lewis Thomas has been said to be a philosopher who uses the language of biology. His fascinating observations on the quirkiness of the world s infinite creations causes listeners to ponder the workings of the cosmos through the most microscopic of life forms.

The medusa, a tiny jellyfish that lives on the ventral surface of a sea slug found in the Bay of Naples, becomes a metaphor for eternal issues of life and death as Thomas further extends the exploration of man and his world which he began in The Lives of a Cell. Among the treasures in this magnificent book are essays on the human genius for making mistakes, on disease and natural death, on cloning, on warts, and on Montaigne, as well as an assessment of medical science and health care. In these essays and others, Thomas once again conveys his observations of the scientific world in his eloquent prose marked by wonder and wit."

All could be positive
By Dick Rikkengaa
You may read it, put it away and forget about it, but you may consider to read it again and again and again. If you try to live your life by the easy principles pointed out it this book, positive things WILL happen to you!!!

It's a basic pep-talk on a slightly higher level and very well written. This book can change your life completely (if you allow yourself the benefits of life) Nothing is "hocus spocus" here, neighter it will keep on forcing you to listen to the "biblical truths".

I say: If you have a little bit common sense and like to change your life for the better, this is THE book to own.

it's a shame that more holden caulfield refugees do not happen to seek shelter in this book that often, because it is wonderful.dewey daniels is a wunderkind. cocky, handsome, the epitome of angst and with enough brains to spare, he takes it upon himself to drop out of school (which let's face it, if you really know the basics, is a waste of time) and begins working at a hospital where he meets hippie, vegetarian, lovely, ice queen yvette whom is also a dropout.and boy chases girl hijinks ensue.this book is rather dated but in a lovely way, and is really witty for a teenage marketed book.cheers.

Absolutley brilliant
By Amazon Customer
This book was simply a work of genius. The characters of Dewey and Yvette were completely plausible in the era in which the book was written, and the story is excellant. Although it has to be read slowly and with a dictionary (at times), it is utterly worth it. Great for first-time readers of Paul Zindel.

This isn't a bad book, it's a good insight into a certain kind of teenage boy's mind and heart, and shows some of the problems with entering into a physical relationship lightly.

No One Writes Like Bradbury
By Philip P. Giunta
As usual, Ray Bradbury writes in splendid imagery, his prose poetic. No one else wrote, or will ever write, like Bradbury.

Yet, I fear most of today's editors would likely slash and gut much of his beautiful detail, carving the very heart from his work. Such are the changes in readers' tastes, which I partly blame on the dumbing down of society.

The Machineries of Joy was, not surprisingly, a joy to read. Of the 21 brilliant stories included, my favorites were:

"Tyrannosaurus Rex" — A stop-motion animator, tasked with creating a miniature T-Rex, just cannot seem to satisfy a film producer—until he completely recreates the beast's face to resemble someone very familiar.

"The Vacation"— Traveling atop a small four-wheeled workman's railcar, a family of three takes a serene cross-country excursion, able to avoid the rest of humanity—because they are the last people on Earth.

"Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms in your Cellar!"— Inspired by an ad in Popular Mechanics, a boy sends away for a kit to grow mushrooms in his parents' cellar, something that seems to be catching on across the country. However, it isn't long before alarming behavior begins to manifest in those who eat the mushrooms.

"Almost The End Of The World" — Two miners return home to regale the locals with yet more tall tales of adventure only to find their town completely changed. Everything is freshly painted from homes to shops to flower pots—and the locals suddenly prohibit the miners from uttering a word.

"And The Sailor, Home From The Sea" — A dying sea captain and widower, now living on a wheat farm far from the ocean, asks his caretaker to bury him at sea where he lost his wife so many years ago. When the time comes, the caretaker follows through—without ever leaving the farm.

"A Miracle of Rare Device" — Two schemers always looking for a fast buck discover a mirage in the New Mexico desert that appears to be New York City! They begin selling tickets to passersby, only to learn that each person sees something completely different—and life altering—in the trick of light and heat.

"And So Died Riabouchinska" — A detective investigating a murder questions a ventriloquist, but only learns the truth through the man's exquisite Russian female puppet.

"Death and the Maiden" — Old Mam, or so the townsfolk call her, locked herself in her house decades ago, fearing the day when Death would come for her. She receives no visitors save for a grocery clerk who merely delivers food to her porch once every few weeks. When Death finally arrives, he tempts Old Mam with an unexpected offer.

"To The Chicago Abyss" — A homeless man who remembers what life on Earth was like before Annihilation Day is saved from a beating on the street by the member of a secret movement that wishes to return to the days of old. The homeless man's reputation has fallen under the scrutiny of the authorities so the movement's followers send the homeless man to a place of safety, but not before he imparts his knowledge to them.

"The Anthem Sprinters" — In Dublin, a group of Irishman place bets on who can run out of the cinema the fastest after a movie, in order to avoid listening to Ireland's national anthem, which is played after the end of every film. When an American tourist is convinced to ante up and join the fun, he finds that even this callous group has a heart of gold.

Stories that are a joy to read
By Dave Deubler
Ray Bradbury is one of the finest short story writers of his era, and this book is a marvelous showcase of the depth and breadth of his work. Bradbury is often pigeon-holed as a science fiction writer, because of the enormous popular success of his futuristic novel Fahrenheit 451 and the excellent short story collection The Martian Chronicles, but much of his work transcends science fiction and fantasy altogether. In this collection (as with several others), Bradbury shows us his more human side, with offerings that range from the fantastic to the everyday, but always with the emphasis on people, and how they react to the sometimes difficult situations they find themselves in. There are a couple good science fiction yarns, including "The One Who Waits" with its menacing feel, and the casually apocalyptic "Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms in Your Cellar!" but even these feature protagonists who are nothing like the standard types. Unlike the driven loners who populate many works of science fiction, Bradbury's characters are members of families, visit with friends, and even play active parts in their communities. Bradbury chooses to make his characters human not with cruelty and vulgarity, but with compassion and simplicity, as in "The Beggar on O'Connell Bridge." Bradbury narrates in a muted tone, making the reader listen closely to hear him; his stories are quieter than perhaps any modern writer's. Into this reverent hush, he places small nuggets of story, sometimes with very little action, or with the action delineated, but not actually taking place within the story, such as the quiet evening before the battle in "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh." Some of the stories are almost like prose poems, extolling the wonders of nature, as in "A Miracle of Rare Device" or offering subtle social commentary, as in "Almost the End of the World." As such, Bradbury is not for everyone; action-lovers may find his work boring or even frustrating, and fans of science fiction and fantasy will discover that much of his work is both reality-based and non-scientific. Instead, he searches out some obscure corner of personal morality, and asks us to accept it for what it is. Bradbury believes in the essential goodness of human beings, despite their occasional lapses, and makes us feel good to be part of the human race. He is willing to forgive humanity its foibles, and hopes with us for a better tomorrow. For today, that seems cause enough for joy.

A Master at the Height of his Powers
By Avid Reader
This is vintage Bradbury - no punk, obscenity, fantasy, horror or sex. Just beautiful, succinct, wonderfully constructed short stories that give new meaning to the term "American Genius".
The stories range in subject matter from religion to space to family to war but through it all Bradbury explores the meaning of being human in all its wondrous degrees. There is more poetry in this prose than in most English books of poetry. Every single story - I mean every one! - is excellent, thought provoking and haunting. What a writer!

The Ferguson Rifle: A Novel, by Louis L'Amour

It began with gold that had once belonged to Montezuma. Stolen and cached in a church in Mexico, it was recovered by two army officers who fled north for the French settlements. Along the way one stabbed the other to death. The remaining officer was eventually killed by Plains Indians, but he buried the treasure just before he died.

Now Ronan Chantry, a handful of trappers, and an Irish girl whose father was killed after telling her a few vague landmarks are searching for the lost treasure. But they are not alone. The girl’s uncle, Rafen Falvey, wants it, too. Like Chantry, he is well educated, bold, and determined. Under different circumstances the two men might have been friends. But in all likelihood it wouldn’t have made any difference. When it comes to gold, even friendship doesn’t keep men from killing each other.

An excellent production for newcomers and devotees alike
By J. Binkerd
I actually read The Ferguson Rifle for the first time years ago* and loved it, but I recently won the audiobook from Goodreads via their FirstReads program. This lined up nicely with a road trip my wife and I had to take, and so the adventure began anew....

I don't usually do audiobooks, as I have little time for them. I don't have copious amounts of driving built into my day (if this ever changes, I likely will start consuming larger quantities), I can't listen at work, and frankly given the choice I would rather actually read the book myself. All that said, this was an excellent production. The reader, Brian D'Arcy James, has a marvelous command of accents, be they British, Scottish or Irish, and this book allowed him to showcase them to great effect. My wife and I both loved it, so I am reasonably sure this book will please both Louis L'Amour fanatics and newcomers.

It is no real secret that given how many novels L'Amour wrote that were set in the old west, sometimes they tend to run together in your memory. This, however, is one of those especially excellent entries in his bibliography that stand out in your memory both from sheer uniqueness and from persistent quality. Unlike most of Louis L'Amour's bibliography, this book is not a "western" in the classical sense. It is set on America's frontier around the year 1800, meaning the northerly Great Plains-the Dakotas, Montana, that area. In another sense, however, this is very much a western. That was "the west" at the time being described, just as what we now think of as the "east coast" was at one point the western frontier of exploration. It is into this territory, newly bought from France through the Louisiana Purchase, that Ronan Chantry rides. His old life is dead, all he loves burned up in a tragic fire. Now all he has is his experience on the frontier as a boy, his education in Europe as a man, his horse, and the extraordinary rifle he was given as a boy. He rides with a company of trappers into a new land, nearly unexplored, in search of a new start. When he discovers the trail of a woman and boy alone, being ruthlessly hunted by unsavory men, Ronan feels called to help. But when there is a fabled fortune of gold in the offering, men are not likely to give up its pursuit easily....

I'm a known Louis L'Amour devotee, so I absolutely loved this. No one crafts an adventure like Louis L'Amour, and few writers I've found have his appreciation for the scope of human history and the persistent force of western movement, while still retaining an appreciation for the contributions of the individual to history's march. This is one of those books that, while reading, makes you yearn to look out across the unspoiled territory this country once was, to stand where his characters stand and see what they see. There's a beauty to it, and you can hear in L'Amour's writing a lilting note of mourning for what we have lost. He does not blame the pioneers and the farmers for what has happened, he understands history too well for that, and appreciates the inevitability of the march of "progress." That doesn't mean he (or his characters) have to like it. Ditto for the Indians, and you see that here as well. There are several sequences where the Indian is discussed, his character, his future, and his habits. Again, L'Amour understands why things happened as they did, but it still saddens him. Longtime Louis L'Amour readers will know what to expect in terms of characters and character development-there's not usually a whole lot of moral ambiguity to a L'Amour adventure, there are good guys and bad guys, and they know their roles. Is that a problem? Not so far as I'm concerned. We need stories like that just as much as we need the other kind, maybe more. And this day and age, that type of story is harder to find.

CONTENT: Mild language, some violence, little to no sexual content.

*I've read most of Louis L'Amour's books, but I can't always remember which ones. This is fine-I'm totally up for reading a lot of them again. Probably going to go questing to read the entire bibliography at some point.

Another Louis Lamour western
By Fields
Enjoyable story and worth listening to. If you have a lot of his books why not pick this one up? The best two of his books IMHO are Flint and Reilly's Luck. But we own all of his books and most of his audio versions. Great author....

The Prince of Tides: A Novel, by Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy has created a huge, brash thunderstorm of a novel, stinging with honesty and resounding with drama. Spanning forty years, this is the story of turbulent Tom Wingo, his gifted and troubled twin sister, Savannah, and their struggle to triumph over the dark and tragic legacy of the extraordinary family into which they were born.

Filled with the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina Low Country as well as the dusty glitter of New York City, The Prince of Tides is Pat Conroy at his very best.

From Publishers Weekly
For sheer storytelling finesse, Conroy will have few rivals this season. His fourth novel is a seductive narrative, told with bravado flourishes, portentous foreshadowing, sardonic humor and eloquent turns of phrase. Like The Great Santini, it is the story of a destructive family relationship wherein a violent father abuses his wife and children. Henry Wingo is a shrimper who fishes the seas off the South Carolina coast and regularly squanders what little money he amasses in farcical business schemes; his beautiful wife, Lila, is both his victim and a manipulative and guilt-inflicting mother. The story is narrated by one of the children, Tom Wingo, a former high school teacher and coach, now out of work after a nervous breakdown. Tom alternately recalls his growing-up years on isolated Melrose Island, then switches to the present in Manhattan, where his twin sister and renowned poet, Savannah, is recovering from a suicide attempt. One secret at the heart of this tale is the fate of their older brother Luke; we know he is dead, but the circumstances are slowly revealed. Also kept veiled is "what happened on the island that day"a grisly scene of horror, rape and carnage that eventually explains much of the sorrow, pain and emotional alienation endured by the Wingo siblings. Conroy deftly manages a large cast of characters and a convoluted plot, although he dangerously undermines credibility through a device by which Tom tells the Wingo family saga to Savannah's psychiatrist. Some readers may find here a pale replica of Robert Penn Warren's powerful evocation of the Southern myth; others may see resemblances to John Irving's baroque imaginings. Most, however, will be swept along by Conroy's felicitous, often poetic prose, his ironic comments on the nature of man and society, his passion for the marshland country of the South and his skill with narrative. 250,000 first printing; $250,000 ad/promo; movie rights to United Artists; BOMC main selection; author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA In order to aid a psychiatrist who is treating his psychotic sister, Tom Wingo arrives in Manhattan and describes figures from his youth, among them an abusive father, a mother obsessed with being accepted by Colleton's tawdry elite, eccentric grandparents, stolid brother Luke, and sensitive, poet-sister Savannah. Despite the book's length, scenes such as Grandmother Tolitha's visit to Ogletree's funeral home to try out coffins, Grandfather's yearly re-enactment of the stations of the Cross, Mrs. Wingo's passive-aggressive retaliation by serving her husband dog food, Luke's Rambo-like attempt to keep Colleton from becoming a nuclear plant site, and a bloody football game with the team's first black player deserve students' attention. While Conroy's skills at characterization and storytelling have made the book popular, his writing style may place it among modern classics. He adds enough detail so that readers can smell the salty low-country marsh, see the regal porpoise Snow against the dark ocean, and taste Mrs. Wingo's gourmet cooking and doctored dog food. The story is wholly Tom's; Conroy resists the temptation to include the vantage points of other characters. It is the reluctance of Tom to tell all, to recount rather than recreate his family's past, and to face up to the Wingos' mutual rejections that maintain the tension just below the story's surface. It is Tom's coming clean about his past that lays bare the truth and elevates Prince of Tides above a scintillating best seller. Alice Conlon, Univ . of Houston

From Library Journal
Savannah Wingo, a successful feminist poet who has suffered from hallucinations and suicidal tendencies since childhood, has never been able to reconcile her life in New York with her early South Carolina tidewater heritage. Her suicide attempt brings her twin brother, Tom, to New York, where he spends the next few months, at the request of Savannah's psychiatrist, helping to reconstruct and analyze her early life. In beautifully contrasting memories which play childhood fears against the joys and wonders of being alive, Tom creates and communicates the all-consuming sense of family which is Savannah's major strength as a poet and her tragic flaw as a human being. Conroy has achieved a penetrating vision of the Southern psyche in this enormous novel of power and emotion. BOMC main selection.Thomas L. Kilpatrick, Southern Illinois Univ. Lib., Carbondale

Exceeded My Expectations
By chibilee02
When I started Pat Conroy’s Prince of Tides I expected to get a good read based on the accolades Conroy’s books have gotten. What I didn’t expect was how much I loved the book. It really took me by surprise how much I got into the story and enjoyed reading the tumultuous, horrible, quirky and loving lives of the Wingo family.

Much of the credit goes to Conroy’s wonderful writing and narration. It’s was interesting how the writing was very poetic and lyrical but still had this casualness which made it easy to read and enjoy. Despite the expansive vocabulary (I’ve never had to look up so many words before), it didn’t bogged down the narrative making it difficult for you to want to continue reading. Conroy managed to eloquently convey the complicated relationships and feelings of the family at the heart of this story without having to make you work for it.

It also helps that the narration was full of self-deprecating and sarcastic humor from the book’s narrator, Tom Wingo. Imagine my surprise when a couple of paragraphs into my reading when Tom busts out some one liners and having some cheeky conversations with his 3 young daughters who all seem to share the same brand of humor as their dad. While Tom’s humor certainly helped make reading the story fun, it also served to reflect how his childhood has affected him. Through his voice, you come to see that he uses his humor to hide, express and deflect his issues stemming from his childhood. It makes Tom a character that is likeable and sympathetic but never one that you pity in spite of discovering the kind of the life he had growing up in Colleton.

Conroy created an interesting family that is at the heart of the story. Through Tom’s eyes you discover a family that’s full of contradictories and pain but has a great capacity for love. Each member of the Wingo family from the parents Henry and Lila to their children, Luke, Savannah and Tom, have their own distinct personalities that oftentimes cause clashes amongst themselves but enables them to understand each other in a way that no one else in their small town can. Their household is a battlefield in of itself and also their haven. As you read through the story, you find yourself often appalled at the behavior of the adults but then something will happen which you begrudgingly feel for them and get a small understanding of what drives them which you end up being like one of their children. You gain a certain love/hate relationship with both Henry and Lila which I suppose is par for the course with many families. Through the Wingo family’s trials and conflicts, Conroy encompassed the best and worst of living in a small Southern town with all the quirks that goes with it.

It was a pleasant surprise to have found a book that went beyond my expectations. Conroy wrote a story full of charismatic characters with a complex family dynamic that was filled with both heartache and love. His intelligent, eloquent and witty writing really made reading the book a joy and thoroughly kept me enthralled in Tom’s narrative. This is the sort of book that gradually pulls you in and quietly goes about its job of engaging you. This was an epic family story that didn’t have the feel of one which reflected the contradictory and complex nature of the story itself.

This is my FAVORITE novel. It is a challenging read
By MarezCharZ
There is graphic violence and sexual content. However, none of it is gratuitous. It is well-used in telling the story. This is my FAVORITE novel. It is a challenging read, in that it is extremely evocative of deep emotion. Pat Conroy's writing is so lovely. I visited the southern part of NC Coast and northern part of SC coast almost every summer as a child. He makes you taste the salty air, feel the thickness of the humidity and cry for all the wronged people. He takes you back and forth through time in South Carolina, WWII and other places. This book made me confront some of my own repressed past. This is a harsh and extremely beautiful book. It will put you through the wringer and you will love every minute of the exquisite torture.

A Tough Read
By O
I really struggled with this book. I absolutely love Pat Conroy's books and had not read Prince of Tides. My friend said it was her favorite of his. I found the story tedious and depressing. There weren't any characters in the book that I could relate to so it took me forever to finish it. It just didn't resonate with me. I'm so glad that I didn't read this one first or I may have never read his other books. My all time favorite of his is South of Broad. I've read it twice and listened to it twice. He was an amazing author and his grasp of the English language was unlike any other. He will be missed...
