Before the huge crowd that packed the cathedral square, La Esmeralda stood between two executioners. Suddenly Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre Dame, rushed at the executioners and felled them with his enormous fists. He snatched the gypsy girl in one arm and ran with her into the church. A moment later he appeared at the top of the bell tower. Holding the girl above his head, he showed her triumphantly to all of Paris while his thunderous voice roared savagely to the sky: “Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Sanctuary!”
Set amid the riot, intrigue, and pageantry of medieval Paris, Victor Hugo’s masterful tale of heroism and adventure has been a perennial favorite since its first publication in 1831 and remains one of the most thrilling stories of all time.

Gr 5-12-Amidst the foreboding structure of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris during medieval times, Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell ringer, watches the city and it's people in awe, yet knowing that he can never belong among them because of his deformed shape. Through an odd turn of events, he finds himself cast in a struggle to save the beautiful gypsy dancer Esmaralda from being unjustly executed. The St. Charles Players in a multicast dramatization uniquely tell this tragic tale of romance and intrigue. Music and background sounds are intertwined with truly dramatic character portrayals to result in a superb "radio theatre" style rendition of this classic tale. Magnificent emphasis to detail makes this a must have for middle or high school libraries. Students will be enthralled by the excellent telling of this tale.-Tammy E. Snipes, Great Falls High School,

Hugo's standard is being reprinted to tie in with the Disney animated feature. Though the average kid is not likely to wade through this epic, Hyperion's illustrated edition is actually quite nice if you're looking for a quality hardcover at a good price.

From Kirkus Reviews
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (40 pp.; $15.95; Sept. 1997; 0-531- 30055-2): A storybook retelling of Hugo's classic of the lonely bellringer and his hopeless love for the beautiful gypsy girl, Esmerelda, whom he rescues from hanging and the evil archdeacon Dom Frollo and reunites with her mother. While remaining relatively faithful to the original, this version from Wynne- Jones (The Maestro, 1996, etc.) is always competent, but never compelling. Slavin creates lovely illustrations, but his pale washes leave even the most festive scenes sedate. The volume lacks power or emotion; adults seeking an alternative--any alternative--to the Disney film may find that this one hardly competes for the hearts and minds of the target audience. I Got a Hunch You'll Love It
By Steven Kerry
I loved this classic. It took a few pages to grab me in the very beginning but once it did I was hooked. If you are as dismayed by the dismaying state of the "real world" this book can be your escape into an entirely different world. That is it's appeal and why it is a much deserved classic. This is story-telling at its finest. it is sometimes easy to be intimidated by "classics", but don't hesitate to dive into this tale as it is not a difficult book. You won't regret it. This is the same writer who wrote Les Miserables, which I also intend to read one day as soon as I can recover from the epic, but rather ham-fisted movie version of a few years ago.

A gift for my dad
By val lacy
I bought this book for my dad who absolutely loved it. It was in great shape for how old it was. A little sun faded on the spine but no torn pages, no tears, no broken spine.
The seller even wrapped the book in bubble wrap to ensure it made its travel to me safely.
It was in excellent collectors condition and I was extremely happy with this purchase.
Thank you so very much. My dad like bed his gift and I loved that the seller took the time to wrap it and send it off safely.

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
By Barry M. Lamont
An excellent, very readable translation of the UNCUT original, revealing it to be a lot more panoramic than I expected, a much broader look at the city of Paris, its physical presence, and all the people who inhabited it in Victor Hugo's time, and not focused so exclusively on the one familiar title character - a title which was not Hugo's own, but was applied to the first English translation by the publisher; Hugo titled his work "Notre-Dame de Paris". The introduction is lucid and passionate, and for scholars, there are extensive explanations of Hugo's topical references at the end of the book.
