From Library Journal
Written in 1977, Dexter's third detective novel has Eton-educated, beer-drinking Inspector Morse investigating the murder of Nicholas Quinn, a deaf, newly hired staff member of the Foreign Examinations Syndicate. The Syndicate, which conducts "O" and "A" level examinations for overseas students, is being compromised. It seems someone in the small group of examiners is selling the test questions to the highest bidder. Now, each of the remaining members are suspects. The chief inspector must solve the puzzle of conflicting and corroborating alibis, timetables, and misdirections in order to pin down the killer. British actor Terrence Hardiman's narration is on the mark. This clever whodunit and its deceptive plot entertain and engage the reader. Another intriguing Inspector Morse mystery!
By A Customer
Another one of Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse mysteries. The main character, Inspector Morse, and his sidekick, Sergeant Lewis, tackle another murder mystery. This time of a deaf man, recently hired to work for the Foreign Examinations Board in Oxford. Everyone seems to be a suspect, but as usual Lewis' non-challant remarks and Morse's sharp mind, solve the mystery - a complex who-dunnit. I believe that this book is one of the earlier Inspector Morse mysteries, since some characteristics of Morse are not in-line with that is known so far. For example, Morse is a well educated man, with interest in classical music, Latin, history and The Times crossword puzzles. However, in one scene, Morse does not know what Darjeeling is. There are also other discrepancies: Morse drives a Lancia in this book, which I find very inappropriate, him being a snobby Enlighman. Morse's usual vintage maroon Jaguar is more in-line. Other than those little discrepancies, the book was yet another good exercise for the mind and an enjoyable read. The Oxford setting still always takes me back to those college days, when I used to roam around Oxford myself.

A bit too clever and, thus, contrived
By Macburger52
This is one of my least favorite Morse mysteries (my least favorite is "The Wench is Dead"). The main problem I have with this story is not in the telling of it or the characters, but the overly complicated and far-too clever plot. It's as if Dexter got too clever for his own good in this one...especially when he has to spend the last 15 pages explaining what happened amidst all the convoluted details. Still worth reading, however, for anyone who likes Morse.

One of the best in the series
By Michael K. Smith
This is the third novel in the immensely popular series featuring DCI Morse -- I almost said "featuring John Thaw," so heavily is the character identified with that actor's portrayal of him -- and it nicely maintains the pace of the first two. Morse is smug, arrogant, self-satisfied, and elitist, but he also has the sort of brain meant for putting subtle clues together and coming up with the right answer. Although it sometimes takes him a couple of attempts to get there.

Nicholas Quinn is a young academic who has recently been hired as one of the four examiners in the employ of Oxford's Foreign Examinations Board. The Board is a semi-private syndicate that administers and grades tests in English language and history to students overseas, a demonstrated competence in English being mandatory in today's international business world. This is especially true in the Arab Gulf states, where there are piles of money to be made by those who get the contracts. But the Board is also dependent on its reputation for integrity in its testing and for security in protecting those tests from subversion, and when Quinn is found murdered by cyanide, it doesn't take Morse long to wonder if perhaps Quinn learned something he wasn't supposed to know. Because the dead man was also almost totally deaf and was a very talented lip-reader. You can see where this is going, can't you? And it doesn't help the police that almost everyone who knew Quinn is arguably a suspect. But while Morse likes to play his little games, even if it really annoys the hell out of the more stolid Sgt. Lewis, he does finally get there, and the journey to the solution is a highly enjoyable one, with ready wit, well-drawn characters, and a plot intricate enough to hold your attention.

Pardon Me, You're Stepping on My Eyeball!
By V. Charbonneau
"Pardon Me, You're Stepping on My Eyeball!" was the third book I read by Paul Zindel. The story revolves around fifteen year-old Louis "Marsh" Mellow and Edna Shinglebox. Both have weird parents and have trouble fitting in at school. Marsh's mother, whom he nicknames Schizo Suzy, is a drunk who stays at home in her polka-dot nightgown drinking diet beer and eating cashew nuts while watching T.V. Edna's mother is a hysterical woman who shadowed her daughter for years and is upset that Edna has not dated yet and has no friends. Marsh and Edna meet in group-therapy, set up by the the school's pushy, three-hundred pound psychologist, Mr. Meizner. There Marsh asks Edna to help rescue his father, Paranoid Pete, from a nuthouse. While "My Darling, My Hamburger" and "The Girl Who Wanted a Boy" left me feeling depressed at the end, this book has a healthy dose of humour to lighten the mood. The story is basically about reaching out, overcoming fear and loneliness and finding someone to love, share and trust.

One of my all-time favorite books
By A Customer
I admit that I am getting a little old for young adult novels. I found this book at a rummage sale, because the title caught my eye... I started to read and and couldn't put it down. Zindel's words flow beautifully, and are spiced with all sorts of quirks. the ending was perfect, wrapping up everything but still believable and not cheesey. I highly recommend this book, and I don't say that often

Kilkenny wasn’t looking for trouble when he entered the Clifton House stage station, but trouble found him when a reckless youngster named Tetlow challenged him, drew his gun, and paid for it with his life.

Looking to escape a reputation that he never wanted, Kilkenny settles in the lonely mountain country of Utah, planning to ranch a high, lush valley. But the past is on his trail. Jared Tetlow is a powerful rancher determined to run his vast herd on the limited grasslands there—whether he has to buy out the local ranchers, run them out, or kill them. He’ll cut down anyone who stands in his way, especially a man he already despises: the gunman named Kilkenny—the man who killed his son.

Kilkenny--top notch afternoon's read
By James Drury
Howdy folks--James Drury here. You might remember me from TV's the Virginian. I've done some other reviews on some of Louis L'Amour's stuff, and I don't know if these ever get used, but I wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've been reading Kirby Jonas's Westerns on audio tape lately and have enjoyed them so thoroughly because, frankly, they reminded me of Louis L'Amour's style. Kirby admits he grew up on Louis L'Amour, so I guess that explains it. And by the way, if you run out of Louis L'Amours and want to give someone else a shot, try one of Kirby's. You won't regret it. But back to Kilkenny, it is a fast-paced surefire way to get your afternoon, evening, or even your morning in gear, and a thoroughly entertaining way to spend an afternoon on a deer stand!

Reminded me of early Heinlein and old Bester, Better written than EE Doc Smith, yet still having the wonder. It's irritating to find out that the writer has decided to pursue a career in law instead of finishing his story. This was a great start.

By Mark McLauchlan
A Mind-Blowingly good read. A writer this good comes along very rarely. This guy is easily the equal of Terry Pratchett. He makes you feel like your experiencing the story close-up. It is a great blow to science fiction that has apparrently written "only" the two books.
PS: His books are impossible to find copies of here in Australia, I had to get my copy of Threshold over the net from the US. (Total cost A$17.40)including postal charges
Still haven't got a copy of Emergence, Have to read mum's copy.

Prisoner's Base finds Nero Wolfe's legman Archie guilt-ridden and seeking the detective's help. Three women have been murdered, one a towel company heiress. Is her fortune-hunting husband involved, or were greedy business associates behind her death? As usual Wolfe's sleuthing talents puzzle out the truth. Michael Pritchard's clear, strong, and pleasant reading supports the tale and helps keep the atmosphere charged. Entertaining and suspenseful; recommended. Denise A. Garofalo, Mid-Hudson Lib. Prisoner's Base
By Ricky N.
I was glad that Bantam re-released this book after many years of my not being able to obtain it. Priscilla Eads, the heiress to millions of dollars, asks Nero Wolfe if she can stay in his house for a week. Shortly after Wolfe turns her down, Priscilla and her maid are found strangled to death. Archie asks Wolfe to investigate the murders. The plot is strong, although dark, and the characters are strong and believable, but the main enjoyment I get out of reading any of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe novels is another trip into the old brownstone house in New York on West Thirty-fifth Street with Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfe, Fritz, fine dining, and orchids. It's always a pleasure to read a Nero Wolfe mystery.

Excellent novel, it does not disappoint
By G. McC
This is a great Nero Wolfe story. It opens with Archie and Wolfe in a heated row. The two detectives have been known to push each others buttons but when Archie tears up his paycheck the resulting friction can be felt for the rest of the novel. Archie at one points runs out of the office and brownstone yelling that he doesn't care if he gets fired and goes to search for a killer himself. Along the way, Archie runs into a variety of strange characters including Sarah Jaffee, a young widow who still has a place set at the table for her dead husband. But the best part of all is this: as the pressure heats up to a boiling point, Wolfe finds himself with an unexpected client, Archie Goodwin.
William DeAndrea's terse introduction to the novel covers a lot in a few words. As he makes clear, this is an excellent novel for the new reader of the Nero Wolfe series. As a part of "The Rex Stout Library," a reprint of rare or "never before seen" memorabilia from Stout's archives is included at the back of the volume. I was disappointed with the item for this volume, the first typewritten page of Stout's manuscript. It does not exactly make a big splash, especially when the only difference between manuscript and final book form was the title. But that is my only criticism.
I recommend this book to all, avid mystery reader or not. I say not to fear for those fans of the television series that may be wary to tackle the volumes since Tim Hutton followed each novel very closely. The television show was excellent but there is even more detail in the book. For example, you get to learn exactly why Mrs. Jaffee should be able to recognize Eric Hagh along with how far an old man went when planning to strangle a young girl.

Another great visit with Nero Wolfe
By L. Toll
Nero Wolfe fans will not be disappointed in this book. Archie Goodwin delivers his usual smart-alecky narration, Wolfe himself is as gruff and brilliant as usual, and the rest of the cast of favorites make their appearances as well (Fritz is particularly amusing this time around).

Wolfe is approached by a young woman who wishes to simply live in his house for a week. While she is out of sight in an upstairs bedroom, a man, also offering to pay Wolfe for his services, comes to the door looking for her. The girl refuses Wolfe's terms, leaves, and winds up dead before morning.

After a few more corpses turn up, Archie begins to feel responsible, and takes off on his own to assist the police investigation. In a surprise twist, Wolfe agrees to represent a new client's interests in the matter, and the plot thickens.

If you're looking for a highbrow mystery, don't stop here, but if you're looking for a quick whodunit, you'll enjoy this book. At 150 or so pages, it's a nice afternoon's distraction that will keep you entertained, but don't expect Rendell or James here. Stout wrote them fast and furious, and they need to be read the same way. All in all, a very enjoyable episode in the Nero Wolfe collection.

Somewhat frustrating...
By Michael Valdivielso
You were born on a spaceship traveling between two galaxies. You now can select which planet, and therefore which galaxy, you will now be a citizen of. Which planet will you go to? What adventures will you have in getting there? Will you find either of them?

No likely. Space is full of black holes, wars and hostile races. Will you give up your search and join the Universe Governing Body to try to bring peace to the galaxies? Or will you pick a side to fight on, joining in the wars? Will you travel in time, explore new worlds or go to school?

Most of the 44 possible endings seem to be your death or some vague ending without any real meaning. I'm surprised that, as a kid, I kept trying to find the endings I wanted.

In space no one can hear you sigh..
By P. Macpherson
Space and Beyond (CYOA #4) by R.A. Montgomery. This is the first (and so far only) Choose Your Own Adventure book I didn't finish. It reads like dull gibberish from an aging hippie. I stopped reading after coming across my fifth ending of nonsense. The initial plot is that you have just turned 18 (in apparently 3 days and 2 hours) and must now choose your home planet for citizenship. You were born in space and can choose either your father's planet, with its troubled past and dying sun, or your mother's mysterious planet, also with a troubled past but a bright future. On my reading I had the chance to go back to the space academy for lessons, to command a starship, to become a research scientist, and to fight in a shadow vs light war. It sounds terribly exciting. But nothing really happens. And you have a friend follow you around who does so little the writer has to keep reminding you he's there. Now I'm just going to quote the endings I reached so you can fully appreciate the level of writing.

After being taught during a private lesson about the 'infinity of knowledge to explore within ourselves' I was given the choice to either travel to the era of dinosaurs or to some unknown point in the past. I chose the latter and on the next page got: "A chance to go to the unknown is probably really risky, but there is that desire in most people to take risks. You race back in time toward the edge of eternity, the beginning of the entire universe. You achieve an elastic weightlessness, and a sense of complete peace and calm. There is no sound, no light. But no darkness either. You race back to the very beginning, to the pulsating, exciting start. You return to the big bang that started the whole thing. You are and you have been a part of everything, always. The beginning is the end. THE END" Wasn't that fun!?

My next path lead me to investigating the cause of war by time traveling to a Mars in the past. Sounds exciting, right? After traveling back this is literally all there is: "When you arrive on Mars, you are invisible and can travel through space, through solid matter, and even into the thoughts of people. What is the cause of revolt on Mars? Who knows. Greed? Famine? Envy? Jealousy? Maybe just an instinctive need to battle, a basic drive to test and fight for the sheer sense of fighting. It's too complex. Everyone has a different answer. They all point to the other guy. All you know is that creatures get killed, cities get destroyed. What a way to live. That's why there is a new way- if only it will work. You are part of the new way, a way of sharing. THE END" What!? This 'way of sharing' hadn't been mentioned even once the entire story.

And if you join the side of the shadows, who are fighting against beings of light, you are given the choice to either be a ground soldier or a pilot. Both sound pretty exciting. And after choosing the latter this is all I got: "The rocket ship forces sound the most interesting, and besides, you are trained as a space pilot. Ground forces would be difficult for you. You are promoted to a command rank and put in charge of a large spacecraft with laser rocket weapons. From then on you are in space searching out and destroying alien ships. But you think to yourself, is this any kind of life, forever destroying things? Maybe you will quit. THE END" Why bother giving the reader lots of choices just to keep wrapping them up in one page philosophies. I'm not reading this for half-baked philosophies, I want adventure!

In the same shadows vs light war after choosing to retreat in battle as a soldier the next page reads: "Retreat is not always a bad thing. After all, you should go with what feels right. To fight now would only create further destruction. Enough damage has been done. Level off, give way. Let the other side realize what has been happening, too. As you retreat, the enemy seems to let up in amazement. The smoke clears, the noise stops. They retreat also. There is no more fighting. THE END" ...

And if I didn't retreat right away this was my other choice and ending: "There is a chance to get away. During a quiet moment, your group escapes to some remote hills far away from the battle area. Then something happens. The energy source for the lasers, the spacecrafts, the communications systems, mysteriously vanishes. There is no more energy except your own human energy. Weapons are useless. Radios and transporters are just pieces of metal and plastic. They are not working either. To survive now, you will have to hunt for food and support each other. THE END" I have no idea what happened. And I don't care. This is when I stopped reading. By the way, this page is accompanied by a picture of a caveman fighting a sabertooth tiger with a spear. It's a fine picture but seems like it's from another book. There are 44 (lousy) endings in 117 page book (including full page pictures).

The ONLY positives to this book are that there are a lot of choices, though they end up leading to gibberish, and the art by Paul Granger is pretty good. Unfortunately the art choices are kinda dull and/or small and few take advantage of the artist's skill for detailed drawings.

They came by river and by wagon train, braving the endless distances of the Great Plains and the icy passes of the Sierra Nevada. They were men like Linus Rawlings, a restless survivor of Indian country who’d headed east to see the ocean but left his heart—and his home—in the West. They were women like Lilith Prescott, a smart, spirited beauty who fled her family and fell for a gambling man in the midst of a frontier gold boom. These pioneering men and women sowed the seeds of a nation with their courage—and with their blood. Here is the story of how their paths would meet amid the epic struggle against fierce enemies and nature’s cruelty, to win for all time the rich and untamed West.

Enjoyable
By yajaru
I know Louis L'amour is the premier name in westerns but this is a genre i usually don't read, although i am an avid reader. being familiar with this title from the movie i decided to give it a try. it was easy to read and kept my interest. it had a sweeping view of several generations of one family as they are drawn westward. it is lacking in character development, but has enough that you are familiar with and understand each character. there are lots of minor characters that are drawn into the plot as the family moves west. lots of action and some adventures as the sweep of history develops. not a page turner, but an enjoyable few hours reading.

There's no such thing as a bad Nero Wolfe book
By Robert Byrd
The Father Hunt does not rate at the top of Rex Stout's plots, but certainly near the top for characterization. Wolfe and Archie have never been better. While some would think this is a companion piece to The Mother Hunt, it should be read only after reading Death of a Doxy, as there is a minor tie-in to that book. A young woman has never known her father, so hires Wolfe to discover his identity. What begins as a simple paternity case ends up being a hunt for a murderer. If you've never read a Nero Wolfe novel before, DON'T read this one--start with one of the earlier books. But if you are familiar with the residents of the brownstone on West 35th Street, a treat awaits.

Enjoyable but...
By Janice Schessler
Did not see copy of stouts response to editors request for clarification of the motive for the murder. I too found it to be weak as I understood it. I enjoyed the book anyway because of the characters as well as the descriptions of life in New York at that time.

Louis' best short story collection!
By al ellefson
Of course, eventually, all of L'amour's great old pulp fiction will see book form and, as a huge Louis fan, I'm glad of it. But if you want to read L'Amour's BEST short fiction, this collection, the first, supervised by the author himself back in '75, is your finest bet!
L'Amour was a better writer in his pulp days than he will ever be given credit for. In fact, as a late purveyor of the pulp western's twilight era, I prefer him to Elmore Leonard, H.A. DeRosso, et al. These men were just self-conscious crime writers (with some hipper-than-thou neo-naturalist brightness and talent) who condescended, for a time, to sell westerns. L'Amour, on the other hand, was a believer! -- and BOY, could he knock off a tale!
Also worth noting is the story "The Gift of Cochise," expanded by James Edward Grant into the screenplay for John Wayne's movie HONDO. (L'Amour is now believed to have actually novelized this photoplay-- See Weinberg's LOUIS L'AMOUR COMPANION.) I believe the original story is far better than HONDO-- book or movie! L'Amour's original is more logical and realistic, and the love story works better with the dead husband as a good guy toward whom Ches (later Hondo) Lane feels a driving responsiblity. This was one of L'Amour's greatest perfomances.
Also, check out the other 'slicks' Louis wrote for COLLIER'S and the SATURDAY EVENING POST-- pure, smart story-telling! (Especially the forgotten 1960 Sackett story "Booty For A Badman.") The ladies will love his excursions into "Ranch Romance" territory-- "One For The Pot" and the title story. There's not a single dud here and the collection would be perfect if it included "Bluff Creek Station" (later collected in THE STRONG SHALL LIVE), my personal choice as L'Amour's greatest short story.
So buy it when you can, especially if you have never read Louis L'Amour! This anthology is a perfect introduction to an American legend.

If you are looking for Tell Sackett?
By Rob Drummond
If you are looking for Tell Sackett there is only one short story. All of the stories are short and quickly read. They end quick too at times where the story is really about to begin. I found that a little frustrating. The stories have a moral message too for example there is an Irish drunkard that saves a town all alone from raiding Apaches. He was of so low regard that the town folks left him when fleeing the town. Kind of unbelieveable in my opinion.

But if you like L'Amour you will enjoy the book. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I was hoping for more stories on Tell Sackett.

It was no work for a woman. That's what they told Mary Breydon when she came to manage a rundown stagecoach station on the Cherokee Trail. But Mary had no choice. Her fine Virginia home burned to ashes in the Civil War and her husband was brutally shot down on the way to Colorado. She needed to make a new beginning for herself and her young daughter on the raw frontier. Isolated in an untamed land, their life at the station was achingly hard and they faced the constant danger of attacks by outlaws and marauding Indians. Yet, with the support of a spirited Irish woman, a fearless orphan boy, and, most of all, the mysterious gunman Temple Boone, Mary found the courage to shape her station into a vital stop on America's westward journey. Until the vicious murderer whose bloody rampages had stained her past suddenly stalked Mary Breydon to Cherokee Station.

The Cherokee Trail
By Lezlie Bock
I loved this book! In the Cherokee Trail we meet Mary and her daughter Peg on their way to start a new life after her husband was murdered. Mary is planning to run a stagecoach station miles away for home. Little does she know that her husband's murderer is in town and knows her wareabouts. Mary meets many obstacles and dangers, but with the help of a mysterious gunman and an Irish maiden, she overcomes her fears and proves that she is there to stay. She is not the least bit afraid to whip the bad out of a bad guy! This is a MUST READ book!

An exciting story which has it all in it
By A Customer
I really enjoyed reading this book. The book The Cherokee Trail was about a women named Mary Breydon who travels west to Colorado to be the manager of a rundown stagecoach station. Mary's husband had originally planned to run the station, but he was shot and killed by a ruthless guerilla Jason Flandrau. This book has a lot of well developed characters including the quiet gunman with a past, Temple Boone, Matty, the irish maid, Wat Tanner, the boy who knows too much, and Scant Luther, the old station manager with a grudge. The story has a very interesting plot. Soon after she comes to Colorado, mary learns that Flandrau is a respected figure in the community and is up for Governer. Flandrau soon learns Mary is in town, and wants her dead because she could tell the town about all the plundering and wrecking he did in the south. To find out what happens to Mary, and to find out about Temple's interesting past you should read his book.

Women of the West
By Nash Black
THE CHEROKEE TRAIL is one of the few westerns that treat woman as main characters in a realistic manner. Mary Breydon and her daughter Peg struggle to survive after her husband is murdered.
A previous reviewer took issue with a Confederate being in the Colorado Territory while the Civil War as raging in the East. For the answer to that one I will refer him to Hampton Sides, BLOOD AND THUNDER (Life of Kit Carson) and a little known incident of the Confederate foray from Texas into New Mexico and Colorado. Mr. L'Amour's research and knowledge of western history was on the money.
