Unio Mystica as Ultimate Purpose
By OAKSHAMAN
_What is the Glass Bead Game? It is no less than the highest reason that an entire future civilization exists. It is the grand and ongoing synthesis of all knowledge into a unified, integrated whole (a Unio Mystica.) It is an attempt to forge a holographic intellectual world where all is interconnected and reflected in every part. This is a mission to weave the golden thread of significance and meaning through every part of a culture- science and the arts and the spiritual are all unified into a system of concentric, interpenetrating rings. All this is primarily accomplished by using the language of music and mathematics as common universal symbolism (the "glass beads" are part of a symbolic physical aid that was once used for this purpose.)

_It is no wonder that the book places the first origins of the game with Pythagoras, Gnostics, and Socratic ethics. No wonder that the League of Journeyers to the East also figure prominently in its development. To some extent the Game has been the goal of all sensitive and introspective individuals and groups down through the ages.

_All of this stands in stark contrast to our own Feuilletonistic Age where all knowledge, all culture, is unsynthesized, chaotic, and largely meaningless babble.

_The crisis that develops from this is that even if you accomplish this grand synthesis in some isolated ivory tower refuge of intellectual contemplatives- it isn't enough. It is necessary to reach out to the entire society once it is achieved in the same way that a bodhisattva attempts to enlighten the rest of mankind instead of individually passing onto Nirvana. The entire society must be made whole and sacred and not just an isolated elite. This is the realization that comes even to the Magister Ludi, the Master of the Game.

_For the game to be ultimately meaningful we have to coach everyone to eventually become Masters.

Brilliant!
By Enantiodromos
This book, so it's been suggested, is in part Hesse's response to the misunderstanding of his previous book, Steppenwolf. It is a brilliant exploration of themes of institutions and loyalty to them, and of personal excellence and humility. It is also in many ways an indictment against anti-intellectual popular culture, and in this sense the book is absolutely visionary. The titular subject of the book, the Glass Bead Game, is, furthermore, a dazzling invention of an almost surreal character. Finally, the book is tied together by several compelling, intricate characters. Magister Ludi is at the very pinnacle of my favorite books list.

Those curious enough to finish this book will be rewarded.
By mark.griffin.jr@rispaper.com
Hermann Hesse, mystical madman genius, blessed 20th century culture with an irresistable body of work. Magister Ludi, like so many of Hesse's novels, takes the reader inside the mind of its central character. Joseph Knecht, a human MENSA meeting, is given every opportunity to develop his intellect to its fullest potential. The majority of the book follows Joseph's charmed life from childhood music lessons to his apex as master of the glass bead game, a metaphor for the most balanced expression of music, philosophy, mathematics, and all that is and will be. Set in a futuristic, utopian nosuchplace long after the last of the great wars, the story begins and ends in an intellectual arena which seems to exist outside of time. Many readers may grow tired of the scores of pages dedicated to the ramblings, conflicts, and introspections of a scholar. However, the truly devoted reader will find unparalleled examples of Hesse's penchant for both harsh reality and eastern mysticism in the last hundred pages. The posthumous writings of Joseph Knecht, a collection of "homework assignments" written by the Magister Ludi in his youth, yields some beautiful poems and parables.

Loved the story and the history

Loved the story and the history. Do not like his taking God's name in vain and his sex stuff is unnecessary, especially for a historical novel.

As good as the original, a masterpiece of literature.
By Tom Bruce
Rarely is a sequel, whether it be a movie or book, as good as the original. But, rest assured that this is not the case of "The Way West," A.B. Guthrie's follow-up to "The Big Sky," and the second of six books in The Big Sky series. How good are these two volumes? Well, the first has been designated "the best novel of the American West" by the Western Literature Association. "The Way West" won the Pulitzer Price for fiction in 1950. Which is the better book? Impossible to tell, they're almost like two books in one. "The Way West" begins where "The Big Sky" ends in 1846 as Dick Summers, a true mountain man introduced in the original, is living as a farmer in Missouri. His sickly wife has just died and he is urgently asked to be the guide for a wagon train departing from Independence to Fort Vancouver in Oregon. What follows next are months of exciting adventures among the Indians, rattlesnakes, stampeding buffalo, raging rivers, and other obstacles they have to surmount in the quest to the west. The pacing of "The Way West" is similar to "The Big Sky." Quiet passages wherein we get to really know the many principal characters of the book interspersed with tension filled episodes of action. The details of the trek, the dialogue, the characters are so real that this book compels the reader to keep turning pages late into the night. It's amazing to discover and reflect on what these settlers went through to expand our country from sea to sea. I can't say enough good things about these two books, and once I take a breather, I'll move on to the next book in the series.

Takes the reader back in time
By Eddie Wannabee
A little better than Carry the Wind by another author. Surprising use of language, with certain words considered racy these days, if dialogue matches the historical facts, then it was a revelation how they expressed themselves those days. Faster paced, with plenty to enjoy most of the time.

Bantam Books proudly publishes the newest Louis L'Amour hardcover:
May There Be a Road
Available now!

From the Publisher
Tell Sackett was packing thirty pounds of gold and no worries--until he got to the ferry at the Colorado. Trouble found him there. It looked like a black-eyed woman, pretty as a young filly and a hundred times more set to buck any man. It looked like a gang of hardcases with ideas about other folks' gold. And trouble looked like the other side of the river--the hottest, driest, most brutal desert on the continent.

From the Inside Flap
One of the superior sagas of our time, the chronicle of the Sackett family is a great achievement of one of our finest storytellers. In Mojave Crossing, Louis L'Amour takes William Tell Sackett on a treacherous passage from the Arizona goldfields to the booming town of Los Angeles.

THE FAMED PSYCHIATRIST SUGGESTS BRINGING BACK THE CONCEPT OF "SIN" AND RESPONSIBILITY
By Steven H Propp
Karl Augustus Menninger (1893-1990) was an American psychiatrist and a member of the Menninger family of psychiatrists who founded the Menninger Foundation and the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. He wrote many books, such as Man Against Himself, Love Against Hate, The human mind, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 242-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in this 1973 book, "In all of the laments and reproaches made by our seers and prophets, one misses any mention of 'sin,' a word which used to be a veritable watchword of prophets. It was a word once in everyone's mind but now rarely if every heard. Does that mean that no sin is involved in all our troubles---sin with an 'I' in the middle? Is no one any longer guilty of anything? Guilty perhaps of a sin that could be repented of or atoned for?... Anxiety and depression we all acknowledge, and even vague guilt feelings; but has no one committed any sins? Where, indeed, did sin go? What became of it?" (Pg. 13) He explains, "'What WAS the sin that no longer exists?' ... I have in mind behavior that violates the moral code or the individual conscience or both; behavior which pains or harms or destroys my neighbor---or me, myself." (Pg. 17) He adds, "although it has disappeared from serious use in our workaday vocabularies, perhaps it has not gone from the back of our minds. We shall see." (Pg. 24)

He suggests, "I believe there is 'sin' which is expressed in ways which cannot be subsumed under verbal artifacts such as 'crime,' 'disease,' 'delinquency,' 'deviancy.' There IS immorality; there IS unethical behavior; there IS wrongdoing. And I hope to show that there is usefulness in retaining the concept, and indeed the word, SIN, which now shows some signs of returning to public acceptance. I would like to help this trend along." (Pg. 46)

He argues, "The use of diagnostic labels in a pejorative way is a sin of which I have myself been guilty. I began to see how much harm is caused and consequently I have discontinued it. Dr. Thomas Szasz of New York State goes even further than I; he will not even concede the existence of ANY 'mental illness.' He believes this to be a mythical, political, and damaging designation. I have myself proposed that we speak rather of 'Personality Dysorganization' of various degrees rather than 'mental disease,' psychosis, neurosis, and the like." (Pg. 171)

He asserts, "The assumption that there is sin... implies both a possibility and an obligation for intervention. Presumably something is possible which can be reparative, corrective, meliorative, and that something involves me and mercy---we want them, too. But we want to think we can help ourselves and our fellows if only a modicum. Hence sin is the only hopeful view... Therefore I say that the consequence of my proposal would not be more depression, but less. If the concept of personal responsibility and answerability for ourselves and for others were to return to common acceptance, hope would return to the world with it!" (Pg. 188) He concludes, "If we believe in sin---as I do---we believe in our personal responsibility for trying to correct it, and thereby saving ourselves and our world." (Pg. 220)

Despite the lapse of 40 years since this book was written, Menninger's proposal for a return to responsibility and the corresponding possibility of redemption still have a strong resonance with the modern temperament, I would think.

Related to the sin vs. crime/ evil part, but didn't agree with some things like the judicial system and jails. It might not be perfect, but arrangements are much better and you can only do what you can considering the type of people you're dealing with. Only half way through.

Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler

Darkness At Noon stands as an unequaled fictional portrayal of the nightmare politics of our time. Its hero is an aging revolutionary, imprisoned and psychologically tortured by the Party to which he has dedicated his life. As the pressure to confess preposterous crimes increases, he re-lives a career that embodies the terrible ironies and human betrayals of a totalitarian movement masking itself as an instrument of deliverance. Almost unbearably vivid in its depiction of one man's solitary agony, Darkness At Noon asks questions about ends and means that have relevance not only for the past but for the perilous present. It is—as the Times Literary Supplement has declared—"A remarkable book, a grimly fascinating interpretation of the logic of the Russian Revolution, indeed of all revolutionary dictatorships, and at the same time a tense and subtly intellectualized drama..."

Amazon.com Review
This splendid novel is set in the tumultuous Soviet Union of the 1930s during the treason trials. Rubashov, the protagonist and a hero of the revolution, is arrested and jailed for things he has not done, though there is much about the current Soviet state that veered from his ideals as a revolutionary. His investigators, Ivanov and Gletkin, seek a public confession and interrogate him using a number of methods. Through the ordeal, Rubashov reaches an epiphany or two while his interrogators suffer the cruel fate of the Soviet machine. Darkness at Noon succeeds as political/historical novel, but even more so as a refreshing tale of the human spirit.

Review
"A remarkable book, a grimly fascinating interpretation of...all revolutionary dictatorships, and at the same time a tense and subtly intellectualised drama of prison psychology" Times Literary Supplement "[Darkness At Noon] is written from terrible experience. From knowledge of the men whose struggles of mind and body he describes. Apart from its sociological importance, it is written with a subtlety and an economy which class it as great literature. I have read it twice without feeling that I have learned more than half of what it has to offer me- Koestler approaches the problem of ends and means, of love and truth and social organisation, through the thoughts of an old Bolshevik, Rubashov, as he awaits death in a GPU prison" New Statesman "Along with Animal Farm and 1984, this book formed part of the essential bookshelf of those intellectuals who repudiated their early illusions about the Soviet Union" -- Christopher Hitchens The Week "It brilliantly portrays the chilling tyranny of Soviet Communism" -- Sandy Gall The Week

Wanted to read this book for a long time. Finally did. I feel like I will reread this many times because I truly enjoyed the writing.. the complexities behind what was going on in the reality of Stalinist Russia, and how the ideology of the Party allowed for members to eat their own once they were expendable and used up. Very gripping and telling of what happens when a government is given this ultimate control over the people, and the horrors that happen against human nature when the views and stability of the Party override fundamental human rights and liberty.

The view from inside the dustbin of history
By M. A. Krul
Arthur Koestler's "Darkness at Noon", his magnum opus, is more than just a book. It is not a novel, nor is it an essay; it is a memory and an experience, a warning and a vision. It takes the reader into a nightmare world that is nevertheless real, an alternative history that is more history than alternative, and if he has a sensitivity to questions of history and politics, it is sure to be imprinted on his mind forever. In summary, it's one of the most powerful political books of the 20th Century.

The theme of the book is the experience of Stalinism, in particular the Stalinist Great Purges and the show trials during the late 1930s. Arthur Koestler himself was a Party socialist for much of his life, and only left the Soviet Union in 1938. Having known many of the Old Bolsheviks personally, he saw the state of the revolution taken over by Stalin and his henchmen, and witnessed the slow (and sometimes fast) destruction of the revolutionary old guard.

It's the experiences of this infamous Great Terror of communism, seen from the eyes of a communist, that form the basic of this book. The plot is rather limited in scope: the protagonist, N.S. Rubashov (probably loosely modelled after Bukharin), is arrested for 'counterrevolutionary crimes', and spends the rest of the book in prison, being interrogated and prepared for the inevitable show trial. This of itself is not particularly clever, but that is not the core of the book.

The real core of the book is Rubashov's fundamental theoretical paradoxical position: all his life he has believed in submitting the "subjectivity" of the individual to the demands of the Party, in the knowledge that they were building a future for mankind. All his life he has believed in History working its will, in the inevitable eventual victory of the right over the wrong. Yet now this same history has taken a turn, and he and the works of his generation are destroyed by the progeny of his own revolution. His interrogators, first the cynical intellectual Ivanov and later the farmer's son-turned-cadre Gletkin, want him to sign a series of damning confessions that are palpably false, which all parties involved know. Yet if the Party demands this of him, if this indeed is the will of History, can he resist? And moreover, how is it possible to begin with that the revolution led to the terror of "No. 1", the totalitarian Party leader?

Through a series of short but thrilling scenes in interrogation and longer periods of reflection, monologue interieure, and flashbacks, the downfall of a committed revolutionary and intellectual and his generation are painted as vividly and profoundly as one could demand of literature. This book is more powerful than Orwell's "1984" and yet more understanding than any of the common anti-communist works of the last century; it is a testament, dedicated to the generation of Trotsky, Bukharin, Rykov, Tomsky, Rakovsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev, and all the other fighters for socialism at the birth of that bloodiest of centuries.

"1984" in 1938
By Gerald Brennan
I'm afraid to read anything else by Arthur Koestler.

"Darkness at Noon," his excellent novel about an aging revolutionary awaiting a show-trial and execution in Stalin's Soviet Union, is so thoroughly compelling and readable, alive with ideas and general brilliance, and so widely recognized as Koestler's masterpiece, that I fear his other books will be disappointing by comparison.

This, on the other hand, may well be my favorite book. Ever. Despite the fact that my "to-read" pile is a paper stalagmite that grows faster than I can chip away at it, I ripped through this one twice in under six months, and if I were somehow locked in the bathroom with only this on the toilet tank, and forced to start it a third time--I can't imagine this actually happening, but bear with me here--I can't say I'd be all that disappointed.

This reads like "1984," but it preceded Orwell's book, and presumably greatly influenced it. More importantly, although the real 1984 eventually rolled around to make Orwell's dystopia seem at least somewhat absurd (in execution, if not idea and desire), this still feels incredibly realistic.

And scarily, this is more relevant to today's America. While our level of freedom and political discourse may be completely different than that of Stalin's Soviet Union, the methods they used would not be unfamiliar in Guantanamo or Abu Grahib--or in some police precincts. Not the shrill and scary tactics of "1984," but the soft and simple: psychological games, sleep deprivation, and the like. Sleep deprivation may seem downright kind in the pantheon of torture, and I'm sure it starts off relatively innocuously--"They're terrorists, they're criminals, so why should we coddle them? Why should they get a good night's sleep?"--but any tactic whereby one compels the body to betray the mind is torture. And the sad thing is that torture doesn't work. Forget all the crazy ticking time-bomb scenarios, the fact is simple. Torture. Doesn't. Work. It does not provide reliable information or accurate confessions. And this book shows why. Rubashov, kept up for days on end, becomes willing to say or do anything for a few blessed moments of sleep. He will sell himself out. He will say anything. He will lie.

The strange peculiarity of Soviet Russia is that the victim and the torturers both know these lies are lies. But he says them, and they listen, because they both have their roles to play. The show trial is not really a trial. It is only a show.

But the great thing about "Darkness at Noon" is that it isn't just a polemic about tactics or a lesson about history; it is a powerful meditation on good and evil, and the extent to which we allow the latter in the short term because we believe it will somehow help us get the former in the long term. One reads this and feels sympathy not just for Rubashov, but for his interrogators, because they grapple with a timeless question: can we, and should we, make today difficult and imperfect and unjust for the sake of a better tomorrow?

This is a weighty question, and the book abounds with such meditations: like Dostoyevsky's works--to which it is clearly in debt--it is a philosophical novel with true weight and depth. In "The Grand Inquisitor", one of the most famous chapters in literature, Dostoyevsky concocts a prison scene in which the head of the Spanish Inquisition discourses to Jesus on why the Church felt it necessary to behave in ways contrary to Jesus' teachings. And this book feels like "The Grand Inquisitor" writ large. Though it revolves around ideology instead of religion, the effect is similar--disciples explaining to the master why they needed to stray, why they needed to corrupt and pervert their beliefs in order to save them from external enemies, why they needed to destroy the movement in order to save it.

On this and many other issues, Rubashov ponders but--importantly--does not always come up with clear answers. "How can one change the world if one identifies oneself with everybody?" he muses early on, then asks, "How else can one change it? He who understands and forgives--where would he find a motive to act? Where would he not?" I don't think Koestler wants to give us answers. Like the best artists, he's not so much interested in telling us what to think as he is in making us think. It's not always about finding answers; it's about remembering to ask questions. And that's something we need to remember today.

Wonderful, wonderful book of fiction
By D. Mckinzie
Although the author cautions from the beginning of the book that this is just a book of fiction, you can't help but think, "It could have happened like this." The story is a fictional account of Mary from the day she "becomes a woman" until just after she gives birth to Jesus. I think this is a wonderful book and one that every Christian should read at least once (I try to read it every Christmas, although I don't always make it) along with it's two sequals, Three From Galilee and The Messiah. The old familiar stories, heard from childhood in countless Sunday Schools, comes alive in a whole new way. You see exactly what each of the characters actually gave up. It becomes a story of a young girl, called to do extraordinary things, while those around her mostly believe that she has done wrong. And Marjorie Holmes has a great gift; the characters in her book seem so real you almost believe that it HAD to have happened that way and with those people. This is not a "preachy" book, really. It's a great book about a young girl called to a great role in history and how she and those who loved her lived through it.

Review
Our foremost storyteller of the authentic West, Louis L'Amour has thrilled a nation by chronicling the adventures of the brave men and women who settled the American frontier. There are more than 260 million copies of his books in print around the world.

From the Publisher
Forty gunslingers from the Lazy A have got Tell Sackett cornered under the Mogollon Rim. They're fixing to hang him if they can capture him alive, fill him extra full of lead if they can't. But the Sacketts don't cotton to that sort of treatment. Hunt one Sackett and you hunt 'em all. So they're riding in from all over -- mountain Sacketts, outlaws, cattleman, bankers and the rest. They'll fight with Tell on this one -- if they can get there before Tell kills all forty hardcases himself.

From the Inside Flap
Filled with exciting tales of the untamed frontier, the Sackett series is one of Louis L'Amour's greatest contributions to American fiction. In The Sackett Brand, L'Amour spins the story of a courageous man who must face overwhelming odds to track down a killer.

But then Tell is shot without warning -- and when he finally come to, he discovers that all traces of his life have vanished. His wagon has disappeared and his beloved wife, Ange, is missing. Sackett vows to stop at nothing to find out what became of her. But when the truth emerges, it is more terrifying than he ever imagined -- and it will take all his strength to find out once and for all why the forces behind the mystery won't stop until Sackett is dead.

Not THE Sackett, just SACKETT!
By Denny Smith
The title of this book is simply SACKETT, and it is the best of the series, even better than The Daybreakers and To the Far Blue Mountauns. Tell is my favorite of the Sackett brothers. He is the easiest to identify with, and I enjoyed reading this book, which introduces you to one of L'Amour's best characters. Sackett is a good book for anyone just starting to read L'Amour and is a good lead-in to the rest of the Sackett Series.

This book has the makings to become a classic.
By Amazon Customer
When I read this book I got a rush because I could tell it was a good one from the beginning. The Idea of the book was what got me interested in the first place. I had read some of the other Sackett books by Louis L'Amour and this one got me jumpin. It is just the Idea of every one coming to Tell's aide when he needs it the most. It has the makings of becoming a classic if more people would recognize it's greatness. I read it almost tree months ago and I can remember every bit about it. I am Seventeen and if I can like this book so much I am almost positive that others my age, older, and Younger would love it too. I loved reading it so much that I could not put it down.

Thumbs Up!
By A Customer
This has to be one of the best of Louis Lamour. What makes this one stand apart is that it is less predictable than his other novels, in that everyone doesn't end up riding away into the sunset. It has been years since I read this novel, but I can still remember it vividly.

From Library Journal
It has been years since the orchid-growing eccentric Nero Wolfe has been outside his beloved home. This novel finds him in upstate New York with Archie Goodwin where he must endure poor food, uncomfortable chairs, warm beer, and three dead bodies. A family feud over the fate of a prize bull (send him to a stud farm or a steak house) plus tacky publicity stunts and blackmail all fit into the situation, told from Archie's point of view. Michael Prichard's reading is clear and adds to the atmosphere and overall enjoyment of the story. Recommended.?Denise A. Garofalo, Mid-Hudson Lib. System, Poughkeepsie, NY

Review
"It is always a treat to [hear] a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." -- The New York Times Book Review

"Nero Wolfe, the fat detective of Rex Stout's novels, towers over his rivals...he is an exceptional character creation." -- The New Yorker

"Rex Stout...raised detective fiction to the level of art. He gave us genius of at least two kinds, and a strong realist voice that was shot through with hope." -- Walter Mosley

Out of the office means a lot of cows
By D. Eckhart
A lot of this book is centered around character building for Archie. It is a strange one since it does not take place in New York and Nero Wolfe is out of his house. It occurs in a small rural town at the site for an agricultural fair where Wolfe was going to submit orchids for judging. It centers around the a bull, though there is more to it is not a bovine murder mystery. As I mentioned, it does provide a lot of character drama surrounding Archie. Wolfe does solve the situation, but he is present even less than usual since they are out of the office. I found the plot, once it had been set up, to be quite easy to figure out. Some of the other novels are more complex. This one seems to be more about the new setting and about bulls and how many AR Daughters they've sired. I learned a bit about cow diseases here as well. Since they are away from the office for the entire book, none of the other cast show up: Fritz, Saul Panzer,, etc.

So far the only Nero Wolfe I did like. OK the beginning but then boring.

Classic Nero Wolfe
By snwlprd
A great story that holds up to multiple tellings! Archie meets his long-time girlfriend (Lily Rowan) in this story and it explains so many things mentioned in later novels! Wolfe is at his best in taking advantage of comfort and in suprising us with his physical ability! The mystery itself is well crafted and enjoyable.

Is there a windy poplars book? it said it ...

Is there a windy poplars book? it said it was there in the series collection but I cannot find it as any one found it? I would buy that but its not available... my books are taking a long time to get here and much longer than my other orders. Sadly, I might not order any more of these beautiful series. I wish I would find this book.

Very Well Written But...A little Romance,Please?
By Atiya Abbas
I think this book was absolutely fantastic. I read this book first and then I read the others though I still have to read a couple more. A flaw in all the books I have so far read about Anne is that the author has created no romance between Anne and Gilbert . I mean a little kissing wouldn't hurt at all and it would make the books so much more romantic and sweet . I don't mean to say that the author has to be totally Danielle Steel but it would have been nice if she had made her books romantic. The worst thing in this whole book was the incessant gossiping of the old ladies at the sewing party. I skipped it because it was so boring. Nevertheless I really like these books and I think the author has described the natural beauty very NICELY. You would feel as if you were there.I find Anne's children very adorable. And I would like to inform the other readers out there that Anne has six children:Jem, Walter, Di, Nan, Shirley and Rilla. I recommend this book to all as it is full of laughter and fun.

A mostly bland books...
By Adi Adler
This book tells of Anne's marriage after having quite a few more children and worries - does Gilbert still love her? Is he still attracted to his college sweetheart?
I didn't feel that Anne had developed enough as a character to be worth another book - maybe it's because her children (lovely as they are) are starting to dominate the book. Maybe it's because unlike the previous books, the changes in her life (e.g. moving to Ingleside and having kids) was not a major "bend in the road" but rather a walk down a straight one from her last book, and even though the road might be a lovely one, it does not contain as many surprises as a bend would. All of her other books had a bend, or a little twist, between them, and I feel I miss it in this book.
The main characters added to this book are the children, and Susan. The children are all somewhat similar to Anne, they are not Anne herself as a child, and they all seemed a little "bland" to me by comparrison to her. Even though they were all difference ages, which would have made them more likely to experience different events on different levels, they do not, which is a little disappointing.
Susan, on the other hand, is nothing but bland - she has her own ways, her own opinions and basically - a woman who knows her own mind, unusual as all of those above might appear to be. She is just so funny sometimes! God bless Lucy Maud Montgomery for inventing her!

Excellent - A Six Star Reading Experience
By FCD117
This is a great novel by an iconic author. I read a good deal and I am embarrassed to confess I had only recently become aware of this novel. Leon Uris is able to make me identify with the characters and care about both the story and what happens to the characters. I have come to learn that this is what makes me love any novel as opposed to just another read. Some authors do not or cannot make me care about the characters.

I have been reading Leon Uris novels in the order in which they were published and also studying the author. Consequently, I had previously read other novels such as "Battle Cry" and "Exodus". I usually like to read the work of authors in chronological order. However, if I had to do this again, I would read MILA 18 before I read Exodus.

Also, by coincidence, I had recently read a more modern novel, "The Nightengale". This was a book club selection. If one likes MILA 18, one might consider The Nightengale. I personally preferred MILA 18, but I am very glad I read The Nightengal. Thank You...

The best book of all time.
By D. Rodney
I won't elaborate too much on the gravitas of this book, other people have given eloquent descriptions aplenty. I will say that I'm a passionate reader, it's my favorite pastime. In a lifetime of good books, this one is my very favorite. I first read it in high school for English lit. (Thank you Ms. Dykes). I've reread it four or five times since then, it never fails to thrill, horrify, inspire and enrich me. I feel like the characters in the book are my personal friends and acquaintances. I keep two copies on my bookshelf, in case I need to give one to a friend. I once read that it was Leon Uris's favorite of all his magnificent books.

it was a great story that I could not put down
By Robert N Newman
I read Mila 18 a lifetime ago so this will a short review, but I hope helpful. To put it plainly, it was a great story that I could not put down. Set during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of WWII when the Germans decided to clean out the last remaining Jews it tells the story of a band of resistance fighters "holed up" against the Germans. I found it hugely emotional! Great story and if you are not very familiar with the story of the Warsaw Ghetto and the Jewish Resistance movement there this is a good read to begin to get knowledgable.
