Another Classic Masterfully Translated
By Matt Benecke
The second of three books that compose the Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri's "Purgatorio" is a continuation of his epic Cantos. Having seen Satan with their own eyes, Dante and Virgil once again breathe fresh air as they surface through an opening in a cliff. Their adventure then carries them to the mountain island of Purgatory where Dante hears tales of woe and sees some familiar faces, all the while drawing nearer to his beloved Beatrice.

Often overlooked as the middle story, Purgatorio is, in its own rights, a classic. It would be my recommendation, however, to read it in order so as not to confuse yourself and to miss out on any of the important events that occur.

What makes this edition so special is the wonderful translation done by Allen Mandelbaum. The notes that are provided make understanding not only the language but the plot and its nuances much easier and consequently much more enjoyable. This is easily the best version on the market today for the casual reader.

Richly detailed, masterfully constructed.
By Michael G.
The year is 1987. The place, London. Someone in the British Defense Ministry is funneling top secret military information to the Soviet Union. John Preston, a British intelligence agent of considerable skill, is handed the rather daunting task of finding out who is doing it and why.

Meanwhile, in Moscow, a diabolical plot is being hatched to bring Communist rule to the British Isles using the most nefarious of tactics.

Frederick Forsyth masterfully interweaves these two storylines using a narrative style that is detailed to the nth degree. The Fourth Protocal is highly suspenseful and filled with unexpected plot twists. Moreover, Forsyth dares to employ the unusual and somewhat risky technique of using a real life historical figure as one of the main characters....in this case the notorious double agent Kim Philby.

The Fourth Protocol is an extremely engaging, well crafted and meticulously researched cold war thriller that does not disappoint. It ranks right up there among the genre's finest.

Outstanding Spy Thriller
By Joseph Boone
The leader of the Soviet Union is approaching retirement and badly wants to strike a major blow against NATO and the west before he hands over power to the next man. This desire ultimately gives birth to a horrific plot to destabilize Great Britain and push it out of the western alliance. John Preston, a British intelligence agent, races against the clock to stop the plan. He not only has to content with top Soviet agents, but is constantly undermined by a boss who sees only political maneuvering and ignores all signs of the imminent danger.

Frederick Forsyth has a strong reputation as an author and many of his strengths are readily apparent in The Fourth Protocol. First, the plot is meticulously laid out and unfolds like clockwork as the novel progresses. The pace is steady and builds nicely right up to the climax. Next, the characters are well developed, probably to a greater than in Forsyth's previous novels (and, no I did not consider that a weakness in his earlier work). Not only is John Preston, the hero, well realized but the supporting cast and villains also come across as very three dimensional. I certainly won't go so far as to say I was rooting for the Soviets, but I did care what happened to many of those characters.

This was the third novel by Frederick Forsyth that I've read. As much as I enjoyed the first two, I had thought this would be my last try because I wasn't as interested in the time and settings of his later novels. But having read The Fourth Protocol, I realize that I simply don't want to stop enjoying this author's work. After all, I never knew that I would be interested in France circa the reign of Charles De Gaulle before reading The Day of the Jackal, and I found that book to be fascinating. Overall, this is an easy novel to recommend to anyone looking for an excellent spy thriller.

Lucy Maud Montgomery also wrote the Anne of Green gables series, which, even as an adult, I find to be excellent reading. I wasn't sure when I ordered this first book, if it would be as good, but I enjoyed it so much, I ordered the other books in the series and hated that there weren't more. At a time in our history where the world is full of violence and instability, Montgomery's stories are a wonderful, life-affirming escape. I told one of my daughters that reading the "Emily" series before bed was almost like going to sleep with a mother's lullaby in my head.

It's no "Anne of Green Gables"
By Laura
I think this book probably suffered in comparison to Anne of Green Gables for me. The characters weren't as charming as those in Anne's books. Anne & Gilbert were one of my first OTPs but there was no real relationship development in this book. I probably would've enjoyed this book more if my expectations hasn't been so high going in.

A dark, starry and mysterious beauty...
By Peter Krausche
Of all the Montgomery novels I have read, I find the "Emily"-Series the best. These books have a dark, starry and mysterious beauty all their own. The series reflects the maturity and mastery which LMM attained near the end of her life in the artistic, sometimes flowery, portrayal of very special people growing in mind, spirit and body. In the Emily-Series, she describes not only Emily's own story, but also the influence her life has on the persons in her environment.
Emily is destined, no, she is fore-ordained, to become a writer. And she must suffer all the heights and depths which such a sensitive soul must suffer to attain her calling in life. Lucy Montgomery does a wonderful job of describing this very special child and her struggles, leading to the moment in which Emily passes the threshold between childhood and womanhood.
Interesting is also Lucy Montgomery's autobiographic influence in these novels. Interesting also, that Emily is psychic, her recurring "flashes" allowing her for short periods to penetrate the veil between this world and the spiritual world around us. Lucy Montgomery would never have had the liberty to write such things in the Anne-Series, also reflecting her growing maturity and self-assuredness as a writer. The pain involved in Emily's growth is sometimes so intense, that the novels even effected me personally. I have read all three books several times, so I warn anybody who wants to take up the challenge: once you start, you won't be able to put them down, so make sure you have enough free time available.

Grey Seas Under, by Farley Mowat

One of the great storytellers of our century writes passionately of the courage of men and of a small, ocean-going salvage tug, Foundation Franklin.  The captain and the crew were mostly Newfounders; the sea was in their blood.  Battered by towering waves, dwarfed by the ships she towed, blasted by gale-force winds and frozen by squalls of snow and rain, the stout ship and her brave crew saved hundreds of vessels and thousands of lives as they battled their ancient enemy, the North Atlantic.

Perfect Storm, eat your heart out!
By ealovitt
The ocean-going salvage tug, `Foundation Franklin' was more than a match for the worst the North Atlantic could throw at her, including Force 10 hurricanes and Nazi U-Boats. Perfect Storm, eat your heart out! Here is the real book about the great-hearted men and their staunch little ships that survived blow after blow from the Atlantic and bobbed up for more.
If the author, Farley Mowat is sometimes guilty of over-the-top prose---well, he lived and worked on the Franklin, and he loved her sturdy lines, her jaunty roll, and every rivet that held her together while she rescued ships that were Goliaths to her chubby, little Baby Huey. No work could have been more dangerous; none required a higher degree of seamanship and courage than dropping a line on a berserk, lunging, steel-hulled freighter, and then towing her through the maw of a mid-December gale, or the shoals and `sunkers' of the Newfoundland coast---something the Franklin did so many times that her crew lost memory of all but their most freakish or man-killing expeditions.
"Grey Seas Under" will give you an interesting perspective on the true maritime heroes of World War II. Farley Mowat doesn't pull any punches when he describes the tension that existed between the expert seamen on the ocean-going salvage and rescue tugs, and their relatively `amateur' counterparts on Canadian and American naval warships. Some of the funniest scenes in the book involve convoys of merchant ships under the `protection' of corvettes and destroyers. Once a U-Boat had been sighted and the merchants steamed for cover, it was up to the Franklin to rescue the ones that ran into each other or shoaled themselves. Usually, the tug had to perform her duties without any cover from the warships.
"The days the salvors (tugboat seamen) spent tethered to fat and crippled merchantmen, crawling along on a straight course at a speed of two or three knots like mechanical targets in a shooting gallery, were the kind of days that would drain the courage from the most heroic man alive...The Germans knew, that for every rescue vessel sunk there would be a score of crippled merchantmen who would never make safe port."
This is a great book about men against the sea, even though the language gets very nautical at times. Read it and you will learn all about Lloyd's Open Form, and the tricks that wrecked merchant masters play to cheat tugs out of their salvage fees. You'll learn to tell the difference between `Monkey Island' and the poop deck---and the difference between `brass monkeys' and true seamen. You'll thrill to the dangers of sunkers, beam seas, and Arctic white-outs. You'll bite through your pipe-stem, just like the Franklin's captain did during those tows when his sturdy little tug steamed back into port with barely enough coal in her bunkers to "cook a pot of beans."
Someone ought to make a movie out of "Grey Seas Under." It's got everything---romance (between man and ship, at least); life-and-death adventures; heroism; humor; and the treacherous ice, wind, and sea of what the author respectfully refers to as `the Great Western Ocean.'

Breathtaking real-life sea adventures as only Farley Mowat could write
By g2 in St.J
A rusty old hulk is resurrected as a sturdy and seaworthy deep-sea salvage tug. The ship and her crew (at work in the early twentieth century, including World War II) face extraordinary challenges as they attempt to save storm-battered ships and their crews from destruction. It's usually stormy weather that gets a ship into trouble, so the tug spends a lot of time in gales and heavy seas, attempting rescues in the open ocean and amongst reefs closer to shore, rigging huge pumps, cables and ground tackle, even divers. She works under international maritime "no cure - no pay" rules designed to encourage rescue and salvage, even in extreme situations. (If you don't succeed, you get nothing for your efforts, but if you save the ship the payoff is huge.) Written in Farley Mowat's usual easygoing vernacular, this is a must-read for sea adventure buffs.

Interesting But Repetitive
By K. Floy
This is an interesting book about the life of a salvage tug on the stormy North Atlantic. It is told from a sailor's point of view which makes for good story telling but may not be as factually acurate as possible. Mowat admits as much.
This is a book that you can stop reading after completing the first half. There are only so many variations on the story of a ship in trouble, bad weather sets in, and the more-than-sea worthy tug heroically comes to the rescue. The book initially holds your attention but becomes highly repetitive by the later chapters.
One thing I did very much appreciate about the book was Mowat's unvarnished explanations of how salvage companies earn their money. It's not an entirely glamorous business and Mowat does a good job of pointing out how one's pecuniary interests leads to decision making. Obviously, salvage tugs don't operate out of the goodness of their heart.

Faith Usher talked about taking her own life and even kept cyanide in her purse. So when she died from a lethal champagne cocktail in the middle of a high society dinner party, everyone called it suicide—including the police. But Nero Wolfe isn’t convinced—and neither is Archie. Especially when Wolfe is warned by four men against taking the case. Deception, blackmail, and a killer who may have pulled off the perfect crime…it’ s a challenge Nero Wolfe can’t resist.

From AudioFile
Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe take on murder by poisoned champagne. The case presents challenges. Michael Pritchard's resolute and somewhat wry narration is perfectly suited to both the characters and the setting--New York in the 1950s. Wolfe's superiority is captured perfectly, and Prichard is quite believable when reading the women in the story. He also shines as Archie, giving voice to his world-weariness and his resolve that the murderer will be identified. The listener can empathize with both his frustration at having to put up with Wolfe and his admiration for his employer. A solid story, with solid narration. Prichard, like Goodwin, gets the job done with style. M.A.M. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Ahhh. Another Really Good Nero Wolfe Novel
By illiandantic
Rex Stout's "Champagne for One" (the 31st book (first published in 1958) in his Nero Wolfe series) is another in his usual style of excellence. Excellent word-craft, nice plot, nice mystery, wonderful characters, and keeps us guessing right to the end. A highly satisfying story. I'm rating it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

a great nero wolfe book.
By Susan B
One of the best of Nero Wolfe. I also recommend Some Buried Caesar, one of more light-hearted books. I read Rex Stout nearly 20 years ago and have just started re-reading them. I am enjoying them more the second time around that i did the first. the plots and characters are ageless! I can still laugh at the unique interplay betwee Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe, still envy the freedom of Nero's lifestyle, and still admire the plots. One of the great things about Rex Stout, is that (unlike some mystery writers that I could name), he doesn't hold out clues or keep secrets that the hero discloses at the end. He gives you the clues (sometimes tossed out in the middle of a paragraph). And sometimes, just sometimes, the reader get the thrill of solving the mystery!

"Champagne For One" - a Nero Wolfe Mystery by Rex Stout
By Susan D. Brager
For over 20 years, I have been collecting Nero Wolfe mysteries, and this was the one I couldn't find. I was delighted to have found it on Amazon! It didn't disappoint - Wolfe, Archie, Fritz and Inspector Cramer were all there, in rare form, as usual. I read and reread my Nero Wolfe mysteries all the time. Rex Stout was a literary genius, using big words that I sometimes I have to look up, plot lines to keep anyone interested, and a large dose of humor. I would recomend this book, as well as any Nero Wolfe mystery by the incomperable Rex Stout.

The Mini Adventure
By David Huang
Fantastic Voyage is really a fantastic voyage. The book starts with a mysterious man on a plasma plane, heading towards some secret destination. Then General Carter and Colonel Reid is introduced. They are the directors of a mission, to welcome a man of great importance. Then Dr. Michaels and Dr. Duval and his assistant Mrs. Cora Peterson is introduced as high, professional doctors. Then the book talks about Charles Grant, an old friend of this mysterious important person. As the scene turns to the airport, Captain Owens is introduced as another good friend of this mysterious person. Finally, the plasma plane lands and the important person, now called Benes, greets Captain Owens. They go into a limousine headed towards headquarters but on the way, a kamikaze car slams into the limousine and injures Benes. There is a blood clot forming in his brain and surgery is impossible to perform because the clot is inside the brain. Therefore, the only way to help Benes is to go into his body using a miniatuized submarine. A crew is chosen, Dr. Michaels, Dr. Duval, Cora Peterson, Capt. Owens, and Grant to get into Bene's bloodstream to the clot to destroy it. Along the way, a series of misfortunes happen and a enemy agent is suspected. First, a mishandled laser gun, then, the air tank leaks, afterwards, many close to death encounters. However, inside the submarine Proteus, relationships develop and new characteristics about each person is discovered. Finally, the mission is a success and Benes is saved.
I was first given the book by my English teacher as a book project. She wanted us to read the book, write questions about the book, find significant paragraphs in the book, locate new and difficult words, and illustrate interesting parts of the book as our book project. Later, she would want us to do commercials and advertise the book to other students inthe class, convincing them of why the book I read was the book to read and buy. At first, I found the book very boring and uninteresting, but for a good grade, I read on. Later, the book started becoming more and more exciting, more action, less talk. At the end, I was hooked on the book and I reread the whole book again.
My favorite part was when the crew was in the process of miniaturization. It was interesting to learn and see how the submarine is shrunk and how the crew reacts to the new experience of shrinking. The process is long and difficult. First, the crew enters the ship and a big machine fires a laser beam at the sub. The ship shrinks to the size of a speck of dust. Then the sub is picked up, ever so carfully and lowered micrometer by micrometer at a time into a saline container. Then miniaturization continues until the large tank is the size of a bottle. Then a hypodermic needle is inserted into the ampule and the ship is injected into Benes' neck. A very interesting book and I really enjoyed the adventure of the mini people.

The name says it all.
By sporkdude
books when I was a kid, except for this one. The thought of miniaturizing one's self and going into a body in order to save it seemed lame and contrived. Because of this, I avoided this book for the longest time. Finally, I gave in and gave it a chance. It was worth it.
The book has some flaws. The flow of the book is not very fluid. It's somewhat abrupt and I was forced to re-read a few paragraphs, especially in the beginning. Even though the level of detail is great, it sometimes became too much and I was bogged down with a cell structure instead of concentrating on the action.
That said, the rest of the book is amazing. Asimov does a great job explaining how miniaturization works, and develops an interesting scenario involving wars, weapons, spies, and scientists in which such a procedure was neccesary under a specific time frame. The characters themselves are not truly developed, but instead are used to focus and contribute to the action. A major plus indeed.
Asimov seems to weave a story where the human body turns out to be a major battlefield. A place where blood flow causes havoc and where white blood cells are monsters. He transports the reader into a new dimension where the mundane suddenly becomes catostrophic. With this, and his knowledge of the human body, he make a great action and suspense novel.
This is a short read and gets to the point. Asimov wanted to write a great tale involving action and biology, and it is well done.

HIGH HEARTS, by Rita Mae Brown

From the celebrated author of Rubyfruit  Jungle and Bingo  comes a stirring novel of the Civil War, a tale of  true love and mistaken identity. Brimming with  colorful characters and vivid settings, High  Hearts is Rita Mae Brown at her most  ambitious and entertaining.

April 12,  1861. Bright, gutsy and young,Geneva Chatfield  marries Nash Hart in Albemarle County, Virginia, the  same day Fort Sumter's guns fire the start of the  Civil War. Five days later she loses him as Nash  joins the Confederate Army. Geneva, who is known  as the best rider since Light Horse Harry Lee,  cuts her hair, dons a uniform, enlists as "Jimmy  Chatfield," then rides off to be with her  beloved Nash. But sensitive Nash recoils in horror  from the violence of war, while Geneva is  invigorated by the chase and the fight. Can she be all the  man her husband isn't? She'll sure as hell try.  But there is a complication, and his name is Major  "Mars" Vickers. This macho major, to his own  shock and amazement, finds himself inexplicably  attracted to the young soldier named "Jimmy."  And this is only the beginning of a novel that  moves with sureness and grace from the ferocity of  battle to the struggle on the homefront, and brings  passion and sly humor to a story of dawning love.  High Hearts is a penetrating,  delightful and sweeping tale that gives fresh life to a  fascinating  time

From Publishers Weekly
If Gone With The Wind had been written from the point of view of soldiers in the midst of battle, it might have read something like this appealing novel that deals with the stupidity of the Civil War and its effect on women. The main character is Geneva Chatfield, daughter of an old Virginia family and horsewoman extraordinaire. When she cuts her hair and follows her husband into battle disguised as a boy, she becomes an outstanding soldier. Her adventures are interspersed with episodes back on the plantation, where her mother Lutie, an old spirited slave called Sin-Sin, and other women must tend the wounded and fight their private battles. Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle, Sudden Death extensively researched this novel; her bibliography includes weather reports and family chronicles from the 1860s. As a result, an obsession with military tactics interferes with her storytelling. Although the chain of events is formulaic and the outcome less than surprising, Brown's style is energetic, her message humane, and her characters unconventional and lively.

A Personal Look at the Civil War
By Belinda Tuton
What a shocking book. The toll of the our most bloody war has never been so real. The descriptions of the battles and aftermath made me want to put the book down and yet never put it down. It made me want to read more about the war.
All of Rita Mae's characters are real, with their fears and flaws. Even though the central charater is Geneva, the depth of each character and their role in the dynamics of the politics of the time is brought forth. There is no minor character in this tale. Everyone, as in the war, has a story and a purpose. WONDERFUL.

Enter the historian
By A Customer
Not only breaking out of the stereotype that cast her as only being able to write lesbian novels, but also showing her mettle as a historical researcher, Brown, delivers a story with a twist -- war loving female and her poetry loving husband who is in but can't stand war. A good behind-the-battle-lines (Southern battle lines) civil war book that nonetheless escapes the usual one-side bias of American writers. The ending is a bit too convenient though.

Rita Mae Brown with a historical novel and at her usual best
By A Customer
This author has proven in many of her books that she will know her subject well before writing about it. The book shows the horrors of the War Between the States from a different viewpoint: a newly married woman whose husband tries to help his southern community in one of this country's worst moments. Ms. Brown's research into the lives of the different people that constituted a southern plantation, gives the reader a new perspective on the relationships between owners, slaves, overseers and the other participants in southern life. Lest this review seem too focused on the educational view of High Hearts, the book is thoroughly enjoyable as a story and easy reading. Rita Mae Brown at her superb best.

The Tempest (Bantam Classics), by William Shakespeare

This joyous play, the last comedy of Shakespeare's career, sums up his stagecraft with a display of seemingly effortless skill. Prospero, exiled Duke of Milan, living on an enchanted island, has the opportunity to punish and forgive his enemies when he raises a tempest that drives them ashore—as well as to forestall a rebellion, to arrange the meeting of his daughter, Miranda, with an eminently suitable young prince, and, more important, to relinquish his magic powers in recognition of his advancing age. Richly filled with music and magic, romance and comedy, the play's theme of love and reconciliation offers a splendid feast for the senses and the heart.

Review
"David Lindley's Tempest is the best edition on the market. [...] If I were ever again to undertake the editing of a Shakespeare play, I would keep Lindley's edition of The Tempest open beside me."
-Studies in Theatre and Performance (UK)

"[Lindley's] edition meets the high standards of the series in an exemplary manner, offering an especially fine introduction."
-Studies in English Literature

"David Lindley's edition of The Tempest is easily the most outstanding version of this ostensibly straightforward yet hugely teasing play produced over the last thirty years. Its precise and scrupulous commentary notes are careful to the variety of ways the text can be spoken on stage. Its notes on the music and songs are admirably evocative, and its economical account of the huge range of critical views will send thousands of readers out in fruitful chases after the play's own multitudinous interests.
- Andrew Gurr, editor of the forthcoming New Variorum Tempest

Tempest in a Teapot
By J. Lawson
I have read the Tempest twice before, once as a teen-ager, once in college and now, in my retirement. I thought I understood the play as a teenager, did not understand it in college and really loved the play with the help of the footnotes in this edition. It brought home the humor as well as the pathos of questions of relationships with family members, the relationships between characters with different levels of social status, questions of loyalty and revenge and other examples of human behavior, even when some of the characters may not be human. Highly recommended.

I needed this book for a college class. It was a fairly easy read with a steady pace, but some of the language was difficult to understand because it is in Shakespearean English. Good quality and arrived on time.
