This book messed with my head...
By CD
Like many 30 and 40 somethings, I discovered the Sweet Valley High universe as a young teen. As a 13 year old, I worshipped these books. 20 years later, I re-read them and was amazed at how hilariously awful they really were. But that was part of the fun, and it didn't diminish my pleasure in them - until I got around to re-reading this one.

I was a fat 13 year old. As a result, I was often the subject of ridicule from the Mean Girl types in my class, much like poor Robin Wilson. However, unlike Robin, my extra pounds did not obliterate my brain cells and make me a mouth-breathing idiot. I was not dense enough that I would have thought the Queen Bee of the popular girls wanted me to be her best friend, rather than her slave. I was not completely devoid of pride to the extent that I would have humiliated myself to try to fit in with the cool crowd. Even though I was fat! Yes, Francine Pascal - fat does not equal dumb and unlikable.

But the most important difference between Robin Wilson and me was that I never managed to go on a diet and lose a ton of weight to the point where I was unrecognizable, within the space of a few weeks. But because Robin DID drop roughly a hundred pounds (and simultaneously gain a hundred IQ points, because according to Francine, all thin people are smart and likeable) and lived happily ever after with the cool crowd at Sweet Valley High, my impressionable 13 year old self assumed that it was possible to do so. And I tried, and failed, because I didn't know how to eat and exercise in a healthy way. That made me think that I really was destined to be a fat loser for the rest of my life. That's a pretty harsh self-image for a 13 year old. I wonder how many other fat girls read this book and thought less of themselves because of it?

With last year's "Sweet Valley Confidential" and this year's "The Sweet Life" hitting the bookstores and e-readers, I've found many fellow former SVH devotees who have also re-discovered the magical world of perfect size 6 figures and Pacific blue eyes. There are whole online communities devoted to snarky discussions of the wonderful awfulness. Taking the Sweet Valley books for what they are - poorly written fairy tales - I can still enjoy them, in a much different manner than when I was a teenager. And yet when it comes to this particular book, there's still a sore place in me that hasn't quite healed.

Sweet Valley High #4 - Power Play
By Raj
Robin Wilson thinks she is Jessica's best friend. She runs errands for her, and acts as a slave to Jessica. Jessica keeps Robin only to do her jobs for her (Jessica). When Robin starts trying out for the Sweet Valley's sorority, Pi Beta Alpha, Jessica makes sure Robin doesn't get in, mainly because she is overweight, and that it would ruin the image of the sorority. Elizabeth feels sorry for Robin and enters her name for the tryouts. Because Jessica is President of the sorority, she humiliates Robin into doing things in front of everyone, to see if Robin would break down and decide to quit. Things become worse when Robin in rejected, and accuses everyone, including Elizabeth of ruining her life. Can Elizabeth try to get through to Robin again? Meanwhile, Jessica is receiving expensive gifts from her friend, Lila Fowler...very expensive gifts! When she goes to the mall, she realizes that the merchandise that Jessica has, have been shoplifted. Have Jessica and Lila started shoplifting? Elizabeth tries to solve that problem as well.

I loved reading this book, mainly because it had a Cinderella touch to it. You really feel sorry for Robin in the beginning and root for her throughout the story. Of course, people can also relate to Robin in real life, because everyone feels like an outcast and wants to fit in any way if they feel they look different from others. Jessica acts her usual conniving self, while Elizabeth has to fix everything and make it right again. This is one of the best Sweet Valley High books and I definitely would recommend it to the fans of the series.

Watch Out Jessica Wakefield...
By Ne0nXSuNsHine
When Tubby Robin Wilson is Pledged by Elizabeth for the Pi Beta Alpha, Jessica and her freinds Cara Walker and Lila Fowler throw her Difficult, and very emabaressing tasks such as running Several Miles around the Track in front of Half the Student Body, getting Bruce Patman to Take Her to the Discomarathon (Ha,ha,ha! Well, it was the Early 80's!), Go to the Beach in a Bikini and Play Volleyball, and Steal Test Answers from thier Overbearing Chemistery Teacher, All in Order to be able to Join the Soroity. When a Mysterious Person (Jessica) Black-Balls her, Robin is Furious after All that Hard Work. Over the Weeks she starts losing Alot of Weight, Wearing Fashionable Clothes, and has Bruce Patman chasing For Her. Soon She and Jessica are Running Against Eachother for Miss Sweet Valley High, she Triumphs, Putting Jessica in Shock. A Side Story is Included. When Jessica starts Recieveing Expensive Gifts, such as a Saphire Colored Scarf, from Lila Fowler who Claims they were Sent from her Aunt in New York, Elizabeth is Curious as to Why she would just Give them Away. When she finds out Lila has been Shop-Lifting for the Attention of her Father, she asks Elizabeth Not to Tell Jessica, which her sister Highly Suspects...Overall, this was a Very Enjoyable read. I was suprised that Lila Connfinded in Elizabeth so much. I didn't even think they were Even Freinds! The Story of Robin and her Loss of Weight was Inspirational, if not Far-Fetched for her to Lose all that Weight in a Week. Reccomended.

Excellent book, very good series
By A Customer
The first book of the Dungeon series is terrific. Very exciting and interesting, it sets the way for the rest of the series. Characters are fairly well developed, and many plot hooks, unexplained events, characters, and ideas are introduced. This leaves much for the rest of the books in the series. The rest of the books are important for a sense of closure and understanding. The Tower is a great first book. The series is a wonderful idea, a playground for the authors. They build upon each other, creating a world and keeping a complex plot on a track the develop as they write. Some aspects of the characters do change from book to book, but that is to be expected with multiple authors. The last book is a great letdown, awful to tell the truth, but the other five make up for it. I read them over and over, some of the ideas are so fascinating and adventures great. I definitely recommend.

The middle four books are really good...
By Ruth K.
I had to put this review here so that people don't miss out on the rest of the series. This is really a review about the series, not just the first book.
I really enjoyed the second book (The Dark Abyss) in this series as a teen. I remembered it so well that I went back and read the other books years later. Books 1 and 6 leave something to be desired, but the concept of the dungeon is so wonderful that you shouldn't let that keep you from discovering the world that lies within. Just don't count on a good conclusion; I had to put down book 6 in disappointment.

Best 6 book series I've ever read
By Wardell
I first read this series in middle school. I re-read the entire series again at 24 and am now 32 about to re-read it again. Best fantasy series I've ever read. I see a lot of feedback about the 6th book, which I enjoyed. I would say it's biggest flaw is in book 4, because of the different authors, the way that one of the charactors speaks (Shriek I believe, the massive spider) is completely different than the other books. That being said, the adventure in the book is still great.

I don't want a lot of groans about it, but I named my son Clive, after the main charactor in this book. Yes, I loved it that much. Was such a wonderful ride and wish they would make a movie on this series. Besides, Clive is a cool name anyways.

Gr 2-4–London's novel portrays the interior life of mistreated part-wolf White Fang while exploring the fundamental nature of wild animals and the brutality inherent in vast Alaskan landscapes and inside men's hearts. It does not seem suitable reading material for primary-grade children, and Lutin's picture-book adaptation does not make an effective argument for the attempt. From the first page, in which White Fang's half-dog mother runs with her mate, One-Eye, Lutin falters; London revels in detailing natural impulses and viciousness, but this adaptation betrays his text with a ludicrous statement about the pair's love for one another. Later pages similarly fail to capture the spirit of London's harsh study of instinct and domestication. Guilloppe's visually arresting illustrations may appeal to some comic-book fans, and several spreads effectively use striking silhouettes to convey menace and action without gruesome detail. But overall, the digital artwork's strong lines and vivid colors feel disappointingly flat, lacking the nuance and delicate power of a natural landscape. While the adaptation glosses over many troubling and violent subplots, like initial owner Gray Beaver's descent into alcoholism and White Fang's repeated beatings and deadly dog fights, Lutin includes two gunshots. Many readers enjoy stories of nature, wilderness, and survival; books by Jean Craighead George, Gary Paulsen, and Roland Smith should more than suffice until they choose to explore Jack London's savage classics unchanged.–Robbin E. Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn Phelan

From the Publisher
The Call Of The Wild is the story of Buck, a dog stolen from his home and thrust into the merciless life of the Arctic north to endure hardship, bitter cold, and the savage lawlessness of man and beast. White Fang is the adventure of an animal -- part dog, part wolf --turned vicious by cruel abuse, then transformed by the patience and affection of one man.

Jack London's superb ability as a storyteller and his uncanny understanding of animal and human natures give these tales a striking vitality and power, and have earned him a reputation as a distinguished American writer.

Great Story
By Cheryl Koopmann
This is a great story that I have read many times. It is one of those books that I fall back on when I need a comforting story to read.
It follows the life of one poor dog as he moves from one master to another, and even ends up as a fighting dog at one point. Its a bit like "Black Beauty" I guess seeing as it follows an animals life, but white fang is more of a story. White Fang is not just some docile horse but a real wild dog that has survived where others haven't. A great read and a great story.

I would like to make one thing clear
By Aleksander
I would like to make one thing clear: Jack London's writing is superb - 5 stars. White Fang is one of the best books ever written. I bought the book as a gift. It looks very nice on the screen. The reality is different. The book is ugly. The font is small. It seems like someone took a kindle version, printed it out as an HTML threw a more or less pretty front cover and hideous, white back cover. If I had the time, I would have returned the book and bought White Fang from Barnes & Noble. So, great read, but terrible edition for the gift.

Wonderful Story and Writing
By Martha Jean Jimenez
I absolutely LOVED WHITE FANG, the book and the animal. If you are not familiar with Jack London's writing, this is the book you should read. I also enjoyed "Mark Eden" and "Call of the Wild." I have purchased some additional books by Jack London. This is not a children's book but I think an older child (perhaps 10 and up) would appreciate it.

Last Stand at Papago Wells, by Louis L'Amour

It was the only water for miles in a vast, sun-blasted desert where water meant survival. So Logan Cates naturally headed for Papago Wells. But he wasn’t the only one. Fleeing the fierce Churupati and his Apache warriors, other travelers had come there too. And when the Apaches found them, they began a siege as relentless and unforgiving as the barren land…and just as inescapable.

The last thing Cates wanted was to be responsible for the lives of thirteen desperate strangers and a shipment of gold. But he knew that if they were to survive, he was their last chance. He also knew that some in the party were willing to die—or kill—to get their hands on the money. If he couldn’t get them to work together, it wouldn’t be the desert or even the Apaches that would do them in—it would be the greed of the very people he was trying to save.

Logan Cates knew the many ways the Arizona desert could kill a man. He had ridden the sunblasted dunes, tracked the Apache over barren lava beds, sheltered in the dry washes of this forbidding land. Above all, he knew a man needed water to survive. Cates rode to Papago Wells a few miles ahead of an Apache war party led by the vicious Churupati. There he met a dozen desert wanderers whom chance had led to the only water between Yuma and hell. There they came under siege by the Indians. And there they would make their stand--with little hope of living beyond the next day and only a hard man named Logan Cates to show them how to conquer their true enemy: fear.

A solid Western adventure
By Michael J. Mazza
"Last Stand at Papago Wells," by Louis L'Amour, takes place in the western Arizona desert not long after the end of the American Civil War. As the story unfolds, a diverse group of individuals converge on the reservoir of the book's title, where they face the fury of an Indian force led by a half-Yaqui, half-Apache bandit.
I have been aware of Louis L'Amour's position as a literary phenomenon for some time; according to the author bio at the end of this book, he wrote more than 100 books (his first full-length novel being published in 1953). "Last Stand" is the first L'Amour book I have read.
"Last Stand" is a solid adventure. L'Amour fills the narrative with intriguing details, and creates a powerful portrait of the land itself. I really got a sense of the danger posed both by the harsh environment and the equally harsh human beings who populate the region. One might say that the ancient, unforgiving desert is the most significant "character" in the book.
The characters include Logan Cates, an archetypal rugged hero ("a man without illusions, without wealth, place or destination"); Grant Kimbrough, a former Confederate colonel who has become a dissolute gambler; Jennifer Fair, the rebellious daughter of an important rancher; Timothy Sheehan, "leather-hard and leather tough," an immigrant and veteran soldier; and others.
There is plenty of action and suspense. Yes, some of the dialogue is corny, and some of the plot is predictable. The story has the overall feel of a morality fable. All in all, a compelling tale of greed and adventure.

The Age of Innocence, by Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton’s masterpiece brings to life the grandeur and hypocrisy of a gilded age. Set among the very rich in 1870s New York, it tells the story of Newland Archer, a young lawyer engaged to marry virginal socialite May Welland, when he meets her cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, a woman unbound by convention and surrounded by scandal. As all three are drawn into a love triangle filled with sensuality, subtlety, and betrayal, Archer faces a harrowing choice between happiness and the social code that has ruled his life. The resulting tale of thwarted love is filled with irony and surprise, struggle and acceptance. Recipient of the first Pulitzer Prize for fiction ever awarded to a woman, this great novel paints a timeless portrait of “society” still unmatched in American literature—an arbitrary, capricious social elite that professes inviolable standards but readily abandons them for greed and desire.

Amazon.com Review
Somewhere in this book, Wharton observes that clever liars always come up with good stories to back up their fabrications, but that really clever liars don't bother to explain anything at all. This is the kind of insight that makes The Age of Innocence so indispensable. Wharton's story of the upper classes of Old New York, and Newland Archer's impossible love for the disgraced Countess Olenska, is a perfectly wrought book about an era when upper-class culture in this country was still a mixture of American and European extracts, and when "society" had rules as rigid as any in history.

Review
"Is it—in this world—vulgar to ask for more? To entreat a little wildness, a dark place or two in the soul?"—Katherine Mansfield

"There is no woman in American literature as fascinating as the doomed Madame Olenska. . . . Traditionally, Henry James has always been placed slightly higher up the slope of Parnassus than Edith Wharton. But now that the prejudice against the female writer is on the wane, they look to be exactly what they are: giants, equals, the tutelary and benign gods of our American literature."—Gore Vidal

"Will writers ever recover that peculiar blend of security and alertness which characterizes Mrs. Wharton and her tradition?"—E. M. Forster

Passion and the outsider
By EA Solinas
It was a glittering, sumptuous time when hypocrisy was expected, discreet infidelity tolerated, and unconventionality ostracized.

That is the Gilded Age, and nobody knew its hypocrises better than Edith Wharton.... and nobody portrayed them as well. "The Age of Innocence" is a trip back in time to the stuffy upper crust of "old New York," taking us through one respectable man's hopeless love affair with a beautiful woman -- and the life he isn't brave enough to have.

Newland Archer, of a wealthy old New York family, has become engaged to pretty, naive May Welland. But as he tries to get their wedding date moved up, he becomes acquainted with May's exotic cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned home after dumping her cheating husband. At first, the two are just friends, but Newland becomes more and more entranced by the Countess' easy, free-spirited European charm.

After Newland marries May, the attraction to the mysterious Countess and her free, unconventional life becomes even stronger. He starts to rebel in little ways, but he's still mired in a 100% conventional marriage, job and life. Will he become an outcast and go away with the beautiful countess, or will he stick with May and the safe, dull life that he has condemned in others?

There's nothing too scandalous about "Age of Innocence" in a time when starlets acquire and discard boyfriends and husbands like old pantyhose -- it probably wasn't in the 1920s when it was first published. But then, this isn't a book about sexiness and steam -- it's part bittersweet romance, part social satire, and a look at what happens when human beings lose all spontaneity and passion.

Part of this is due to Wharton's portrayal of New York in the 1870s -- opulent, cultured, pleasant, yet so tied up in tradition that few people in it are able to really open up and live. It's a haze of ballrooms, gardens, engagements, and careful social rituals that absolutely MUST be followed, even if they have no meaning. It's a place "where the real thing was never said or done or even thought."

And Wharton writes distant, slightly mocking prose that outlines this sheltered little society. Her writing opens as slowly and beautifully as a rosebud, letting subtle subplots and powerful, hidden emotions drive the story. So don't be discouraged by the endless conversations about flowers, ballrooms, gloves and old family scandals that don't really matter anymore.

In the middle of all this, Newland is a rather dull, intelligent young man who thinks he's unconventional. But he becomes more interesting as he struggles between his conscience and his longing for the Countess. And as "Age of Innocence" winds on, you gradually see that he doesn't truly love the Countess, but what she represents -- freedom from society and convention.

The other two angles of this love triangle are May and Ellen. May is (suitably) pallid and rather dull, though she shows some different sides in the last few chapters. And Ellen is a magnificent character -- alluring, mysterious, but also bewildered by New York's hostility to her ways. And she's even more interesting when you realize that she isn't trying to rebel, but simply being herself.

"Age of Innocence" is a subtle look at life in Gilded Age New York, telling the story of a man desperately in love with a way of life he hasn't got the courage to pursue. Exquisite in its details, painful in its beauty.

A book that should be shared between mothers and daughters
By A Customer
I find it interesting and in some ways disturbing how few (openly at least) female viewpoints are expressed among the reviews of this book. Indeed, some of reviews make it appear that there are quite a few males out there who believe females are a sexual "tabula rasa" on which they can write their judgements of what constitutes morally appropriate behavior.
This book must be understood not simply as art, but as a psychological statement, namely that sexuality exists within each of us from infancy on and parents and society deny that at their own risk.
When I was the age of the girls in this book there was no one with the courage to come forward and openly depict the flowering of female sexuality. I lived with confusion and shame about my body and my desires, hurtful feelings that lasted until I was well into my adulthood.
I came across this book in a store one day while looking for something else. I spotted the title and I vaguely remembered a news story about some people wanting to ban it, so I thought I would look at it out of curiosity. The images in it were so beautiful I almost started to cry right there, it was as though I found vindication for the very core of my being.
After taking it home, I decided to share it with my nine-year old daughter with whom I had just recently had "The Talk". It was wonderful being able to show her how her body would change and how she would be beautiful even as she changed from a girl into a woman. It is true there are already books out there that are supposed to address the issue, but so often they take a clinical approach that is scary in its own right. The artistry of this book, combined with the photographer's selection of natural-looking girls (you will not find made-up or coiffed girls in the pages of this book), will, in my opinion, help any girl appreciate her changing body.
Mothers, share this book with your daughters, it will help make so clear the many changes they are going through and how they are positive. No girl should ever have to feel shame of her own body and this book is an important step.

Newland Archer, "a man to whom nothing was ever to happen."
By Mary Whipple
Newland Archer, the protagonist of this ironically entitled novel set in the late nineteenth century, is a proper New York gentleman, and part of a society which adheres to strict social codes, subordinating all aspects of life to doing what is expected, which is synonymous with doing what it right. As the author remarks early in the novel, "Few things were more awful than an offense against Taste." Newland meets and marries May Welland, an unimaginative, shallow young woman whose upbringing has made her the perfect, inoffensive wife, one who knows how to behave and how to adhere to the "rules" of the society in which they live.

When Newland is reintroduced to May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has left her husband in Europe and now wants a divorce, he finds himself utterly captivated by her freedom and her willingness to risk all, socially, by flouting convention. Both Ellen and Newland, however, are products of their upbringing and their culture, and they dutifully resist their feelings because of their separate social obligations. Various meetings between them suggest that their feelings are far stronger than what is obvious on the surface, and the question of whether either of them will finally state their feelings pervades the novel.

Wharton creates an exceptionally realistic picture of New York in the post-Civil War era, a time in which aristocrats of inherited wealth found themselves competing socially with parvenus, and social rules were changing. Her ability to show the conflict between a person's desire for freedom and his/her need for social acceptance is striking. As the various characters make their peace with their decisions--either to conform to or to challenge social dictates--the novel achieves an unusual dramatic tension, subtle because of its lack of direct confrontation and powerful in its effects on individual destinies. This is, in fact, less an "age of innocence" than it is an age of social manipulation.

Wharton herself manipulates the reader--her best dialogues are those in which the characters never actually participate--conversations that they keep to themselves, confrontations which they never allow themselves to have, and resolutions which happen through inaction rather than through decision-making. Filled with acute social observations, the novel shows individuals convincing themselves that obeying social dictates is the right thing to do. Though the novel sometimes seems to smother the reader with its limitations on action, Age of Innocence brilliantly captures the age and attitudes of the era. Mary Whipple

Comfortable read and rearead ad finitum
By Mystery Lover
I read Stout to enjoy the world of Nero Wolfe. Like many others, I enjoy being in the brownstone with Archie and watching the interplay between characters. Stout's stories are always full of small bits of information and erudite vocabulary that keep the dialog alive, not merely a fascilitator of plot. It's like being with old friends whom one trusts.

easy-to-understand stories about the great Greek myths
By Kathryn
Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths offers easy-to-read, easy-to-understand stories about the great Greek myths. I don't find many textbooks approachable and sort of gave up on finding an understanding of classical Greek stories. This book was the remedy; I'm glad I found it.

Even better than the original
By David Whitman
The first cave of time was a breakthrough. This time around, Edward Packard as writer and Don Hedin as illustrator pulled toghether and perfected the ultimate CYOA book. It's wild to conceive that the original survivor would return to the cave once more knowing that he could very well lose his life, but that's what the appeal is all about. There is a strong sense of adventure in these pages and definitely deserves to be back in print.

fun
By Madison
Return to the cave of time is fun because I like how I get to choose whatever I would do in real life instead of going along with the character in the book. I also like how the author writes with excitement and scariness at the same time. I would recommend it for starting readers.

This one is better than the original "Cave of Time," which kicked off this fascinating series. Packard is the best of the series authors, and by this time he has it down to a science.
