Some old favorites
By John A. Jones
These selections cover her English language recordings made after she came to America, with some old favorites represented. Maybe this should have been a two-disc album, to include her earlier work in German.

A Country Doctor (Bantam Classic), by Sarah Orne Jewett

Though not as well-known as the writers she influenced, Sarah Orne Jewett nevertheless remains one of the most important American novelists of the late nineteenth century. Published in 1884, Jewett’s first novel, A Country Doctor, is a luminous portrayal of rural Maine and a semiautobiographical look at her world. In it, Nan’s struggle to choose between marriage and a career as a doctor, between the confining life of a small town and a self-directed one as a professional, mirrors Jewett’s own conflicts as well as eloquently giving voice to the leading women’s issues of her time. Perhaps even more important, Jewett’s perfect details about wild flowers and seaside wharfs, farm women knitting by the fireside and sailors going upriver to meet the moonlight, convey a realism that has seldom been surpassed and stamp her writing with her signature style. A contemporary and friend of Willa Cather, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Julia Ward Howe, Sarah Orne Jewett is widely recognized as a pathfinder in American literary history, courageously pursuing a road less traveled that led the way for other women to follow.

The Last Mile

It had been one of the warm and almost sultry days which sometimes come in November; a maligned month, which is really an epitome of the other eleven, or a sort of index to the whole year's changes of storm and sunshine. The afternoon was like spring, the air was soft and damp, and the buds of the willows had been beguiled into swelling a little, so that there was a bloom over them, and the grass looked as if it had been growing green of late instead of fading steadily. It seemed like a reprieve from the doom of winter, or from even November itself.

The dense and early darkness which usually follows such unseasonable mildness had already begun to cut short the pleasures of this springlike day, when a young woman, who carried a child in her arms, turned from a main road of Oldfields into a foot-path which led southward across the fields and pastures. She seemed sure of her way, and kept the path without difficulty, though a stranger might easily have lost it here and there, where it led among the patches of sweet-fern or bayberry bushes, or through shadowy tracts of small white-pines. She stopped sometimes to rest, and walked more and more wearily, with increasing effort; but she kept on her way desperately, as if it would not do to arrive much later at the place which she was seeking. The child seemed to be asleep; it looked too heavy for so slight a woman to carry.

The path led after a while to a more open country, there was a low hill to be climbed, and at its top the slender figure stopped and seemed to be panting for breath. A follower might have noticed that it bent its head over the child's for a moment as it stood, dark against the darkening sky. There had formerly been a defense against the Indians on this hill, which in the daytime commanded a fine view of the surrounding country, and the low earthworks or foundations of the garrison were still plainly to be seen. The woman seated herself on the sunken wall in spite of the dampness and increasing chill, still holding the child, and rocking to and fro like one in despair. The child waked and began to whine and cry a little in that strange, lonely place, and after a few minutes, perhaps to quiet it, they went on their way. Near the foot of the hill was a brook, swollen by the autumn rains; it made a loud noise in the quiet pastures, as if it were crying out against a wrong or some sad memory. The woman went toward it at first, following a slight ridge which was all that remained of a covered path which had led down from the garrison to the spring below at the brookside. If she had meant to quench her thirst here, she changed her mind, and suddenly turned to the right, following the brook a short distance, and then going straight toward the river itself and the high uplands, which by daylight were smooth pastures with here and there a tangled apple-tree or the grassy cellar of a long vanished farm-house.

It was night now; it was too late in the year for the chirp of any insects; the moving air, which could hardly be called wind, swept over in slow waves, and a few dry leaves rustled on an old hawthorn tree which grew beside the hollow where a house had been, and a low sound came from the river. The whole country side seemed asleep in the darkness, but the lonely woman felt no lack of companionship; it was well suited to her own mood that the world slept and said nothing to her,—it seemed as if she were the only creature alive.

A little this side of the river shore there was an old burial place, a primitive spot enough, where the graves were only marked by rough stones, and the short, sheep-cropped grass was spread over departed generations of the farmers and their wives and children. By day it was in sight of the pine woods and the moving water, and nothing hid it from the great sky overhead, but now it was like a prison walled about by the barriers of night. However eagerly the woman had hurried to this place, and with what purpose she may have sought the river bank, when she recognized her surroundings she stopped for a moment, swaying and irresolute. "No, no!" sighed the child plaintively, and she shuddered, and started forward; then, as her feet stumbled among the graves, she turned and fled. It no longer seemed solitary, but as if a legion of ghosts which had been wandering under cover of the dark had discovered this intruder, and were chasing her and flocking around her and oppressing her from every side. And as she caught sight of a light in a far-away farmhouse window, a light which had been shining after her all the way down to the river, she tried to hurry toward it. The unnatural strength of terror urged her on; she retraced her steps like some pursued animal; she remembered, one after another, the fearful stories she had known of that ancient neighborhood; the child cried, but she could not answer it. She fell again and again, and at last all her strength seemed to fail her, her feet refused to carry her farther and she crept painfully, a few yards at a time, slowly along the ground. The fear of her superhuman enemies had forsaken her, and her only desire was to reach the light that shone from the looming shadow of the house.

At last she was close to it; at last she gave one great sigh, and the child fell from her grasp; at last she clutched the edge of the worn doorstep with both hands, and lay still.

Interesting Perspective
By A Customer
What an enjoyable book! As a 19th century novel,it's slow paced enough to reflect upon the value of one's life and work. The young heroine's plan to study medicine is unaccepted by many people, but Nan is determined. She is lucky to have the backing of her guardian, himself a doctor. His thoughts about and support of her decision are very progressive for the time, and heart-warming. Nan's choice is challenged when she meets an attractive young man. The mores of the time demand that she choose between marriage and a profession. The weight that a profession carried at that time made it more a vocation than simply a job. A person chose seriously, his/her future as her life-long identity and contribution to humanity. This novel was thought producing, and its perspective interesting - I recommend it.

A little masterpiece
By Nina M. Osier
In a small Maine town in the 19th Century, a young woman fights her way through a stormy night to her childhood home with her own child in her arms. A few hours later she dies, leaving her little girl in her own mother's care and with strict instructions that her husband's family must not get custody. Instead she names the little town's doctor to be her daughter's guardian, if the grandmother does not live to raise the child to womanhood. The little girl, Anna "Nan" Prince, grows up with one goal in mind: she wants to become a doctor, too. Not only in imitation of the lonely man who comes to love her as his own child, but because she believes this is both what nature has fitted her to do and what God intends as her life's mission.

Nan's unusual choice of vocation naturally meets tests, none of which she finds it difficult to overcome until - as a medical school graduate, a woman in her 20s - she finally decides to visit her father's family. Faced with the life she might have had, that of a wealthy man's heir in a town where she finds both loving relatives and new friends, she finds herself considering what her new-found family very much wants her to do: give up her dream, and become the wife and mother her society expects every woman to become.

This is amazingly modern story. It moves at a leisurely pace, but no scene is wasted. Jewett goes out of her way to make sure the reader understands that neither she nor her heroine contests the wisdom of the era, that most women certainly do belong "at home" and will be happiest there. I would assume she meant this to help that reader better accept her presentation of Nan Prince as a normal, lovable, sane and feminine female who just happens to be gifted for the practice of medicine. I found both Nan and her story thoroughly enjoyable. So much has changed since Jewett wrote and published this book - but so much has not, too!

Inspirational
By Anita Keays
This little book gives us insight into the New England culture of the late 1800's and what it was like to grow up as a girl in a small town. Having lived in recent years in the very town of the authoress, I found it authentic in the characterization of the community she described. She portrayed the simplicity of New England living and their penchant for using words sparingly. The inspiration came from tidbits of philosophy for the development of the strength of character to overcome the expectation for one's role in life in a way that was not confrontational, but realistically the right thing to do. This little book reminds us that character and manners can make life much more pleasureable.

These are stories that explain background about things or people you thought you knew. They are tales from the "Rest of the Story" radio show. All are amazing and I have enjoyed trying to figure out the ending before I get there. Sometimes I'm even right! Great for a minute's read.

It is a real joy to read. It takes me back to my earlier years when we, the family, always listened to Paul Harvey on radio when we were going to my grandfathers. It's remarkable reading about so many things we are familiar with, but still surprising learning about the origin.

After Matt signs on to join them, he discovers that there is a group of outlaws in the party—gunfighters and thieves that Matt wouldn’t trust for a minute. Die Rich. The promise was gold, a lot of it, waiting in the Big Horn Mountains. The plan was to head out with a handpicked party and nothing but the best in wagons, stock, and goods. Matt Bardoul bought in because the girl he wanted was there. But the tall, rugged man in buckskin sensed there was something wrong even before someone tried to warn him off--and someone else tried to gun him down. Sure enough, as the wagon train journeys westward, a deadly plot unfolds. Now Bardoul is the only man standing between innocent people and a brutal conspiracy of greed, lust, and cold-blooded murder.

High entertainment
By Sue
The wild west comes to life with a rip roaring account of a wagon train heading toward the Northwest to establish a permanent community. Against many difficulties, including a plot by extremely dangerous outlaws, brave and determined settlers ban together to fight for each other and for their future. The poetic descriptions of the land and the people was stunning. Very good story.

Sixteen-year-old Echo Sackett had never been far from her Tennessee home—until she made the long trek to Philadelphia to collect an inheritance. Echo could take care of herself as well as any Sackett man, but James White, a sharp city lawyer, figured that cheating the money from the young girl would be like taking candy from a baby. If he couldn’t hoodwink Echo out of the cash, he’d just steal it from her outright. And if she put up a fight? There were plenty of accidents that could happen to a country girl on her first trip to the big city.

No matter that Echo Sackett was young, and a woman, and had never been far from the valley. She was still a Sackett -- sharp and smart and a better hunter than most of the men she knew. Like her bold ancestors, Echo couldn't ignore a challenge. A sure hand with a horse, a dead shot with a rifle, and fast with her wits, Echo traveled to the mountains of Tennessee, coming up against ruthless killers who's stop at nothing to cheat her out of her inheritance. There she'd prove once and for all the she could ride the river with the best.

Fifth of the series. Strong female character
By Craig Clarke
Echo Sackett is one of the few women mentioned of the family. She is young, but she is a better shot than her brothers. Echo is also a strong female character who still aspires to be ladylike and not masculized.
But she still knows to "expect Higginses" when she finds she is due an inheritance and travels alone to retrieve it. Fortunately, being a woman is an advantage in a world of men who will underestimate her abilities.
I admire L'Amour for writing such a strong, young female character. Girls may become interested in reading westerns after their introduction to Echo Sackett.

Just plain fun
By PATRICK OHANNIGAN
Louis L'Amour writes like a girl, and when he's telling the story of 16-year-old Echo Sackett, that's an excellent thing to do. Echo leaves her mountain home in 1840 to claim an unexpected inheritance in the City of Philadelphia, and the story is principally about her efforts to outwit and outfight the criminals who want to make sure she doesn't get back to the mountains with what is rightfully hers.

Echo, every inch the lady, has spunk and smarts enough to go with the knife she calls her "Arkansas Toothpick." Being a Sackett, she also has a lively sense of her family history. As in most L'Amour books, the Sackett ethos -- help your kin at any cost -- is on full display here. I also enjoyed the book because it includes a free black man and a gallant city boy, not to mention serious villains. Their adventures, and reactions to them, are true to the time and place of which they're part.

It's also worth noting that the moral code that suffuses this book -- the idea that doing good deeds is like scattering bread on the water -- is L'Amour's version of what author Catherine Ryan Hyde would famously call "Pay it Forward" many years later.

In short, on the river or off of it, Echo Sackett is good company, and not just another pretty face. She reminds me of a family friend who ignored the unspoken navy blue dress code to interview for an elementary school teaching job wearing a lime-green skirt and matching Eisenhower jacket. You'll enjoy this story even if you haven't had the good fortune of knowing a young woman of such character.

A strong woman, but not a bull-headed one
By A Customer
I loved this book because, first of all it was a Sackett book and second it was about one of the few mentioned Sackett women. Echo is young , but not too young to realize when someone is trying to pull the wool over her eyes. Dorian Chantry is just the type of man she needs, not too controlling, and Oh so cute. I loved it so much that I read it in about three hours one night then about five times since. It's one of my favorite L'amour books. Read it!!

Missing Parts of Chapter Nine
By Amazon Customer
I love to reread Grace Livingston Hill books over and over. This kindle version is missing the first few pages of chapter 9. I verified it by pulling the book off of my bookshelf to see just what was missing. About 3 pages of the first part of chapter 9 are missing. LOTS of TYPOS!!!!

Good book with disappointing flaws
By L. Allen
The one star rating is not for the book itself. The book itself is very good(although not one of my all time favorite Grace Livingston Hill books). What is totally unacceptable is that there are pages missing in the book. I have tried on both my Kindle and my Kindle PC reader and both have the same problem. In locations #1023 and #1395, there is just a half page of nearly solid black with some unreadable letters. When I go to the next location, it is obvious that at least one and possibly several pages are missing. What a disappointment! I know I only paid $1.00 but I still expected to be able to read all the pages :(

The Empty Land: A Novel, by Louis L'Amour

For thousands of years the lonely canyon knew only wind and rain, wild animals, and an occasional native hunter. Then a trapper found a chunk of gold, and everything changed overnight.

In six days a town called Confusion appeared . . . and on the seventh it could disappear, consumed by the flames of lawlessness and violence. On one side are those who understand only brute force. On the other are men who want law and order but are ready to use a noose to achieve their ends. Between them stand Matt Coburn and Dick Felton: one a hardened realist, the other an idealist trying to dig a fortune from the muddy hillside. Outnumbered and outgunned, Felton and Coburn can’t afford to be outmaneuvered. For as the two unlikely allies confront corruption, betrayal, and murder in an attempt to tame a town where the discovery of gold can mean either the fortune of a lifetime or a sentence of death, they realize that any move could be their last.

On the edge of the frontier, boomtowns like Confusion sprang up overnight. Here honest men came to work the mines, while thieves, gamblers and outlaws worked on them. But in Confusion there was more at stake than law and order--the mines themselves were the target of a violent plot. Matt Coburn had cleaned up tough towns before, but he wanted no part of Confusion. Too many enemies knew he was there, too many lies had been told. Now there's only one way out of Confusion for Coburn--a path of honor that could cost him his life.

L'Amour - Master Painter With Words
By Wendy K.
Louis L'Amour is my favorite author. I started reading his books about 36 years ago and they are the rare ones that I can read over and over again and never get tired of. Mr. L'Amour had the rare talent and ability to paint a picture with words so well you can almost put yourself right in the scene. It helps that I grew up in the West and familiar with the land, animals, and plant life but L'Amour's ability with words could put me right in the desert or in the mountains with his characters. His characters are always strong, sometimes colorful, and always there is something to learn from them. They were the stuff people in the West were made of. The main character in this story was no different, faced with enemies on all sides he proved to be a survivor. A great read.

The Swiss Family Robinson (Bantam Classics), by Johann David Wyss

“For many days we had been tempest-tossed…the raging storm increased in fury until on the seventh day all hope was lost.”

From these dire opening lines, a timeless story of adventure begins. One family will emerge alive from this terrible storm: the Robinsons—a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four sons, plus two dogs and a shipload of livestock. Inspired by Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, this heartwarming tale portrays a family’s struggle to create a new life on a strange and fantastic tropical island. There each boy must learn to utilize his own unique nature as their adventures lead to difficult challenges and amazing discoveries, including a puzzling message tied to an albatross’s leg. But it is in the ingenuity and authenticity of the family itself, and the natural wonders of this exotic land that have made The Swiss Family Robinson, first published at the beginning of the nineteenth century, one of the most enduring and imitated stories of shipwreck and survival.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-- It goes without saying that, in the process of condensing and rewriting these books down to a fourth-grade reading level, most of the distinguished aspects of the works--writing style, language, atmosphere, characterization--have been sacrificed for a simple, not to say simplistic, master-plots approach that conveys the incidents but fails to impart the justification for their continuing endurance in the canon of juvenile literature. The books are illustrated with some attention paid to the sense of the plots and characters. For those who persist in the fallacy that knowing what the so-called "classics" of children's literature are about is a satisfactory substitution for actually experiencing them by reading the original, this series is acceptable. For the rest of us, it's as if someone's painted a guppy white and called it Moby Dick. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library

Check the publisher very carefully before you buy "Swiss Family Robinson."
By Kiwi
Check the publisher very carefully before you buy "Swiss Family Robinson." One of the versions available, published by General Books LLC, has reviews associated with completely different imprints of the book from genuine publishers.

Be warned that the contents of the version of Swiss Family Robinson published by General Books LLC is completely unedited garbage. Also be warned that when you do the "Look Inside," you're not looking at the General Books LLC version, you're looking at an image of the book from a genuine publisher that actually edits and checks their work. And the reason is....

General Books LLC puts together books using an OCR automated scanning device which misses complete pages. There are numerous Typos and there's no table of contents. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EDITING of any kind done to the book, and the scanning is done by a robot (which the publishers website says can miss pages).

This is all stated on the publishers web site (google them and read - you'll be as stunned as I was when you get all the details). The Almost every review of books published by General Books LLC (around 500,000 of them from one imprint or another now listed on Amazon) by buyers is negative, many are extremely so.

If you have bought the version from General Books LLC by mistake, you can return to Amazon within 30 days(but check Amazon's Return Policy for the details) .

Personally, I always liked Swiss Family Robinson, my one star review is for the General Books LLC version.

Incomplete translation / conversion
By Robert L. Huggins
The story is, of course, a classic! I doubt many would finish reading it in these days given how dated the language and story line feel. My one-star rating is solely due to the fact that this particular version is incomplete. The missing pages have a profound impact on enjoying / gaining a full understanding of the story. I feel the version description should mention the missing text!

Original translation
By Stephen Balbach
The Swiss Family Robinson was initially written in German by Swiss author Johann Wyss in 1812, and then soon after an accurate English translation was completed by William Godwin in 1816. The Godwin translation remained the standard in English for a generation or two, but by the mid-19th century the number and variety of English translations began to multiply - there were no enforceable copyright laws and translators freely added episodes, changed names (and even genders) of some of the characters and cut portions of the text to conform to changing views on education and aesthetic tastes. There are probably over a dozen such variations and most who read the novel today are not reading the original (the 2007 Penguin Classics edition, edited by John Seelye, is the 1816 Godwin translation, which is the closest to the original). I have now read two: William Kingston's 1879 adaptation (one of the more common adaptations) and Godwin, and I believe the original translation of Wyss by Godwin is better. It's not abridged like most later versions so certain scenes just make more sense - for example some of the characters are more dynamic, like Ernest shows himself to be a capable bloodthirsty killer like his brothers (a scene cut from later editions to maintain his "bookish" nature) - and the theories on education are classic Rousseauian (he is mentioned twice in the narrative).

This isn't your childhood Swiss family. Godwin's 1816 translation has rarely been in print until recently - most versions floating around are some variation of Isabelle de Montolieu's 1824 French adaptation (William H. G. Kingston's 1879 English translation of Montolieu's French adaption is probably the most common). In Montolieu/Kingston's version, the original ~400 page that Wyss wrote has been abridged to about 150 pages, with an additional 150 pages or so of new material added to the end (with an entirely different ending, new characters, etc). So if you've read Swiss family as a child, and are looking for an "unabridged" version, you may find Godwin's 1816 translation missing a lot of material - simply because Wyss never wrote it in the first place.

What version to read? I would say Montolieu/Kingston's version (and others) are more "kid friendly" mainly because the Godwin translation is from 1816 and as such uses some language that is dated and has passages that would probably be boring or not make sense without historical context. So in a way there is no "right" version since most readers for the past 150 years have not been reading the "original" anyway. I would probably recommend the Montolieu/Kingston version for juvenile readers and the Godwin version for adults - or even better, read all of Godwin plus the second half of Montolieu/Kingston which is all new material, the first half just being an abridged version of Godwin.

In the end I enjoyed the novel for what it is - a great adventure and inspiring family story. Many classic stories are challenging and interesting but not always "fun" - this one is just a great story and fun to read. It's even more fun knowing there are is a whole world of alternative versions available, with more adventures and different endings, but I'm glad to have read the original as it was written by Wyss (and his sons).

This unforgettable odyssey into the distant past carries us back to the awesome mysteries of the exotic, primeval world of The Clan of the Cave Bear, and to Ayla, now grown into a beautiful and courageous young woman.

Cruelly cast out by the new leader of the ancient Clan that adopted her as a child, Ayla leaves those she loves behind and travels alone through a stark, open land filled with dangerous animals but few people, searching for the Others, tall and fair like herself. The short summer gives her little time to look, and when she finds a sheltered valley with a herd of hardy steppe horses, she decides to stay and prepare for the long glacial winter ahead. Living with the Clan has taught Ayla many skills but not real hunting. She finally knows she can survive when she traps a horse, which gives her meat and a warm pelt for the winter, but fate has bestowed a greater gift, an orphaned foal with whom she develops a unique kinship.

One winter extends to more; she discovers a way to make fire more quickly and a wounded cave lion cub joins her unusual family, but her beloved animals don’t fulfill her restless need for human companionship. Then she hears the sound of a man screaming in pain. She saves tall, handsome Jondalar, who brings her a language to speak and an awakening of love and desire, but Ayla is torn between her fear of leaving her valley and her hope of living with her own kind.

What a beautiful and unique book!
By onetimereviewer
I loved Clan of the Cave Bear and was happy to see that it had many reviews and was rated four and a half stars overall. When I saw that 'Valley' got a measly three and a half stars, (!) I was compelled to write a review.

Auel's wonderfully lucid descriptions and rhythmic prose are a sumptuous delight that continue in 'Valley of Horses'. The flora and fauna pop out of the book and I can almost smell the grassy herbaceousness of the meadows where Ayla lives and hunts. When I am reading valley of the horses, everything else seems to melt away and I become a part of the landscape, and a 'fly on the wall' in an ancient clan.

Her musings on plant life and animal behavior will delight anyone who has read Thoreau or Emerson and you will recognize in her book some of the same childish wonder you often find in Thoreau's diaries or Emerson's poetry.

The structure of the novel is well plotted and executed. The story flows at a pleasant pace and has a good amount of action and excitement. We are introduced to a few new characters and Ayla invents spectacular new instruments for hunting and survival. The heart of the book, in my opinion, is her relationships with the animals who are her neighbors in the valley. Even though the real climax of the book occurs when Ayla and Jondalur finally meet, the biggest part of the book deals with her isolation and her relationship with the horse who comes to mean everything to her.

Highly, highly recommend.

Entertaining and Educational
By Carol Alexander
I enjoyed listening to this series, although this time I listened with my husband beside me. I was embarrassed at first because of all of the sex between the main characters, but after that I just rolled my eyes and waited for it to be over. The religious descriptions are slightly seductive, so I would suggest the listener really understand what their belief system is before reading. I enjoyed the series and Jean M. Auel is a master craftsman. Kudos.

I'm definitely reading book 3
By Robert
3 stars because I was expecting more Neanderthal and modern human interaction.
The story successfully shows why, no matter how skilled or independent a person is the lack of companionship can set you back a step or two. Aila was winning in many ways except for one and it was a big one.
I recommend this book to anyone who feels like they are lacking empathy.

Madeline Fraser, radio talk show host extraordinare, had a natural dread of dead air. So when one of her on-air guests signed off at the mike after drinking a glass of a sponsor's beverage, it was a broadcasters nightmare come true. Enter Nero Wolfe. He agrees to take the case, with his sizable fee contingent on his solving the murder. But to Wolfe's surprise, everyone connected to the case now lies in unison about it.

About the Author
Rex Stout (1886-1975) was the creator of Nero Wolfe, one of the most popular detectives of all time.

Michael Prichard is a Los Angeles-based actor who has recorded over 400 audiobooks. Smart Money named him one of their “Top Ten Golden Voices.”

From AudioFile
A murder before a studio audience on a radio broadcast means a high-profile case and a $20,000 paycheck, both important to Nero Wolfe, who needs to boost his bank account quickly to pay for his luxurious living. Reading in Archie Goodwin's first-person voice, Michael Prichard gives the narration a touch of noir tone but keeps the emphasis on Rex Stout's witty dialogue as the wise-guy sidekick. His Nero Wolfe is suitably commanding as he belittles and deceives to get the truth from a gallery of dishonest suspects. Fans also will want to hear IN THE BEST FAMILIES, which resolves the battle with crime boss Arnold Zeck that is set up here. REX STOUT PROVIDES REFUGE
By Dusty Rhodes
I have a complete collection of Rex Stout's books; hard back and paperback. I have read all of them 2 to 5 times, but having lost so much of my sight I can only read my Kindles. I still desire to go to the house on 35th Street. so I'm gradually adding all of the books to my Kindles. I highly recommend Rex Stout's writing, but I don't recommend the Nero Wolfe books written by another author after Mr. Stout's death. I love these books and am offended at the attempt to trade on Rex Stout's creation even if his heirs approved. Mr. Stout affords an opportunity to increase your knowledge, but his imitator uses vocabulary gratuitously, so rather that inform it breaks the flow of the writing. Don't miss the opportunity to make friends with the residents of the old Brownstone on 35th Street in New York City. I found respite from a chaotic world. I go there often.

A walk back in time
By Leyla
I started reading books about Nero Wolfe very May year's ago, when I was in secondary school - the we're that sort of books, exciting, non offensive and always with a build up to a Christie like exposee at the end. They were about the true America - or so it seemed to an Aussie girl expose to its depiction on early tv. These never fail to entertain and walks me back into time that was so much simpler. So glad that for awhile I can be transported there with so good mysteries.

Good humored and entertaining
By Amazon Customer
I probably hadn't read a Rex Stout mystery for 40 or 50 years, so enjoyed this one tremendously. The banter never ceases; every word is freshly polished. Does anyone today write as well as he did? This book makes me want to go back and re-read all the other books he wrote about Archie and the lovable Nero Wolfe.
