Democracy in America: The Complete and Unabridged Volumes I and II (Bantam Classics), by Alexis de Tocqueville

From America's call for a free press to its embrace of the capitalist system, Democracy in America--first published in 1835--enlightens, entertains, and endures as a brilliant study of our national government and character. Philosopher John Stuart Mill called it "among the most remarkable productions of our time." Woodrow Wilson wrote that de Tocqueville's ability to illuminate the actual workings of American democracy was "possibly without rival."

For today's readers, de Tocqueville's concern about the effect of majority rule on the rights of individuals remains deeply meaningful. His shrewd observations about the "almost royal prerogatives" of the president and the need for virtue in elected officials are particularly prophetic. His profound insights into the great rewards and responsibilities of democratic government are words every American needs to read, contemplate, and remember.

Review
"No better study of a nation's institutions and culture than Tocqueville's Democracy in America has ever been written by a foreign observer; none perhaps as good."
--The New York Times

Praise for the work of Joseph Epstein:

"Epstein is one of the premier contemporary American essayists...What is so remarkable about Epstein as an essay writer is that he'll begin a discussion at some personal place...and end up in another place relevant to us all. He enjoys making language work, not making it jump through hoops for show." --Booklist

"Joseph Epstein is an essayist in the brilliant tradition of Charles Lamb. He moves so effortlessly from the amusingly personal to the broadly philosophical that it takes a moment before you realize how far out into the intellectual cosmos you've been taken."
--Tom Wolfe

"Joseph Epstein's essays no more need his identifying byline than Van Gogh's paintings need his signature. Epstein's style--call it learned whimsy--is unmistakable; for Epstein addicts, indispensable."
--George Will

"Joseph Epstein is the liveliest, most erudite and engaging essayist we have." --James Atlas

"If Epstein's ultimate ancestor is Montaigne, his more immediate master is Mencken. Like Mencken, he has fashioned a style that successfully combines elegance and even bookishness with street-smart colloquial directness. And there is nothing remote or aloof about him."
--John Gross, Chicago Tribune

A classic but the author is a man of his times
By Jens Guld
A classic. He vaguely knew that there might be a problem with the negro slavery but he did not give it much thought, probably because he was a man who thought more highly of property rights than of human rights. He was himself a man of property after all and a man of his times.
He also doesn't give any thought to the fact that the leading revolutionaries after having gotten rid of the British turned against their less affluent followers and created the American constitution plus the Alien and Seditions laws. Or perhaps he just approved, he was involved in something rather similar i France after 1848.
He absolutely believed that religion was necessary or at least necessary for other people. Here too he was very much a man of his times. Most propertied men in those days believed in "Voltaire for the father and the sons, Monsieur le Curee for the wife and the daughters". The people who promoted the Baptist missionary Billy Graham during the Cold War were of pretty much the same opinion.
That said this is an abolutely must read.

No chapter headings only numbers
By Amazon Customer
The bigest problem with the book is the lack of chapter headings, the only thing in the Kindle version is chapter numbers. I would not recommend this book untill they include the headings.

The last 100 pages are well worth the wait!
By Denny Smith
The Haunted Mesa is an extremely convincing, well-written and underrated book, and is certainly the most unique in the long, distinguished career of Louie L'Amour. After reading the last 100 pages of this novel I find it difficult to give it anything less than five stars. However, the development of the plot in the first 250 pages does drag on for a while, but I feel most of it is necessary to the story once Mike Raglan crosses over to the Other Side. If you start to get a little bored in the beginning, don't stop reading. All of this about the logbook, the "hairy ones" and Eden Foster does become important later on. Personally, i enjoyed the book all the way through, but I know some people think L'Amour stalled too much before getting on to the parallel world of the Anasazi.
L'Amour does an excellent job of convincing the reader that this story could indeed happen, even though you may think the plot is far-off at first. This book is an incredible combination of history, science fiction and fantasy, and is a must-read for anyone interested in ancient Indians, time travel, or the unknown. Despite the bad rap this book has always gotten, it is definitely one of L'Amour's best, and contrary to popular belief, L'Amour's health was NOT failing when he wrote The Haunted Mesa. The book was originally written ten years before it was published, but Bantam refused to print it at first because they didn't believe anyone would buy a science fiction story by a western writer. Boy, were they wrong. The book got to number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list once it was finally published, and proved to be one of L'Amour's most popular among his fans, even though all the critics seemed to hate it. So give The Haunted Mesa a chance, and I think you will be glad you did.

The Haunted Mesa
By Ricky N.
I picked this book up a few weeks ago at 8:00 pm and didn't stop until I had finished. This book combines elements of the western, Indian lore, science fiction and fantasy, and is unlike any other L'Amour novel. A fantastic read!

"haunting read"
By Kay's Husband
This book is a "haunting read" to the degree it is unforgettable. I've read many Louis L'Amour books down through the years, but this one is certainly the most atypical of the entire lot.

Released in September,1987, little less than a year before he died in June, 1988, it has as its locale the contemporary Southwestern frontier. His subject is the cliff dwellers, the Anasazi, who left very little trace of themselves after the year 1250 a.d. The setting is the four-corner area of Utah and Arizona, in the San Juan river area of southern Utah, with mysticism and Indian lore in abundance.

There is not too much to say, for fear of undercutting the suspense filled reading contained in these pages. One cannot quite be sure in what direction the plot will next flow. Especially when reading of the Varanel, a strong arm group to hold their own with any modern day swat team. It can be said with certainty there are no other characters in Louis L'Amour's books to match those found here.

New books by Louis L'Amour are greatly missed by his thousands of readers. But since his second home seemed to be the desert, having a lifetime's knowledge about and love for desert existence, it allowed him to leave his readers one swell final book to read.

Semper Fi.

From Publishers Weekly
Ludlum has never come up with a more head-spinning, spine-jolting, intricately mystifying, Armageddonish, in short Ludlumesque, thriller than this. A Peking leader of seemingly irreproachable reputation, secretly a Kuomintang fanatic, has masterminded a plot to take over Hong Kong via political assassination, the result of which would be civil war in China and possibly global disaster. His principal agent is an assassin-for-hire masquerading as the legendary "Jason Bourne," a one-time secret U.S. agent now, under his real name David Webb, struggling with the aid of a psychiatrist and his loving wife Marie to recover from amnesia. Only one man can destroy the conspiracy: Webb, who must be persuaded to re-assume his Bourne identity, track down the impostor and through him lay a trap for the vile Shengthe "persuasion" to be by way of his abducted wife. The action jolts from the back alleys of Hong Kong and Kowloon to a secret government complex in the Colorado mountains to the seats of power in Peking and even the interior of Mao's tomb. Every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger; the story brims with assassination, torture, hand-to-hand combat, sudden surprise and intrigue within intrigue. It's a sure-fire bestseller. 650,000 first printing; $150,000 ad/promo; BOMC selection; Franklin Library limited edition.

From Library Journal
In this sequel to The Bourne Identity , David Webb, still suffering flashbacks to his Jason Bourne persona, is forced to undertake a final, possibly fatal mission after his wife is kidnapped. He must find and capture an assassin who is posing as Bourne in Hong Kong. By so doing he'll foil a plot that could plunge the Far East and then the world into war. Ludlum's latest has a best seller quality that many imitate but few master. You can quibble about this being too long, too talky, too preposterously implausible, but you can't quit reading. As often happens with sequels, this is not quite up to the standards of the original, but legions of Ludlum fans will send it soaring up the best seller list. BOMC main selection. Intense action, passable plot, a gripping read
By Szu-ping Lee
To begin with, I would say this is a terrific action thriller. The plot is straight forward but illogical at a few occasions. Somehow I forget about those flaws when I finished it. Why? because of the intense action and elegant violence by one Jason Bourne. This is a book that you have to finish in one shot. Stopping in the middle would just take away all the fun there is in it and make it incredibly boring and confusing. Instead, putting oneself into our Medusan's shoes would make one crave for more.
I do have some gripes about Robert Ludlum's writing style. First, he seemed enjoy using foreign languages in the book (French in Bourne Identity, Mandarin and Cantonese in this one). I'm a through and through chinese from Taiwan, and I tell you that even I don't understand of the Mandarin that he used in this book. For those ones I comprehended, some were just misused to an ridiculous extend. It's almost apparent that he didn't consult somebody who actually know the language. Second, the background is in the 80s, the political atmosphere formulated in the book is just laughable. I can attest to that because I was there. Also Mr. Ludlum had no clue about the oriental way of thinking. I'm not sure why he chose the background which he is not familiar with. It's an attempt anyways, so I don't blame him that.
Overall, a good reading and the character of Jason Bourne/David Webb is a huge hit. I would recommend it to all thrill/action seekers.

Bad Print Jobp
By Amazon Customer
I ordered The Bourne Supremacy back in January 2016. I started reading it a couple of weeks ago. The book is good, however, I reached page 440 to find that the next 48 printed pages are from an entirely different book, Dime Store Magic by Kelly Armstrong. So my book doesn't pick up again until 489. It's too late for me to return it. :(

Book and Movie both great and not the same
By David Gortner
I think the book and the movie are both great. As most avid fans of Robert Ludlum and the Bourne Trilogy know, the plots of the books and movies of the same names are completely different. I have surfed the web looking for reasons for this and have so far failed to find the justification for completely different plots - so I must use my intuition.

The Bourne novels were written in the 80's - the first novel, the Bourne Identity, represented action in 1978. Bourne was a product of the Vietnam war. The assassin Carlos the Jackal (a real person), featured in the novels, was captured in real life in 1994.

On the other hand, the movies are all from the decade of 2000. The movies also feature current technology. I believe the film's creators wanted current high tech weapons and communications to be on display in the movies, not stuff from the 70's or 80's. Carlos was already captured so to use him would date the movies. The international scene that was a backdrop to the book trilogy (in 1978 and later) did not seem suitable (my opinion) for the filmmakers so they chose completely different plots.

The book is a great, but very complex read - don't let your attention waver for a minute or you will be lost!

L'Amour Never Fails To Deliver
By Randy Johnson
The earliest thing he remembered was falling from the window and landing on the street. No idea who he was or why the shot in the head which had taken his memory. All his instincts and habits were still there though. Just no identity.

And men were hunting him.

He heard one speak of Ben Janish as the one who'd shot him. But not why or why they wanted to kill him.

He escapes and comes to learn his name was Ruble Noon. Bits and pieces came slowly and he wanted to help the young woman named Fan Davidge. Her ranch was overrun by outlaws, her father dead, and rumors he'd hidden a fortune away for her.

And apparently he knew where it was. Except he didn't. Not anymore. Nor how he was tied to the young woman.

But crooked folks didn't believe that. Judge Niland. Peg Cullane. Davish. They all wanted the gold and him, not to mention Fan Davidge, dead.

Another fine western from the late author.

Greek Drama (Bantam Classics), by Moses Hadas

In power, passion, and the brilliant display of moral conflict, the drama of ancient Greece remains unsurpassed. For this volume, Professor Hadas chose nine plays which display the diversity and grandeur of tragedy, and the critical and satiric genius of comedy, in outstanding translations of the past and present. His introduction explores the religious origins, modes of productions, structure, and conventions of the Greek theater, individual prefaces illuminate each play and clarify the author's place in the continuity of Greek drama.

About the Author
AESCHYLUS: A complete fifth-century Athenian, he was the creator of her proudest artistic achievement, tragedy. By using more than one actor he changed the form of plays from recited poetry to true dramatic dialogue, thereby making possible the sweeping grandeur of his great trilogy, THE ORESTEIA.

SOPHOCLES:The most popular tragedian of the Golden Age, he expanded the scope of classic drama by his technical innovations and lyric intensity, leaving the world such masterpieces as ANTIGONE and OEDIPUS THE KING, the play Aristotle called the perfect model of Greek tragedy.

EURIPIDES: A prolific author, Euripides wrote some one hundred plays. In contrast to his contemporaries, he brought an exciting-and, to the Greeks, a stunning-realism to the "pure and noble" form of tragedy. His influence altered drama forever, and he is regarded today as the originator of modern dramatic sensibility.

ARISTOPHANES:The most famous comic playwright of ancient Greece, he wrote what are now the only extant representative of Greek Old Comedy. His three outstanding characteristics-gross obscenity, exquisite lyricism, and a serious concern for decency and morality-may seem a strange combination to the modern reader. Aristophanes is still regarded by modern audiences as a master of risqué wit and brilliant comic invention.

Good value, though outdated
By A Customer
Editor Moses Hadas was a world-renowned scholar, and his notes can be helpful, but the translations he presented in this volume have become outdated. Most Greek translations sacrifice something through the morality, prudence, or artistic judgment of the translator. This is a fine text for the value, but if clarity is more important to you, seek a more recent translation.

Required reading for adults
By Charles J. Mcmahon
This should be required reading for anyone who wants to break from the fantasy of being taken care of (by god, by religion, by another human being, by the government, yadda yadda yadda ) and learn to take care of him/herself. Give up the fantasy -- reality is enough.

This is a very depressing book. I would not recommend it to anyone. I'm not sure why it was recommended to me.

Painfully thought provoking...intense.
By M. Belle
This is a MUST READ for current and future therapists.

An End to Innocence is for those who love to ask "why", the introspective, and anyone who wants to grow. If you are looking for a feel good read, wanting to escape reality in some way, or are looking for some sort of validation in relation to either, this may not be the best read for you.

An End to Innocence encouraged me to look within, and ironically, in some ways, to stop looking within (at least not so hard).

Realizing that there is no inherent meaning in life, and that it must be created on your own, is both lonely and scary, but enlightening beyond any words I could write here.

On June 25, 1989, the naked corpse of schoolteacher Susan Reinert was found wedged into her hatchback car in a hotel parking lot near Philadelphia's "Main Line."  Her two children had vanished.  The Main Line Murder Case burst upon the headlines--and wasn't resolved for seven years.  Now, master crime writer Joseph Wambaugh reconstructs the case from its roots, recounting the details, drama, players and pawns in this bizarre crime that shocked the nation and tore apart a respectable suburban town.  The massive FBI and state police investigation ultimately centered on two men.  Dr. Jay C. Smith--By day he was principal of Upper Merion High School where Susan Reinert taught.  At night he was a sadist who indulged in porno, drugs, and weapons.  William Bradfield--He was a bearded and charismatic English teacher and classics scholar, but his real genius was for juggling women--three at a time.  One of those women was Susan Reinert.  How these two men are connected, how the brilliant murder was carried off, and how the investigators closed this astounding case makes for Wambaugh's most compelling book yet.

From Publishers Weekly
The bizarre, seven-year-long case of an Upper Merion, Pa., high school teacher, Susan Reinert, found murdered in 1979, and her two missing children receives masterful treatment from police novelist Wambaugh, who is now building a reputation as a true-crime writer. He shows the dead teacher's lover, colleague and beneficiary of her insurance policiesamounting to about $750,000to have been a superficial intellectual, able to dazzle impressionable high school students and to gather around himself a coterie of naive and trusting neurotics. There is no doubt in the author's mind that William Bradfielda Pied Piper of the chronologically adult but psychically underdevelopedcommitted the crime in concert with the former principal of the school, Jay Smith, whom he portrays as a sociopath. The skein of murder is highly complex, but Wambaugh unravels it superbly. 150,000 first printing.
Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Wambaugh's latest is a true murder story in an unlikely setting: an upper middle-class suburban Philadelphia high school. English teacher Susan Reinert and her two children were the victims of a bizarre conspiracy hatched by her colleague William Bradfield and her former principal Jay Smith. Both men were convicted after a seven-year investigation. The case is also the subject of Loretta Schwartz-Nobel's Engaged to Murder ( LJ 2/1/86). However, Wambaugh's account is preferable. Where Schwartz-Nobel seems perplexed by Bradfield's character, Wambaugh convincingly identifies the guilty men's motives as sociopathic. Also, Wambaugh is a master of the crime genre and he deftly handles the twists and turns of the intricate plot. Recommended. Gregor A . Preston, Univ. of California Lib., Davis

Unbelievable . . . creepy . . . but true -- very disturbing!
By A Customer
The tale of Susan Reinert is one of the most riveting true crime books I have ever read. Certainly the story -- details about Bill Bradfield, Dr. Jay Smith, Vince Valaitis, Sue Myers, etc. -- was convoluted . . . and difficult to follow at best. But it just proves Bradfield's manipulation of everyone around him. The story becomes difficult to follow and almost unbelievable because the story itself is practically unbelievable. Bradfield told so many tales and lied to so many people that even he had trouble keeping up with it and remembering what he told and who he told it to. Dr. Smith proves to be a pretty sinister character himself -- someone who did a lot of terrible things (and was possibly involved in the disappearance of his own daughter and her husband! Frightening!). It is hard to believe that these people are real -- that they live(d) and breathe(d) and exist(ed) in Upper Merion -- it certainly makes for an entertaining and unbelievable cast of characters. But they are not just characters in a book -- they are REAL PEOPLE -- and that is the scary thing. It makes you stop and think and look around at your friends and neighbors and coworkers and wonder what is going on in their heads. Creepy!
What is most disturbing is the fact that Reinert's young children were unfortunately involved in this horrible situation, and that their bodies have never been found. Even more frightening is that Susan Reinert's body may have disappeared in much the same way -- except that there was life insurance money to be gained (by Bradfield) and therefore a body had to be found. The sad thing is that everyone seemed to be under someone else's "spell" -- for the most part, all these seemingly intelligent teachers (molding the minds of Upper Merion's youth, no less!) were so enthralled and entrenched in Bradfield's life, so willing to believe him, so willing to participate in his "cloak and dagger" games, so prepared to believe him until too many suspicions and too much evidence mounted against him. And Bradfield! His relationship with Dr. Smith -- whatever the extent of it -- was certainly not on the up-and-up. A frightening look at this disturbed group of people and the lengths someone will go to attain something (in this case, money). All I can say is, you have to read it to believe it. I was too young to remember the case when it happened, so I can't compare the book to any newspaper headlines or stories or actual experiences . . . but I was engrossed in the book, totally interested. Wambaugh does an excellent job pulling the reader into the lives of these people. The situations are chaotic and elaborate -- at times almost ridiculous and laughable, because everyone was so blind to the "charms" of Bradfield and Smith for so long. I only wish there had been pictures of the principle characters, so I could have put faces to the names.

It's amazing how clueless and idealistic you can be at 17...
By Richard H. Romig Jr.
As a graduate of Upper Merion--with Jay Smith's signature on my diploma and Bill Bradfield's loopy enthusiasm whenever I successfully translated Catullus still ringing in my head--this book was a "must-read." I CAN say that Wambaugh does his usual good job of capturing certain facets of the main characters and presenting the case, particularly from the viewpoint of the investigators, whom he lionizes. (Unfortunately, the intervening years have led to revelations about their mishandling of evidence and own character failings...which tarnishes their victory somewhat.) He also succeeds in pointing out the inverse relationship between intelligence and common sense that often exists among academics, and definitely existed here. I found his description of sociopathic behavior and how it forged the bizarro bond between these two men especially illuminating. However, it's what I usually like best about Wambaugh's books that forms the basis for my only criticism: there's no mistaking the fact he's an ex-cop. That means he forms his judgments about the perpetrators, followers, and even the victim early on and sticks to them. These people weren't quite so black and white. That being said, it's a good read that captures the gothic feel it strives for, and makes me extremely sad for the mother and children who were lost...and angry at people I respected who had so much potential.

Best known for the novels Little Women and Little Men, Louisa May Alcott brought the story of her feisty protagonist Jo and the adventures and misadventures of the March family to an entertaining, surprising, and bittersweet conclusion in Jo’s Boys. Beginning ten years after Little Men, Jo’s Boys revisits Plumfield, the New England school still presided over by Jo and her husband, Professor Bhaer. Jo remains at the center of the tale, surrounded by her boys—including rebellious Dan, sailor Emil, and promising musician Nat—as they experience shipwreck and storm, disappointment and even murder.

Popular for over a century, Alcott’s series still holds universal appeal with its powerful and affectionate depiction of family—the haven where the prodigal can always return, adversity is shared, and our dreams of being cherished, despite our flaws, come true. In this edition of Jo’s Boys, readers once again experience a treasured classic by one of America’s best-loved writers.

You'll laugh and cry
By Judy
It is truly a shame that the highest number of stars you can rate a book is five, because I would give this book a million stars if I could. It is truly one of the two best books I have ever read. (The other off course is Little Women).
Little men is a book that can make you both laugh and cry. The morals inside are more useful than any of the ten commandments. Louisa May Alcott has definetly done it again.
Without giving away everything, these are some of the reasons why you will enjoy the book:
1) You see Jo grow up. She is no longer the wild child who's impetuous and androgynous character often lead her to trouble. She inherits maternal qualities that you never expected Jo to have.
2) You will get more insight on the professor. Although I truly wanted Teddy and Jo to get together, this book made me think otherwise. Professor Bhaer, with Jo's help, makes a delightful father to the boys. He is the one you will get most of the life morals from.
3) The boys in Plumfield are definetly the key figures in the book. They create both the mischievious and melancholy stories. As I said, 'you'll laugh and cry'. Reading about these boys will make everyone reflect on their own lives.
4) Teddy grows up too. If you enjoyed the young scandulous Teddy, you'll enjoy the new one even more. In little men, Teddy (like Jo) has grown into a real mature father.
There are plenty more exciting things in the book. It is truly a classic masterpiece recommended to anyone who needs a lift in their spirit.

Avoid the IndiePublish Hardback edition
By Athelas
Please note, this is and has always been, one of my favorite stories. I am not reviewing the story Little Men, but the way it was published by IndiePublish. I would give the story 5 stars, but this presentation only two.

On the bright side, the cloth binding appears very well done and should last quite a while.

Unfortunately, the publisher chose to reformat all the paragraphs in the text so that like this review all margins are left justified and a blank line separates the paragraphs. If it were done well, it might have worked ok, but it was done very clumsily with the completion of a sentence often being separated from the rest of the paragraph. (I have a suspicion that the reformatting of an original text was done by using a Find-Replace function of a word processor and not checked by an editor.) This makes for some awkward readings, and probably not something I would want to put into the hands of a child.

Also the text was not proofed for typos or other simple errors in punctuation, and there are some places where I could not tell what the original sentence was intended to say. Again, I expect that the only proofing done on this version was by a spellchecker and a lot of simple mistakes entered into the publication.

I wish to repeat, that I love this story and have since I was a boy, and would recommend the story to any child, but would not recomment this particular volume.

The wild boys at Plumfield run amok! Jo rejoices!
By Joanna Daneman
While Little Men is not up to the literary achievement of Little Women, it is a wonderful tale for kids. It is JUST perfect for reading chapter by chapter to kids as part of an evening family night. It is as jolly as a house full of rambunctious boys could be.
Jo Bhaer, nee March, has boys of her own now and boys to spare. She and the Professor take in students based on charity and kindness. Some boys are neglected, some are badly brought up, all need love, laughter and a caring environment. Plumfield is all that and more.
The jolly goings-on make you wish you could have gone to school and lived at Plumfield. The book is prevented from being saccharine by the all-too-familiar themes of neglected kids, growing pains and the sad and much too early death of a favorite character from Little Women.
There is lots of fun, and lots to discuss in this sequel to Alcott's marvelous Little Women. Lest you think boys won't like Alcott, I know more than one man who loves Little Women even as an adult.

Young Josiah Paddock, on the run from his past in St. Louis, didn't have much hope of survival.  Winter was coming to the Rockies, and if the cold cutting through his city clothes didn't kill him, grizzlies or Indians would.  Then his luck tumed.  He stumbled across the trail of Ol' Scratch, a solitary mountain man eager enough for company to take the brash youngster under his wing.  Pure chance brought Paddock to the old trapper's camp, but it was skill with a gun and a knife that kept them both alive as they rode deep into the majestic land of Blackfeet and Crow, bible-spouting pioneers and sensual woman where only the best and braves survived . . . and only the luckiest rode back again. Carry The Wind is a gripping historical saga set in the Grand Tetons during a time when the horizon never ended and a nation was being born.

A big book
By Eddie Wannabee
As far as western books go, not at the top of the heap. Has its moments, and offers a glimpse of the elusive mountain man life, but could not enjoy thoroughly, too many pages for what it delivered. 3 Stars.
