Driven from their homeland, the Indians fought bitterly to keep a final stronghold east of the Mississippi.  Savage cunning, strength, skill, and knowledge of the wilderness were their weapons, and the Indians used them mercilessly.  But they couldn't foresee the white men who would come later, men who loved the land as much as they did, who wanted it for their own.  Men who learned the Indian tricks and matched brutality for brutality.

Great Tale of the Eastern Frontier
By Matthew S. Schweitzer
I love this book! Eckert's classic tale of Simon Kenton and settlement of the Ohio Valley is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the United States. This book was recommended to me after reading Eckert's "Dark and Bloody River". It is exciting, highly engaging, and historically detailed. The notes at the end of the book are a novel by themselves. The story of Kenton, Boone, and the Kentucky settlers is truly amazing. It has often been said that this should be required reading in high school and I can't help but agree. Eckert's books take place in a time and place nearly forgotten by modern Americans. Children raised on the old "Cowboys and Indians" westerns never learn that there was a whole other "West" on the Eastern frontier and the Northwest Territory. I grew up in Ohio, and I never learned about many of the events that happened in my own back yeard until I began reading Eckert! Many people are surprised to learn that there were a number of very bloody and significant battles during the Revolutionary War west of the Appalaichans, right here in Ohio in fact. A whole chapter of our history is being forgotten, but luckily, Eckert's books help to prevent that.

More Fictional Than I Expected - Still A Valuable Work On The Ohio/Kentucky Frontier
By R. J. Marsella
This is a difficult review to write because I have such mixed feelings about this book. It is a thrilling narrative of life on the early frontier along the Ohio River and incorporates some prodigious research into a slice of early American history that I was fascinated by. I recently spent some time in the Lexington and Cincinnati area and that visit drew me to this book even though it had been on my shelf for some time.
The author in his preface makes the claim that this is fact not fiction and that every conversation truthfully represented what passed between the respective parties even though he was taking some poetic license to aid the narrative flow. In my opinion he did much more than this attributing inner thoughts and feelings to characters including Native American characters that went beyond his own pre-established bounds. I admit that much of that embellishment makes the book highly readable. So much so that it reads more like a novel than an historical account.
In addition about halfway through the seemingly endless gruesome descriptions of the Indian's torture of their victims and captives became almost tedious for me. I am not contesting that these events happened , I'm just feeling that the author placed too much emphasis on driving home the ruthlessness and cruelty on both sides and the book for me started to take on the feel of whites vs Indians with less emphasis on the settlement of the region. The best example of what I felt were odd choices was an episode where he goes into detail about the Shawnee's capture and revenge on a couple by gutting them while tied to a tree and forcing them to circle the tree while their entrails emptied on to the ground. He immediately followed this with a short segue into a description of the birth of Simon Kenton's son John. You can argue that the juxtaposition demonstrates the full cycle of life on the frontier but for me it was over the top.
All of that said I respect the research that went into this work and the writing at times is gripping but there is at least as much fiction as fact in here and for that reason I can only give it 3 stars.

History for the young
By Quietman
This is just wonderful history told in a manner that captures the reader. I read the book when it first came out years ago.and loved it I wrote a review then. I had occasion recently to recommend a hood history book and I picked this one. In doing so I decided to re read it and just finished. It was even better the second time. The real Simon Kenton was a real larger than life person including Tecumseh, William Henry Harrison and George Rogers Clark. I only wish this book, and the others, Wilderness War, wilderness Empire, Dark and Bloody Ground, and Tecumseh would be made into a feature film. Eckert has done the country an invaluable service by recording our early history from the French and Indian War to end of the Shawnee country . Since the film seems unlikely everyone should read each Eckert book.
We both laugh and cry at tv reporters that ask our young college students basic history questions they are unable to answer. To those teachers that have the privilege of teaching young people please assign Eckert's books for them to read among other things.
The research cited in the Frontiersman is so extensive. I reading it I learned Andrew Jackson, great hero and President might have been ineligible to serve as President. Reliable witnesses of his family said that his mother and father immigrated from Ireland and Andrew was born on the ship enroute to America.

About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and began to write stories while he was a student. Over his life he produced more than thirty books, 150 short stories, poems, plays and essays across a wide range of genres. His most famous creation is the detective Sherlock Holmes, who he introduced in his first novel A Study in Scarlet (1887). This was followed in 1889 by an historical novel, Micah Clarke. In 1893 Conan Doyle published 'The Final Problem' in which he killed off his famous detective so that he could turn his attention more towards historical fiction. However Holmes was so popular that Conan Doyle eventually relented and published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901. The events of the The Hound of the Baskervilles are set before those of 'The Final Problem' but in 1903 new Sherlock Holmes stories began to appear that revealed that the detective had not died after all. He was finally retired in 1927. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died on July 7, 1930.

His first novel, "The New Centurions" (1971), was a quick success, drawing praise for its realistic action and intelligent characterization, and was adapted into a feature film starring George C. Scott. He followed it up with "The Blue Knight" (1972), which was adapted into a mini-series starring William Holden and Lee Remick.Since then Wambaugh has continued writing about the LAPD. He has been credited with a realistic portrayal of police officers, showing them not as superheroes but as men struggling with a difficult job, a depiction taken mainstream by television s "Police Story", which Wambaugh helped create in the mid-1970s. In addition to novels, Wambaugh has written nonfiction, winning a special Edgar Award for 1974 s "The Onion Field", an account of the longest criminal trial in California history. His most recent work is the novel "Hollywood Moon" (2010).

One Of Waumbaugh's Best
By Joseph J. Hall
I first read this about this book in a feature article in Los Angles Magazine in 1984. I later read this book while spending the weekend at the Marriott Rancho Las Plamas Resort in Rancho, Mirage, Ca. near where this book takes place.
The book focuses on a San Diego Police Officer who looses his son in the PSA jet crash in San Diego and escapes to a desrt town to escape San Diego and to still be near his ex wife who lives in Rancho Mirage in an exclusive Country Club.
The Main Character of this novel "Black Sid" gets an all expense paid vaction to Palm Springs to investigate a murder of a Millionares son. Black Sid like Harry Bright and the millionare all have lost their son.
The plot is very captivating and well worth the reading. Just be careful, it may inspire you enough to go to the Coachella Valley area and fall in love with the desert and buy a home in Rancho Mirage like I did!

The Usual
By James Hercules Sutton
Wambaugh formula--middle-aged cops who eat & drink too much, who've seen too much & lost too much, and are so burned out that they're looking for another life, if they're lucky enough to reach retirement. And a mystery to be solved, from the thinnest of clues, with a bent ending & no resolution. And all wrapped in stories cops tell each other--with great dialogue, well developed male characters, and one-dimensional females. Ah, the job, the job! Starting each of the early chapters off with point-of-view that shifts with each character was irksome to me, but, otherwise, a good read, overlong for its novella content. Here's its irony: Wambaugh is trapped in the world that his characters are trying to escape, even as he writes about it. Experience makes cynics of us all, and cops get cynical fast, including those who write about what they learned.

Almost a 4 star rating
By Michael S. Armstrong
This book is a strong 3 star book. I am not giving it a 4 star rating because of the fact that de Camp and Carter swiped a key ingredient from Robert E. Howard's Queen of the Black Coast (as found in Conan of Cimmeria) and placed it at the end of this story. Readers that are unfamiliar with that work will enjoy this book more than I did.
It is not a bad book mind you. It traces Conan's life as a youth in Cimmeria, through his years of bondage, until the point that he gains his freedom and embarks on the book's adventures. The reader will appreciate a fairly authentic Conan. He broods, he berserks, he is reflective, he has wit and sensibility. He is not overly polite. He is not so indomitable that he is inhuman. An intriguing bit of his religious side is revealed as well.
He befriends a thief, Subotai, who provides a hint of comic relief throughout the book without becoming a buffoon. Conan also links up with another thief named Valeria. (A character named Valeria appears in Howard's Red Nails, but they are not the same individual.) She is a very alluring character that infuses the book with an appealing feminine presence. Overall, the characterization of this book is strong. Two of the best characters are Conan's parents, but their presence is brief.
Conan's inevitable clash with the forces of evil is somewhat satisfactory, but the first half of this book is more intriguing than the last half. De Camp and Carter create some moody settings along the way that absorb the reader to some degree. Conan fans who enjoy monstrous creatures will probably not be very satisfied as they are kept to a minimum. The presence of sorcery and sexuality is not overdone. This is actually a well-balanced blend of all of the elements that make Conan stories appealing to his fans.
My main gripe is with the inclusion of elements from other Conan stories that make this book seem like a rerun at times, but I never felt like pitching the book against a wall. This book is based on the screenplay that was used in the Schwarzenegger movie, but I have never seen the movie to know how close it was to this book. If you like other work by de Camp and Carter, you will probably like this.

A hip pocket version of the movie
By JWR
So, your enjoyment will depend on if you're a Howard fan or not...the book bears no more semblance to Howard's original short stories (other than the occasional scene taken from Hoawrd's works) than does the movie, but that's the point.

The book is actually very, very close to the movie...a few little differences thrown in here and there that literally could have been in the movie, for that matter. The plot, theme, characters, locations are the same.

Overall, an enjoyable book if you like the barbarian hack-n-slash. If you're looking for in-depth character and plot development, you'll be disappointed.

Review

“A poetic novel unique in its fascination.” ―Thomas Mann

“Hesse was a great writer in precisely the modern sense: complex, subtle, allusive; alive to the importance of play, to the desperate yet frolicsome game of writing....Narcissus and Goldmund is his very best....What makes this short book so limitlessly vast is the body-and-soul-shaking debate that runs through it, which it has the honesty and courage not to resolve: between the flesh and spirit, art and scientific or religious speculation, action and contemplation, between the wayfaring and the sedentary in us.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“One of the most profound and magical novels published in our age.” ―Kirkus Reviews

An unjustly neglected masterpiece
By D. C. Cannon
Like most people, I read Hesse's better known novels like Damien and Steppenwolf first. I found a copy of this at a used book store, bought it, and let it sit on the bookself for a while before actually reading it. Was I surprised - this is one of Hesse's greatest novels.
Hesse takes two young men - one devoted to the hermetic religious life and another more into the decadent artistic life - and follows them through adulthood. There are some amazing scenes here - scenes of great artistic creation, a journey through a plague ravaged world, the reunion of the two friends - that rank among the best things Hesse ever wrote.
True the characters are more "types" than real three dimensional characters. It is obvious that Hesse wants to examine the spiritual/cerebral approach to existence versus the more artistic/physical approach to life, and to find them both wanting. This is less a slice of life novel than a modern parable. Taken on those terms, this novel is Hesse at the height of his powers and deserves to be better known and read than it currently is.

The Beauty that Aches
By A Customer
_Narcissus and Goldmund_ by Hermann Hesse is the story of two men: one an ascetic scholar, the other a passionate student of life. The book chronicles their fateful meeting, Goldmund's pursuit of truth and beauty, and a final reunion of the two friends late in life. It is quite simply the best book I've read thus far. In it, I find artfully and poignantly demonstrated the central conflict of my life, perhaps of all life: the struggle between the intellect and the emotions. The book is best read as a juxtaposition of both of these motivators in our lives. Narcissus represents pure intellect and reason, while Goldmund represents pure emotion and passion. Neither one could truly exist in the world, but Hesse creates them as archetypes of these two motivators in all humans. The struggles they encounter in understanding each other, and the struggles Goldmund encounters in making sense of the world, help us to better understand these two sides of our own character. The struggle teaches us of the beauty that aches, and friendship that knows no bounds. In this conflict one can ultimately find the beauty of truth, and the truth of beauty.

Hesse's finest novel
By Mark in Maquoketa
Having read all of Hesse works, I find them all fascinating and profound, but none more so than Narcissus and Goldmund. This masterpiece explores the balance between living for yourself and living for others. These two characters and how they relate and understand the other is just beyond words. I first read this book in High School and over the next 20 years have re-read it many times. It never grows old as it invokes our innermost desires and failures. Do miss out on this great read.

About the Author
ARISTOPHANES, the most famous comic dramatist of ancient Greece, was born an Athenian citizen in about 445 B.C. Forty-four plays have been attributed to Aristophanes; eleven of these have survived. His plays are the only extant representatives of Greek Old Comedy, a dramatic form whose conventions made it inevitable that the author would comment on the political and social issues of fifth-century Athens. This Aristophanes did so well that Plato, asked by the tyrant of Syracuse for an analysis of Athenians, sent a copy of Aristophanes' plays in reply.

His earliest play, the Banqueters, won the second prize in 427 B.C. when the dramatist must have been less than eighteen years old, since, as he notes in the Clouds (423), he was too young to produce it in his own name. Another early play, the Babylonians, criticized the demagogue Cleon, who responded by subjecting Aristophanes to legal persecution, and as the author charges in the Acharnians, Cleon had "slanged, and lied, and slandered and betongued me . . . till I well nigh was done to death." Nevertheless, in the Knights (424), he renewed his attack on the popular Athenian leader and won first prize in that year's contest. Plutus (388) was the last of the author's plays to be produced in his lifetime.

Bowdlerized Aristophanes!
By Charles Seife
I can accept some stilted language; after all, some of these translations are about a century old. I can accept the lack of notes. But I can not accept translations of Aristophanes that cut some of his funniest scenes!
For instance, in the translation of Thesmophoriazusae, the unmasking of Mnesilochus (line 600 and after) is gutted. Lines 610-617 are gone (Mnesilochus' urination excuse), but more importantly, the whole climax of the scene -- the hilarious physical comedy where he tries to maintain his female disguise (lines 643-649) -- is nowhere to be seen.
It's hard to imagine that an editor would allow 19th century prudery to ruin a 20th century edition of Aristophanes, but there you are.
Despite the cheap price, this book is no bargain. Spring for the more expensive (if a bit less literal) Penguin versions.

Disappointed by a Bad Translation
By Amazon Customer
The plays of Aristophanes comic masterpieces, but not in these old-fashioned, stilted translations. I have read other translations of some of these plays. When properly translated, they are witty in much of their wordplay, frequently ribald and often funny. The language of the present translations, on the other hand, is stiff, obscure and scarcely readable. The publisher has done us a great service by compiling all of the Aristophanes plays into a single volume, but should reissue the collection in a better, more modern translation, one which does justice to the original.

a dreadful translation of classic work
By Stephen F Mulcahy
do NOT purchase this translation. it makes one of the funniest writers of all time boring. this translation is as bad as the previous reviewers have indicated. the best, and most hilarious, translation that i've seen is a 1938 version that , i think, eugene o'neill worked on as an editor or something. however, aristophanes should definitely be checked out by afficionados of ancient greek literature as well as anyone interested in comic writing that'll make you laugh out loud. he's one of the titans of world literature.

The Iron Marshal: A Novel, by Louis L'Amour

He was a tough enforcer for a New York gang. But when young Tom Shanaghy made one too many enemies, he skipped town on a fast-moving freight. He landed in a small Kansas town that had big dreams, no name, and the need for an honest lawman. Tom figured that a knuckle-and-skull man from Five Points would be perfect for the job. He didn’t know that a high-stakes cattle drive was headed his way and that leading it was a vindictive rancher bent on settling an old score, even if he had to destroy the town to do it. Tom had himself stuck in the middle of the feud before sunset on his first day in town. All he could do was hope that his years on the Bowery had left him with the smarts he needed to keep himself alive.

Tom Shanaghy was iron-tough, but he was no lawman. Back in New York, he'd been the strong-arm for an infamous Irish gang. But when he jumped a westbound train to escape a deadly street war, fate sent him to a small Kansas town on the brink of its own violent battle. The townspeople were sorely in need of a marshal, and they convinced Shanaghy to pin on the badge. Now he must wade into the fight of his life, one that will show him just how tough this new land really is.

A Good Afternoon Read
By Mary Ellison
This story by Louis L'Amour was the very first of his novels that I ever read. Novels with a western theme were not my thing when I was growning up, so imagine my surprise when I just sort of drifted into this book one rainy afternoon. I guess I was attracted to it by the fact that it opens in New York City, not the deserts of New Mexico.

Anyway, I soon found that L'Amour has a writing style just as smooth as silk, and I found myself sliding into this book as easily as if he took me by the hand and led me to an alter. Since then I have read several more of L'Amour's books and have enjoyed all of them. I will review them here over the next few weeks, time permitting.

This book tells the story of how a young man from New York City ends up in a small Kansas town and picks up the job of being the Sheriff one day before all hell is scheduled to break loose. Others have outlined the text already, so I won't bore you with yet another outline. I'll just say that if you have not read any of Louis L'Amour in the past, this would be a really great place to start, or even to get reacquainted. While you do that, I'm gonna find another L'Amour book to read.:)

I confess! I'm a big fan of L'Amour work. I've never had the opportunity to read this one but now that I've done it I think it's as good as his most known ones.

Louis L'Amour is One of The Best Writers
By D. Harrington
Although most of his stories take place in the Old West, they could take place anywhere, as they are primarily about people and how they relate (or don't) to each other. The settings are authentic, though, and L'Amour is one of the very best storytellers we have had.
In the Westerns genre, he is the best, in my opinion, even better than Zane Grey and Max Brand.

The Haj - A Must Read to further understand the Middle East today!
By Amazon Customer
I visited Israel in 2009, and was greatly moved. I read Exodus and enjoyed it. I read Angry Hills, also by Leon Uris, and was reminded of one of my favorite authors, Alistair McLean - Guns of Navarone, etc.

The Haj - A very good presentation of the problems in the Middle East from the Palestinian point of view. You will find some of the characters quite sympathetic. You will almost hope for a positive outcome to the story, but hey - look at the Middle East today, and you will see that that was not to be. Historical fiction at its best!! I have since acquired several more of the Uris books - Looking forward to reading them, also.

Amazing and Profetic based on current Radical Islamic Terrorism
By JP
This well researched work of fiction brings life to growing up Palestinan in the 1930s-1950s. It is very well written and is a facinating look into the world of Islam in the Arab area. This story shows why we have Islamic Terrorism today. I was have given it five stars but it is slightly Jewish biased. Great read!

"It is always a treat to [hear] a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." -- The New York Times Book Review

"Los Angeles actor Michael Prichard provides a lively rendition of a Nero Wolfe mystery revolving around an eccentric genius who searches for the killer of his best friend. International espionage and high drama set in post-World War II mark an audio which proves suspenseful to the end." -- The Bookwatch, December 1997

About the Author
Rex Stout (1886-1975) was the creator of Nero Wolfe, one of the most popular detectives of all time.

Michael Prichard is a Los Angeles-based actor who has recorded over 400 audiobooks. Smart Money named him one of their “Top Ten Golden Voices.”

From AudioFile
Nero Wolfe fans may be surprised when the detective who never leaves home embarks on an international adventure. He sneaks into Yugoslavia, manipulates communist officials and anti-communist guerillas, climbs craggy hills, and hunts down his adopted daughter's killer. His sidekick, Archie Goodwin, is right beside him, pulling knives and guns on cue and narrating the adventure with his trademark dry wit. Michael Prichard's narration is strong and fluid, his voice resonant. His pacing is as perfect as his portrayal of Wolfe. Readers accustomed to Timothy Hutton's Archie Goodwin on A&E might be jarred initially but are likely to be drawn in by Pritchard's powerful performance. The peek inside Tito's Yugoslavia in the mid-twentieth century is a fascinating plus. E.S. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

The House of Mirth (Bantam Classics), by Edith Wharton

An immensely popular bestseller upon its publication in 1905, The House of Mirth was Edith Wharton’s first great novel. Set among the elegant brownstones of New York City and opulent country houses like gracious Bellomont on the Hudson, the novel creates a satiric portrayal of what Wharton herself called “a society of irresponsible pleasure-seekers” with a precision comparable to that of Proust. And her brilliant and complex characterization of the doomed Lily Bart, whose stunning beauty and dependence on marriage for economic survival reduce her to a decorative object, becomes an incisive commentary on the nature and status of women in that society. From her tragic attraction to bachelor lawyer Lawrence Selden to her desperate relationship with social-climbing Rosedale, Lily is all too much a product of the world indicated by the title, a phrase taken from Ecclesiastes: “The heart of fools is in the house of mirth.” For it is Lily’s very specialness that threatens the elegance and fulfillment she seeks in life. Along with the author’s other masterpiece, The Age of Innocence, this novel claims a place among the finest American novels of manners.

Amazon.com Review
"The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth," warns Ecclesiastes 7:4, and so does the novel by Edith Wharton that takes its title from this call to heed. New York at the turn of the century was a time of opulence and frivolity for those who could afford it. But for those who couldn't and yet wanted desperately to keep up with the whirlwind, like Wharton's charming Lily Bart, it was something else altogether: a gilded cage rather than the Gilded Age.

One of Wharton's earliest descriptions of her heroine, in the library of her bachelor friend and sometime suitor Lawrence Selden, indicates that she appears "as though she were a captured dryad subdued to the conventions of the drawing room." Indeed, herein lies Lily's problem. She has, we're told, "been brought up to be ornamental," and yet her spirit is larger than what this ancillary role requires. By today's standards she would be nothing more than a mild rebel, but in the era into which Wharton drops her unmercifully, this tiny spark of character, combined with numerous assaults by vicious society women and bad luck, ultimately renders Lily persona non grata. Her own ambivalence about her position serves to open the door to disaster: several times she is on the verge of "good" marriage and squanders it at the last moment, unwilling to play by the rules of a society that produces, as she calls them, "poor, miserable, marriageable girls.

Lily's rather violent tumble down the social ladder provides a thumbnail sketch of the general injustices of the upper classes (which, incidentally, Wharton never quite manages to condemn entirely, clearly believing that such life is cruel but without alternative). From her start as a beautiful woman at the height of her powers to her sad finale as a recently fired milliner's assistant addicted to sleeping drugs, Lily Bart is heroic, not least for her final admission of her own role in her downfall. "Once--twice--you gave me the chance to escape from my life and I refused it: refused it because I was a coward," she tells Selden as the book draws to a close. All manner of hideous socialite beasts--some of whose treatment by Wharton, such as the token social-climbing Jew, Simon Rosedale, date the book unfortunately--wander through the novel while Lily plummets. As her tale winds down to nothing more than the remnants of social grace and cold hard cash, it's hard not to agree with Lily's own assessment of herself: "I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else." Nevertheless, it's even harder not to believe that she deserved better, which is why The House of Mirth remains so timely and so vital in spite of its crushing end and its unflattering portrait of what life offers up. --Melanie Rehak

From Library Journal
Wharton's account of the ill-fated life of Lily Bart receives a perfunctory treatment in this audio program. It is New York in the early 20th century; Lily loves Lawrence Selden, but he sees her as a fortune hunter, with tragic consequences. The author excels at delineating the ways money, romance, and social standing intertwine in the society of the time. Included is a lengthy introduction by Wharton biographer R.W.B. Lewis that sets the work in the context of the writer's life and career. Casual listeners may consider the preface too long and scholarly, and those coming to the novel for the first time may be put off by learning the outcome and by hearing Lewis's uncertainty about whether it is a masterpiece. Anna Fields handles the narration adequately but strains to create masculine voices and makes most of the women too flighty. As a result, the characters seem more trivial than Wharton intended. Not recommended. Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr.

"A tragedy of our modern life, in which the relentlessness of what men used to call Fate and esteem, in their ignorance, a power beyond their control, is as vividly set forth as ever it was by Aeschylus or Shakespeare."—The New York Times

Edith Wharton was brilliant
By Marla Johnson
House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton, was a fantastic read. From the moment I read the first sentence to the very last page, I was captivated by Lily Bart' s life. At first, Wharton' s writing style reminded me of one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen. I have been a long time fan of Austen' s, so to equate another author to her is a great praise in my eyes. N ow that I've finished the novel, I believe Wharton is in a category all her own. She is refreshing to read and has a great balance between dialogue and text. Although I liked Lily from the very beginning, I absolutely loved her by the end. There were times when her story was endearing, and other times when it was completely heartbreaking. In both instances, Wharton draws the reader into Lily' s life.
While this is not my usual cup of tea, I greatly enjoyed reading it, and suggest it to anyone who loves a thought-provoking story.

... read this for my book club and I did enjoy the story but I don't care for Edith Wharton's ...
By DeCeLaw
I read this for my book club and I did enjoy the story but I don't care for Edith Wharton's style of writing as she is too detailed and describes the flowers and gardens and what someone is wearing in detail and it is just my taste. The book I got from the library was old and the print was very small and the contractions such as "couldn't" had a space and would appear as could n 't and it made it even more difficult to read. Once I got my Kindle version I actually was able to read the book faster and did finish it which I doubt that I would have done if I had stuck to the library book. he other thing I didn't like about the book was that it was difficult to keep characters straight because sometimes they were referred to by their first names, sometimes by their first and last names, sometimes by Miss, Mrs., or Mr. and last name and then sometimes the women who were married were referred to as Mrs., their husband's first and last name such as Mrs. John Doe.

Old New York's pomp viewed with a sharp discerning eye
By Linda Linguvic
Written in 1905, this novel brought me into the world of New York society at that time. Edith Wharton lived in this world and her writing dissected its pomp with a sharp discerning eye. The people she writes about own country houses where the party never stops. They travel abroad for months at a time. Their clothes are of the finest quality. And the only possible career for a woman is to marry a rich man.

We first meet Lily Bart at the age of 29. She has been trained from childhood in all the social graces. Unfortunately for her though, her father lost all his money when she was 12 years old and both her parents died soon after that. As she was beautiful, she assumed that her looks, quick wit and personality would attract a wealthy husband, and, indeed she did attract them. But in her youth she turned down several suitors and was now aware that time was no longer on her side; she needed to marry before she lost her looks.

She has her eyes set on Percy Gryce, a dull man who will be at a party in a country home and she flirts in such a way that he is soon smitten. He is desirable for his money but he bores her to death. But this romance never works out.

There is another man of course. His name is Lawrence Selden. He is a lawyer and lives a nice life but doesn't have the wealth she thinks she requires. They become friends and it is clear to the reader that they are in love. She still keeps looking for a wealthy man though and makes one mistake after another. Even though she remains chaste, she gets into some compromising situations. There is a lot of gossip and her rich women friends either turn on her or drop her.

Her prospects get dimmer and dimmer and she even considers marrying a rich Jewish man who she had once turned down, but even he rejects her. At one point Lawrence Selden tries to help her but she rejects him too. She's penniless and has no prospects. She is living in a boarding house and trying to work in a milliner's shop but even the spangles she sews on the hats are crooked and she soon loses that job. This novel ends in tragedy.

Lily Bart is a great character. She symbolizes the reality of New York society. She also is very human and deeply flawed and even though there were times she annoyed me tremendously, I could also sympathize with her. As a New Yorker myself, I enjoyed the setting as I am very familiar with the streets and the history. This is a really fine book.
