This dictionary has unique features generally unavailable elsewhere. For instance, the author narrows down alternative choices to the one you may want. The gender of Spanish nouns is set forth on the English side. Spanish American words are designated
by their regional usage. i.e. SA, MEX
Definitions are set forth completely. For instance, perforar
is defined as follows:
- to perforate, to drill, to bore to puncture (una tarjeta )
The presentation is based upon reliable sources . Over 70,000
words are defined for education, business, travel, history,
literature, art, social sciences, medicine, diplomacy,
international affairs, matters of everyday life and American/
British usage with hundreds of neologisms. The book is a solid value if you can acquire it. I have one.

An extremely good Spanish dictionary! The best I've seen!

As a Spanish student of 5 years, the Bantam New College Dictionary is the best dictionary I have seen yet. It never fails to have the word or phrases that I am looking for. It is necessary for truly understanding the Spanish language.

Unreliable and Sp. gender given only in Spanish half.

This dictionary could serve as a companion to leisure reading, but professional translators, academics, or businesspeople must not risk their livelyhood on its often erroneous and incomplete translations. I know of one university Spanish department that officially does not recognize the dictionary for this reason.
ANNOYING TIME WASTER---> This book only tells you the gender of the Spanish words in the Spanish-to-English half. When you need to know how to say a word in Spanish, you look it up in the English-to-Spanish side, and then, to be sure the word does not have an irregular gender, you have to look up the Spanish word on the Spanish-to-English side because that's the only side that lists the gender. This means you spend twice the time looking up the word in this dictionary than you would in another.
It is kind of nice because it is compact and because it does contain some hard-to-find uncommon words, but I wish I would not have bought it.
